STCATHEDRAL-INSPIRED PLANBecause many of Hirst’s works evoke themes of life, death, spirituality, and theatricality, I decided that it would be appropriate to look to Baroque cathedrals-- famous for their grand, theatrical spaces and holy function. The basic elements of a cathedral are translated into the museum’s plan: nave, aisles, transept, crossing tower, and apse. The nave is the grand, double-height atrium; the aisles are the main vertical and horizontal circulation; the apse hosts the centerpiece: a theatrical downpour of black curtains, displaying the most expensive of Hirst’s work, For the Love of God. The archive is located in the basement, and is arranged like the crypt of a church. Finally, a tripartite facade is used to articulate the entrance.

CONTEXTUAL SIGNAGE + ADVERTISEMENTSSoho is a bustling shopping district within New York City, and so the museum has to compete with a myriad of advertisements and large signage, subjects ranging from clothing to food to movies. In order to be a major element in a forest of advertisements, the Hirst Museum’s signage is on-axis with east-bound Houston Street traffic, and visually splits in half as one passes the building. This splitting is a reference to Hirst’s own work, where he often splits corpses of animals in half and suspends them in a tank of formaldehyde.

CURTAINS AS ARCHITECTURECurtains are a theme in the Hirst Museum, and it is appropriate for numerous reasons. First, it evokes the theatrical motif of the Baroque. Second, curtains allow galleries to be flooded with natural light, while protecting the sculptures from UV damage. Third, the curtains block the noisy views outside that are filled with advertisements. And finally, the curtains are able to be moved for an infinite number of arrangements, dictated by the unique curtain track configurations embedded in the waffle-slab structure of each gallery. Diagrams of these ideas are shown below:

FORM FROM CIRCULATIONBeing a conduit for different modes of transportation, the form of the Williamsburg Ferry Terminal was derived from the idea of circulation eroding the building away, leaving subtractive spaces within curved forms.
ANGLES OF ORIENTATIONA focus of the layout of the ferry terminal was to frame panoramic views of Manhattan Island’s skyline. Two of the most prominent buildings are axes of orientation. The first building is the newly completed Freedom Tower, at 30 degrees south of west. This new structure is juxtaposed to the other focused building: the much older Empire StateBuilding, at 70 degrees north of west.

BASIN VERSATILITYTo extend the park’s space and available activities, a terraced basin was added. In the summer, this basin can be used as a pool-- cleaner than the East River. In the spring and fall, this basin can be an outdoor amphitheater. And in case of emergency, this basin can be a floodwater collector, an asset when New York is hit by hurricanes.

THE WORKYARDThe workyard of the KC Fab Lab is located at the prominent location of the street corner. This was done to create maximum interest from pedestrians, to allow each main space of the Fab Lab to have a portion of the workyard available to them, and finally in order to provide a large semi-public space. Since the Fab Lab is located in the Crossroads of Kansas City, the workyard can be opened up and used for First Friday galleries and vendors. It can be opened up to serve as a farmers market. But its main purpose is to provide a large outdoor work area for the fabrication of projects. In order to provide these many functions, a gate system is implemented at the streetfront. These gates can be fabricated by an artist at the Fab Lab, and installed on-site. The gates are decorative and perforated so they are not oppressive to the public, but still provide a barrier between public and private if needed. Further, the workyard is covered by sawtooth roof PV panels to power the Fab Lab as well as maximize the workyard’s usability throughout the year.

CONSTRUCTIONThe emphasis for this project was creating construction documents. The entire building’s anatomy had to be considered, sized, and documented. The Kansas City Fab Lab is a basic brick cavity wall system, with steel structural framing. The entire construction document set is availible upon request, with a wall section and detail sections shown at the far left.

CONCEPTTallgrass Prairie Retreat is to be a place of relaxation and rejuvenation within the setting of the Kansas prairie. The prairie easily offers a quiet, peaceful location in which one can meditate and enjoy nature. To facilitate this, each major space has the opportunity to fully engage the prairie’s grace. A western orientation focuses guests on a beautiful scene of prairie grass, tall trees, wind and sky. Each space is to have light, flowing curtains that offer a physical representation of the wind. The building’s overall massing is long, low, and subtle - not on the hill, but of the hill.

NEUE NATIONALGALERIE BENCH
Located at the Neue Nationalgalerie, a small bench was designed to honor the design legacy of Mies van der Rohe. The bench itself is simple: a collision of planes made of his iconic marble and onyx. The bench was simply a focus for learning digital rendering.
I aim to not merely make a photorealistic rendering, but to tell a story through the rendering to evoke realism and emotion.
