Invitation

It is my great pleasure to invite you to the FALK workshop ‘TranslationalResearch in Chronic Liver Diseases’, which will take place in Heidelberg fromJanuary 29th – 30th 2009. The scientific board has selected this topic in orderto emphasize the urgent need to make better use of the rapid progress inbasic biomedical research in addressing liver function and disease in termsof diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic applicability. Since the translationalresearch today develops the innovative therapy for tomorrow we areconvinced that the workshop will meet broad interest in the community ofliver researchers, clinical scientists, and innovatively thinking hepatologistsand oncologists.

Chronic viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease and their consequences are theclinically relevant liver diseases. Despite the significant progress in basic bio-medical research we are still struggling with a lack of specific predictive testsand efficient therapies. With the advent of e.g. large scale profiling analyses,high-output functional tests, and tailored in vitro and in vivo model systemswe are now witnessing exponentially growing numbers of potential thera-peutic target structures and diagnostic markers. As a consequence, many novel and more specific therapeutic substancesare in the process of being developed and will dramatically change ourdiagnostic and clinical approach to chronic liver disease in the future.

The aim of translational research is to motivate basic biomedical researchersto reflect upon clinical questions and to integrate these questions into theirresearch topics and to support clinicians in understanding and utilizing thepotential of basic biomedical research. The FALK workshop on ‘TranslationalResearch in Chronic Liver Diseases’ intends to make its contributions andbring together internationally leading experts, who will present recentprogress in preclinical liver research. I am sure that Heidelberg and itsResearch Campus will provide the ideal framework for interesting presenta-tions, stimulating discussions, and some new ideas and I hope to see you allin Heidelberg in January

Sincerely,

Peter Schirmacher
