SUMMER 2014 THE WINEPRESS MAG
First o all I would like to thank our
readers or sharing with businesses
that you heard about them rom Te
Winepress. We appreciate those who
share us with their riends and amily. Please dont stop!
Your support is what helps us grow and continue to
provide you with great stories and ideas or your next
visit to the Central Coasts wine region.
As the editor o a magazine about one o the hottest
wine regions in Caliornia, it isnt surprising when people
ask my opinion about where to go or what to do on
their next visit. With each request I am happy to help my
riends and amily plan their next visit to Paso Robles.
In honor o Paso Robles
125th Anniversary and the
explosion o growth seen
in the downtown area, this
seemed a natural place to
start. One o my avorite
things about downtown
Paso Robles is that you canwalk rom place to place. With
restaurants, shopping, art
exhibits and o course tasting rooms, your options are
limitless and all without having to use a car.

With a bronze statue o a cowgirl greeting
you at the door and horseshoes, handsaws
and horns hanging on every square oot
o wall space, the Cowgirl Ca fits right in with the country-
western spirit o Paso Robles.
But i you come in on a Saturday morning, you soon
see a better reason why this downtown diner is a perect
match or this town. A husband and wie in their 70s walk
in the door, skip past the line o
guests waiting to be seated and
plop down at the bar as they
might do in their own livingroom. Te pair enjoys a happy
banter with the staff as they
wait: Yes, someone appears
to be sitting at their table. No,
theyll wait or it to open up.
On the other side o the room, a
patron inquires about her waitresss
amily. Behind, another server can be overheard saying,
Te usual? beore nodding with a smile and buzzing off to
the kitchen.
Te climate at Cowgirl Ca is bustling, and though
there are surely many new visitors streaming in, you get
the sense that everyone knows one another. Te service is
riendly, down-to-earth.
Were a lot like Cheers, says Manager Beverly Bev
Henshaw with a warm smile. She has been working with
some o her staff or 26 years, 15 o them at Cowgirl Ca.
And many o their guests are just as amiliar. We have so
many returning customers, its like a amily. Some people
come every day.
She sets down a plate filled to the brim with ried eggs,
crispy hash browns, thick bacon, and biscuits with gravy, and
its clear: whether its your first time oryour hundredth time, one bite o
Cowgirl Cas country cooking
will take you home.

The ultra-modern rows

Bodegas Winery tasting room window
have become iconic in downtown Paso

apart is its winemakers love affair
with Spanish and Portuguese varietals.
Bodegas owner and winemaker Dorothy
Schuler takes pride in giving these

When I first started, everyone was
doing French varietals, said Schuler. I

Arroyo Robles asting Room Manager Brianna Shore said
l about offering something or everyone. With wines

bringing home a souvenir, she added.
Our price point combined with the act that we make
any different varietals sets us apart, said Shore. We
ently offer a list o 17 varietals we work with in-house, and
lso offer Ros, ports and sparkling wines. We really run the
bit and provide a one-stop shop.
Te winery produces about 3,200 to 4,200 bottles per

Arroyo Robles Wine University classes are held at the

Shore said shes liable to give out more inormation than
need about the wines, but she said thats what makes her

Our winery philosophy is, Know what you like, said

I I you ask Burbank Ranch Winery & Bistro owners Frank and

but its also true o their tasting room and eatery, located at
1240 Park St. in downtown Paso Robles.

Aunny thing happens when strangers belly up to the bar at Grizzly
Republic Wines, located at 840 13th Street in downtown Paso

Were amazed at how many people come in and end up striking up

In Paso Robles Wine Country, Grizzly

atmosphere: Te boutique brand is synonymous
with award-winning empranillo as well as its vast
single varietal lineup.
Aside rom two blends Gypsy Noir and Gypsy
Ros the winery specializes in mostly single
varietal wines. Barbera, Chardonnay, Grenache,Petit Sirah, Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz represent a
ew current offerings.
Tis difference sets us apart rom a lot o Paso Robles wineries who are

Te winery began in 2004 with a ew barrels o Zinandel and has evolved
a 1,500 case-per-year operation, also encompassing a secondary label
d Barbeque Cellars. Winemaker Brian Cheeseborough is a bear-like, yet

Like his grandather, Parrish went

However, Parrish took the dream one

Every local winery bringssomething unique to the winecommunity. For AsuncionRidge (pronounced AH-SUN-SHON) its pinot noir. ypically, the Paso
Robles region is too warm or this ruit but
the Asuncion vineyard is located in the
perect microclimate; just to the south in
Atascadero, nestled back along the Santa
Lucia Mountains, six crow-flown miles rom
the mighty Pacific. Producing only 1000
cases a year, Asuncions pinot is revered and
worth a trip into the tasting room alone.Tis room graces the park walk and
is ornamented with beautiul, rich, 1890s
woodwork that originates rom the local
pharmacy. Te space itsel is very large;
there is a ull bar with seating not a

as arm tables and lounge chairs that are
perect or gatherings with riends but also
provides enough room or a little privacy,
i that is what you preer. Open late on
weekend evenings, Asuncion plays host to
local musicians on Saturdays. With no cover
charge, theres no excuse not to stop in
and have a glass while you listen to some
great music.
Proprietor and winemaker Philip
Krumal built his winery out o passion.
His proessional career spanned across
music, auto sales, and real estate; all while
maintaining a hearty love o ood and
wine. Krumal decided to dive into the
world o ood and wine proessionally,
and embarked on a tour o Caliornia.
From north to south he searched, looking

project. Finally, he settled on the Asuncion
Rancho; chosen or its now-proven
promise to support vines. Te property is
approximately 320 acres, seven o which
are vineyard, and is also the site o the
Asuncion Ridge Inn; a three-room bed and
breakast available or rent. Should you
stay youll be treated to lavish meals cooked by
Krumal himsel, enjoyed while taking in sweeping
views o rolling hills and the shimmering ocean.

Amtrak station just a ew

having to get into a car. Also,
she says people really seem to like the ocus on

retail shops or blocks. As ar as why you should visit
Asuncion in particular, Burke boasts their seven-

Warm and charming with its yellow paintand white and pink trim, the historic trainstation building at the corner o 8th andPine streets in Paso Robles appears almostmodern at first glance. But, as you step in, the original, 1887
floorboards creak just enough to tell you that the view rom those
original, 1887 windows is one authentic Paso Robles view.
About as authentic as it gets, according to Steffanie Anglim,
who lets out a big, warm, Midwesterners laugh when asked about
her and her husbands unique choice o tasting room venues or
their award-winning Anglim wines.
Its such a great space, Steffanie says, admiring the buildings
character and ample natural light. Its, as I understand it, one
o the oldest reurbished buildings in Paso Robles. I think thats
a nice connection or us to have, especially as
people who have recently just moved here.
Steffanie and her winemaker
husband Steve, both originally rom

been making wine rom their garage

Rhne-riendly wine country and the
