GREETINGS SILHOUETTES: All roads lead to the gathering of Silhouettes at the 46th National Silhouettes Conference held during the 82nd Grand Chapter Conclave of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. As we convene in the fabulous city of New Orleans, August 11-16, 2015 to conduct the business of the National Silhouettes, the New Orleans Silhouettes are putting out the red carpet in the style of gracious southwestern hospitality. Silhouettes, join us for the opportunity to network, and enjoy together, the beautiful sights and sounds of New Orleans, a city on the move, continuing to re-build and shape its future. Congratulations New Orleans Sister Silhouettes for shaping plans into reality with your steadfast “yes we can” motto, stellar efforts of support, sharing of your expertise, time and talents, and many hours of working tirelessly to ensure the success of meetings and planned activities; for the enjoyment of conference attendees. I am extremely pleased,

and excited that over 200 Silhouettes have registered for the conference. Silhouettes, our call to action is to have chapter representation from among all 12 provincial areas. Join us for a memorable NOLA Experience. The mission of the Silhouettes is to raise the bar on service and support to the men of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. As we work toward fulfilling our mission, the business sessions will cover revision of the National Silhouettes Bylaws, new ideas, and key strategies to shape our work. Many social and cultural activities will be available including a variety of exciting cultural tours of the city. Please note Registration for tours is separate from the general registration. As I travel around the Provinces, I continue to be amazed and overjoyed by the implementation of many substantive community service projects in the 12 Provincial areas featured in this issue of the National Silhouettes Newsletter. It is indeed, strategic movement towards our mission as the Auxiliary to Kappa Alpha Psi. In moving forward, let us continue to focus on ♦ expansion and use of technology; ♦ support of widows; ♦ chartering and re-activating chapters for membership growth; and ♦commitment to increase the National Silhouettes financial support to the Kappa Foundation. Together we can achieve these benchmarks as we connect, engage, and raise the bar on service and support to the men of Kappa Alpha Psi. In this special summer issue of the National Silhouettes Newsletter, our Online Editor Andria Daniels continues our collaborative efforts to highlight a featured article with members of the fraternity’s administration. I am very pleased to share in this issue an interview with Thomas L. Battles Jr. - Senior Vice Grand Polemarch of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Please allow me to also congratulate the New Orleans (LA) Silhouettes on hosting this meeting. I know that as we take care of Kappa’s business in New Orleans, our wives will be as diligent about the work of the National Silhouettes with meetings, workshops, and of course the fun activities that are planned. Silhouettes have always been an integral part of every Kappa man and our business long before the formal National Silhouettes were founded and have continued in that vein by working side-by-side with the Fraternity in community service projects, Kappa Foundation support both nationally and on the local level, and lending your husbands to our National Guide Right Program as youth mentors. I’m also excited about your reconnecting with the former First Lady of Kappa Alpha Psi, Murial Gumbs as you begin preparing for your anniversary celebration. As you know Past Grand Polemarch Dr. Oliver Gumbs was very instrumental in reorganizing our Silhouettes nationally. Going forward, we appreciate the support already given and ask for continued collaboration not only with our Guide Right and Kappa League Programs but new initiatives like Healthy Kappas-Healthy Communities, Political Action and Civic Engagement, Social Action, and Senior Kappas and Widows of Kappas initiatives. Nothing is more important to Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity than the work that our Silhouettes do in support of our fraternity, as well as what they do in their own right to make a difference in the communities we serve. The Brothers are looking forward to a great turnout at our 82nd Grand Chapter Meeting in New Orleans as our beautiful Silhouettes join us as we continue our journey into our next hundred years and continue to make you proud to be Silhouettes. 1) If you are elected as the 33rd Grand Polemarch of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. how will you

partner with the Silhouettes to increase Silhouette awareness in the fraternity that can in turn assist

with increasing our membership?

TLB: First I would like to thank you for this opportunity to share this time to talk about the Silhouettes.

Silhouettes are very important to Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. as you are our support as well as wives

and widows of this great organization. I would like to encourage brothers to involve the Silhouettes more in

our International marquee programs. This will assist the fraternity in more exposure and involvement in our

communities. Secondly, I would encourage brothers to expand where possible and appropriate the creation

of more Silhouette chapters. I will do my best to increase marketing of the Silhouettes and promote the value

of what Silhouettes bring to the fraternity.

2) As a National Organization that was established as the official auxiliary of Kappa Alpha Psi

Fraternity, Inc., what is your vision on how the Silhouettes can continue to be a support and an asset to

the fraternity?

TLB: I believe as a national organization Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. should be doing more in our

communities in areas like Social Action and Guide Right. I believe we have a talented organization among

our Silhouettes, Senior Kappas and brothers who have additional time to participate in such programs. We

should honor and garner more participation from our Silhouette widows. I am completely supportive of

ensuring that Silhouette widows continue to participate in Sihouette activities and that Kappa Alpha Psi

Fraternity, Inc. welcomes them to all National and Regional confernces and family activities. I will ensure

the programs that Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. will promote will include Silhouettes as an intricate part

in the implementation in our communities.

3) Do you foresee any partnerships on the national level that Silhouettes and Kappa Alpha Psi

Fraternity, Inc. can capitalize?

TLB: I truly see many partnerships with Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and the Silhouettes through our

Kappa Foundation and International Programs that will be implemented. Initiatives involving our Senior

Kappas, Guide Right, Kappa League, Social and Political Action will need Silhouettes to help in training and

mentorship sessions. We have many Silhouettes that are trainers, educators, mentors and professionals that

would greatly add value to our programs and we want to capitalize on their skills. We have 2016 and the

Presidential election coming up. Implementing voter registration drives and education especially in

communities of color will be an asset. We want to be relevant in America in both organizations. I am

encourage, delighted and I feel the energy among both organizations. Lastly, I want to say I look forward to

working with the Silhouettes as you prepare and plan your 70th

Anniversary in 2017.

Serving as National First Vice President it has been my goal to be readily available to the outstanding Silhouettes in the Provinces I serve. I feel truly honored to be able to work with such dynamic women! That which follows are some of the things I have been engaged in as National First Vice President.

Conducted Chartering Ceremonies for (2) chapters in the Northern Province.

Traveled to pre-planning meeting for Chapter hosting upcoming Province Meeting held in Saginaw, Michigan.

On behalf of our National President Massey, I gave greetings at the 67th

Province Meeting in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I will also provide greetings at the Public

Meeting at the 68th Province Meeting being held in Saginaw, Michigan.

I was invited by South Central Province Coordinator Silhouette Chantay Dillard to be part of their business meeting at the South Central Province. There were Skype difficul-ties, however audio was available. I shared with Silhouettes all of President Massey’s updates. This included the upcoming Inaugural Newsletter and sharing the log in procedure for the website.

At the Ann Arbor Province Meeting during the business session I shared the importance of setting up a username and password to access the Members Only Page on the Website. I explained the login procedures and encouraged Silhouettes to send articles to the Newsletter.

In reference to our online Newsletter I sent two articles to the Newsletter. The first being an over-view of Ann Arbor’s outstanding Province Meeting. The second article pertained to the Saginaw Chapter retaining the Traveling Plaque. I sent pictures for both articles as well.

Re-sent President Massey’s request that Silhouettes join one of the National Committees. A request was also made to designate a Silhouette from their respective Province to serve as the Liaison for Widows. Our Province Coordinators did a good job in getting a representative for their Province.

Attention also given to the review of Bylaws. Chapters in the various Provinces sent their

recommendations to President Massey and Silhouette By-Laws Chair Brenda Beale.

My recommendation for the newly appointed National Historian was accepted by President Massey. Elaine Kinloch is a resident of Canton, Michigan and is in the Financial Aid Department at the

University of Michigan. She has excellent leadership abilities. I will assist her with taking any photos she might want.

In addition, I have volunteered to take pictures at the upcoming Conclave. The photos will be placed on our online Photo Gallery.

Southwestern Coordinators Staci Robbins has requested I send greetings for their Province Meeting to be held in Little Rock, Arkansas. I have complied!

The South Central Province supports a school in Ghana. A marvelous service project. I did a monetary donation to this worthy project.

Greetings Silhouettes,

The Coordinators of the Middle Eastern, Northeastern, Middle Western, Southeastern, East

Central and Eastern Provinces have been extremely busy preparing for Provincial meetings.

I’m tremendously proud of what these Silhouettes do, and want to provide you with the

inside scoop on what these hard working ladies have been up to!

Our Northeastern Province Coordinator, Silhouette Sandi Sharp is completing her very first

year as a Province Coordinator! Kudos to Sandi as she oversees 5 financial chapters with

approximately 109 financial members and just recently chartered the Hartford Connecticut

chapter! Province Coordinator Shirley Pinckney and the Eastern Province have elected a new

Province Coordinator, Silhouette Joan Crutchfield who will take office in September.

Welcome aboard Joan!! Silhouette Katina Gamble, Coordinator for the Middle Eastern Province has made health and

fitness a large part of her mantra over the past 2 years. Members of that Province participated in movement sessions

designed to burn calories, loosen joints and have fun! Province Coordinator, Silhouette Janice Dean and the

Silhouettes of the Southeastern Province discussed initiatives for chapter growth and Silhouette participation during

their “Red Dress Luncheon”. Silhouettes were encouraged to share challenges in retaining membership and

collaborated to develop strategies to be implemented in their local chapters.

Silhouette Zaviera Johnson, Coordinator of the East Central Province, and Silhouette Lynnette Heard in their efforts to

support Silhouette Angela Gordon are initiating a “Love Basket” throughout their province. They are also planning a

luncheon for Angela and her girls this summer. Silhouette Gordon recently lost her husband, Kappa Daryl Gordon.

This is truly what the Silhouette sisterhood is about, beautiful job ladies!!

Lastly, Middle Western Province Coordinator, Silhouette Anita Shelton planned a Trolley Tour of downtown St. Louis

hitting all the historical landmarks, shopping, spa treatments, and who could make a trip to St. Louis and not stop by

world famous “Sweetie Pies”, these ladies were in for treat!

So the next time you see your Province Coordinator, give her a hug, let her know how much she’s appreciated.

These ladies put in long hours to ensure that your Provinces are running smoothly. They are fabulous!!

Her spirit empowers her beauty,

Her demeanor defines a Christian image to uphold

For she wears it with pride and with a big, big smile

And no, she just can’t hide

Being the heart of a Kappa man’s pride

Greetings Silhouettes,

Your Silhouette sisters of the Baltimore Chapter join you in applauding the Southwestern Province and the New Orleans Chapter of Silhouettes! We appreciate you for graciously accepting the role of hosting us at the 82nd Grand Chapter Meeting of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and our 46th National Silhouettes Meeting that will be held in the great city of New Orleans. We can already feel your warmth and welcoming vision to help us “… know what it is like to experience New Orleans”! So with each idea, next step, conference packet stuffed, milestone or deliverable achieved, remember to enjoy the fellowship and time spent with your Sister Silhouettes creating great memories along the journey to August 2015. Committed for the success of this Chapter, The Bowie/Mitchellville Silhouettes continue to make their presence known throughout Prince George’s County Maryland. The Silhouettes have added two new and very important projects to our Community Service Program. We adopted a Title II Elementary school and provide 100 students with healthy snacks during long weekends and school holidays. The majority of the elementary school students depend on the meals served at the school. When school is closed, a lot of the students do not have an ample food supply until school is opened. The Bowie/Mitchellville Silhouettes partnered with The Priceless Prom Project in Prince George County Maryland to assist with collection and distribution of attire for high school female students so that they can attend the high school proms. The project is not limited to priceless- dress- give- a-way; it provides various forms of etiquette training to the students; including but not limited to how to walk, sit, dance, and enter a car in formal attire. The project also includes discussions on what appropriate behavior is expected from the escort as well as appropriate behavior for the young lady. Washington DC Silhouettes kick-off year with flurry of activity Desireé C. Boykin, Reporter, DC Silhouettes DC Silhouettes kicked-off our year with a planning meeting lead by President Cheryl Teare on September 13, 2014. At this dynamic session, the Silhouettes Executive Board laid the groundwork for the coming year. Polemarch Robert Cooper was also in attendance to lend his support and answer questions about the coming year. The DC Silhouettes were quick to action and supported the Washington (DC) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. as it celebrated its 90th anniversary in October. The Silhouettes purchased an ad in the Kappa’s souvenir journal. The DC Silhouettes also continued our annual support of the Kappa Scholarship Endowed Fund (“KSEF”). This year, the Silhouettes contributed an LG 32’ television as an auction item for their annual Celebrity Auction and Soul Food Feast in November on Howard University’s campus. The Silhouettes also made a cash contribution of $1,250.00 which was presented by President Teare at the event.

In keeping with tradition, the DC Silhouettes decorated the historic Kappa House for the holiday season. Silhouettes also supported the Kappa Klaus Family Holiday Luncheon and Toy Drive, a popular part of the Kappa Guide Right program. An annual highlight, the Silhouettes Holiday Party was held at the VIP Room in Northwest Washington, DC. A resounding success, the party also featured a gift basket auction to raise funds for the Historic Kappa House restoration fund. DC Silhouettes closed out the year with a bang with a New Year’s Eve Pot Luck party at the Historic Kappa House. Looking forward, the DC Silhouettes are planning a Mother/Daughter Tea in March and a May fundraising event. Silhouettes also look forward to sharing in the fun at the annual Kappa Father’s Day picnic (June 21).

Introducing current ESL President: Silhouette Harriet M. Lewis

Silhouette Harriet M. Lewis is married to Joe W. Lewis, Jr. (over twenty-years). Joe was born into Kappa

Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. in 1980 and has been a dedicated and active member since. He has held many

offices on the local as well as the National levels. Harriet and Joe are the proud

parents of Christina A. Lewis-Trotter (Katrell) and Joe W. Lewis, III, and the proud grandparents of

Courielle M. Hoffman and Kaiden A. Trotter.

Silhouette Harriet is a faithful and dedicated member of the St. John Missionary Baptist Church located in

Centreville, Illinois where she has been a proud member over thirty-nine years. Harriet currently serves as

the Chairman of the Trustee Ministry and has held the position of Treasurer over seven-years. She currently

serves as the President of the Silhouettes, East St. Louis Chapter; Financial Secretary for the East Saint Louis

Chapter of Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc. (TLOD); and is a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.

She also serves as a Director on the Board of Directors for the St. Louis Chapter of Certified Fraud

Examiners.

Silhouette Harriet has a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology from Southern

Illinois University at Edwardsville and a Masters in Business Administration. Harriet is a Certified Fraud

Examiner (since 2002), an Accredited Healthcare Fraud Investigator (since 2008), a Certified Professional

Coder (since 2006), and a Health Care Anti-Fraud Associate (since 2006). Harriet is currently employed as a

Senior Staff Investigator with Express Scripts, Inc. (ESI). She is part of the Special Investigations Unit

Program Integrity team where she has served over five-years. She currently investigates fraud, waste, and

abuse cases for the Department of Defense under the requirements of the TRICARE Pharmacy contract.

The Middle Western Province Council meeting include the following planned events on Friday: Trolley Tour of

Downtown and Historical places in St. Louis, A visit to the Lumiere Casino, Shopping (and spa treatments own your

own)at the Plaza Frontenac Mall and dinner at Sweetie Pies. Province Coordinator Anita Shelton gave greetings on

behalf of National President Jackie Massey and all Silhouettes nationally at the Public meeting which honored Captain

Ron Johnson who was appointed by Missouri Governor Jay Nixon to lead protest security in Ferguson Missouri

following the unrest as a result of the fatal police shooting of Mike Brown. The National Presidents Annual update

was distributed and discussed including the invitation to “Experience New Orleans” August 11-16, 2015 Pat Lewis is

our newly elected MW Province Recording Secretary. Memorial Services were conducted for 4 Silhouettes. We joined

our husbands for the Awards Luncheon and enjoyed activities at the Silhouette Hospitality Suite. We enjoyed a

wonderful meal at our closed formal banquet. The Silhouettes and the Kappas partnered with the St. Louis Urban

League and participated in the Save Our Sons (SOS) service project and donated suits, shirts and ties to young men to

help prepare them for job training and job interviews.


The Wichita Alumnae Chapter held its annual Fred D. Middleton Golf Tournament, at the Rolling Hills Golf Course in

Derby, KS. named in honor of one of the legendary members of their chapter. Funds raised in the excess of $5,000,

will be distributed as scholarships to graduating high school seniors who have an interest in the STEM fields. At the

conclusion of the tournament there is a steak meal prepared by several of the brothers and the Silhouettes assist

with serving the meal while the brothers listen to a speaker and awards are presented to the participants.

St. Louis Alumnae chapter Silhouettes hosts their annual Fashion Show Luncheon featuring members of the St. Louis

Kappas, Silhouettes and family members. A very successful event raises funds that are donated to the Kappa

Foundation. The annual Champagne Sip is held during the Christmas Holidays where the annual donation to the

foundation and other community organizations is made. The Silhouettes also support the monthly Jazz Jams that

feature local jazz groups in the St. Louis area.

Denver Chapter Silhouettes donated Thanksgiving Baskets and participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure

and the African American Health Awareness Project Cure where medical supplies are donated to third world

countries. The annual Fashion Show and reception allowed them to give over $5,000.00 in scholarships as well as

laptops to 24 students including two students with a 4.8 and 4.5 GPA respectively.

Fayetteville Silhouettes supported the Annual Golf Tournament where they served as caddies and prepared SWAG

bags for the participants. The funds raised from the golf tournament and the very successful Kappa Casino night was

used to give out scholarships at the Annual Scholarship Ball where the Silhouettes hosted a formal reception.

Tulsa Silhouettes sponsored the Ebony Bowl where local area middle schools compete on their knowledge of Black

History. They also participated in the annual Valentine’s Day party, annual picnic and the All White Party.


Our 2014 Holiday Party “Cocktails With Our Kappas” was a huge success! Great food, live music, adult beverages, &

presents for everyone!

We are not a “National Meeting Only” group that disbands after the big show! We have been together over 30

years and continue to attract new members by keeping the fun going!

Shred receipts, credit offers, credit applications, insurance forms, physician statements, checks, bank statements, expired charge cards, and similar documents when you don’t need them any longer. Destroy the labels on prescription bottles before you throw them out. Take outgoing mail to post office collection boxes or the post office. Promptly remove mail that arrives in your mailbox. If a company that claims to have an account with you sends email asking for personal information, don’t click on links in the email. Instead, type the company name into your web browser, go to their site, and contact them through customer service. Or, call the customer service number listed on your account statement.

Before you dispose of a computer, get rid of all the personal information it stores. Use a wipe utility program to overwrite the entire hard drive. Keeping Your Devices Secure Install anti-virus software, anti-spyware software, and a firewall. Set your preference to update these protections often. Protect against intrusions and infections that can compromise your computer files or passwords by installing security patches for your operating system and other software programs. Don’t open files, click on links, or download programs sent by strangers. Opening a file from someone you don’t know could expose your system to a computer virus or spyware that captures your passwords or other information you type. Before you send personal information over your laptop or smartphone on a public wireless network in a coffee shop, library, airport, hotel, or other public place, see if your information will be protected. Keep financial information on your laptop only when necessary. Don’t use an automatic login feature that saves your user name and password, and always log off when you’re finished. That way, if your laptop is stolen, it will be harder for a thief to get at your personal information.

PHILADELPHIA KAPPA SILHOUETTES: OVER 90 YEARS OF SERVICE

There is always an exciting, sisterly, productive spirit in the air when the Philadelphia Silhouettes come together. Since we last posted in this Newsletter, the Silhouettes, Kappas and their friends enjoyed a cruise on the Royal Caribbean ship Allure of the Seas for seven nights in the Caribbean region. The proceeds of this endeavor were donated to one of the Silhouettes’ worthy charities. On December 14, 2014 a wonderful Holiday Brunch for our Kappa husbands, family, and friends was held at McCalls Golf and Country Club, right outside Philadelphia. There was upbeat dancing and holiday music provided by Kappaman James Gleaton, Jr. Exciting door prizes were given out to the lucky winners and everyone enjoyed the rich, festive flavors of the special plates prepared by some of Philadelphia’s finest chefs. Widowed Silhouettes were treated and honored to a delightful afternoon at this year’s Philadelphia Alumni Kappa’s Annual Sweetheart Affair. As winter blew its last breath, the Silhouettes drew hundreds of women to their Annual Fashion Show and Luncheon held at the famous Whitemarsh Country Club in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. After enjoying a delicious lunch prepared especially for the Silhouettes and their guests, fashions from Just For You Boutique brightened the runway. The Commentator, Renaissance Man, Nathan Townsend kept our guests laughing and on the edge of their seats. Proceeds from this yearly event help support Autism

Speaks, Alzheimer’s Foundation, American Diabetes Association, G.E. Thorne Foundation for the Cure of Breast Cancer, The Sickle Cell Association, and the Philadelphia Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Achievement Academy for male students in junior and senior high school. This June, the Chapter will also provide educational stipends to six (6) graduating high school young ladies attending institutions of higher learning. Cooking Sequence - Prepare chicken and begin to grill - 5 minutes - Prepare potatoes and complete chicken; serve - 10 minutes

Cooking Instructions Buffalo Grilled Chicken

Ingredients 1 tablespoon cornstarch 1 teaspoon seasoned salt large zip-top bag 2 lb boneless, skinless chicken thighs 1/4 cup Buffalo wing sauce cooking spray

Steps 1. Preheat 2-sided tabletop grill. Place cornstarch and seasoned salt in zip-top bag; shake to mix. Add chicken (wash hands); seal tightly and shake to coat. Add wing sauce; seal tightly and knead bag to coat completely. 2. Coat both sides of grill with spray. Place chicken on grill; close lid and cook 8-10 minutes, pressing lid down occasionally to sear chicken. Cook until edges are crisp and internal temperature is 165°F. Serve.

Blue Cheese Spuds

Ingredients 1 tablespoon fresh chives, finely chopped 1 (24-oz) package refrigerated mashed potatoes 2 tablespoons crumbled blue cheese 2 teaspoons cooked bacon pieces Steps 1. Chop chives; combine with remaining ingredients in microwave-safe bowl. 2. Cover and microwave on HIGH 4-5 minutes, stirring once. Stir and serve.

Aprons Advice - Complete your meal with celery sticks, garlic toast, and Key lime pie for dessert. - Prepare a dipping sauce for chicken with equal parts melted butter and Buffalo wing sauce.

Undoubtedly, the highlight of 2014 was the

fabulous 67th Northern Provincial Council held at

the Sheraton Four Points in Romulus, MI. The

Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Inkster (AAYI) Silhouettes

Chapter worked tirelessly for a year to assure that

a good time was had by all. Red shoes and red

carpet treatment were running themes for the

weekend of fellowship with Silhouettes from the

Northern Province. Attendees are still talking

about the complimentary massages and the top

notch entertainment which included the talents of

The Mime Choir Ministry featuring our very own

AAYI Silhouette, Phyllis Lipkin, and the

hysterically funny comedienne, Crystal P., who

both performed for the Silhouettes’ magnificent

“Red Shoe” luncheon. And, if that wasn’t enough,

the keynote speaker for the Silhouettes Banquet,

Solomon W. Kinloch, Jr., Senior Pastor of

Triumph Church, provided inspiration abound and

the sophisticated jazz styling’s of guitar virtuoso,

John E. Lawrence, serenaded the ladies.

Workout!”

If you know Veronica Fox, you know that she is

socially engaging and loves to entertain. This is

why there was no surprise that a chance meeting at

a local outdoor jazz event last August with a

personal trainer and his wife, a Zumba instructor,

inspired her to host weekly workout sessions in

her home. For several months the ladies of the

AAYI Silhouettes Chapter and friends gathered at

the Fox’s home twice weekly on Tuesday and

Thursday to work out and to do Zumba. Under the

couple’s instruction, not only did the ladies

learned numerous workout techniques such as core

strengthening and stability exercises, and cardio

workouts using dance and exercise equipment, but

they also learned more about medical issues such

as high blood pressure and diabetes as well as the

importance to never skip breakfast and to increase

their daily water intake. After one month, the

group lost an average of 4 pounds and 4 inches!

COMMUNITY PROJECTS:

Twice a year we hold a Bingo Party for the senior residents of Brush Park Manor, where we

serve light refreshments, provide monetary prizes and gifts donated by the Silhouettes.

We continue to give financial support to the Ronald McDonald House in Detroit, Mich.;

which provides comfort and care to children and parents during their stay at Detroit

Children’s Hospital.

In October, we assisted the Detroit Kappa Leaguers in their collection of men and women’s

clothing for the Back-to-Work programs in the Detroit area and continue our financial

support.

Our Silhouette chapter purchased a congratulatory full-page ad in the 2014 Detroit, Ann-Arbor, Ypsilanti, Pontiac, Southfield Kappa Foundation Black and White Ball Souvenir Booklet, and the Detroit Alumni Women of distinction Luncheon in March.

NASHVILLE SILHOUETTES HOST A SOCK DRIVE Over 250 pairs of socks were delivered to the Hadley Park Towers (home for the elderly and disabled) on Saturday, February 28, 2015 as part of the Nashville Silhouettes service project. Deemed a SOCK DRIVE initiated by NAC Silhouettes and the Nashville Alumni Kappas, donations of clean and new socks to uplift and inspire a legacy of love for the local residents and the community-at-large were given. During this activity NAC Silhouettes feasted on a pot luck meal, decorated the Kappa House Christmas Tree, and genuinely blessed each other with awesome door prizes. Conyers-Covington (GA) Silhouettes Chapter Chartering

The Conyers-Covington (GA) Chapter became the newest Silhouette chapter in the Southeastern Province on October 25, 2014. With community and service as the leading charge, the induction ceremony was conducted by Silhouette Janice H. Dean, Southeastern Province Coordinator. The chapter began serving the community by

donating canned good items to the Rockdale Food Pantry. The chapter will also participate in the Rockdale County Relay For Life event. The 2014-2015 Chartering Officers: Andria S. Jacksonville (FL) Silhouettes The Jacksonville (FL) Silhouettes are active in the community and strong supporters of the Jacksonville Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. For the 2014-2015 Program Year, we hosted a beautiful Christmas Party for the Kappas and Silhouettes which included a gift

exchange as well as a blanket and toiletry collection for the needy. In January, the Silhouettes staffed the registration booth for the Kappa’s 3rd Annual “Healty Start 5K” – and some Silhouettes participated as runners in the race too. The Jacksonville Silhouettes served at the resgistration desk for the Kappa Klassic 27th Annual Charity Golf Tournament – where over 130 golfers enjoyed the event. In addition to registering the golfers, the Silhouettes prepared the “ditty bags” for each golfer. We also sold raffle tickets and mulligans to the golfers during registration, distributed raffle prizes, and assisted wherever we were needed. The Jacksonville Silhouettes host a community Easter Egg Hunt at the Kappa Fraternity House each year. This fun event includes the reading of the Easter Story, bag decoration, show & tell, lunch, an exciting Easter Egg Hunt, and lovely Easter baskets for each of the children.

Our Chapter has worked hard to ensure that community service is at the forefront of our focus. Our chapter works diligently to make sure that all projects are completed. Some of the projects are:

Perishable and non-perishable items, including meats; were distributed to four needy families during the Thanksgiving season.

Gift items of toiletries, hats, gloves, scarves, socks, gum, candy and jewelry were presented to the clients at the Sea Breeze Health Care Facility during the Christmas season.

A monetary contribution was given to help defray the cost of the Kappa’s “Breakfast with Santa” project at the Dearborn Street YMCA where many gifts were presented to needy children.

The Mobile County Public School System Homeless Education Department received twenty Wal-mart gift cards to assist homeless families during the Christmas holiday season to purchase food, gifts, and other needed items.

We presented our annual Book Scholarship to a high school female senior. We participated in the Annual Relay for Life walk and presented a donation. We decorated the Kappa House in preparation for the annual Mardi Gras Reception for the Queen and her Royal Court. We selected and presented the “2014 Silhouette of the Year” award to Silhouette Leola Hudnell at the Kappa’s

Founders Day Banquet. As a Father’s Day treat, we prepared and served dinner for the Kappa’s at the Kappa House.

Hattiesburg Silhouettes Celebrate Banner Year!

The Hattiesburg Silhouettes Chapter of the Hattiesburg Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. started the year with the selection of one of the members, Jessie A. Wilson (center in right hand picture with National President, Jaquelene Massey) as the winner of the Southwest Province 2014 Silhouettes Lena Lockhart Award. Jessie “Annette” Wilson is a charter member of the chapter and has served in many officer roles to include the chapter’s president. The chapter will celebrate a 45th anniversary in 2016. Annette has only missed one SWP meeting as a Silhouette and has served as the chapter delegate to province and national meetings numerous times. Since the last Province meeting the chapter has been involved in the following activities:

Article Submitted by Silhouette Barbara Gamble * Cancer Update from Johns Hopkins: 1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size. 2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person's lifetime. 3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors. 4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, but also to environmental, food and lifestyle factors.

5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet to eat more adequately and healthy, 4-5 times/day and by including supplements will strengthen the immune system. 6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastrointestinal tract etc., and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc. 7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs. 8. When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications. 10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause cancer cells to spread to other sites.

*CANCER CELLS FEED ON: a. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc. are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses, but only in very small amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in color better alternative is Bragg's amino or sea salt. b. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soy milk cancer cells are being starved.

c. Cancer cells thrive in an acidic environment. A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little other meat, like chicken. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer. d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C). e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine, green tea is a better alternative and has cancer fighting properties. Water-best to drink is purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it. 12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines becomes putrefied and leads to more toxic buildup. 13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells. 14. Some supplements that build up the immune system (IP6, Flor-ssence, Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc.) to enable the body’s own killer cells to destroy cancer cells. Other supplements like vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells. 15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, un-forgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life. 16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily and deep breathing helps to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.

We are all smiles because we concluded our 68th Province Council Meeting on March 28, 2015 and we are

ready to greet our Silhouette sisters from across the Nation in New Orleans this summer. Our theme for our

Council Meeting was “Women in Service, Doing Extraordinary Things. We concluded that our key focus for

the upcoming program year will be membership. We will concentrate on growing our membership,

supporting our members in keeping with our bylaws and mentoring our members towards excellence. Our

Province Council meeting was held in the Seattle, WA area. The reports from the chapters around the

Western Province highlighted the commitment and support the Western Province Silhouettes lends to the

community and our Kappa men.

The new LBISB Silhouette Chapter hit the ground running! The official chartering ceremony was held May 18, 2014. A very big thank you to Silhouettes Jacqueline Berryman and Patricia Bass for officiating such a wonderful event. It was well attended by President Myranda Golphin-Wilson, Financial Secretary Gina Ricks, Parliamentarian Brenda Simmons-Sears, and Secretary Ray Driver. Our club charter ceremony included Silhouettes Winifred Yancy, Belinda Jackson, Rose Kinley and Darlene.

As we go through some growing pains in less than year, we have had two well attended and interesting social events. In December Silhouette Myranda and her husband hosted a Christmas Party, and raised $900 towards the Kappa League Foundation, and served as volunteers for the annual LBISB Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Pancake Breakfast fundraiser which raised $2,000 for scholarships. It was also our pleasure to donate the Champagne Bath Hearts to include in this year’s Western Province gift bags. We look forward to a new year of exciting activities and events as a young chapter of the National Silhouettes Organization.

Silhouettes of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Los Angeles California Alumni Chapter L.A. Alumni Silhouettes 2014-2015 Year The amazing and energetic Silhouettes of the Los Angeles Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. completed a year embodying our Western Province theme “Women in Service Doing Extraordinary Things”. During the Kappa Black and White Ball, a signature event hosted by the members of the fraternity that introduces the Los Angeles community to the Holiday Season in ‘Kappa Style’, we presented a Silent Auction and fur raffle to financially assist the fraternity and to help fund our Silhouettes Kappa League Scholarship. We invited our community to an afternoon spotlighting Past, Present and Future Black Achievers; an event that was warmly received and now calendared as an annual presentation. Other service projects this year included providing gently used magazines to nursing homes in our community as well as continuing membership in the A.C. Bilbrew library (a local library that emphasizes the history and contributions of African Americans). Our attendance at the 68th Western Province Council meeting in Seattle, Washington was exceptional as we collectively discussed issues of importance to our chapter and to our community with other Silhouettes from the Western Province. The L.A. Alumni Silhouettes enthusiastically support one another and enjoy our informative and goal-oriented Silhouette meetings. Darby The 41st Annual Urban League Equal Opportunity Luncheon celebrated community stewardship, dedication and engagement as the historic institution burned the mortgage on their state of the art downtown headquarters and honored community trustees. National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial keynoted the address with his words of community motivation and dedication for the next generation with his “three Ds”. “The first D is to defend the idea of democracy… the second D is to demand jobs and the last D is develop – meaning we need to develop humanitarian efforts in our communities with after school programs and more jobs,” said Morial. The highlight of the luncheon was the presentation of awards and recognitions. The Clanzel T. Brown award was presented to Dr. Barbara A. Darby, President of Florida State College of Jacksonville- North Campus
