It appears the worst of winter is over and spring is in the air.

Along with the warmer weather comes the anticipation of the

seniors for graduation and the start of hopefully a long, prosper-

ous and fulfilling career in pharmacy. If I can give just one little

piece of advice that my dad told me, “Get a job that you like and

things will fall into place.” How true that is.

I would also like to ask that you, the graduating seniors, not forget

Kappa Psi when you get established in your jobs. Please send in

your Voluntary Graduate Dues of $50, or about one hour of your

salary. I hope Kappa Psi was that important and memorable to

you while you were in school to support it after graduation.

I enjoyed meeting a lot of you at the APhA Convention in Seattle,

and I hope you are making plans to come to San Francisco in

August for the 55th Grand Council Convention, the 2nd thru the

6th. Dr. Kali Weaver, the Grand Vice Regent, is doing a fantastic job planning for this event, and it

should be outstanding. Be sure to go to the Kappa Psi Web site for updates, important convention infor-

mation, and to register online.

For those of you who could not make it to Seattle, at the Kappa Psi Reception, we presented Dr. Robert

A. Magarian with the A. Richard Bliss Award for his outstanding contributions to the profession of phar-

macy. Dr. Magarian was Executive Director of the Fraternity from 1980 to 2000 and ran the office from

the University of Oklahoma’s College of Pharmacy. Bob also reactivated the Gamma Omicron chapter

in 1971 and served as their Grand Council Deputy.

Enjoy your summer and stay safe.

Spring FeverNow that spring has finally arrived, brothers across the country have been busy attending

Province assemblies, state association meetings, and various national pharmacy events. Alongwith all these events, the academic year is quickly winding down and finals and graduation arejust around the corner.

As this issue will show, the Brotherhood has been quite active in your local communities andcampuses making a difference in the lives of the people that we reach out to touch and influence. These connections that are made to assist others truly separate Kappa Psi from other organiza-tions. Over the last several months, Kappa Psi brothers have worked with the Ronald McDonaldHouse, raised countless dollars for cancer research, counseled patients on their medications, andalso found the time to recruit and instruct our new members into Kappa Psi. During my time serving asSatrap, I had an opportunity to use the experi-ences I learned in my chapter and focus them onimproving the Province.

In my post-collegiate era, I still find myselfhaving such a great passion for our belovedFraternity. The opportunity to provide mentor-ship is one like no other. I have the great honorto give back to my Fraternity by providing guid-ance to my collegiate brothers at Epsilon Mu(University of Florida at Orlando). “Snowpocalypse, thundersnow, snowmageddon”! With the city ofChicago buried under two feet ofsnow, our Chi brothers had an event-ful and fun snow day. Rather than sitby a fire and sip cocoa during thethird largest recorded snowstorm inChicago’s history, Chi brothers band-ed together to help out their strandedbrothers by digging out their cars andclearing up their sidewalks, while hav-ing fun at the same time.

Our social chair, Aalok Shah, orga-nized the largest snowball fight in Chichapter history. Many of our WestCoast neophytes got their first taste ofa true Chicago winter. Brothers metat Arrigo Park decked out in full snowgear just as the storm subsided.Everyone split up into teams andplanned their attack. Those whochose not to fight built snowmen inthe same spot where we grilled burg-ers for the annual Kappa Psi RushBarbecue a few months earlier.

Apart from all of the fun, severalbrothers were stranded as their carswere cloaked under a veil of snowand ice. We began the year by hold-ing a Valentine’s Day bake sale onboth the Oklahoma City and Tulsacampuses. This was a great success inpreceding years and this year was nodifferent. Brothers baked all of thegoods that were sold that day. To helpraise even more funds, we have a newshirt design in the works to be soldexclusively to pharmacy students onour campus in the upcoming weeks.Aside from fundraising, we have alsofocused our efforts on elections, andthe competition is heating up! The Gamma Pi chapter welcomed2011 excited for our two-week newmember orientation period to begin.Traditionally, our pledging hasoccurred through four weeks in the

fall semester. However, with increas-ing pressure for grades, we changedour schedule. After dropping theirbids in September, our potential newmembers had the opportunity to exe-cute service and fundraising projectsand plan social and rush events oftheir own while having ample timeand academic support from Gamma Pibrothers to focus on their grades. They even beat the actives for thebest GPA with a fall semester averageof 3.16! About a week before thespring semester began, we met our 25recruits at our chapter house for atwo-week crash course in all things

Kappa Psi. Potential new membershad several chances to bond withactives as well as meet numerousgraduates throughout the St. Louisarea. Without the stress of school, ourpotential new members were able toeat and sleep Kappa Psi. They grewcloser than any pledge class in thepast, and their dedication over thosetwo weeks instilled in them anunprecedented pride in the Fraternity. On January 15, we were delighted tohave 25 new brothers join our ranks.

In other news, Gamma Pi participat-ed in a Polar Plunge for the St. LouisSpecial Olympics in February. Theweek leading up to the plunge consist-ed of an ice-covered St. Louis, twosnow days, and frigid temperatures,so Lake St. Louis was extra cold. Ourchapter raised more than $1,000, andabout 10 brave brothers actuallyjumped into the water. We also partici-pated in a brown bag event at achurch in February. Parishionerswere able to have their blood pres-sures taken as well as ask medication-related questions of Gamma Pi broth-ers. More recently, 26 of us had awonderful time visiting with oldfriends and making new connectionsat the Province VII assembly inHouston. A big “thank-you” to DeltaDelta for planning a great Province!

We will kick off March with ourRed Cross Blood Drive that we spon-sor on campus twice a year. After that,we will work with the St. PatrickCenter to collect canned goods for theneedy, soak up some much neededsun during spring break, and beginmaking our final push toward the endof the semester.

Gamma Phi kicked off the semesterby hosting the Province IV conclave inAthens, Georgia, with more than 300collegiate and graduate brothers inattendance. It was a fun weekend andgreat opportunity for Gamma Phi toshow what Athens has to offer and forour first-year brothers to experienceKappa Psi on a Province level.Brothers Michael Brenner and ZachLapaquette were recognized for theirextensive planning to make sure con-clave went smoothly. However, it wassomewhat bittersweet for us atGamma Phi, as conclave marked the

end of Brother Abe Duncan’s term asProvince Satrap. Khalil Khlifi alsoturned over the reins as ProvinceWebmaster, but was elected to serveas the new Province Historian.Overall, the weekend was a great suc-cess that provided countless network-ing opportunities.

Following conclave, school got offto a rocky start with our entire firstweek of classes either being cancelledor delayed due to a record 9.5 inchesof snow. However, once it cleared, wehosted our annual Welcome BackParty. We had a great turnout and itprovided students from all over thepharmacy school a chance to relaxand catch up after winter break. Eachguest who attended brought a cannedfood item, which was later donated toa local food bank.

Recently, the brothers of GammaPhi selected six first-year ladies tobecome our Little Sisters. We are veryexcited for our new additions to be apart of the chapter. To celebrate, wetreated them to dinner and a night outon the town.

We will be holding our secondblood drive for the 2010–2011 schoolyear. As with every blood drive, theRed Cross has set an extremely highgoal, so the brothers will have to workhard in order to meet and hopefullyexceed expectations. We will also bebringing back our hit “Boxers andBlazers” party this semester, wherethe first-year brothers put on a showin order to raise proceeds to benefitRelay for Life. This party is always amassive success and a huge turnout isexpected. The brothers of Gamma Phiwill be traveling to Myrtle Beach inApril for our annual spring formal. Just a few of the things we havebeen focused on in recent weeks are:starting up a Web site (complete witha PayPal button to make it easier forour brothers to pay dues), organizingfundraising events, fine tuning ourconstitution as problems arise, andreaching out to graduate brothers inthe Orlando area.

While there is much to do, ourmain focus the last few months hasbeen on pledging. We have spentmany meetings since our charteringdiscussing and organizing our rush-ing and pledging process. We recentlygave bids for our first pledge class.Transitioning from FoundingBrothers to pledging others has notbeen without difficulty, but as with allthings Kappa Psi, we have had manyhelping hands. Brothers from chap-ters across the Province have dedicat-ed time and effort to make sure ourpledge program is as strong as it canbe. Special thanks go out to theregents of Gamma Psi and DeltaUpsilon for their continued advice.

The chapter had a fantastic time atthe Province IV winter conclave inAthens, Georgia. It was a great oppor-tunity for us to meet our new brothersand begin our involvement inProvince duties. We also had our firstannual EM Fantasy FootballTournament, with the trophy going toJoel Peterson. It was neck and neckbetween Joel and Jeremy Lund untilthe very end when Joel came out ontop thanks to Pittsburgh’s defense onweek 16. Many of our brothers andour GCD, Dr. Renee Rose, got togeth-er for more football fun when gradu-ate Brother Dr. Robert Vandervoortinvited the chapter to his house forthe Super Bowl.

The Mu Omicron Pi chapterhasbeen busy putting the last touches onthe upcoming spring assembly meet-ing. Here’s a recap of our recent activ-ities. Despite our small numbers, wehave been busy taking active roles inour community. We were involved ina diabetes clinic where trained volun-teers have been serving the commu-nity by providing free diabetes andcholesterol screenings.

Other volunteer activities includeorganizing exercise and nutrition regi-mens/presentations to the residentsof COTS (Coalition of TemporaryShelter). COTS is a homeless shelterfor transient people who are down ontheir luck and have lost everythingand need some relief. COTS providethem an area to live in while trying toget back on their feet. Upon theirrequest, they have asked pharmacystudents to organize daily nutritionand exercise regimens and advice toimprove their daily living. This is acollaborative effort with students andfaculty from the Physical Therapy andNutritionist program. The event willkick off in April.

Mu Omicron Pi brothers have alsobeen taking an active role in organiz-ing undergrad students to participatein Wayne State University’s annualFAWN program. This program pro-vides nutritional meal replacementssuch as Ensure to people in Africa inorder for their medication therapy tobe more effective.

Last but not least, our chapter hasbeen actively involved in an organiza-tion called “World Medical Relief.”This amazing organization collectsmedications and distributes them to

underdeveloped countries whereaccess to drugs is very limited. Theyalso provide services and health reliefto those in the local community whocannot afford health care to manageconditions. And no surprise at all, thepharmacist in charge of WMR is, ofcourse, a KAPPA PSI BROTHER!

The Final Word

This is an exciting time in Kappa Psi. Our55th Grand Council Convention is quicklyapproaching and we will be convergingon San Francisco in a matter of months. For those of you who have not been toGCC, it is an amazing time that willchange your life. It is the meeting of allKappa Psi meetings where theConstitution and Bylaws can be changedand policy can be written. GCC is also

where the Executive Committee dissolves and every chapter hasan equal voice.

Your first GCC can seem overwhelming at times. There arepeople there whom you have only read about like Brother DeweyGarner or Brother Norm Campbell. You’ll see chapters that bringevery brother with them to GCC while you may be the only per-son from your chapter. Some brothers seem to know everyoneand have no problem standing in front of the entire assembly andspeaking their mind. We have all been there. We have all been thebrother in the room who didn’t really know anyone. We have allsecond-guessed ourselves before approaching the microphonebecause we didn’t want to sound like a fool in front of everyone.

My advice to you is to meet as many brothers as possible. Asyou talk to your brothers, you will learn that while we may all bedifferent on the surface, we are all Kappa Psi at the core. I alsoencourage you to speak up during the convention. Let your opin-ions be known! You will never be thought a fool as long as you’respeaking from the heart and with the Fraternity’s best interest inmind.

The theme of this year’s Grand Council Convention is “This ismy Kappa Psi.” This theme was chosen as a reminder to all broth-ers that this Fraternity does not belong to a few but rather to all ofus. We are all responsible for the future of our Fraternity. Cometo GCC, make your voice heard, and remember this is YOURKappa Psi.

This is my Kappa PsiDr. Kali Weaver, Grand Vice Regent

Brother Allison Lau presenting a gifton behalf of the Delta Delta chapter totheir GCD, Dr. Louis Williams, toshow their appreciation for his dedica-tion to the Fraternity and the chapter.

Conclave was not all about business.Brothers were treated to a few roundsof laser tag and an air hockey tourna-ment at the local Laser Quest. We alsospent some time forging new bonds ondance floors of Spokane’s best-knownnight life spots. We wrapped up theweekend with an awards banquet atLuigi’s restaurant in downtownSpokane. Gamma Eta was also pre-sented with the Travelers’ Award forhaving the most brothers travel thelongest distance to attend conclave.

We strengthened our bonds at theProvince level with Beta Omicron andBeta Pi joining the brothers of Delta

Mu to help initiate new brothers inVancouver, British Columbia. Thebrothers of Beta Omicron and SatrapChad Seely also showed support to ourProvince’s newest chapter, Epsilon Xi,during its chartering at PacificUniversity in February. We hope tostrengthen bonds between all thechapters of Province X with morecross-chapter activities outside of con-clave.

We would like to thank SatrapJanice Louie and the brothers of BetaPi for coordinating this year’s conclaveand social activities.
