But do you know what famous people, animals or buildings are on all of your country’s banknotes? Can you remember the 2: _____ for each banknote? Did you also know that each year there is a competition held to decide the most impressive new banknote designs of the last 12 months?

Yes, that is right. Each year the International Banknote Society’s (IBNS) hosts a prestigious international competition that votes on the best new banknote 3: _____ of the year. Currencies from all over the world are judges before the grand prize is awarded to the Central Bank that has released the most 4: _____ design. This year the clear 5: ______ was the New Zealand $5 banknote which beat off competition from Sweden’s 20 Kronor note, Kazakhstan’s 20,000 Tenge note, Russia’s 100 Rouble note and Scotland’s 5 Pound note.

3 The New Zealand $5 banknote 6: ______ perhaps the country’s most famous 20th Century icon – the climber Sir Edmund Hillary. Sir Edmund was the first man, with Sherpa Tenzing, to successfully climb Mount Everest. The note depicts Sir Edmund looking towards the country’s highest mountain – Mount Cook / Aoraki. On the reverse side of the note is the 7: _____-Eyed Penguin – which is native to New Zealand and is sadly also on the endangered list.

4 Reserve Bank of New Zealand Deputy Governor Geoff Bascand was thrilled that the $5 note had been chosen by the IBNS as the best. Mr Bascand said, “To have our $5 note recognised internationally is very 8: _____. As it beautifully showcases New Zealand’s history, culture and heritage.” The $5 banknote first came into circulation in October 2015 and like many new banknotes around the world is made of 9: _____. Surprisingly the banknotes will not be printed in New Zealand, but instead by the Canadian Banknote Company in Ottawa, Ontario.

Yes, that is right. Each year the International Bank Note Society’s (IBNS) hosts a prestigious international competition that votes on the best new banknote design of the year. Currencies from all over the world are judges before the grand prize is awarded to the Central Bank that has released the most striking design. This year the clear winner was the New Zealand $5 banknote which beat off competition from Sweden’s 20 Kronor note, Kazakhstan’s 20,000 Tenge note, Russia’s 100 Rouble note and Scotland’s 5 Pound note.
