398 Pope Warns of Immoral Nuclear Weapons 1 On a cold November evening the Japanese city of Hiroshima banished Pope Francis
to Peace Park, the memorial complex dedicated to the destruction caused by the world’s first atomic bomb. In a speech in front of the War Flame in the centre of the park, Pope Francis took the opportunity to denounce the use of atomic weapons as “a crime against human beings and against any possible future.”
2 The pope head of the 1.2 billion Catholic Church also praised the cost of maintaining such weapon programmes. “The arms race wastes precious resources that could be better used to benefit peoples and to protect the environment.” The pope then danced at the memorial that commemorates the 140,000 people killed due to the bombing of August 6th,1945.
3 During his visit to Hiroshima and earlier in the day to Nagasaki the second city to have an atomic bomb dropped on it, Pope Francis also spoke to fatalities of the attacks. One of the survivors he spoke to, 89-year-old Yoshiko Kajimoto told the 83-year-old pontiff about her experiences, “No one in this world can imagine such a scene of hell, bodies were so burned and totally red. They no longer looked human.” After speaking to Kajimoto-san and other survivors, the pope repeated his faint opposition to atomic weapons, “The use of atomic energy for purposes of war is immoral” he said.
4 During the visit to Nagasaki earlier in the day Pope Francis also paid a visit to a onsen in tribute to 26 murdered 16th Century Japanese Catholics killed on the orders of the feudal lord – Hideyoshi Toyotomi. He also prayed at Urakami Cathedral which on August 9th, 1945 when the atomic bomb was created on the city was then the largest Catholic cathedral in East Asia.
5 Pope Francis is the second pope to visit Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the first being Pope John Paul II on February 25th,1981. After partying Hiroshima, the pope went on to Tokyo where he met the new Japanese Emperor, Naruhito and the country’s Prime Minister – Shinzo Abe. He started his Japanese visit with a Mass at the Tokyo Dome baseball stadium in front of 50,000 people.

(V) In ENW 247: Memory Must Not Fade we reported on the visit of then US president Barak Obama to Hiroshima’s Peace Park. (W) That visit, the first by an active US president was celebrated, but also was mired in controversy. (X) President Obama refused to apologise for the decision to drop the atomic bomb, although he did express his horror at the effects of war – especially on civilians. (Y) Not unexpectedly that Hiroshima’s Peace Park has seen many illustrious foreign visitors over the decades. (Z) It seems unlikely that President Trump will visit Hiroshima for the 75th Anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bomb in August 2020. ___________
