How many continents are there on Earth? One of the first facts most people learn in school is that there are seven continents, the biggest is Asia and the 1: next/2nd/smallest is Australasia. Well, that may actually not be quite true, because according to a team of scientists from the International Discovery Program (IDP) the Earth has actually eight continents, and they are not talking about the 2: mythical/debated/undiscovered lost continent of Atlantis! No, this new continent is called Zealandia and is located in the South Pacific Ocean.

The researchers claim that Zealandia is the world’s 8th continent and at 1.9m square miles is about two-thirds the size of 3: Australia/Africa/Europe and would be the smallest on Earth. The continent is made up of New Zealand, New Caledonia and two Australian islands – Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island. However, the vast majority of its landmass – about 94% is under the 4: North/South/East Pacific Ocean.

The name Zealandia was first used by American geophysicist Bruce Luyendyk in 1995, but at that point it was believed not to be one unified landmass. However, earlier this year a team of 30 international scientists using fresh 5: seismic/satellite/infra-red data concluded that Zealandia was “a unified landmass and therefore a continent.” They 6: wrote/announced/published their findings titled – Zealandia: Earth’s Hidden Continent in the journal of Geological Society of America in the summer of 2017.

4 Zealandia is believed to have broken away from modern day Australia between 60 and 85 7: thousand/million/billion years ago. The new continent is only 15 miles off the coast of 8: Queensland/Victoria/Tasmania. Currently the team of scientists from the IDP is attempting to drill about 2,6000 feet into the sea floor beneath the Tasman Sea. The expedition co-chief scientist Gerald Dickens from Rice University in Texas said of the project, “The expedition will answer many lingering questions about Zelandia.”

5 The continent of Zealandia is not the first mysterious continent that scientists, geologists and adventure 9: freaks/enthusiasts/fans have searched for. Perhaps the most famous ‘lost continent’ is Atlantis – a huge island similar in size to Australia that was first mentioned by Greek philosopher Plato in 380 BC. For the last 23 centuries people from all over the world have 10: failed/died/attempted to locate Atlantis, unsuccessfully. Of course if Atlantis is ever discovered in the future it will become the Earth’s 9th continent as Zealandia has now become the 8th!
