320 Feminism is Declared 2017 Word of the Year! 1

The 1: American/Canadian/Mexican-based dictionary Merriam-Webster has announced that its word of the year for 2017 is…feminism! The company that produces both paper and digital versions of its dictionary revealed that in the 2: 12/11/10 months and two weeks of this year lookups for the word feminism has shown a 70% 3: increase/pick-up/scale on 2016.

2

The editor-at-large of the dictionary Peter Sokolowski told Associated Press that he was not 4: surprised/shocked/amazed by the increase in the volume of lookups. The announcement followed the firings of men in leading positions in sport, politics and the media, Mr Sokolowski said that 5: big/gigantic/unusual spikes in lookups for the word ‘feminism’ often followed these revelations. “The word feminism is being used as a protest. What does it mean to be a feminist? That is why people go to a dictionary.”

3

It has been a sobering year for equality between the sexes as 6: abuse/reports/scandals have erupted around the world following revelations of sexual harassment by leading male celebrities. These scandals have created the #metoo movement which began in October 2017. The phrase was created by social activist Tarana Burke and then 7: popularised/invented/tweeted by actress Alyssa Milano. They encouraged women to tweet it to publicise their accounts of misogynistic 8: attitude/behaviour/crimes.

4 The phrase #metoo has gone viral on social media around the world and was tweeted 500,000 times within the first 24 hours of its release. Within one day of first being used on 9: Weibo/Facebook/Instagram, 12 million posts by more than 4.7million people had included the phrase. Some of the famous women who used the phrase on social media 10: included/excluded/encompassed, Sheryl Crow, Viola Davis, Rosario Dawson, Ellen DeGeneres, Lady Gaga, Debra Messing, Elizabeth Warren and Reese Witherspoon.

5 The origins of the word ‘feminism’ are unclear but it was first used in the Merriam-Webster dictionary in 11: 1641/1741/1841 by the founder Noah Webster. He defined feminism as simply, “the qualities of a female”. In 2017 the dictionary defined feminism as “the 12: idea/theory/notion of the political, economic and social equality of the sexes” and “organised activities on behalf of women’s rights and interests.”

6 ENW hopes that as the world moves into 2018 that the word ‘feminism’ continues to play a 13: strong/powerful/weak advocating role in all aspects of people’s daily lives, and not just as a response to harassment scandals.
