Before this pro- gram started, they were totally unaware of what life was like outside of the orphanage and inside of a home seng. We really had to teach them so much, but they have made strides and are learning so much. I can say that this is a very good program that helps the youth and has a bright future. It is a blessing to be a part of something that can help to provide youth with the opportunies that they need to take care of themselves and their future families. My wishes and dreams for Emmaus House are that we will come to the point where we can find the financial support that we need to be able to help many more people. I think it is im- portant to find a nice piece of land for us to develop our program into something that is lasng and will benefit many in Northern Hai. Quarterly Newsletter Volume 7 June 2015

Emmaus House Cap Haitien, Haiti

HOUSE PARENT - JONATHAN RAFAEL

The Emmaus House program carries a lot of changes in the life of the youth. It brings changes in their devel-opment in school, development into independent young adults, in the development of their spiritual lives, and pushes them to take responsibility for their lives.

As the head of the household, I have seen remarkable improvements in their social relationships with for-eigners as well as other Haitians. They have learned how to better form healthy relationships with those that are active in their lives. We have also seen big improvements in their understanding and their com-prehension of what real life is like. Before this pro-gram started, they were totally unaware of what life was like outside of the orphanage and inside of a home setting. We really had to teach them so much, but they have made strides and are learning so much.

I can say that this is a very good program that helps the youth and has a bright future. It is a blessing to be a part of something that can help to provide youth

with the opportunities that they need to take care of themselves and their future families.

My wishes and dreams for Emmaus House are that we will come to the point where we can find the financial support that we need to be able to help many more people. I think it is im-portant to find a nice piece of land for us to develop our program into something that is lasting and will benefit many in Northern Haiti.

Jonathan Rafael – House Parent for Emmaus House.

It is amazing to have supporters that work with

us, step up and help with our needs. Our recent

fundraiser was fully funded by you. Thank you!

EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES

Andy recently completed the 10th grade is now going to enter professional school in Port au Prince to be a Heavy Machine Operator. After completion he will be guaranteed a job an will be an integral part of Haiti rebuilding post Earthquake. We need $4,000 to cover education and living expenses for 6 months and we have raised $4,000!

Willey recently completed the 10th grade and is in-terested in attending a local professional school in Cap Haitian to learn cruise ship hospitality. With his English skills, outgoing personality and hard work ethic Willey has the potential to thrive in the growing tourism industry in Haiti. We need $3,500 for Willey's educa-tion. So far we have raised $0.

Merly is a recent graduate and will be entering the first Physical Therapy program in Leogane, Haiti. THEA, a Christian organization dedicated to education in Haiti, will be partnering with Emmaus House to cover her educa-tion expenses. Her living expenses are estimated to be less than $250 each month.. So far we have raised $0.

Djooly is a recent graduate and his goal is to attend a university in the United States to pursue an Engineering degree. Djooly is a natural lead-er and wants to use his profession to help improve his country and be able to financially give back to Emmaus House one day. We are cur-rently working on his paperwork to apply for schools. We are estimat-ing he will need between $32,000-$52,000 to cover all four years based on scholarship eligibility. So far we have raised $1,350.

It's been two years now since Emmaus House began and now our first set of young adults are ready to advance on to pursue higher education and professional training. If you are interested in assisting financially with Djooly, Andy, Willey, or Merly please contact Jillian at [email protected] for more information.

Papouch came to live at the orphanage when he was 10 years old. After both of his parents passed away he lived with his grandmother and cousins in Cap-Haitien. They could no longer care for him and brought him to live at the orphanage. Having never attended school he entered the first grade at 10 years old be-cause in Haiti there is no system for testing out of grade levels. He struggled in previous years to pass his grade but has improved his performance and this year he successfully completed the 8th grade.

Higher education is important for securing a job in Haiti. With only a secondary education there are not jobs available. Pa-pouch’s plan for higher education involves studying tourism. After 1 or 2 more years of secondary school he will apply for tourism school enabling him to get involved with this growing industry in Haiti. Jobs available to him after completing his higher education would include working at a beach resort or high-end hotel. Pa-pouch is already thinking about his future in the tourism industry. This summer he is proactively taking an English class at a tourism school in Cap-Haitien to improve his skills and start learning more about the profession. Attending a higher education program like tourism school could be com-pleted in as quickly as one year and will make a lifetime of difference.

Papouch’s interest in photography remains strong. He has been working with Hunter to learn the trade and assists on assignments. He prefers being behind the camera to being in front of it and has an eye for get-ting the perfect shot. Papouch hopes to be able to use his photography skills to earn side jobs while he works with tourists and meets other professionals. This work alone would not be enough to support himself and his fu-ture family which is one reason why higher education is important for him.

With the Emmaus House behavior management plan Papouch is consistently earning the highest level, which is level 4. This shows him to be responsible and respectful in his daily life. He completes his chores, shares in the day to day workload, and shows respect to the other youth and the house parents. He is always willing to help when he sees a need and likes to give back to those around him. Papouch can be hard to get to know as he is often shy and reserved. Passionate about things he is interested in, he does not give up easily. He is very persistent and will stay with something until it is completed. This summer he looks forward to spending additional time with his friends playing soccer and basketball.

MEET PAPOUCH

Sponsorship is a valuable tool for our youth, however, as you might guess, Emmaus House also provides housing, utilities, fuel, directors

and mentors to provide guidance, etc. required to provide a safe, comfortable living environment. Currently we are also seeking ongo-

ing support to meet those needs so we can keep the individual youth sponsorship levels at a reasonable level. Please help us reach out

to individual donors and/or take this cause to your congregation so this important work can continue.
