How Do YourChildren Get To and

From School?

If they walk, take a bike or ride the bus, there are important safety tips parents should be aware of to ensure your little scholars make it to the classroom and back home safely. During the back-to-school season — in August and September — at Children’s Medical Center, the Emergency Department

sees an increase in trauma-related pedestrian, bicycle and school bus injuries — many of which are preventable by following some simple safety guidelines.

WalkingTo prevent accidents, follow these tips for pedestrian safety:• Children should walk with an adult until they are at least 10 years old, and they should hold a grown-up’s hand when they cross the street or are in parking lots. • Always cross the street at a corner or at a crosswalk; cross with a crossing guard if there is one. • Walk on a sidewalk• Look left, then right, then left again before crossing the street. Continue looking while you cross. • After dark, make sure children wear light-colored clothing or clothing with reflective material. • Only cross in front of a bus when the driver says it is safe to do so. • Do not cross behind the bus or where a driver cannot see you. • Do not run onto a street for a ball, pet or any other reason. • Children should always play in a backyard or playground when they are outside and stay away from streets or parking lots whenever possible.

Riding a bike• Make sure your child wears a helmet that fits properly. • Make sure the bike is the right size for your child. • Bike helmets are for biking; they should not be worn on the playground or where the straps could become tangled on equipment. • Learn and obey all traffic laws. Ride on the right side of the road, with traffic, not against it. Stay as far to the right as possible. • Do not ride a bicycle when it is dark, foggy or in other low-visibility conditions.

Riding a bus• Keep out of the danger zone. The bus driver can’t see you if you’re standing closer than 10 feet to the bus. • If something falls under the bus, tell the bus driver. Never try to pick it up yourself. • While waiting for the bus, stay in a safe place away from the street. • When you get on or off the bus, look for the bus safety lights and make sure they are flashing. • Be alert to traffic. • When the bus driver says it is safe to cross the street, remember to cross in front of the bus.

Manvel High School’s CTE Department participated in the National Ground Hog Job Shadowing Day on Feb. 1. This year marked the second year for CTE Job Shadowing Day, and it was a huge success. 131 students job shadowed professionals in varying careers such as neurosurgery at the medical center, teaching in local schools, and owners of neighborhood businesses.

Manvel High’s CTE Department Chair, LaKisha Holloway was pleased and excited with the community’s participation in the event and plans to include more and more community members in the future.

The CTE Department at MHS would like to thank all of the professionals that hosted the Manvel students for our 2013 Job Shadowing Day. We look forward to an even greater event next year.

Alvin ISD School Board Election Set for May 11

The Alvin ISD School Board Election will be held on May 11, and the following positions are up for election this year: Position 4 held by Tiffany Wennerstrom, and Position 5 held by Eddie Martinez.

Wennerstrom and Martinez have both filed for re-election of their current positions. To date, the only other individual who has filed to run is Nicole Tonini of Pearland. Tonini has filed to run against Martinez for Position 5.

To be eligible for election, a local school board candidate must be 1) a qualified and registered voter 2) a resident of the Alvin ISD for six months before the filing deadline (March 1, 2013), and 3) a resident of Texas for 12 months before the filing deadline. School district trustees are elected by popular vote, and serve three-year staggered terms so that the entire board is not up for election at the same time. School board members receive no compensation.

Early voting in the school board election begins on Monday, April 29, and continues until Tuesday, May 7 at locations throughout Brazoria County. The key roles and responsibilities of the school board are to ensure creation of a vision and goals for the district, and evaluate district success; adopt policies that guide district actions, oversee and evaluate the superintendent’s progress and success; approve annual budgets consistent with the vision of the district; and communicate the district’s vision and success to the community. Shadow Creek RanchLandscaping Guidelines

Owners are responsible for landscaping all areas on their property and the portion of the street right of way between the property line and the street curb. Plantings other than groundcovers and low growing ornamentals between the street curb and the paved sidewalk is discouraged in order to preserve adequate sight lines for motorists. Automatic irrigation systems for all residential lots is encouraged, but not required. Installation of all landscaping must occur immediately upon occupancy of the house or within 30 days after completion of construction, whichever occurs first. Installation of landscaping, including materials and workmanship, must be in conformance with acceptable industry standards.

Front Yards- All Lots

All lots shall have a minimum number of trees from Appendix A-1D located in the front yards. Refer to the lot size breakdown that follows for specific minimum requirements.

PreparationPrepare your favorite cake mix according to the directions on the package. Bake 2 (9-inch) round cakes.

Leave 1 cake whole. Cut remaining cake layer into 3 pieces as shown. The bowtie is the center of the cake and the remaining two pieces are the ears! Frost as you please to make your own “favorite” rabbit. Several decorating ideas include using black and red licorice strings, round junior mints, white mints, skittles, etc. Simple canned white frosting, coconut, and food coloring finish of your special bunny!

There are countless books, articles, videos, and web sites that can guide us on how to lose weight and get in shape. You would think that we would be the fittest generation in the world. However, statistically, obesity in America has steadily increased to 60 million Americans 20 years and older. In addition, 9 million children and teens ages 6-19 are already overweight.

As in many things, it’s about getting back to the basics. I would like to give you some ‘food for thought’ as you focus on your health.

* More calories burned than taken in equals weight loss. Start moving even if it’s simply taking a brisk walk.

Fat in food stores as fat in the body. Protein and carbohydrates in food that are not used up as energy within a day are stored by the body as fat. Pay attention to food labels.

The body has its own ‘survival mode’. If the body does not get enough calories (energy) to function properly, it will see itself in a state of starvation and store all food you eat as fat and cause your body’s metabolism (speed at which calories are used up) to slow down. Eat a healthy snack between meals like fruit and nuts and do NOT skip meals.

Fiber attaches to fat in the blood stream before the fat is stored as fat and takes it out of the body in the form of waste. Eat more vegetables and whole grains.

The body’s ‘survival mode’ will instigate water retention if enough water is not consumed on a daily basis.

Plan ahead. Meals, as well as exercise, should be planned ahead. Best intentions fail due to lack of planning.

Control your thoughts? The biggest obstacle to living a healthy lifestyle is between your ears. One thought can change your emotions, what you do and where you go. It’s up to you to choose what you allow to go through your mind 24/7.

I would suggest starting a health lifestyle by paying attention to what thoughts go through your mind every second of the day. Start setting boundaries. You control what goes in your mouth, what direction your feet take and the thoughts that make you who you are. No matter where you are in life, learn to value yourself through your own eyes and not through the eyes of others.

The 2nd Annual Shadow Creek Ranch Triathlon returns to our community on Sunday, July 15th. In the first year, we had 650 athletes from around greater Houston competing in the race, many of which are your neighbors. They also had over 100 volunteers, also many of which live in Shadow Creek Ranch. This year, they are expecting over 800 athletes to race this sprint distance event. The race hub is the Reflection Bay water park parking lot. The race benefits the American Diabetes Association. They are actively seeking volunteers for both Saturday set up and Sunday race day. Alvin ISD hosted the Annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Art Show Open House at Manvel High School.

Students from every school in the District submitted artwork which was judged privately by a team from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Winning pieces will be judged once more, along with artwork from other school districts in the spring during the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Best of Show winners were Yaeji Lee, twelfth grade student at Manvel High School, Christine Estrada, an eighth grader at Alvin Junior High School, and Garrett Sassin, a third grade student at Savannah Lakes Elementary.

Gold Medal winners were Regina Gomez, tenth grader at Alvin High School, Alina Tonu, twelfth grader at Manvel High School, Xochitl Cerda, an eighth grade student at Alvin Junior High School and Shannon Graybill, fifth grader at Alvin Elementary.Special Merit was awarded to Manvel High School tenth grade students Jeanna Escobar and Aaron Knight.

Teachers of the students include Ann Newlin and Drew Bettge of Manvel High School, Anne Mabry and Scott Burns of Alvin High School, Karen Ender of Alvin Junior High School, Michael Somers of Alvin Elementary, and Jenny Koch of Savannah Lakes Elementary.

“Everyone involved worked extremely hard in preparation for the art show. We are very proud of our students and staff for being dedicated and working tirelessly. Congratulations to all of the students who placed. This competition is just one of the many things that we do with our students throughout the year to enhance their understanding and love for the arts,” said LaKeisha McGowen, Alvin ISD coordinator of fine arts.


Pearland Police Department Neighborhood Watch

According the Pearland Police Department website, the Neighborhood Watch Program is organized to enable the police and the community to work together to make specific geographical areas more crime resistant to reduce crime. It is a citizen involvement, neighborhood and community-based effort, designed to help citizens and the police department in preventing primarily residential burglaries.

Shadow Creek Ranch HOA would like to encourage its residents to communicate with your local Police Officers in continuing to make Shadow Creek Ranch a safe place to live.

Pearland Police Department goes on to say that a Watch can be organized around any geographic area. Police departments across the country are learning that community participation in anti-crime programs is crucial. One of the most effective ways to promote citizen interaction with police is the sharing of information. Citizen groups determine specific needs or problems and then share this information with local police. The police then act on this information and report back to the

group on their progress. This program also works when the police go to public groups and organizations and make them aware of specific criminal activities, or the needs of the police department.

Helpful Tips:

• LOCK YOUR CAR• At home or on the road, keep valuables out of plain sight • Secure purses, computers, GPS systems, radar detectors, mp3 players, etc in the home or in the trunk • Bags, briefcases or backpacks make tempting targets for car burglars; don’t leave them in the car. • Don’t trust that window tint will keep your valuables hidden• Citizens should call the police when they see any suspicious persons, activity or circumstance. Unfamiliar vehicles parked for extended periods of time or persons driving slowly through neighborhoods are incidents worth calling the police.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. According to the National Cancer Institute, nearly 150,000 Americans are diagnosed with colorectal cancer each year and 49,000 will die of this disease. Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers; yet, it is the second leading cancer killer of men and women. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate as many as 60% of all colorectal cancer deaths could be avoided if everyone age 50 and over were screened for the disease. Sadly, only about one-third of eligible Texans, regardless of insurance status, get the recommended screenings that could save their lives. Everyone should strive to adopt the tips outlined below to lower one’s risk of this disease.

1. Know whether colorectal cancer runs in your family and discuss it with your health care provider 2. Get a baseline colonoscopy starting at age 50, earlier if family history of colon cancer 3. Don’t drink alcohol excessively 4. Quit smoking and other tobacco use 5. Limit amount of red meat in your diet 6. Eat at least 6 servings of fruits and vegetables daily 7. Eat 100% whole grain foods 8. Be physically active (enough to raise your heart rate) for at least 30 minutes daily 9. Maintain a healthy weight and regularly check your BMI score 10. Eat fish with omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon

Every year, nearly 14,000 Harris County residents are diagnosed with colorectal cancer and 3,000 Texans die of the disease. Each year, Hope Through Grace asks friends, family, businesses and community members to show their commitment by participating in or pledging their support at our annual “On the Move- Stamping Out Colorectal Cancer” Walk-A-Thon. It is easy to do–form a team, join a team, or pledge your support on line. Create your own web page on the HTG web site. We will walk in honor or in remembrance of those we know and love who have been impacted by colorectal cancer. There is no limit to how long or how far you walk in the 5K Walk and all who participate will receive a splendid HTG t-shirt as a memento. The Walk-a-thon is an event the whole family can enjoy with games, food, silent auction and entertainment.

SCR RECYCLE PROGRAMFREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why is the City conducting this pilot program?The purpose of the pilot program is to determine whether cart recycling will increase tonnage collected in the pilot areas and increase the amount diverted from the landfill through recycling. This information, along with customer feedback, will aid in determining cart capacity needs for the future and whether to expand the program city-wide.

Where do I place the cart for service?• The carts should be placed on the street/curb by 7:00 a.m. on your recycling day • The front of the cart should face the street (handle/wheels are on the back side of the cart).• All recyclable materials must be in the cart with the lid closed. Only recyclable materials in the cart will be picked up.

How were the pilot areas selected?Areas were chosen to provide a variety of “tests.” Older and newer neighborhoods, east and west, neighborhoods with open ditches and neighborhoods with curbs, and small and larger families were selected. Feedback from the variety of areas will help the City address issues during the program and to determine the success of the program.

Which areas are participating in the pilot program?Green Tee, areas of Shadow Creek Ranch, Cypress Village, and West Oaks are participating neighborhoods.

Is there a cost to the participants in the pilot program?The program will be conducted at no additional charge.

How big is the cart?The cart is 96-gallons. The outside dimensions are 43” tall x 29” wide x 33” deep.

Why are we using this size cart?96-gallon cart provides more capacity for recycling. The feedback we receive from you during the pilot program will assist the City in determining the size cart to recommend for a city-wide curbside cart recycling program if recommended following the pilot program.

How does recycling impact me?Participation in recycling reduces the amount of trash sent to the landfill, which affects the service provider’s rates. An increase in recycling will reduce the amount of trash deposited in the landfill and landfill disposal costs.

What day will the curbside recycling cart be serviced?The day for service will remain your current recycling day. There is no change as well as no change to other garbage services including: garbage, bulk waste, and green waste.

Do I need to bag my recyclable items?No, simply place recyclables in the cart with the lid closed.

Lakes of Shadow Creek Ranchby Mac McCune

Shadow Creek Ranch (SCR) is an urban waterfront community with 19 lakes and ponds. Although aesthetics of the water is important, the primary purpose of these lakes and ponds is for flood control, commonly known as detention. Therefore, certain design features have been incorporated to insure adequate control of runoff water during rainfall events.

There is a total of 190 surface acres of water with an average depth of six (6) feet for a total of 1,140 acre-feet of water approximately 370 million gallons of water. Water lost to daily evaporation and normal seepage is replenished by makeup water wells which provides groundwater directly to the lakes. Lake water is also used to irrigate the common grounds of the community.

Due to certain groundwater restrictions regulated by the State, the water from the wells is purchased by SCR and, although less expensive than potable district water, is costly and will continue to become more and more expensive as the push for reducing our dependency on groundwater and converting to surface water ramps up. Therefore, it is important to conserve water as much as possible.

To help maintain water quality in the lakes, there are over 50 floating fountains which provide circulation, aeration and aesthetics. There are also a total of over 200 underwater lights to illuminate the fountains at night.

Due to the detention aspect of the lake system, incoming runoff water helps to keep bottom sediments in suspension giving the water a turbid appearance. During periods of no rainfall, some of the larger particles may settle to the bottom improving clarity. The application of lake dye can help mask the turbidity while giving the water a pleasant blueish color. However, it is very expensive to dye and the longevity, again, due to detention, can be short-lived especially with our erratic weather.

The lakes are maintained weekly by Lake Management Services, L.P., who has been in business for over 30 years and maintains many other waterfront communities in the Greater Houston area. Each visit, the service crew, comprising of a foreman, a licensed applicator and a certified fountain repair technician, inspects the lakes performing various water quality tests, cleaning and repairing fountains, replacing light bulbs, applying chemicals, monitoring the water wells and reporting pumpage to the Brazoria County Groundwater Conservation District.


Volunteer OpportunitiesPearland is a dynamic and growing community with many opportunities for residents to “get involved” in activities that enhance the community. Volunteer contributions are a value-added enhancement to City services and provide the volunteer with a unique perspective of City government and non-profit organizations.

Volunteers have an opportunity to discover new interests, meet new people, and develop new skills.

Assignments can be made available on a long and short term basis depending on the needs of the department and volunteer. Your volunteer services are greatly appreciated.

Animal ControlThe City of Pearland Animal Control & Adoption Center is seeking volunteers to walk dogs, help with cats and other animals, assist with off-site adoptions, help residents search for lost pets, take photos of animals in need of a home, clean Adoption Center facilities, and more.

Citizen’s Police AcademyHave you ever wondered, “Why do officer’s do that?” Would you like to gain working knowledge of the duties of a police officer? Students will receive instruction on Thursday nights from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on the different aspects of policing. Course topics include the police hiring process, Penal Code and Transportation Code, Arrest Procedures and Crash Investigation. There is no cost to attend and graduates become part of the Pearland Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association (PCPAAA). Department.

Pearland Volunteer FirefighterYou could be part of a brave team. The Pearland Fire Department (PFD) is always recruiting individuals who have a commitment to the community and can contribute the time to become a professional-class volunteer firefighter. . Parks and Recreation Volunteers are invited to help with various stewardship activities in city parks, trails, and natural areas. Activities vary by season, and training and tools will be provided, so no prior experience is needed, only the desire to help. Opportunities are available in all neighborhoods, and many activities are great for large groups, families, or youth groups with adult supervisors. Volunteers can also support the City of Pearland Parks & Recreation special events.

Eyes of PearlandThe Eyes of Pearland could use a few more “eyes.” The volunteer citizens group, The Eyes of Pearland, assists the City in identifying current and potential health code violations. In the awareness program, volunteers do not perform enforcement, but instead

assist in education, identification and notification. As part of training, the group attends 6 hours of classes over a three-week period at various times throughout the year, focusing on City code of ordinances and violations.

Pearland was recently rated as one of the safest cities in the United States. Of the top 50 cities, Pearland was ranked No. 48, making it one of five Texas cities on the list according to “Congressional Quarterly,” a Washington D.C. publication that releases a list of the nation’s safest cities once each year.

Pearland Mayor Tom Reid said he was proud to know Pearland was among the top tier cities on the list and praised the work of local law enforcement.

“Pearland’s star is definately on the rise,” Reid said when contacted by The Journal. “Being rated as among the safest cities speaks very highly of our city. The quality of our Police Department and

the individual men and women who work to keep our city safe have helped to accomplish that. We also have a very active and committed Citizens Police Academy and neighborhood crime watch program which has also contributed to our success as a community.”

Other cities among the top 50 were Allen, which ranked No.18; Frisco ranked as No. 30 and Round Rock as No. 47.

Sugar Land was ranked No. 20 and joined Pearland as the only two Houston-area cities to be placed among the top 50. League City was ranked as No. 68. College Station was No. 108 and Pasadena made it to the list at No. 206.

The list was based on a comparison of cities with populations of 75,000 or more using crime data reports released by the F.B.I. in six categories: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and motor vehicle theft.

According to the F.B.I.’s most recent Uniform Crime Report, Pearland’s overall violent crime rate decreased 2.4 percent in 2011 going from 128 incidents reported in 2010 to 125 in 2011.The murder rate declined from three reported incidents in 2010 to two in 2011. The number of robberies remained the same with 29 incidents reported both years. Overall, property crimes decreased slightly going from 1,734 reported incidents in 2010 to 1726 in 2011.

The only significant increase noted was the number of motor vehicle thefts which rose roughly 27.7 percent, going from 83 reports in 2010 to 106 in 2011. The number of burglaries showed a slight increase of 1.2 percent with 327 incidents reported in 2010 and 331 in 2011.
