We were given life to live it, and to live it abundantly.Filled with the knowledge and grace given to us by thedivine being who resides within each and every one ofus, we are guaranteed the right to live that life which isrightfully ours. What we do with that life, and how wechoose to use it while we are here, is a choice that wewrestle with on a daily basis.

We live in a time when we are constantly beingbombarded with news, noisy images which knock usout, and which whack us and place us in situationswhere, at times, it becomes very difficult for us to liveour lives in a manner befitting the gift of life that wehave been given. Living joyfully, then, becomes a task that eludes us. Forit is easier to curl up, and be safe, within the boundariesof what we consider to be safe, and not wander off, andtake a chance, on the newness and opportunities thatcome with each new day. The church, then, being composed of many of uscollectively, at times, might become stuck in decidingwhether or not to wander out of our comfort zone -choosing to stay with what is deemed normal by society,and not living to our full potential of making disciplesfor Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

We must go beyond ourselves, and see the greaterpurpose, the bigger picture, that might not come intofocus until we let go, and let God show us, to be still andtrust that God has got this.

Our abundant lives then become the testimony to aliving God who wants us to be more focused, morepresent, in each and every moment of our lives. In doingso, we, who make up the body of a living Christ in ourchurches, our communities, our families will carry thatsentiment forward and, though collectively at times wemight be scared or weary, we will choose ultimately toflirt with failure than never to dance with our joy.

Fuimos dado la vida para vivirla, y para vivirlaabundantemente. Lleno de la inteligencia y gracia dadoa nosotros por el ser divino quien vive cada uno denosotros, tenemos garantizado el derecho de vivir esavida que es verdaderamente nuestra. Vivir gozoso, entonces, esta una tarea que nos elude.Porque es mas facil a doblarse, y ser seguro, dentro lalimite de lo que consideramos el ser seguro, y no vagar,y tomar el riesgo, de la novedad y oportunidades queviene con cada nuevo dia.

La iglesia, entonces, siendo compuesto de muchos denosotros colectivamente, a veces, estemos indeciso sisalgamos o no de nuestra zona de comodidad -escogiendo a quedarse en lo que la sociedad dice que esnormal, y no viviendo a nuestro completo potencial enhaciendo discipulos por Jesucristo para latransformacion del mundo.

Debemos ir más allá de nosotros mismos, y ver elpropósito mayor, el cuadro más grande, que podría noentrar en foco hasta que nos deshicimos, y dejar queDios nos muestra, que enmudece y confiar en que Diosha conseguido esto.

Nuestras vidas abundantes se convierten entonces en eltestimonio de un Dios vivo que nos quiere más centrado,más presente, en todas y cada momento de nuestrasvidas. De este modo, nosotros, los que componen elcuerpo de un Cristo viviente en nuestras iglesias,nuestras comunidades, nuestras familias se llevan esesentimiento hacia delante y, aunque colectivamente enocasiones podríamos tener miedo o estar fatigado,vamos a elegir en última instancia a coquetear con elfracaso de no bailar con nuestra alegría.

Dear Members and Friends of Echo Park United MethodistChurch:

May the grace and peace of God be with you now andalways.

Autumn has always been a time for evaluation. It is that timeof the year when we assess the progress that we have madeon the goals that we have set for ourselves. We compare howmuch we have already accomplished with how much we stillhave to do. It is also that time during which we reconsiderour resources. We think about how much we have alreadyused, calculate how much we have left, and come to gripswith how much we are still going to need. This work ofevaluation is critically important. It lays the foundation onwhich we begin to construct our plans for the future.

What has already been done?

! Working in partnership with Pastors David Farleyand Son Hye Kim, you have laid a firm foundationof Christian discipleship that impacts every aspectof the church’s congregational life.

! You have established a reputation as a congregationthat lives out its faith through active engagement inthe life of the community. The Jericho Prayer Walks,the Neighborhood Cleanups, and the church’swillingness to make space available for communityevents have all been well received by communitymembers.

! You have created a functioning committeestructure that allows for increased accountability.

! Using grant monies solicited by Pastor Kim from theWest District Union, the Trustees have recently hadthe church building painted to make it appearfresher and more welcoming to the neighborhood.

! Using memorial funds donated by Rich Mueller inmemory of his wife Midge, the Trustees havepurchased a new sound system for the sanctuary.The system was installed in the middle of Septemberand should make quite a difference.

What still needs to be done?

Upon my appointment as pastor, the church received alist of four priorities from the Bishop and the Cabinet.Those priorities have been embraced by the church’sAdministrative Council and will function over the nextfew years as goals to move us forward:

! Building a strong, bicultural/trilingual teambetween the pastor and the laity of the congregationso that all of us are partners together;

! Facilitating an assessment of the laity’s strengthsin order to lay a spiritual foundation for teamwork;

! Encouraging the church to go deeper in its disciplemaking efforts to examine what it really means to beand to make disciples of Jesus Christ in the Echo

In addition to these four goals, we continue to seek waysto be in even more effective ministry with the people ofEcho Park, Silverlake, Historic Filipino Town, Los Feliz,and other nearby neighborhoods. Some specific ideasthat come to my mind are:

! Finding faithful ways to share the love of Christ andbe in ministry with the diverse communities ofpost-college young people who are settling in EchoPark or who are coming to Echo Park for recreationand entertainment;

! Exploring new ways of being in ministry with thediverse, multi-generational families that have longbeen in residence in Echo Park.

! Developing vibrant communities of children, youth,young adults, middle-aged adults, and seniors thatengage them in passionately exploring what it meansto be disciples of Jesus Christ;

! Joining other faith groupsin developingmoreeffective and more intentional ministries with thosein our community who are experiencing povertyand homelessness;

! Connecting more closely with our partners inmission in The United Methodist Church at thedistrict, conference and denominational levels. Thiswill include assessing our apportioned financialsupport of the larger church.

Since we can’t do everything at once, we will need toprioritize what is most important so that we can work onit first.

What resources do we have available?

Financial Resources:

! As of the end of September, 2016, the church’sgeneral fund contains approximately $7,700.00. Thisfigure shows that we are somewhat strongerfinancially than we have been, due in large measureto generous giving by church members and friends,including a recent contribution of $2,500 made byone of our church members in honor of the Matsonfamily.

! As of Sunday, September 25, the church hadreceived $69,765 in year-to-date pledges andofferings. This is an average $1,789 per week.

! The church raised $1,047 at its recent RummageSale of September 10. Half of that money hasalready been deposited to the church’s general fund.The other half went to the United Methodist Womento support their mission projects.

! As of August 31, long and short-term rentals ofspace in the church building have brought in year-to-

Human Resources:

! Echo Park UMC has strong volunteer support fromits members and friends. You volunteer toparticipate in various ways in worship. You providefellowship meals. You participate in church workdays. You reach out in service to the community(including Jericho Prayer Walk, Community Clean-ups, Laundry Love, etc.). You teach Sunday Schooland lead Bible studies. You staff the church’sadministrative and program committees. You takepart in community events like the Echo Park AIDSPosada. You join in prayer for those in need. Youwitness to your faith in the world. You are a strongand devoted community of faithful Jesus followers.

! In Danny Bernabe, Mark Phillips and Moonok Lee,you have a strong and vibrant staff that supports thework of ministry that you, as a church community,have chosen to do.

Facilities Resources:

! We have a beautiful and good-sized church buildingthat provides space for our ministries. The sanctuary,the chapel, the first floor meeting hall, the Tallyeducation room, the music room, the kitchen, thedining room, the basement fellowship room, and thebasement hall provide the settings for some our mostimportant ministries.

! In addition, we make the church facilities availablefor use by the wider community, including meetingsby community groups, voting, weddings/funerals/quinceañeros, and important public gatherings likethe AIDS Posada. Not only do these events help thecommunity, they also bring in much-needed extraincome to the church.

! We also lease space in our building to individuals,community groups and churches that do importantwork benefiting the wider community: EchoParenting, Alianza Hondureña, Los Angeles PovertyDepartment, Micol Hebron, Ernesto de la Loza(artist), NeuróticosAnónimos, and Anointing KoreanMethodist Church. These ongoing leases also bringin much needed revenue for the church.

Community Resources:

! We are part of an engaged and diverse community.Extended families that have lived in the communityfor generations have recently been joined by newresidents consisting of young families and singleadults. The community is racially, culturally andlinguistically diverse. It also includes people withvarying degrees of financial stability, ranging fromhomeless people living on the streets to upwardlymobile professionals.

! The Field Offices of State Senator Kevin De Leónand City Councilperson Mitch O’Farrell are withinwalking distance of the Echo Park Church.

! Echo Park is also home to El Centro del Pueblo(which provides numerous services to low incomechildren, youth and families), the Hollywood SunsetFree Clinic, the Echo Park Film Center, theEdendale Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library,and the Dream Center.

! Echo Park UMC is part of the 101-LA Mission Areaof The United Methodist Church, which includesHollywood First UMC, Los Feliz UMC, NativeAmerican UM Fellowship, and Rosewood UMC. Inaddition, we have had and ongoing ministrypartnership with Saint Athanasius Episcopal Church.

What are we still going to need?

What we need depends on our vision of the ministry towhich we have been called. In conversations withformer pastors, congregational leaders, outsideobservers, and many of the rest of you, I have heardagain and again that Echo Park UMC has an expansivevision for the ministry to which it has been called. Attimes, the congregation has felt stifled by lack ofresources. But, you have never stopped dreaming andpraying about how you can be ever more faithful andeffective disciples of Jesus Christ in this neighborhoodwhere God has placed us.

The question of resources is, of course, a question offaith. As our former Bishop Mary Ann Swensonconstantly reminded us: “God may not give us enoughresources to do what we want to do, but God willalways give us the resources we need to do what we arecalled to do.” So, as we discern who we are going to beand what we are going to do during the next few years,we should not merely focus on what we currentlyhave… on what we perceive that we can do with theresources that are already available to us. Let us moveforward in faith, faithfully following our calling as wetrust that God will provide all that we need.

So, what are some of things that we need right now?How do we prayerfully strive to increase our capacityfor ministry in this place and this time?

Financial Resources:

Clearly, we need more money.

! At the present time we are not able to pay all of ourbills. We do an excellent job of keeping up withsalaries, paying for utilities, and buying necessarysupplies. But, we are currently more than $7,000 inarrears in paying our conference billings (liabilityinsurance, health insurance, workers’ compensation,ministerial pensions). This figure will be reduced byabout $3,300 when the West District kicks in with apromised assistance grant.

! And we have only paid 1.33% of our denominationalapportionments and askings. To catch up by the endof the year, we would need to write a check to theAnnual Conference for more than $19,000. This issomething we clearly cannot do.

! On October 16, Ms. Archana Carey, will bedelivering the sermon for Laity Sunday. I have nodoubt that she will speak to us about the importanceof paying our apportionments as our way ofsupporting the overall mission of The UnitedMethodist Church. Apportionments are an importantmeans by which we stay connected to the Church’sglobal mission and ministry.

! As we enter our season of stewardship, I will beasking everyone (including me) to consider the levelof our giving to the church. I hope that we will allconsider giving just a little more to support ourmission and ministry.

! In addition, we will be taking special Thanksgivingand Christmas Miracle offerings when we can goabove and beyond our normal giving to help thechurch carry out its mission.We will also be holdinga second Rummage Sale on November 5.

Human Resources:

We also need more people.

! We don’t need people who will just sit in our pewsand make our numbers look better to the Bishop andCabinet.

! What we need are more people who will do the workof the church and increase our capacity for makingdisciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation ofthe world. We need people who will participate inour Jericho Prayer Walk, in our neighborhoodcleanups, in LaundryLove, and in so much more.

! Most of all, we need people who will bring theirown callings, dreams and gifts and who will enrichour life together as the Body of Christ, empoweredby the Spirit to do God’s work in the world.

Facilities Resources:

We need to improve and to make better use of ourfacilities.

! Although we tend to make decisions about facilitiesusage based on financial considerations, we alsoneed to consider how we can best use our building toadvance our mission as the Body of Christ.

! We have to address important questions like: Wherewill we house our children’s program? Or, what kindof space do we need for our youth? What potentialrenters help us do the work that we are called to doand which ones do not?

! We also need to consider how the appearance of ourbuilding influences our ability to reach out to thecommunity. Your recent decision to paint thebuilding has made us a lot more attractive to the

Community Resources:

Echo Park UMC already has a reputation as acommunity that readily collaborates with other churchesand community groups to improve the neighborhood inwhich we are located. So, the real question for us ishow do we create stronger and healthier connections toaddress issues of significant concern to the peoplearound us? How do we bring the love of God, the graceof Jesus Christ and the power of the Spirit to bear as wework with our elected officials and partner groups inbuilding a strong and unified Echo Park. A number ofopportunities will be presenting themselves in the nextseveral weeks:

! LaundryLove is a collaborative effort between EchoPark UMC, St. Athanasius Episcopal Church, andAroma Coin Laundry. We meet at 5:30pm every 3rd

Tuesday to help people experiencing poverty andhomelessness to do their laundry. The nextopportunity is October 18.

! The Echo Park AIDS Posada, which is acollaborative effort between Echo Park UMC, theHollywood Sunset Free Clinic and several othercommunity organizations will be taking place onFriday evening December 2. The Posada begins atthe Free Clinic, proceeds down Sunset Blvd. andthen concludes at the church with a brief time ofdevotions and a posole dinner. I hope as many aspossible will take part.

! The 101-LA Mission Area of The United MethodistChurch will be scheduling delegations to visitCouncilpersons Mitch O’Farrell and David Ryu todiscuss issues related to housing and homelessnessin Los Angeles and to offer the support of thechurches to move forward in solving this seeminginsoluble crisis in our city. We’ll provide you withmore information about these meetings as we get it.

! There are, of course, lots of opportunities to partnerwith other individuals and groups in the community.If you have ideas, let us know.

We pray for GREGORIA DECORO who left for thePhilippines. Different sources have conflicting versions ofthe purpose of her trip. Some say she is returning after anindefinite amount of time, and others say that she is returningto the Philippines for good. Let us pray for God’s constantblessings upon her regardless of her final decision.....

FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The Board of Trustees was well represented at ourSeptember 10 Rummage Sale. Eight of the nine Trusteesworked in one way or another to help make the sale a grandsuccess. Some sorted rummage while others set up tabledisplays, unloaded storage rooms, moved heavy furniture,assisted buyers during the sale itself, stayed on till the lastpiece of rummage had been either put back in storage (readon to find out more details about this), thrown away, orpacked for the Salvation Army pick-up. We especially thankMark Phillips coordinating this and helping the SalvationArmy pick-up crew load their trucks during the three tripsthey made to pick up all the leftovers.

Our next Rummage Sale is scheduled for Saturday,November 5. We saved some of the good (looks almost new)clothing, appliances and furniture from the last RummageSale to try to sell them this time. However, we need moresaleable items to supplement what we have saved, so pleaseask your family, friends and neighbors, to donate more itemsfor the sale. As usual, we need help in setting up on Friday,November 4, assisting buyers between 9:a.m. and 4:00 p.m.and cleaning up on Saturday, November 5. Let us promiseourselves that this coming Rummage Sale will be bigger andmore financially rewarding for our Church and us.

Our new sanctuary sound system has been installed. We nowhave four speakers instead of two so that the people seated inthe back pews can hear just as well as those seated up front.

La Junta de Fideicomisarios estuvo bien representada ennuestra Venta de Cosas Usadas el 10 de Septiembre. We have a wireless microphone that can be used anywherein the sanctuary. The system also includes four sets ofwireless headphones which can be used by anyone with ahearing problem during the service.

All of this has been made possible by a memorial gifthonoring three long-time members of our church - MadgetteWalsh Mueller, Ruth Burnham Walsh, and Madge BrodieBurnham. In 1972, Madgette, her husband, Richard, and theirthree daughters, Donna, Karen, and Cathy, moved toCorvallis, Oregon, and transferred their membership to theCorvallis UMC. Madgette passed away in 1972, but herhusband wanted the family remembered, thus, the memorialgift.

We thank Retha Matson (who knew the family) for being thecontact person for this gift. We also thank LaDell Stapp forcontracting to have the new audio equipment purchased andinstalled. And, most of all, we thank Richard Mueller formaking the memorial gift possible. Richard, who has ahearing problem, hopes one day to visit our church, andlisten to a worship service. We hope he can.

A blessed Harvest season to everyone. We give praise to Godfor blessing us with a wonderful productive Rummage Sale.We give thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make oursale a success - from the setting up to the taking down andthe cleaning up afterwards. This reminds of a saying byHelen Keller: “Alone, we can do so little, but together, wecan do so much.” For those of you who could not assist atour September Rummage Sale, we have scheduled anotherone on November 5, 2016. We really need help with lettingpeople know about our Rummage Sale, and the mosteffective way of advertising it is by “word of mouth,”meaning, people we talk to (our family, our friends, ourneighbors, our internet social circles, etc.) because they willremember it more than if they read about it from a flyer orthe newspaper. Besides, because of your personalrelationship with them, you can ask them to spread the wordto their own personal circle of friends and relatives. Ofcourse, we will still need help in setting up, taking down, andcleaning up afterwards, but we have already sorted out anddiscarded the “unsaleable” items, so these activities will beeasier now than during our previous sales.

Damos graciasa todos que trabajaron fuertemente para hacer de esto unexito - desde la preparacion y la terminacion y la limpiezadespues. She mentioned the need for us to educate allChurches, not just our own Methodist Church, but allchurches of every denomination and religion, to become“BABY-FRIENDLY” so that every mother can feel relaxedwhen she needs to breast-feed her baby, even in the middleof a service.

On Saturday, October 22, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., wewill have our Cal-Pac UMW Annual Celebration atToberman Neighborhood Center, 131 North Grand Avenue,San Pedro, CA 90731, which is one is one of our missionsites in Southern California. Also on October 22, from 7:30to 9:30 p.m., the Echo Park UMW will be providing andserving refreshments for a Church Fund-Raising Concert ofCountry Folk Blues Music featuring our own Mark Phillipsand his group (flyers available at the Church).

He is a marvelous speaker and he showed ussome terrific pictures that he had taken. Ladies we will meet on the third Sunday of October which isalso Laity Sunday. We have invited Archana Carey, ourGuest Preacher for that Sunday, to join us in our UMWmeeting after Fellowship Time. We are hoping that ouryoung ladies can all join us for that meeting and invite moreof their friends to join us. Remember that you do not have tobe a member of the Church to be a member of the UMW.

We also would like to continue reading more books so thatwe can surpass what we have already achieved in theReading Program. There are many books in the file cabinetin the Fellowship Room. We just ask that you sign in andsign out for the book with your name and the dates. We willcontinue to run this program using the honor system.
