Welcome to a New Year - a time associated withnewness, a fresh start and resolutions; a time where weall are still under the spell of warm, fuzzy feelingsexperienced during the holidays that will soon beengulfed by our daily hectic lives and which will shiftour focus back to the mundane and unimportant stuffthat surrounds us. What are we to do, then, in order tomaintain that spirit which the birth of that babe inJerusalem has instilled in us?

I say that we all daily concentrate in committing ourlives to doing small things with great love, as MotherTheresa advices. With love, the possibilities are endless,I like to believe. I don’t refer to a romantic love but alove that allows us to open our hearts, our minds andoffer an embrace to an idea or someone that might becompletely different than you. Love that allows you torecognize in that person’s eyes the divine that exists intheir core is the same existence that breathes and abidesin you and each and every one of us.

Doing small things with great love is what inspired awoman to dedicate her life to feeding and loving thepeople of Calcutta. Many small things with great lovecame together and inspired the marches in Selma and allacross this nation 50 years ago this month where peoplecame together as one body, both black and white, todemand civil rights for all of God’s children in ourcountry. Small things with great love is whatcollectively as a nation each and every one of us offeredto each other after the streets of New York were coveredin concrete dust after the attacks of September 11.

We, the people, God’s people, have much great love toshare, let us go about the business of the task at handand stop getting too caught up in the politics that exist inreligious ideologies. We are all God’s children and, bythe mere fact that we are alive, deserve respect and theright to live our lives, and live them abundantly.

Let us come together in this New Year and do greatthings, as small as they might appear to common folks,but do them with kindness, a giving heart, and, aboveall, great love.

Bienvenidos a un nuevo año - un tiempo asociado con lanovedad, un nuevo comienzo y resoluciones; un tiempoen que todos estamos todavía bajo el encanto de losdifusos sentimientos cálidos experimentados durante losdías festivos que pronto será engullido por nuestrasdiaria agitada vidas y que cambiará nuestro enfoque denuevo a las cosas mundanas y sin importancia que nosrodea. ¿Qué vamos a hacer, entonces, con el fin demantener ese espíritu que el nacimiento de ese niño enJerusalén ha inculcado en nosotros?

According to a traditional Hebrew story, Abraham wassitting outside his tent when an old, weary traveler wascoming toward him one evening. Abraham rushed out,greeted him, and then invited him into his tent. There hewashed the old man’s feet and gave him food and drink.

The old man immediately began eating without sayingany prayer or blessing. So Abraham asked him, “Don’tyou worship God?” The old traveler replied, “I worshipthe fire and reverence no other god.” When he heardthis, Abraham became incensed, grabbed the old man bythe shoulders, and threw him out his tent into the coldnight air.

When the old man departed, God called to his friend,Abraham, and asked where the stranger was. Abrahamreplied, “I forced him out because he did not worshipyou.” God answered, “I have suffered him these eightyyears although he dishonors me. Could you not bepatient with him one night?”

A poem by an unknown author reads, “Patience is avirtue, possess it if you can. Found seldom in a woman,never in a man.” Patience is one of the nine fruits thatthe Spirit produces in the Christian’s life, and it is alsothe first characteristic of love as Paul lists it in1Corinthians 13:4, “Love is patient.” Patience is one ofthose things that set the believer apart from the world.But patience is not one of those things that come easily.

Sometimes it’s annoying strangers we have to absorb.Like the guy down the block whose dog barks all night.Or the driver poking along at 45 miles per hour in theleft lane of the freeway. Or the person ahead of us in the10-item express line at the grocery store, the person whoputs 19 items on the belt, chats with the clerk, fishes fora checkbook only after everything has been rung up, andthen argues about the bill.

Sometimes it’s people in our own family. It’s ournearest and dearest who really try our patience.Wouldn’t it be good if there were not other people toannoy us, or bother us, or frustrate us? But life cannot belived in isolation. There are always people or situationsor events that need to be handled.

As a farmer plants seeds, waters them and waits for aharvest, I need to wait for God’s time for a harvest afterI plant seeds of words, prayer and love. Lackingpatience, I get frustrated, anxious and stressed out. If I

La paciencia es una de esas cosas que marcanel creyente aparte del mundo. Pero la paciencia no esuna de esas cosas que vienen con facilidad.

A veces son extraños molestos que tenemos queabsorber. Al igual que el chico de la cuadra cuyo perroladra toda la noche. O el conductor asomando 45kilómetros por hora a lo largo del carril izquierdo de laautopista. O la persona delante de nosotros en la líneaexpresa de 10-cosas en la tienda de comestibles, lapersona que pone 19 artículos sobre la cinta, conversacon el empleado, pesca un talonario de cheques sólodespués de todo ha sido contado, y luego argumentaacerca de la cuenta.

A veces son la gente de nuestra propia familia. Looking back over myministries, God has been teaching me to be patient andto trust Him. Even though I made many mistakes andfell short because of my impatience, God has beenpatient with me and showed me His providence andpower. Lord, help me to be more patient!

“But those who wait for the Lord shall renew theirstrength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles,theyshall run and not be weary,they shall walk and notfaint.” (Isaiah 40:31)

Did you make New Year’s resolutions? I’d like to suggest thefollowing seven resolutions to accomplish as our church’sresolutions. They are very basic and simple practices we cando as Christians. If we practice these, our lives will be morejoyous, peaceful and fulfilling.

New Year’s Resolutions

1. I will celebrate each new day of my life!“This is the day which the LORD has made. Let usrejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24)

2. I will pray to God to be in His presence.“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”(James 4:8a)

3. I will give thanks and praise to God daily.“Praise the LORD. Give thanks to the LORD, for he isgood; his love endures forever.” (Psalm 106:1)

4. I will be loving in all that I do.“Let all that you do be done in love.” (1Corinthians16:14)

5. I will forgive others and myself.“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgivingeach other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”(Ephesians 4:32)

6. I will remember that God loves me dearly.“For God so love the world that he gave his one andonly Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perishbut have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

7. I will be aware that I am never alone.“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you;he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not beafraid; do not be discouraged.” (Deuteronomy 31:8)

¿Hiciste resoluciones de Año Nuevo? Me gustaría sugerir lassiguientes siete resoluciones para cumplir como lasresoluciones de nuestra iglesia. Son prácticas muy básicas ysencillas que podemos hacer como Cristianos. Si practicamosestas, nuestras vidas serán más alegre, pacífica ysatisfactoria.

FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Many thanks to LaDell Stapp for giving up a Saturdaymorning to concrete the cracks in the foundation at the southend of the building. This problem was caused by the churchsettling and was an invitation to rain water to leak into ourbasement rooms. Mixing concrete and troweling it into crackson your hands and knees is just plain hard work. Manythanks, LaDell - if the drought ends, we will check on yourhard work.

Sherman McClellan repaired the door lock to our secretary’soffice. This is an old door and the bolt on the lock was hittingtoo high on the faceplate. Sherman cut the plate so that thedoor locks again.

If you haven’t noticed, take a look at the red carpets in ourmain sanctuary. Thanks to Mark Phillips who spent hourscleaning all the red carpeting in our church before ourChristmas Sunday service. Cleaning carpets is above andbeyond the regular custodial service Mark does so well.Thanks so much for your time and effort to make ourChristmas season even nicer.

The dome and tower lights on our church have not beenworking for quite a while. The timer that turns these lights onand off has not been working properly. Many of the lightlamps have burned out. We have purchased eight new floodlamps to replace the burned out ones. In the afternoon ofFriday, December 26, Mark Phillips, Sherman McClellan,and LaDell Stapp teamed together to climb the tower to the

The room heaters in our parsonage have not worked for manyyears. They needed servicing and replacement parts. DougRequa come to the rescue of our very cold Minister. Crawlingunder the house several times on his stomach, Doug was ableto inspect the floor heater and re-attach the vent line that wasunhooked (probably by plumbers) when the waste line wasinstalled. Doug installed a new thermostat. The living roomfloor heater is now working properly and the house is warm.Doug’s son, Kenny, assisted. Many thanks for a job well donesaving the church a lot of money.

Many thanks to the Korean New Hope Mission MethodistChurch for the beautiful poinsettia plants that made our altarlook so pretty for our Christmas Services.

We congratulate and thank all those who participated in ourChristmas Eve Multi-lingual Candlelight Service who madethe Worship Service such a wonderful experience.

The front door lock at the parsonage was not workingproperly. Our Minister had to lock the front door from theinside and go in and out through the back door. ShermanMcClellan spent his Sunday afternoon at the parsonagedisassembling, repairing, and reassembling the front doorlock so that it now works properly. Our Minister now doesnot have to take many extra steps to enter the parsonage asshe has done before. Thank you, Sherm, for your time andexpertise.

Greetings, Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

As we enter into a new year, we reflect on the happenings of2014, and what challenges we face in 2015. As we, UnitedMethodist Women, learn about all the different injustices inthe world, we must work to somehow convert these injusticesinto justices. Surely, no one can do this alone. However,working together as a group, and combining our unit’sresources on the district, conference, jurisdictional, national,and international level, we will be able to realize the changesthat we dream of.

As I was reading through the January issue of ResponseMagazine, I saw what other units are doing to bring aboutchange. I challenge the women of our unit to think aboutsome instances of injustice in our community and what wecan do to help bring changes to those areas.

Ladies, is this something that we are able to do? Are we readyto take up the challenges?

Saludos, Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo:

Al entrar en un nuevo año, reflexionamos sobre losacontecimientos del 2014, y cuáles son los desafíos queenfrentamos en 2015. Mientras nosotros, Mujeres MetodistasUnidas, aprendemos acerca de las diferentes injusticias en elmundo, debemos trabajar para convertir de alguna maneraestas injusticias en justicias. Seguramente, nadie puede haceresto solo. Sin embargo, trabajar juntos como un grupo, ycombinando los recursos de nuestra unidad con los deldistrito, las conferencias, la jurisdiccional, el nacional, y elinternacional, vamos a ser capaces de realizar los cambiosque soñamos.

We should: each read five book from our reading list, onefrom each category; study two programs at our monthlymeetings; invite new members, especially from within ourcommunity to join our unit; attend as many district andconference meetings and workshops as possible, especiallythose offered by Mission U this summer; and, have a regularBible Study program for our spiritual growth. Please continueto read our Response magazine.

I personally want to thank all the women who worked so hardfor the Christmas Party. During my forced disability leave, Irealized that everything can run smoothly without mystressing myself out. So thank you very, very much to all whoworked so hard to make our Christmas Party a success,especially the setting up and cleaning afterwards. Thank youalso to Danny who managed to print all the materials we needfor the party in spite of his very heavy workload in theChurch Secretarial Office, printed the plays and songs that Iasked him to do.

The United Methodist Women would like to thank everyonefor their donations. We collected $250.00 to send to UMCORfor the Ebola project.

1) Please continue to bring recyclable items such asaluminum cans, plastic and glass bottles, to theChurch Office every Sunday. The little that each of uscan bring will be a huge amount when put together.Elizabeth Bayne is the person in charge of collectingthem and taking them to the recycling center.

2) We need more people to come and join us in cleaningand polishing the chairs of the Sanctuary everyTuesday and Wednesday. We are almost done withPhase I of the Sanctuary Chairs Cleaning Project. Weare looking forward to starting Phase II soon.Remember, many of us working together will finishthe job sooner than later. If you want to come on youravailable day and time other than Tuesday andWednesday, please let Pastor Kim know.
