Our country once again was reminded of the ignorance andhatred that still exists when nine innocent lives were takentoo soon in Charleston, South Carolina just last week.Individuals that had gathered at the end of their day to be infellowship with one another in bible study. I cannot begin toimagine the pain that the families of those fallen angels havebeen through in this last couple of days. The prayers of anation are with them and may they feel the love thatsurrounds them. As city of officials prepared for the worst in Charleston inthe days following these events the city led by the families ofthe fallen showed amazing grace and demonstrated to us allthat hate will never drive out hate only by showing love andforgiveness change will ever happen. My brothers andsisters when faced with anger, excruciating pain and loss thefamilies publicly forgave the young man that had committedthese unforgivable acts of ignorance.

In doing so they modeled Jesus last commandment to usbefore ascending to the father which was to love one another.Many are the petty thoughts and grudges that we hold againsteach other. We spend hours of wasted time focusing oninsignificant things that are not worth the time of day that weare sacrificing. Because that’s exactly what we are doing, weare in internal turmoil over external battles that we have nocontrol off and we sacrifice the beauty and blessing that iseach new day that we are given breath of life.

I ask you to keep these families in your thoughts and prayersin the days to come. I also ask you that when faced with yourown personal obstacles in your life be a little more open toresponding in love as oppose to fear and hate. Be mindfulthat a living and ever abiding loving God has not brought youthis far to let you fail. Ask yourself what can I learn from thisand how can I respond in love to this challenge that has beenset before me.

Living your life in darkness, fear and hate is the copout wayof choosing to live. Being light and love to this dark andwounded world is our challenge and the task that has beenset before us. Let us meet that challenge together knowingthat by choosing light and love the divine that is within youand me will always lead us in the right direction.

Nuestro país, una vez más fue recordado de la ignorancia y elodio que todavía existe cuando nueve vidas inocentes fuerontomadas antes del tiempo en Charleston, Carolina del Sur lasemana pasada. Las personas que se habían reunido en el finalde su día para estar en comunión unos con otros en el estudiode la Biblia. Muchos son los mezquinos pensamientos yrencores que sostenemos contra del otro. Pasamos horas detiempo perdido centrándose en cosas insignificantes que novalen el momento del día que estamos sacrificando. Porqueeso es exactamente lo que estamos haciendo, estamos en elcaos interno sobre las batallas externas que no tenemoscontrol y sacrificamos la belleza y la bendición que es cadanuevo día en que se nos da el aliento de la vida.

Les pido que mantengan estas familias en sus pensamientosy oraciones en los días por venir. También les pido quecuando se enfrentan a sus propios obstáculos personales en suvida sean un poco más abiertos para responder en el amorcomo diferencia al miedo y el odio. Tenga en cuenta que lavida y la permanencia siempre en amar a Dios no los trajohasta aquí para que usted usted falle. United Methodist pastors are appointed to a churchevery year. Some are appointed to new churches, someare reappointed back to their current churches and someretire. I was appointed to Echo Park United MethodistChurch last year as a two-year interim pastor. In my 16years of ministry as an ordained pastor I have served sixchurches. Each and every church has been a learningfield as well as a ministry field. I have learned moreabout God, myself and God’s people. It is an honor andprivilege to meet new people at a new church. Eachchurch has its own culture and atmosphere. Serving sixchurches, I learned to be more flexible, more patient,more embracing and more dependent upon God.

In the beginning when I encountered something thatlacked in the church, I thought that if I had that, it wouldbe perfect and the ministry would be more flourishing.I always hoped that my next church would have thosethat my previous church lacked. There is no such a thingas a perfect church. When I focused on what my churchwas lacking, I felt desperate and hopeless. I prayed sovery hard that God would provide all that was needed.Even after many long prayers, still all the needs weren’tmet. I longed for a better church that had more members,more money, more committed leaders with lessproblems and troubles.

There is no problem-free or trouble-free church. Thereis no church that lacks nothing. I learned that in spite ofall the problems, troubles and the lacks, it is God whobuilds and raises churches with imperfect people. “Godchose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise;God chose the weak things of the world to shame thestrong” (1Corinthians 1:27).

I also learned that God always provides me witheverything that I need to do the work that He wants meto do. My problem is my expectations and standards arehigher than God’s. When God says, “My grace isenough for you,” I say, “It is not enough for me. I wantmore.” When I ask for more strength, He says, “Mypower is made perfect in weakness.” When I ask God to

Fui designada a la Iglesia MetodistaUnida de Echo Park el año pasado como pastor interinode dos años. En mis 16 años de ministerio como unpastor ordenado he servido seis iglesias. Todas y cadaiglesia han sido un campo de aprendizaje, así como uncampo de ministerio. He aprendido más acerca de Dios,y el pueblo de Dios. Es un honor y un privilegio conocergente nueva en una nueva iglesia. Cada iglesia tiene supropia cultura y la atmósfera. Sirviendo seis iglesias,aprendí a ser más flexibles, más paciente, másaceptadora y más dependientes de Dios.

Al principio, cuando me encontré con algo que faltabaen la iglesia, pensé que si tuviera eso, sería perfecto y elministerio sería más floreciente. Siempre tuve laesperanza de que mi próxima iglesia tendría lo que a miiglesia anterior le faltaba. No hay tal cosa como unaiglesia perfecta. Cuando me enfoqué en lo que le faltabaa mi iglesia, me sentía desesperada y sin esperanza. Orébastante para que Dios proveería todo lo que senecesitaba. Incluso después de muchas oraciones largas,aun todas las necesidades no se cumplían. Anhelaba unamejor iglesia que tuviera más miembros, más dinero,más líderes comprometidos con menos problemas ydificultades

No hay iglesia sin problemas o sin dificultades No hayiglesia que no le falta nada. Me enteré de que a pesar detodos los problemas, las dificultades y las carencias,porque Dios es el que construye y levanta iglesias conpersonas imperfectas. También aprendí que Dios siempre me da todo lo quenecesito para hacer el trabajo que Él quiere que yo haga.Mi problema es que mis expectativas y las normas sonmás altas que la de Dios. The Apostle Paul said in Philippians 4:12, “I know whatit is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty.I have learned the secret of being content in any andevery situation, whether well fed or hungry, whetherliving in plenty or in want.” I am getting a glimpse ofwhat he meant.

God has used the people of Echo Park UMC to teach memany lessons. People of Echo Park UMC, you are mysisters and brothers in Christ, my flock, my encourager,my co-laborers in God’s field and God’s partners inministry. Thank you for your faithfulness, lovingkindness, patience and support. Thank you forembracing all my faults and mistakes. You are the mostwelcoming congregation among all those churches thatI have served. You have a lot of potential that God canuse to reveal His power, goodness, love and grace. Letus labor together to reach out to those lost children ofGod in the world as well as in our community. Let uspray and discern together to follow His guidance.

FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The Board of Trustees would like to thank everyone whohelped with our Sunday afternoon workday on May 31, 2015.All of the outdoor furniture received a coat of polytheline topreserve the wood from moisture and everyday uyse. We’vedone a marvelous job keeping this furniture in good conditionso that our church members and community members canenjoy using it. The outside door near the basement women’srestroom was painted blue. Now all of our outside doors arepainted blue. The cracks in the steps leading down to thisdoor were filled. Most of the cracks on the north (ReservoirStreet) side of the church were caulked. We still have touchup painting and painting of our steps to our Sanctuary doorand the ramp to the Reservoir Street door to paint, treetrimming, and window well cleaning to do. Future workdayswill be scheduled to handle these maintenance chores.

The ballast in the florescent light over our kitchen sinkburned out. Sherman McClellan’s contribution to workdaywas to install a new ballast. Many thanks again, Sherm, fordoing this.

The bottom boards on our planter boxes on the ReservoirStreet side of the church rotted out. The soil was leaking outof the planters and they looked terrible. Many thanks toLaDell Stapp for purchasing, cutting, and installing newboards on both planter boxes. We’ve done a good jobmaintaining this wooden sidewalk furniture and it reallylooks good now.

On Friday afternoon, June 19, 2015, Sherman McClellancompleted the following maintenance items at our church:

1) Replaced a bathroom window screen that had been tornapart by someone entering out church to steal from acabinet.

2) Installed a metal strip on the carpet next to the ramp doorto prevent anyone from tripping over the badly frayedcarpet edge.

4) Installed a new smoke alarm to the bathroom on the mainfloor. The new alarm is powered by a lithium battery thatis designed to last maintenance free for ten years.

5) Took measurements to replace the missing shelf guideson the lower shelf of our kitchen oven. Sherman intendsto make and install new guides.

Many thanks again, Sherm, for an afternoon of expertise andwork.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

What an awesome God we have! This month has been sobusy, and yet, God has given each one of us the strength andenergy to do what we needed to do.

First, we want to thank everyone who worked so hard tomake our Rummage Sale a success. We made $970.00, ofwhich half went to the Church General Fund for our regularexpenses, one-fourth was given to our Cal-Pac AnnualConference Missions Ministry, and the rest to our localEPUMC UMW Fund. We are, right now, in desperate needof tables. We are asking for donations for this project. Pleasemark your donations “Tables” and drop them in the Churchmailbox or the Offering Plates on Sundays.

We were given enough Scholarship Money so that ourElementary and Middle School, as well as our High SchoolYouth will be able to go to Camp this Summer. We only hadto pay the down payment of $25.00 per camper.

Lisa Palombi and I were the official delegates for EPUMC atAnnual Conference in Redlands from June 18 to 20, 2015.We had a very busy schedule, but it was also a veryspiritually uplifting experience for us. The theme for this yearis: Judgment, Justice, Joy. Each morning, we had theprivilege of hearing Dr. Tinker enlighten us as to how ourChristian forefathers treated the indigenous people in NorthAmerica, Mexico and South America. Dr. Tinker is a citizenof the Osage Nation. He is a Professor of American IndianCultures and Religious Tradition at Iliff School of Theologywhere he has brought an Indian perspective to MethodistTheology.

The highlight of Thursday was the Laity Sessions and thenLaity Dinner. Thursday evening, we had the MemorialService. There were many people memorialized includingRev. Bill Miller and Lois Farley. Afterwards, we had ourtraditional Ice Cream Social at the University church.

Friday was a day of many report from different committeesof the Church as well as Legislative Sessions. I attended the

Cada mañana, tuvimos el privilegio de escuchar elDr. Tinker quien nos iluminó en cómo nuestros antepasadosCristianos trataron a los pueblos indígenas de América delNorte, México y América del Sur. Dr. Tinker es un ciudadanode la Nación Osage. Es profesor de las Culturas IndígenasAmericanos y Tradición Religiosa en la Escuela de TeologíaIliff donde ha traído una perspectiva India para la TeologíaMetodista.

Missionary Luncheon. Friday evening was our DistrictGathering and Youth Service, which was held outdoors, andthey had a wonderful program.

Saturday was a day of debates, voting and budget. I alsoattended a UMW luncheon where Bette Lopez shared howshe started in the UMW many years ago. She now has theEmma Circle which is made up of young girls who sang forus.

The climax of Annual Conference is the Ordinations ofElders. Yes, I was exhausted when we left AnnualConference, however, I felt spiritually recharged. I want tothank our Church for choosing me to be our “Lay Member toAnnual Conference.” I thank God for giving me the staminaand health to attend.

I pray that everyone will be challenged by the message onHuman Trafficking given by Joy Prim at our UMW Sunday.Ladies, I hope as you listen that you will be encouraged to bepart of the United Methodist Women. Jennifer Ceniceros andI will be attending Mission U at Biola University from July24 to 26. Ladies, please continue to participate in the ReadingProgram. Save the date - October 3, 2015 will be our nextRummage Sale.

I feel it is such an honor to be the President of our UMWUnit.

Asistí en el Almuerzo Misionera. Viernes por la noche fuenuestro Encuentro del Distrito y el Servicio de Juventud, quese celebró al aire libre, y tenían un programa maravilloso.

El Sábado fue un día de debates, votación y presupuesto.También asistí a un almuerzo MMU donde Bette Lópezcompartió cómo empezó en la MMU hace muchos años. Ellaahora tiene el Círculo Emma que se compone de las jóvenesque cantaron para nosotros.

El clímax de la Conferencia Anual es el Ordenaciones deAncianos. Sí, yo estaba agotado cuando salimos de laConferencia Anual, sin embargo, me sentía espiritualmenterecargado. Quiero dar las gracias a nuestra Iglesia porelegirme de ser nuestro "Miembro Laico a la ConferenciaAnual." Doy gracias a Dios por darme la energía y la saludpara participar.
