Stephen Ministers Can Help When Your Days Aren’t Merry and Bright

For some people the holiday season can be a very difficult time of year. It is a time of sadness, loneliness and hopelessness, a time of self evaluation and reflecting about the past and a time of anxiety about the New Year to come. Those who have lost loved ones, are separated from loved ones, or are dealing with health issues can find it to be a very blue time. With the current state of the economy and unemployment rates, many people are likely to be feeling the financial blues, too. Too much pressure from the season brings on stress and depression. Whatever you are feeling, a Stephen Minister is available to you for prayer after every church service. You will find one in the front pew waiting to listen, hold your hand, give a welcome hug and extend God’s love through prayer with you. For further information about Stephen Ministry please contact: Cheryl Althaus, 796-6305; Rae Barho, 589-5871; Barbara Browne, 796-7434; or Sandra Fudge, 653-0786.

join the Haiti Mission TripA mission trip to Haiti has been scheduled through United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM) on April 6-13, 2013, which is one week after Easter. (Easter is March 31, 2013.) Haiti is still recovering from the devastating earthquake that occurred on January 12, 2010. UMVIM, in collaboration with Eglise Methodiste d’Haiti, is entering the third and final year of its Haiti Response Plan. The Plan has identified priority projects for earthquake recovery and other church and social needs that can be addressed by UMVIM teams. While priority projects have focused on construction, other opportunities to be involved in the local communities exist, such as English as a second language, music, working with children, and computer training. UMVIM’s theme is Christian Love in Action, which says it all. This is a wonderful opportunity to participate in a ministry of reconciliation by moving yourself and others closer to glorifying God. The team will be led by Jon Nelson, who went to Haiti in February 2011 and April 2012. For more information, please contact Jon at 512-288-2764 or by email at [email protected].

The Robertson Blood Center DriveDonate Blood Directly To Our Troops

The Robertson Blood Center from Fort Hood is part of the Armed Services Blood Program (ASBP). The ASBP provides do-nated blood products to military hospitals, ships, combat support hospitals and medics on the front line. However, blood that is sent

to Afghanistan for our troops (and was sent to Iraq) comes exclusively from the Robertson Blood Care Center at Fort Hood. It is sent within 24 hours, and arrives for our troops in about 4 days. The Robertson Blood Center operates as part of the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center to provide quality blood services in support of global medical readiness during peacetime and combat operations. The Robertson Blood Center Drive will take place at the V.A. Outpatient Clinic, 2901 Montopolis Drive, Austin, room 210, on Friday, December 14, from 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Appointments are required at www.militarydonor.com. Donors need to have a photo I.D. with them, a list of all foreign travel since 1980, and medications and immunizations taken in the past four weeks. Thank you for your support of the Robertson Blood Center. Many soldiers, family members, and retirees in military hospitals will be saved from needless suffering through the miracle of blood transfusion. Go to the link: http://www.militaryblood.dod.mil/fthood for more information on ASBP, and to http://www.centraltexas.va.gov/visitors/austin.asp for directions and information on the VA Outpatient Clinic. If anyone would like to donate and does not have transportation,Steve and Anne Muzos would be glad to give rides to the VA Outpatient Clinic. Contact Anne at [email protected].

A Birthday Spent Giving Back11/19/2012 By Catherine Tharpe, ASBP Blood Donor Recruiter, Fort Hood, Texas

Anne Muzos spent her birthday a little differently this year. Instead of a cake and receiving gifts, Muzos spent her birthday at the Robertson Blood Center giving the gift of donated blood to a service member. This was her first donation to the military blood program, but for Muzos it is the start of an annual tradition stemming from a long-time altruistic outlook and a personal story. The long commute from Austin to Fort Hood, Texas, would deter most from donating at the Robertson Blood Center but to Anne Muzos, it is the least she can do to help out. “Donating blood to the military is important. They are there for us, protecting us, taking care of us,” she said. “It takes so little effort for us to give in comparison to them—who put their lives on the line. I get to drive an hour in the comfort of my own car, donate in less than an hour, and then enjoy juice and cookies in an air conditioned environment. For all those reasons, I have to give blood.” Her selfless donations are also inspired by a personal reason—medi-cally retired Sgt. Rob Laurent, who is married to Muzos’ daughter, Briley. On Dec. 24, 2004, Muzos received a call at her Austin residence at 6:30 a.m., from a military official asking to speak to her daughter. During the phone call, they found out that he had been injured by a roadside bomb. Sgt. Laurent was given immediate treatment at a facility in Iraq. He then received multiple blood transfusions and surgeries starting at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany, then the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C., ending at Brooke Army

OHUMC members Anne and Steve Muzos smile after giving blood at

Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas. He continued with long-term physical therapy and would eventually medically retire from the U.S. Army. Sgt. Laurent continued with his civilian education, eventually completing a master program at the University of Kansas. He and his wife live in Fort Lee, Va., where he works for the government as a civilian. Anne and Steve Muzos plan to continue their brand new tradition of donating blood on her birthday. Their story is a reminder that the need for blood is constant and donors help the Armed Services Blood Program pro-vide blood products where ever and whenever a service member may need them. Help The Food MinistryOur food ministry is such a vital part of our outreach to our congregation as well as to our neighbors in need and we are in need of help-ers for funeral receptions and Agape meals. Sue Payne, [email protected].

BRIDGING HEARTSWarm Scarves Needed

We are a drop off spot! On December 7, OHUMC will be handing over a couple of huge bags of fleece scarves for children in Nuevo Laredo who have no heat in the winter. Peggy Gerke from Bridging Hearts will come pick them up and we may have others drop off here as well. You still have time for a scarf-making party- just cut and fringe strips of fleece. Thank you in advance for making this Christmas Dream come true. Go to www.bridginghope.org for more information.

Scarves needed (by December 7): • All colors and All sizes - just cut and fringe and repeat! (Fleece is 50% off at JoAnn’s Fabric, Hobby Lobby, Walmart... JoAnn’s Fabric gives an extra 15% off for Teachers)• Scarves for youth (6” by 36”)• Scarves for adults (8” by 45/46”)• Babies (small tie blankets)

Please deliver donations to Becca Hemenway in the Children’s Bldg. or drop off donations in the church office.

Thank you to Oak Hill UMC for everything the members did for my son’s funeral. I especially would like to thank Pastor Pam for her love and concern, I appreciate all the time you spent with me and my son, and being with me throughout. Anne Knight

Thank you very much for all of the kindness and support given to us in connection with the recent

death of my mom. Especially with her dete-riorating quality of life these past 2+ years, due to multiple health issues, we know she is in a much better place now, reunited with family and friends. We consider ourselves very fortunate for the comfort we received from our OHUMC family. Thank you, Kelly Latz

Men’s Walk #1690 is February 7, 2013 at Camp Young Judaea in Wimberly and would be a wonderful Christmas present

for a man in your family, a friend or yourself. Ask someone who has been on a Walk or George & Jan Kennebeck at

263-5701. Merry Christmas to all!!

I’d like to thank the congregation for all the love, support and hospitality shown through-out our ordeal and John’s services. I SO ap-preciate all you have done to help us through this terrible time. Bless you, Val Sansing
