2012 STRATEGIC GOALS

• Strengthen our comprehensive programming to increase Cornerstone’s capacity and outreach.

• Demonstrate the quality of our organization’s performance through evaluation.

• Strengthen Cornerstone’s operational capacity.• Create social change that cultivates a non-violent community.

Dear Friends,

As we begin our 30th year, we can look back on what we have accomplished and all that has changed in the last three decades and feel proud. During the course of this journey we have moved four times, each move has facilitated growth and innovation. As we grew and changed so did the communities we serve. The denial of the 1980’s has been replaced by partnerships with local law enforcement, the judicial system and our school districts. The success of our Suburban Hennepin County Blueprint for Safety Project resulted in the expansion of our geographic footprint in 2012. Our target cities now include Brooklyn Park, Bloomington, Eden Prairie, Edina, Richfield, and St Louis Park.

The need for accessible, comprehensible services for victims of domestic violence, their children, their families and their friends is at an all-time high. We saw a 25% increase in the number of unduplicated individuals accessing our services last year and we fully expect that trend to continue in 2013 and beyond. Cornerstone strives to find new and effective ways to meet the unique needs of women, men and children victimized by domestic violence.

Cornerstone continues to demonstrate high ethical standards, both programmatically and administratively. Our strategic goals reflect our mission and vision for the future. We value the community partnerships that strengthen the agency and benefit our clients. Thank you to our donors and volunteers for your support and to our Board of Director for their guidance.

PAVE - Preventing Abuse and Violence through Education is a unique school-based violence prevention program combining classroom education with individual and group counseling. PAVE works with students K-12 contending with family or dating violence, harassment, bullying, and anger — serving both the victim

and the perpetrator. PAVE staff members develop and utilize curricula addressing gender issues, healthy relationships, and anger issues.

411 students with counseling from PAVE staff Over 9,100 students with education on topics such as healthy relationships,

anger management & bullying.

The new Pave the Way Project website launched in 2012 to promote the awareness and prevention of teen dating violence by harnessing the musical talents of teens by offering a collection of music produced by teens for teens about health and unhealthy relationships.

This project was a collaboration between Cornerstone, Verizon Wireless and McFarland

Thompson Entertainment. Pavethewayproject.com is also an educational website offering tools and resources for teens, teachers, parents, friends and more!

Promoting Healthy Relationships and Empowering Youth through Pop Music

T.I.E. CampaignDuring the month of February, dating violence awareness month,

our local community high schools come together to support Cornerstone’s T.I.E. Campaign

(Taking Initiative Everyday to end dating violence) As a symbol of support, students and athletes wear purple shoelaces for

the month. In 2012, over 330 students participated and over 1,000 signed petitions pledging to “take initiative every day to end

dating violence in their schools”.

Every year for the holidays, Cornerstone sets up “Santa Shop.” Stocked with goodies, Santa Shop gives kids from abusive homes the opportunity to shop for holiday gifts for their parents and siblings. They get to experience the joy

of giving by picking out and wrapping presents for their family.

During the 3 days of Santa Shop: 400 children attended

85 volunteers helped out 12 volunteer groups decorated and cleaned up after the event

59 gift drop off sites at local businesses and organizations

AND over 80 families were “adopted” through our Adopt-a-Family program for the holidays!

Celebrated 20 years of Santa Shop!

CORE Program Blueprint for Safety

Blueprint ProjectAs a result of our South Suburban Blueprint Project and Cornerstone’s reputation within the

county’s criminal justice community, we were asked to provide services to the City of Brooklyn Park. We agreed, which resulted in an expanded geographic footprint in March of 2012. The

Blueprint for Safety Project expanded to include a total of ten Hennepin County suburban law enforcement agencies and their City Prosecutors along with the County Attorney’s Office and

the County Sheriff’s Department. The purpose is to improve the sytem’s response to domestic assault and to prevent domestic homicide.

Cornerstone’s Annual Conference 2012 on Domestic Violence and Abuse featured Dr. Ludy Green from Washington D.C. as our opening keynote, speaking on

Domestic Violence in the Workplace and closed with a moving and powerful presentation by survivor Teri Jendusa Nicolai, who narrowly escaped death at the hands of her abusive

ex-husband. There were close to 200 attendees and 12 workshops offered over the course of the 2-day conference on topics as varied as Exploring the Link Between Animal Abuse, Child Abuse,

and Domestic Violence, Abuse in Later Life, and The Impact of Pornography on Children and Youth, and featured, among others, local experts Dr. Jeff Edelson

and Cordelia Anderson.

60 volunteers helped renovate our transitional housing apartment creating a warm and welcoming new home for 8 families. The volunteers also funded and provided a new play set,

sandbox and toys for the children in the apartments.

DAY ONE® MINNESOTAVOLUNTEERS

To learn more about Day One® and our network partners, please visit www.dayoneservices.orgTo keep informed join us at facebook.com/dayonemn

In 2012, 950 volunteers gave 12,500 hours of their time and talents to Cornerstone’s mission.

We had 92 volunteer groups from various churches, corporations, local businesses and civic organizations

Approximately 2500 meals were donated, prepared and served by volunteers to our residents.

Volunteers are at the heart of Cornerstone. They strengthen, support, and expand the services we provide to victims of domestic abuse and their

children. Our work would not be possible without their generosity.

Cornerstone is so grateful for all the community support we receive each month. Local churches, businesses, civic organizations and corporations have given to Cornerstone in

many generous ways. We would not be able to operate without our community embracing the work that we do.

Immediate access to services and safety is vital in saving the lives of persons experiencing interpersonal violence. This is why Day One®, Cornerstone’s statewide program, continues to be such a crucial link between survivors and victim services. Day One® Minnesota provides a unique framework supporting 60 domestic violence, sexual assault, anti-trafficking and general crime organizations. Advocates throughout the state, utilizing our web based site of “real time” bed space and services, assisted over 2,000 victims and their children in finding safety in one call. Over 375 victims, relocating to safe locations in other areas of the state, were provided confidential transportation services.

In 2012, through Day One’s administered Minnesota Domestic Violence Crisis Line, nearly 12,000 victims, family, and friends were directly connected to a network partner program in their area. 24 hours a day, callers received advocacy, support, information and, if requested, safety. Day One® helps to ensure that all victims receive these services by contracting with interpreters and provided over 530 limited English speaking callers’ access to the crisis line in 2012.

Day One® is committed to enhancing access to safety for all survivors of interpersonal violence. To accomplish this, we continue to forge active partnerships on local, national, and international levels creating multiple safe access points for those seeking services. Our unique partnership iniatives include: Opening the Door: A social justice collective of 19 agencies, community members and survivors working to improve access to safety and services for marginalized and underserved populations.

Minnesota Alliance for Family and Animal Safety: A community alliance devoted to addressing the link between animal abuse/neglect and family violence through education, advocacy, social policy and program development.

Anti-trafficking Collaboration: Anti-trafficking, domestic violence and sexual assault programs and coalitions working together to develop training for victim services programs, enhancing the MN DV Crisis Line to provide access for trafficking victims and upgrading the Day One® web-based site to provide additional service information.

Abuse in Later Life: Collaborating with victim service providers and community partners to provide awareness, trainings and direct services for those 50 and older experiencing interpersonal violence from a partner, relative or trusted caregiver.

National Day One®, WashingtonDay One® has long envisioned bringing our model of services to programs throughout the United States, creating a safety net across the country. In 2008, we formed National Day One®, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cornerstone. Together with domestic violence and human service leaders from the City of Seattle and surrounding counties, we launched our first national expansion initiative. The Day One® Washington program has grown to a network of 22 domestic violence programs working together to streamline access to services for victims in their region.
