VISION STATEMENT

We are the Church of the Redeemer, United Church of Christ,

an inclusive community committed to the worship of God, the work of justice,

and the recognition of our common humanity in the struggles of life.

We follow Jesus Christ, who welcomes all people to his table.

We celebrate the rich diversity of God’s people:

in race, gender, age, sexual orientation, physical and mental abilities,

marital and economic status and culture.

Join us on a journey of the Holy Spirit,

where faith and intellect meet, learning never ends,

and music and the arts draw us closer to our Creator.

WELCOME

We are pleased that you could join us this morning; wherever you are on your life

and faith journey, you are welcome at the Church of the Redeemer. If you have

any questions, please speak with an usher at the back of the Sanctuary. If you

would like more information about the church, fill out the visitor information form at

the back of this bulletin and put it in an offering plate. We hope you will join us after

the service at Coffee Hour for a time of fellowship – go out the side door and follow

the crowds.

ABOUT US

The Church of the Redeemer is an open and affirming, theologically progressive,

mainline Protestant church affiliated with the United Church of Christ (UCC). It was

founded as a Congregational church in New Haven in 1838. Our identity is

summarized by our vision statement.

CHILDCARE DURING AND AFTER CHURCH

Children are always welcome in church. Activity bags for older children and

rocking chairs for adults with babies are available at the rear of the sanctuary. We

have a nursery downstairs for children through age 6; you can take your child there

at any time (follow the "Nursery" signs in the Tower Lobby or ask the ushers at the

back).

LARGE PRINT BULLETINS AND ASSISTIVE LISTENING DEVICES

If you are having trouble reading this bulletin or hearing the

service, the ushers can provide you with a large-print bulletin or

an assistive listening device.

MOMENT FOR SILENT REFLECTION

PRAYERS (composed by the Confirmation Class)

All: O Lord, there is no other all-knowing and almighty being like you. We

confess that we have not always believed in you ways or works of the faithful

community. We have created chaos and sin. Forgive us. We thank you for

sustaining us all year, 24/7. We pray for healing from illness or injury. we

acknowledge all the good you have done for us. Knowing that you are

watching over us, we try to return this love. Hallelujah, hallelujah! We shout

of grace, and we praise you always. In Jesus' name, and in Jesus' words we

pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will

be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us

our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into

temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and

the glory, forever. Amen.

OFFERTORY

OFFERTORY ANTHEM Lauridsen Veni, Sancte Spiritus

Come, Holy Spirit,

Send forth from heaven

the ray of thy light

Come, Father of the poor

Come, giver of gifts

Come, light of hearts.

Thou best of consolers,

Sweet guest of the soul

Sweet refreshment.

In labor, thou art rest,

In heat, the tempering,

In grief, the consolation.

O light most blessed,

fill the inmost heart

of all thy faithful

without your grace,

there is nothing in us,

Nothing that is not harmful.

Cleanse what is sordid,

Moisten what is arid,

Heal what is hurt

Flex what is rigid

fire what is frigid

Correct what goes astray.

Grant to thy faithful,

those trusting in thee,

Thy sacred seven-fold gifts

Grant the reward of virtue

Grant the deliverance of salvation

Grant everlasting joy.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITMENT

PRAYER OF THE CONGREGATION

Wondrous God, by their baptisms these your servants were made one with us in

the body of Christ. Today we rejoice in their journey of faith which has brought

them to this time and place. We commit to them our love, support and care as

their life and faith journeys continue. May your Spirit continue to move through

them and all of us as we serve you and your children everywhere. In Christ's name

we pray, Amen.

PASSING OF THE PEACE

Let us welcome one another with the traditional Christian greeting

“Peace be with you." "And also with you."

RECESSIONAL HYMN please stand As we run this race

(Tune: New Dimensions, #391, New Century Hymnal)

We have come with great excitement; we have come with doubts and fears;

Coming to confirm the promise made for us in younger years.

Now we boldly stand before you, God of power, God of grace.

Give us strength and give us vision, joy and hope and love and courage, as we run

this race.

We have learned and we have practiced, striving hard to understand.

All our questions yet unanswered, God we place into your hands.

Now we boldly stand before you, God of power, God of grace.

Give us strength and give us vision, joy and hope and love and courage, as we run

this race.

Called to ministries of healing, called to bold prophetic deeds,

Called to love both saints and sinners, called to serve and called to lead.

Now we boldly stand before you, God of power, God of grace.

Give us strength and give us vision, joy and hope and love and courage, as we run

this race.

Not alone you send us onward, not alone we bear our load.

Clouds of witnesses surround us; Spirit-led we walk this road.

Now we boldly stand before you, God of power, God of grace.

Give us strength and give us vision, joy and hope and love and courage, as we run

this race.

Gladly, then, we raise our voices, full of faith to meet this day,

Trusting that with you beside us, all our fears will fall away.

Now we boldly stand before you, God of power, God of grace.

Give us strength and give us vision, joy and hope and love and courage as we run

this race.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

THIS WEDNESDAY, MAY 25: "BEING MORTAL" POTLUCK AND PROGRAM

Being Mortal is both a book by Atul Gawande and documentary from PBS based

on it. The topic is a critical one: how we deal with serious and terminal illnesses and

the process of aging and dying in our families and communities today. A potluck

at 5:30 will precede the screening of the film at 6:00 with discussion to follow.

SUNDAY, MAY 29: PROPHETS AND LOSS: THE KING DAVID STORY

Prophets and Loss: the King David Story will be retold and performed by Tom Lee,

followed by a talk back and wine and cheeses reception, on Sunday, May 29 at 2

pm at United Church Parish House, 323 Temple Street. For more information see the

community events bulletin board or the May edition of Redeemer News. All are

welcome.

CALL FOR MUSICAL VOLUNTEERS

If you would like to sing or play during worship this summer, please sign up on the

bulletin board in the Tower Lobby. Two pieces of music will be needed: one for the

anthem and one for the offertory, but if you can only supply one, that's ok too.

Larry can fill in if necessary.

KNITTING GROUP The Knitting Group meets every third Thursday of the month at 2:30 in the afternoon

in the Sterling Room. Our next meeting is this Thursday, June 16. Please join us for

this vital ministry of creating prayer shawls for those who need comfort in difficult

times. The pattern is very simple, and we will teach the stitches to anyone who joins

us. We also can supply the yarn.

FLOWER DONATIONS

A flower chart for donating arrangements for Sunday worship services is posted in

the Tower Lobby. Please sign up to donate flowers in honor or in memory of loved

ones and friends. The cost of an arrangement is $50.00. Barbara will contact you

the week before to remind you and to get information regarding wording for that

Sunday's bulletin as well as any special requests for colors or seasonal flowers. You

may also provide flowers yourself, but please notify the office.

FRONTLINE follows renowned writer and surgeon, Atul Gawande, as he explores the relationships between doctors and patients who are nearing the end of life. Along with Gawande's book, Being Mortal, the film challenges us to reexamine how we think about death and dying. The film investigates the practice of caring for the dying, reports on the burgeoning field of palliative care and explores ways patients can live their lives fully, all the way to the very end.

A discussion immediately following the film will include perspectives from medical, ethical, legal and long-term care professionals.
