VISION STATEMENT

We are the Church of the Redeemer, United Church of Christ,

an inclusive community committed to the worship of God, the work of justice,

and the recognition of our common humanity in the struggles of life.

We follow Jesus Christ, who welcomes all people to his table.

We celebrate the rich diversity of God’s people:

in race, gender, age, sexual orientation, physical and mental abilities,

marital and economic status and culture.

Join us on a journey of the Holy Spirit,

where faith and intellect meet, learning never ends,

and music and the arts draw us closer to our Creator.

WELCOME

We are pleased that you could join us this morning; wherever you are on your life

and faith journey, you are welcome at the Church of the Redeemer. If you have

any questions, please speak with an usher at the back of the Sanctuary. If you

would like more information about the church, fill out the visitor information form at

the back of this bulletin and put it in an offering plate. We hope you will join us after

the service at Coffee Hour for a time of fellowship – go out the side door and follow

the crowds.

ABOUT US

The Church of the Redeemer is an open and affirming, theologically progressive,

mainline Protestant church affiliated with the United Church of Christ (UCC). It was

founded as a Congregational church in New Haven in 1838. Our identity is

summarized by our vision statement.

CHILDCARE DURING AND AFTER CHURCH

Children are always welcome in church. Activity bags for older children and

rocking chairs for adults with babies are available at the rear of the sanctuary. We

have a nursery downstairs for children through age 6; you can take your child there

at any time (follow the "Nursery" signs in the Tower Lobby or ask the ushers at the

back).

LARGE PRINT BULLETINS AND ASSISTIVE LISTENING DEVICES

If you are having trouble reading this bulletin or hearing the

service, the ushers can provide you with a large-print bulletin or

an assistive listening device.

ADVENT WREATH: LIGHTING OF THE CANDLE OF JOY Caryne Eskridge

Today is the third Sunday of Advent in which we celebrate the joy God gives the

world in Jesus. We re-light the candles of hope and peace and add the light of

joy.

From the prophet Isaiah, “You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the

mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and

all the trees of the field will clap their hands.”

(Isaiah 55:12)

Personal testimony of joy

People: Father, we are filled with joy because we have hope and peace that

you have sent your son for all that believe. Help us to be the joyful

voices that proclaim grace and truth. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.

ANTHEM Elizabeth Poston Jesus Christ the Apple Tree

Sarah Reed, soprano; Julia Blue Raspe, mezzo-soprano

Paul Berry, tenor; Brian Robinson, bass

The tree of life my soul hath seen, laden with fruit and always green:

the trees of nature fruitless be compared with Christ the apple tree.

His beauty doth all things excel: by faith I know, but ne’er can tell

The glory which I now can see in Jesus Christ the apple tree.

For happiness I long have sought, and pleasure dearly I have bought:

I missed of all; but now I see ‘tis found in Christ the apple tree.

I’m weary with my former toil, here I will sit and rest a while:

under the shadow I will be of Jesus Christ the apple tree.

This fruit doth make my soul to thrive, it keeps my dying faith alive;

Which makes my soul in haste to be with Jesus Christ the apple tree.

PRAYERS AND SILENT MEDITATION

THE LORD'S PRAYER unison

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will

be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us

our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into

OFFERTORY

OFFERTORY ANTHEM Gustav Holst Let all mortal flesh keep silence

Sarah Reed, soprano

Brian Robinson, bass

Let all mortal flesh keep silence and with fear and trembling stand;

ponder nothing earthly minded for with blessing in his hand

Christ our Lord descendeth, our full homage to demand.

King of kings yet born of Mary, as of old on earth he stood,

Lord of lords, in human vesture, in the body and the blood

he will give to all the faithful, his own self for heavenly food.

Rank on rank the host of heaven spreads its vanguard on the way

as the light of light descendeth from the realms of endless day;

that the powers of hell may vanish as the darkness clears away.

At his feet the six-winged seraph; cherubim with sleepless eye,

veil their faces to the presence, as with ceaseless voice they cry,

Alleluia, Lord most high. Amen.

CONGREGATIONAL DOXOLOGY (Tune: Lasst uns erfreuen)

Let all things their Creator bless,

And worship God in humbleness:

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Praise God and Jesus Christ the Son,

And Holy Spirit, Three in One:

O Praise God, O Praise God.

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

YOUTH GROUP CHRISTMAS PARTY TODAY

DOCUMENTARY TO BE SHOWN DECEMBER 19

Over the past several years, a documentary company, Purple States, negotiated

with the Connecticut Department of Correction to produce a documentary about

people returning from prison. Several people returning to their communities were

given cameras to record their encounters and were also filmed by Purple States

professionals.

Purple States coordinated its efforts with the Public Broadcasting System and the

New York Times. The documentary was shown on Frontline (a PBS program) in July

and the New York Times produced several accompanying articles in the

newspaper and clips on line.

On Tuesday, December 19, 2017, at 6 pm, the documentary will be shown at the

downtown New Haven Library followed by conversation with the producer, former

parolees and criminal justice professionals.
