5 From the Pastor
My Fellow Advent Pilgrims, Ever been in a pickle? Has it happened to you that you faced a situation and you didn’t know what to do? Then you’re in good company! St. Joseph faced a vexing moment and he didn’t quite know what to do. He’s in an impossible bind. He’s publicly committed to Mary, but they were not yet formally married. Now she’s preg-nant and he knows he didn’t do it. Joseph’s angst becomes clearer as we realize the dilemma he faces. If Joseph says nothing, he admits to an illicit sexual relation, which carried with it a sever social stigma. If he denies responsibility for the child, he risks exposing Mary to shame and even capital punishment, as mentioned in Deuteronomy. As a right-eous man, he didn’t want to disregard God’s laws. But as a compassionate man, he didn’t want to humiliate and dis-grace Mary. Discerning God’s will in light of what his heart believed and his religion required must have been agoniz-ing. What to do? He saw no easy way out. So he makes an initial decision to exit out the back door divorcing Mary quietly. While we don’t know the details of Joseph’s inner struggle, we do know that when he goes to bed that night, he keeps his heart open. That’s good advice for us! In his sleep God eventually shows him that he has more options than imme-diately appear. Like Joseph, we can find ourselves struggling with decisions where we do not always understand what is happening or how to decide when there seems to be no good options. But when we have a spirit of humility and trust, God finds a way to get through to us: sometimes through a friend or family member, or maybe an event, or as with Joseph, with a dream. When we’re faced with difficult choices, ask God’s Spirit for wisdom. Ask that we make our decisions in line with God’s heart. I’m a firm believer that God often speaks to us in our gut, our conscience, our soul - call it what you will. As Christmas arrives this week, this holy day can be a real celebration in our souls if our souls are open to God. God doesn’t want our stuff, our things. He just wants an open heart. What a great gift to give! Fr. Brian

Maintenance and Improvement Projects
In an effort to keep our parishioners well informed, we are making a report of necessary projects that we would like to complete when funding becomes available. We believe it is important to be transparent and specific when requesting our church family to make financial contributions. Below is a list of various maintenance and improvement projects that we hope to achieve, and we hope that this “wish list” will give our parishioners a clearer idea of the future pathways in which your finan-cial support will be used.

GOSPEL MEDITATION
4th Sunday of Advent December 22, 2019
Each Advent season, we prepare to welcome Jesus into the inns and stables of our hearts. But Jesus’ coming wasn’t welcomed by everyone with choirs of angels. For St. Joseph, the first coming of Jesus was a bit more complicated. “When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit.” For Joseph, opening his heart (and home) to Jesus meant, at best, appearing to all the world like a man who had impreg-nated his wife out of wedlock. At worst, he appeared a cuckold, raising the child of another man. God doesn’t always appear the way we expect. For some of us, the birth of Christ is a bit relationally complicated. Perhaps over the past few months, a loved one has died. This Christmas, you’re taking it upon yourself to keep up the traditions and hold the family together. Welcoming Jesus means welcoming grief. Perhaps it’s a difficult relative (or two or three) and it’s all you can do to bite your tongue and swallow your pride while they’re under your roof. Welcoming Jesus means welcoming strife, discord, and tension. Yet “do not be afraid,” the angel says. Do not be afraid. Why? Because we celebrate the birth of “Emmanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’” Before Jesus’ earthly ministry would begin, Jesus would lose his father, Joseph. God is with us in our grief. Wherever Jesus went, he stirred up controversy and faced down challenging personalities. God is with us in our stress. The trick is, like Joseph, to allow supernatural grace to prevail. Joseph was a good man, filled with natural virtue in that he didn’t want to “expose [Mary] to shame.” Yet he was prepared to “divorce her quietly” all the same. Our natural abilities only take us so far. Where is receiving Jesus complicated this Christmas season? Are you relying on your own strength to get you through, or are you truly ready to accept the grace of Emmanuel, God with us?
