Hidden Poverty in Stark County United Way of Greater Stark County’s latest research reveals that 38% of Greater Stark County households cannot afford basic life necessities, including housing, food, transportation, child care and health care. United Way uses the term ALICE to describe this hidden population: Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed.According to federal poverty level guidelines, 18,207 households in Greater Stark County live in poverty, but this report exposes a greater need—an additional 39,449 households in our community are unable to make ends meet, despite maintaining employment. “The truth is we all know ALICE,” said United Way of Greater Stark County President and CEO Maria Heege. “ALICE is your neighbor. Your office clerk. Your waitress. And these people in our community need our help.”In September, the organization launched its annual campaign. Donations stay in the community to fund local services and programs that help improve the health, education, and financial stability of ALICE, such as the United Way 2-1-1 helpline, the Emergency Assistance Collaborative, Access Health Stark County, the Alliance for Children and Family Services and the YMCA of Central Stark County. “ALICE has far broader community consequences than many people realize,” said Heege. “When these individuals skip preventative health care visits, forgo car insurance or receive substandard child care, we all feel the impact, whether it’s through higher insurance premiums or taxes. We all have a stake in improving the conditions for ALICE, but we can’t do it alone. We need the support of businesses and individuals in our community.”

Surprising Free Lynda.com Benefits through Massillon Public Library —Jessica WatkinsAdult Services ManagerMassillon Public LibraryLynda.com has been a provider of online learning for more than 20 years, and until recently, the only way to access its 12,000+ courses was to buy an expensive individual subscription. However, Lynda.com was recently acquired by LinkedIn, and thanks to a partnership between LinkedIn and OPLIN, this content is now free to all Ohio library cardholders who access the database through their library’s website. Most of the Lynda.com course offerings are business- and technology- related, but I was shocked at how many unexpected skills I could learn here, too! There are courses to help patrons become better creative writers, improve their photography, build a personal brand, learn to write music, and almost any other hard or soft skill you can imagine. I recently completed a course on developing a leadership philosophy, and it was surprisingly helpful. It was broken down into three- to five-minute videos that were easy to fit into my busy schedule, and at the end, I was given the option to post a certificate of completion to LinkedIn or other social media. massillonlibrary.org

A Message from the Chamber PresidentTed Herncane As we approach the end of 2018, we hope that you all join us for the final Chamber event of the year—the Annual Holiday “Let’s Do Lunch” on Wednesday, December 12, at Mercy Health Center of Jackson. This annual event is a great way to spend time with your fellow Chamber members during the holiday season.Gary Feagles’ term as board chairman ends December 31, and we cannot thank him enough for his service and leadership over the last two years. During his tenure as board chair, Gary guided the Chamber to its permanent office in the First North Building, was instrumental in starting and growing the Chamber Foundation, and his leadership in 2017 when I became executive director of MDF was extremely beneficial to all involved. Dave Waikem, Waikem Auto Family, will become board chairman on January 1, and we look forward

to working with Dave for the next year. We also welcome Jacquie Knight, Stark Glass Enterprises, as incoming board chairperson for 2019.Unfortunately with new additions come departures. This year, MCTV’s Nancy Gessner ends her term on the Chamber Board, and we will miss her wisdom and leadership on the board. Nancy served as board chairperson in 2015 and 2016, and her guidance during those years is a reason for the Chamber’s success today. We welcome Katherine Gessner, MCTV, to the board beginning January 1. Happy holidays and see you at Mercy Health Center of Jackson on December 12!

MCTV to Expand Service AreaMCTV, a leading Internet, TV, and Phone provider in Stark, Wayne, Summit, Holmes, Tuscarawas, Jefferson and Columbiana counties, plans to expand services to the Woodsfield, Ohio area. MCTV currently offers residential and business services to nearly 80,000 homes and businesses. The Woodsfield system serves the villages of Woodsfield, Lewisville and surrounding townships in Monroe County. Woodsfield Village Council approved an agreement at a special meeting on October 29 to sell the assets of the village-run system to MCTV. “MCTV is excited for the opportunity to grow, not only in our footprint but also expanding to new communities,” stated Bob Gessner, president of MCTV. “We have experience in successfully managing Internet and TV networks in small to midsize communities. Woodsfield and the surrounding area are a great match for our expertise and I am confident bringing this system into the MCTV family will help provide the residents with high- quality service.”Since 1965, MCTV’s 165+ local employees have been serving their neighbors with a full complement of advanced broadband products for home and business, including high-speed Internet, digital TV, phone, television advertising, dedicated fiber optic connections and security systems.
