Alsomany local legislators, commissioners, and other countywide candidates will have contested primaries. Additionally, the Cityof Massillon has an income tax issue onthe ballot. I encourage everyone to getout and VOTE and let YOUR VOICE beheard! Remember, as we found out inFlorida in 2000, every vote counts. So,remember to vote on March 15, either in person or by absentee ballot. It is your constitutional right and responsibility!

The First North Building:Future Home of the Massillon WestStark Chamber of CommerceIn order for the Massillon community to remain competitive in terms of business attractionand retention, it must offer a diverse portfolio of available industrial and commercial properties. In my office I keep a large folder of these properties currently for sale or lease,so when calls come in to the Chamber requesting information, it is readily available. Onespecific area where Massillon could improve is the availability of Grade A, top-of-the lineoffice space necessary for attracting professional services and other office-specific jobs totown—and to the downtown business district specifically. Fortunately for Massillon, a localbusinessman has taken the initiative to help address this problem. With an anticipatedcompletion date of spring/summer 2017, we eagerly look forward to Massillonʼs newestmodern office complex: the First North Building.Over the last few years, MCTV President Bob Gessner and I have had several conversations about the lack of quality office space in the downtown area. As a MassillonDevelopment Foundation (MDF) board member and local business owner, Bob clearly has an interest in seeing Massillon thrive economically and otherwise. This year he will undertake a project that will satisfy a great economic development need by building a two-story, 20,000-square-foot multi-use office building on the corner of First Street Northeastand North Avenue Northeast—the vacant lot immediately east of the newly remodeled A.A. Hammersmith Insurance Agency office. Construction will commence this spring.Last year, the Massillon WestStark Chamber of Commerce and Massillon DevelopmentFoundation sold our existing office building located at 137 Lincoln Way East to theMassillon Museum for their future needs. Once completed, the Chamber and MDF willrelocate to the First North Building and we are proud to be the first tenant in this significantand much-needed development. This project serves two immediate community needs: (1)improves Massillonʼs position in attracting new professional services and office-specificbusinesses, and (2) provides needed reinvestment in an important part of the downtownbusiness district. As the renderings by John Patrick Picard Architect Inc. show, the building was designed tocapture the spirit of Massillon's history by making it reminiscent of the brick factories thatused to house Massillonʼs manufacturing companies. Inside will be a thoroughly modernbuilding designed to include a variety of office suites. When companies look for officespace, they often have a certain layout or size in mind. The challenge then is to play thematch game—matching the companyʼs office needs to those properties currently available.Sometimes a suitable space just does not exist in Massillon. Then the company begins tolook elsewhere. The First North Building solves that dilemma because the interior spacecan be built to suit the needs of a prospective tenant, small or large. While the Chamber certainly looks forward to being a tenant in the First North Buildingcome 2017, the entire Massillon community should be eager for its opening too. This modern office complex is a sign of continued resurgence in the city and an opportunity to further expand a growing, diverse local economy that benefits our entire region. The TV ads from the Alliance forEnergy Choice (Dynegy is one ofthe main members of this group)attacking FirstEnergyʼs ElectricSecurity Plan are an attempt tocloud an issue that is important to Ohioʼs energy future. And it is not a surprise that many ofthose leading the charge againstFirstEnergy are from out-of-stateor have a self-serving motivation. Our plan is in the best interest of Ohioans because it provideslong-term protection against higher electric rates in the future.Opponents of the plan are beingshort-sighted because they onlyare concerned with near-termrate impacts. The PUCO staff;Ohio Partners for AffordableEnergy, a low-income customeradvocacy group; and EnerNOC,

an energy management services provider; along with 13 other signatories, support our efforts. While weʼre well aware that there may be some minor rate increases in the initial years,we believe FirstEnergyʼs approach will stabilize generation costs over the long run andshield customers from much bigger rate increases down the road. Unlike other electric suppliers that rely on one fuel source, FirstEnergyʼs plan providesan insurance policy for customers by keeping a diverse set of fuel sources available inOhio to generate electricity. This strategy reduces the risk of more Ohio plant closures,or building costly transmission to import out-of-state energy sources that put our state at risk of higher electric prices in the years ahead. Overall, the agreement preserves $1 billion in annual statewide economic benefits, including tax revenues and an estimated 3,000 direct and indirect jobs created by operations at Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station in Oak Harbor, Ohio, and the W.H. Sammis Plant in Stratton, Ohio. The settlement also provides more than $102 million to help low-income customers withbill payment and energy efficiency programs, along with economic development fundingfor Ohio communities. We truly believe our plan will help safeguard Ohioʼs energy future. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions: [email protected].

A Healthy Colon in Five Easy Steps Article submitted by Affinity Medical Center

Men and women approaching age 50 often cringe when their doctor tells them it is almost time to schedule a screening colonoscopy. But regular screening is the key to preventing and detecting possible colon cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, excluding skin cancers, colon cancer is the third most common form of cancer, and, caught early, it’s one of the most curable. This is why it is important to know the symptoms and practice prevention methods to keep your colon healthy. Colon cancer is cancer of the large intestine, which is the lower part of the digestive system. Typically, it begins as a slow-growing, small growth called a polyp. It is because most cases begin silently and cause few symptoms that regular screening is so important. There are five easy steps that you can take to help prevent colon cancer and protect your health.

1. Schedule regular screenings All adults over the age of 50 should begin regular colon cancer screenings. With routine screenings, colon cancer can be found early, when treatment is most effective. A colonoscopy is a painless, 30- to 60-minute, procedure that can potentially save your life. These tests look for evidence of actual cancer, and precancerous growths known as polyps. A colonoscopy can do more that detect cancer. It can actually help prevent it by removing polyps before they become cancerous.

2. Know the risk Knowing the risk associated with colon health issues is important in prevention. These risks include:

Advancing age, over age 50 A high fat diet Being overweight or obese A family history of polyp growths in the colon and rectum Type 2 diabetes Smoking and alcohol consumption

People who have had colon cancer are at an increased risk of developing it again, so it is important to continue to schedule routine screenings.

3. Know the symptoms Along with routine scheduled screenings, being aware of the warning signs of colon cancer can potentially save your life. If you notice certain symptoms, you should see your doctor sooner.

Symptoms may include persistent stomach discomfort, a change in bowel habits (diarrhea, constipation, or a change in stool consistency), abdominal pain accompanying a bowel movement, dark stools, weakness or fatigue, unexplained weight loss, or blood in the stool (either very bright red or very dark). While symptoms vary, and certain foods and medications can mimic these symptoms, it is always smart to err on the side of safety.

4. Practice prevention By choosing a healthy lifestyle, being physically active and maintaining a balanced diet, you will reduce your risk of developing colon cancer. You should include moderate-intensity exercise – at least 30 minutes most days of the week - which helps to build your body’s defenses. This will also help you to maintain a healthy weight and stay stress-free. If you need help to maintain or lose weight, ask your doctor for healthy ways to achieve your goals. Weight loss should be done slowly by increasing your exercise and reducing the number of calories that you consume. Your diet should be rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans and whole grains which provides the nutrients and antioxidants that help fight disease. Choose a variety of fruits and vegetables so that you get a wide array of vitamins and nutrients. Limit your intake of red meat and food that’s high in fat or processed. Finally, quitting smoking and limiting alcohol consumption can help, as well. If you choose to drink alcohol then do so in moderation by limiting it to no more than one drink a day for women and two for men. If you need help to quit smoking you can talk to your doctor, who can help find a method that works for you.

5. Know your options Talking with your doctor is the best way to manage your risk. Your doctor will be able to provide you with the best course of action if you have an above-average risk for colon cancer. CANCER DOESN’T CARE HOW OLD YOU ARE According to the Colon Cancer Alliance, 10% of new colon cancer patients are under 50 years of age, and that number is growing. Young-onset patients are often misdiagnosed so know the symptoms and practice prevention to maintain a healthy colon. KNOW THE FACTS ABOUT COLON CANCER

Colon cancer is the second leading cancer-related cause of death in the U.S. The average risk of having colon cancer is 1 in 20; however this varies depending on individual

risk factors. Individuals with a first-degree relative, (i.e., parent, sibling or offspring) who has colon cancer

have a risk that is two to three times greater. There are currently more than one million colon cancer survivors in the U.S.
