From: Gene MillerThe 45th Sands-Regency USPPA event, Gene Stary’s dream, attracted165 players and was once again in the capable hands of Tony Annigoniand Scott Smith. Host hotel since its inception, the Sands Regencyadded $12,000 prize money, creating a payout to 39% of theparticipants. Action began with the Early bird on Thursday eveningfollowed by the main event, Friday thru Sunday.Could you use a free pickup? BIG news. Next December they’regiving away a brand new truck! REALLY! If you log 36 playdates during2008, you’re in the drawing. More details on this fantastic giveawayat the USPPA website.

Foulfest: You mightwonder what

such a huge event without the 3-foul rule. In over 300 matches, NOTHING!There were a few matches when players went to five or more consecutivefouls, but not one match was voided by stalemate. It reinforces my beliefthat the three-foul rule was originated by a confirmed safety player whodreamed of torturing small, defenseless house pets. On a couple of

amusing occasions during the tournament, its absence created bonafidecomic relief. The Forrest Roberts - Steve Berger match went into a hilariousfouling contest until one of them got creative. It reminded me of taverntournaments I used to play in the 70’s when we had no rules at all. Youcould sneak around nudging balls and fouling forever. The players enjoyed the spanking new Diamond tables, and it was generallya very friendly gathering with consistently good sportsmanship throughoutthe five days of competition that began with Thursday’s race-to-five warm-up. All matches in the main event were best eight of fifteen games with amaximum spot of five games. Thanks to the sponsors - Jacoby, Tonkin, Simonis: Two beautiful and unique$1,000 Tonkin cue sticks were donated just for this event, awarded to thebest finish among two lower-average classifications. Robert Garcia andFrank Giordano went the furthest in their groups, and they each have avery nice new cue. A drawing for a $3,000 Jacoby cue was also held but Ididn’t catch the winner’s name.Free room: Anybody finishing in the final eight of the handicap event got afree room at the Sands if they stayed for the open tournament. Hard topass up that deal, considering eighth place was $750.We have a winner: As to the competition, nobody among this region’splayers would be surprised to learn that Carl Wilson Jr. took home the$3,000 first prize. He stayed in high gear for every match and was seldombehind. In the finals, both he and Jeff Heath had 96 averages, and Carlbreezed to the finish line over Jeff Heath, 8-5, 8-2. Carl (USPPA avg, 96)began with wins over Don Parker (51), Jesus Fernandez (48), Ken Young(28) and Scott Ota (61) before taking a loss from Mike Morang (43). On theleft side of the board he defeated Bobby Herr (83), Phillips Yee (64), MarshallAnonby (79), Jamie Bruce (83) and Frank Giordano (57) taking him to thechampionship with Heath.

I’d like to respond to the question inyour editorial from October.(Yes, 2007, I’m not that far behind)As a tournament director who likesto think about situations like this onewhere a player at a practice tableclaims a guy comes up and asks himif he wants to play some and thenclaims it was a match, I’dlike to give my opinion.First of all, I say the correct action iseasy and obvious in this case. Butbefore I give it I’ve got to say thedirector doesn’t know who is lying, but one of them is. Barring anyinformation at all he must let theresult stand and warn both of themhe will remember this. If he everhears of or witnesses a similar eventfrom either of the players heimmediately tells that director or, if ithappens again in one of histourneys, rules against the repeatoffender and warns aboutdisqualification. It’s possible a playermight break the ice with a commentlike, “Want to play some pool?”, sothat isn’t meaningful. However, in this case the facts thatthe two agree on make it an easydecision. They didn’t lag or flip forthe break. It was on a practice table. One of them is lying. You, asdirector, must rule that the match didnot take place. They play it on anassigned table. No tournament callsa match or schedules a match byhaving the players go find an emptytable. There is always anassignment. Only if both agreed itwas a legitimate result would youallow that result to stand. Anydisagreement means no match. Thatsimple. Now I hasten to point out this doesn’tprove who lied; the one claiming nomatch may have seen thepossibilities when his opponentcame to the practice table wantingto just play the match there. Thepoint is, you, as director, aren’tsupposed to play God (or St. Peter). You just make the correct decisionand then remember the situation incase it ever crops up again. This iscommon in sporting events. You can’tpeer into their hearts; you can onlycall what is correct, which in this caseis that they disagree about thematch but agree that one of them islying. Therefore, the one fact neithercan argue with is that the matchwasn’t played where it was supposedto be played. No excuse. No match.

Thanks, Curt Watts

Glenn Atwell, Pete Gates, Al Perez, Todd Gooch

By Mike JensenThe Cadillac Island Casino in Longview, Washington held a nine ball

handicap tournament in November. Pete Gates from Bend, Oregon wasthe winner. Pete has played in several Cadillac tournaments and this timeclawed his way to the top. The last four players on the winners side wereTodd Gooch, rated a nine vs. Pete Gates rated a seven, with Pete thevictor, and Al Perez rated a nine vs. Steve Tune rated a nine, with Al comingout on top. The battle for the point would be Al Perez going to nine gamesand Pete Gates going to seven games. Pete Gates won the point matchand sat back to wait for the B side winner to advance. The player battlinghis way through the B side was none other than Glenn Atwell one of theNorthwest’s toughest competitors. Glenn beat Steve Tune, Todd Gooch, and Al Perez to have another shot at Pete. It only took one set to prove thefour game spot was too much for Glenn. Pete played steady and undauntedto claim his first title at the Cadillac Island.

Al Perez, Jeff Baker

By Mike JensenLongview, WA - Al Perez pulls off win at Cadillac Island Casino 9-BallHandicap. Al finished a strong 3rd place at the previous 9-ball tournamentin November and came to the December tournament determined to doeven better. The players in Longview are no strangers to Al Perez. He lived in Longviewfor quite a while and honed his game by playing a lot of locals for years. Heplayed in the daily afternoon games at Grumpy’s Tavern for a while. Iremember my brother-in-law, Tommy Rice asking me if I liked his newpants one day. I said yes, there okay and he said they are compliments ofAl from the afternoon games at Grumpy’s! This went on for some time andso did the stories ofAl playing otherlocal players, likeGeorge Moore formonths on end.Time went on andAl moved to thePortland areawhere he becamea respectedmoney player inthat area andthrough out theNorthwest. He isalways a pleasureto have at ourt o u r n a m e n t s .Congratulations toAl for a greattournament. Al played Jeff Baker, a regular at our tournaments for the point.Al came out on top and sent Jeff to play Glenn Atwell, to see who would geta second chance at Al. Jeff rated at seven games was the winner over Glenn who was rated ateleven games and then went on to play Al. Al was rated at nine games andJeff at seven. They went hill hill the first set and Al pulled off the win. A bigcongratulation to Jeff Baker for his second place finish.See you in January for some 8-Ball!

A large part of learninghow to play wellinvolves pushing backyour frontiers. You arecomfortable in parts ofyour game but thereare parts that mightterrify you, such asdrawing the cue ballmore than three feet or80-degree cuts on thegame ball. Practiceshould help to take the

terror out of those “terra incognito” regions.Power shots are one area to work on, but thismonth let’s try the other side — soft shots withprecise control of speed. These are mostuseful when playing safeties and just rolling aball into a pocket.I got this drill from Tom Riccobene of NewMexico, who has just completed his trainingas an Advanced Instructor in the BCA’sInstructor Training Program. I didn’t do verywell at first, but it’s fun and attention grabbing. The idea is to shoot a series of balls from thehead string and make each one travel a littlefarther than the one before. The cue ball isnot involved — just hit each object ball withyour cue stick. In the diagram are thebeginning and ending positions for a typicalattempt with 8 balls. Things went OK untilball 7 which didn’t get past the six.The first technique to work on is visualizing

where the ball should go and thenputting it there. Pick a precise spot onthe table. With a ball already out there, pick a certain distance past that ball. For the first balls, I try to put the nextball exactly one ball beyond theprevious. For the balls farther out, that’stoo much precision for me, so I try for ahalf-diamond past the previous ball. You will probably need to shorten yourbridge. There are lots of reasons touse a shorter bridge on this kind of shot.A 4-inch bridge is not to short for thefirst shots. Really. Try it.As you get better at controlling your softspeed, add more balls to the line withthe ultimate goal of shooting all 16 balls.I’ve done all 16 once, and the key wasleaving the first 10 balls between theline and the side pockets. That leftmore room and chance for error on thelast 6.When you have made good progresson this drill, and I think you will seeprogress within 10 minutes of practice, try the drill in the other direction: Shootthe first ball as far down the table asyou can without hitting the far cushion, then shoot the next one so it doesn’tquite reach the first, and so on.Do you have a favorite, fun drill? Sendit in to my email address, and I maywrite it up in a future column.

from: Steve Booth - One Pocket Hall of FameThe recent passing of ‘Chicago Bugs’ Rucker is a sad reminder of justhow important the One Pocket Hall of Fame is to these great players, many of whom have been overlooked by the pool and billiard establishmentfor years. If you have never been to one of our annual Hall of Fame dinners at theDerby City Classic, it is hard to explain the special quality of the experience.Let me just say that our banquet is an unusual mix of strong emotionalsentiments, and rousing entertainment. The emotional part might surpriseyou, because frankly, these are some of the toughest hombres in pool! Ofcourse the storytelling is to be expected, because these are the greatcharacters & storytellers in pool. Put these two components together inthe company of about 135 players and peers, and you can see why manypeople describe our dinner as the highlight of their week at Derby City -and that is saying something! So I hope you can come. Dress is casual, and the banquet room isconveniently located right in one of the main Derby City Classic host hotels. The Executive Inn is directly across the street from the Executive West, with free shuttle service back and forth; we try to make it as easy aspossible. The dinner takes place Tuesday night, January 8th.If you cannot come this year, but you still like the idea of helping out, I wouldlike to suggest you consider buying a ticket to sponsor one of our manyguests. If you do, I will very happily get one of the Hall of Fame playerposters signed for you, and I will also send you a copy of this year’s program.Click here for 2008 One Pocket Hall of Fame Dinner Info and to make yourreservations. It sure looks like this year’s Derby is shaping up to be the best yet; I hope tosee you there!

Mary Rakin of the United States and Pin Yi Ko of Taipei are the new JuniorChampions of the World. They took their titles today in Willingen, Germanyat the conclusion of the WPA World Junior Championships for 2007.This is nothing new for Mary Rakin. She won this same event last year, but

took the longestroad possible torepeat the feat.Coming into theevent as thenumber oneseed shedropped hervery first match(7-4) to DeniseWilkinson ofNew Zealand. From there shewent on anu n d e f e a t e dromp throughthe rest of thefield. Her second

match was nearly the end of her road, but she got by Anja Wagner ofGermany (7-6) and then easily took down both Hui Ching Yap of Singapore(7-2) and fellow American Briana Miller (7-2), the 12-year-old wonder witha very big future. This put her into the redraw that signals the start of single-elimination play and her first match there was another close one as sheescaped Kristina Schagan of Germany by a single game (9-8). When shethen stepped on Kim Witzel of Germany (9-4) it meant she had once againmade the finals of the Worlds. Her opponent in the final attempt was Tina Buhnen. Strangely, Buhnen hadalso lost her first match of the week, and to the same Denise Wilkinsonthat had sent Rakin left as well! (Wilkinson wound up in fifth place.) Buhnenhad easily taken down Sabrina Naverschnig of Austria (9-4) in the Semi-Finals prior to finding herself across the felt from Rakin. This would notprove a comfortable spot to be as Rakin found her best game of the weekand simply tortured Buhnen to win going away at 9-2 to take her secondconsecutive World Title. Asked if pool would be in her future she replied:“Yes, but not until after I finish school. School first, then pool.” Pressed asto whether she would be knocking on the door of the WPBA after collegeshe grinned: “Yeah, I think so!”The young men had watched for the last three years as Yu Lun Wu of

Taipei had owned the field and won three World Championships on thetrot. When he defeated Yusuke Shibata of Japan 11-7 in the Semi-Finals itseemed a near certainty that history was about to repeat itself. But comingthrough the field undefeated (as had Wu) was last year’s runner-up, Pin YiKo, also ofC h i n e s eTaipei. Ko hadto defeata n o t h e rTa i w a n e s eplayer, KuiMing Lin (threeof our foursemi-finalistsw e r eTaiwanese) inorder to get tothe final stageagain but afterhe managedthat (11-8) hewalked out intothe main arena with an air of confidence that was palatable.Ko took an early lead and never looked back. He won the first three racks, dropped one, and then won three more to lead 6-1 in the race to eleven. After eleven racks he led the race 8-3 in a shining match that had displayedeight break and runs to that point. Wu made a strong charge from thereand brought the match close at 8-7. But then Ko took control again andwon the next three racks to take the crown 11-7. How well did they play?According to Stan Shuffett, who was tracking every shot, Ko shot an Accu-Stat score of .962 (1.000 is perfect and nearly unheard of) while Wu firedan .858 in his failed bid. Adult pros shoot those same types of scores towin major titles. The WPA wishes to heartily thank all of the sponsors whose efforts madethis fine event possible. These include bwin.com, Iwan Simonis, DynamicBilliards, Aramith Billiard Balls, Gutshoff Itterbach, the City of Willingen,Germany, The EPBF, The WPA, the IBP Foundation, and the host site, thebeautiful Sauerland Stern Hotel.MEN1) Pin Yi Ko (TPE)2) Yu Lun Wu (TPE)3) Yusuke Shibata (JPN), Kui Ming Lin (TPE)5) Mathew Lawrenson (GBR), Attila Bezdan (HUN),

Theformat was double elimination witha one race final to eleven games. The field for this event drewseventeen players includingAlexander’s own Ron Merseal whowent undefeated to the hot seat. Chuck Evans, who eventually won thetournament, lost early to Steve Henderson and had to fight his way throughthe one-loss bracket to get into the finals against Ron. Ron had won the hot seat by defeating Frank Wellman. Chuck, nearingthe end of the one-loss bracket, won a rematch with Steve Hendersonleaving Steve in 4th place. Chuck then defeated Frank Wellman in the one-loss side final leaving Frank with a very respectable 3rd place finish. In the one race to (11) final, Chuck kept Ron in his seat and ran away withthe finals (11) games to (5). Dennis, who seemed to be the onethat just never got the shots needed to get started, was the first playereliminated. Mike or Mitch traded places early as the money leader as Scottstruggled but was able to hang in. At one point Mitch was shooting themoney ball which would have also eliminated Scott. Mitch rattled the ballwhich in turn gave Scott new life. As is his usual pattern, Scott tookadvantage of that miss and stormed back to eliminate Mike. Scott andMitch then battled it out for the next hour before Scott was able to eliminateMitch and win the $1000.00

The six “rooms”participating in the 2007 tour wereMetro Sportz Bar, Alexander ’s,Kolbys, Main Street Mesa,Sixshooters, and On The Snap inPrescott, Arizona. Players earnedpoints for each event they played in. The number of points were based oneach players finish in each event. Thiscash bonus was provided by Chuck Bobbitt of VisualImpressions. Olhausen provided a pool table togo to the winner of a random draw. Predatorprovided a BK-2 cue to the overall winner. Going into the final event at Alexander’s (BarBox 9-Ball) the overall points leader wasthe “Young Gun” Mitch Ellerman. Mitchheld a 150 point lead over Scott Frost. Resolutions, Motivations, and AffirmationsBy Roger Long

Advanced Certified InstructorIt’s that time of year again: the time formaking a bunch of New Year’s resolutionsthat may be formulated with the best ofintentions, but without any idea of how wemight keep them. Why do we do this toourselves every year? What good areresolutions, anyway, if we’re not going tobe ‘resolved’ to carry them out? Why arewe so bad about affirming our resolutions?Last year, I made only one resolution: Iresolved to lose 30 pounds. Now that’s thesame resolution I’ve made for the past tenyears, but without ever coming close toachieving my goal. However, this last time

around, there was something different involved - I was motivated. You see, I had long been of the opinion that aging and poor conditioningcan have ill effects on a pool player’s game. Maybe you have also been ofthe same opinion? For evidence supporting this opinion, just look at howour eldest and most experienced players - the ones we would tend to believewould have “the nuts” in such a physically soft game as pool - are neverthe ones at the top of the rankings. As further evidence, let me tell you about a very close friend of mine who isa world-class player; a real champion. Well, he used to be, anyway.Nowadays, he usually finishes in the money in the really big tournaments, but he doesn’t stand much chance of winning them, anymore. He can onlywin the smaller ones. Oh, his game is still much better than 99.9% of allplayers out there, but it’s the players at the very top of the heap that he maynever be able to beat again. What has made the difference in my friend’s play? Well, I think it is probablythose two things I’ve already mentioned: age (he is now in his early forties)and lack of good conditioning. Now, I know the process of aging can’t bestopped, and will necessarily bring on certain unwanted changes in anyperson’s abilities; but good conditioning is one thing that all pool playerscan utilize to help offset the negative effects of aging.I remember that my friend used to tell me how he was feeling completelyexhausted at the end of those two-day tournament he used to win. At thattime, I couldn’t fully appreciate what he was saying because I had neverbeen under pressurized conditions such as those. I didn’t realize the toll ittakes on one’s mind and strength to have to bear down for long periods oftime.Since that time, however, I have learned what my friend was talking about. So, a number of years ago, I started telling my students that they shouldkeep themselves in good physical condition if they desired to givethemselves an edge in competition. But my advice usually went unheeded.Wondering why that was, I stopped and took a good look at the example Iwas setting. There I was; way out of shape. Why would anyone want totake advice from someone who wasn’t practicing what he was preaching? That’s when I realized that my motivation should be to shape up for mystudents’ sake. Up to that time I had been resolving to lose weight only formyself. I knew it would be good for me, but that alone didn’t seem to motivateme enough to go ahead and affirm my resolution. But now I had this newmotivation: I needed to prove a point! I wanted to show my students that Icould not only reach my goal for a good physical condition, but that it wouldpay the dividends I thought it should. So, at the beginning of this past year came my latest resolution to losethose 30 pounds. Now, twelve months later, I’m happy to report that I’veexceeded my goal by two pounds! But the best news is that my weightloss wasn’t primarily due to strict dieting, although controlled eating didplay a role in it. No, what really did the job for me was exercise - LOTS ofexercise. Samm Diep (c) December 2007Losing sure can bring out the worstin people. I recently witnessed alocal, experienced AAA player throwa complete tantrum afterlosing a match. He raised hisvoice and began puffing hischest like a big bully. Hewasn’t going to back downuntil he got his way. Namecalling and making a hugescene was not beneath him.It was a sad, sad sight; especiallysince I’d always admired this player’sability and gotten along with him up

until this point. I had instantly lost so much respect. What causes losing to bring out such uncontrollable rage? We can attributeit to competitiveness, but that can not excuse our actions. In our sport, there will always be a clear cut winner and loser. Though noone likes to lose, someone inevitably will. Not sure what the difference is? Worried you may fall under the Sore Losercategory? Well, here’s a little checklist to help you recognize the behavior. The Sore Loser:

* Doesn’t shake their opponent’s hand* Pouts / Makes others uncomfortable* Gets angry / Is rude* Raises their voice / Makes a scene* Makes excuses for their loss

The Gracious Loser:* Shakes their opponent’s hand* Respects & congratulates their opponent* Recognizes the defeat and spends their energy towards improvement* Accepts responsibility for their loss

Even the best will fail at some point. Even when you play your best, youmay not necessarily win. It’s impossible to always win all the time. In nearlyevery competitive situation, someone will lose. That’s no phenomenon. It’show you handle the loss that makes all the difference in the world. Not only does being a sore loser leave a bad taste in the mouths’ of everypoor soul that had to witness it, but when you’re a gracious loser, you’re

focusing on the future and not on the past. You’re internalizing that therewill be more tournaments to play and you’re choosing to focus on what youcould do differently next time. The sore loser is unable to let go of theirloss.

Perhaps the most unfortunate part of beinga sore loser is that when you can’t get overthe loss and you’re holding on to the past, you may miss out on other opportunities dueto your sour attitude. Even though you didn’twin, no one will remember that three-rail kick-combo to win the first game or the four racksyou strung together to make it hill-hill. They

will only remember the tantrum you threw and all the whining you didafterwards. How do you want to be remembered? I choose to be a GraciousLoser.I wish you and your loved ones a most Spectacular New Year!!!Keep lovin’ this great game!PLEASE BE SURE TO VISIT THE NEW & IMPROVED TIP JAR ATPOOLTIPJAR.COM. 2007 Sands Regency2007 Sands Regency2007 Sands Regency2007 Sands Regency2007 Sands Regencyby: Don “Cheese” AkerlowReno, NevadaDecember 4-9, 2007 saw the Sands Regency HotelCasino host the 167 player field for the 45th Reno Open. The Sands had generouslyadded $26,000 to this eventbringing the prize fund tonearly $50,000. Scott Smithand Ken Shuman acted asthe tournament directors andkept everything runningsmoothly and on schedule. All players knew when theirmatches were scheduledand it ran like clockwork. Theonly thing that couldn’t bedetermined was when thetournament would end sincethis was a double eliminationformat and a challenger fromthe one loss side might takethe tournament to a secondfinal set. And that is exactlywhat happened. The OTBnTV crew arrived on Thursday, two days afterthe tournament had started and the field was startingto be narrowed down. We began to see playerseliminated from the tournament and some great matchups on the winners side bracket. So we set up ourcamera and began filming. Becka Larkin our rovingreporter arrived on Friday and started off by interviewingMike Davis just outside the tournament room. That

interview andmore can befound on theReno Open pageof theO T B n T V. c o mwebsite alongwith footage fromThursday andSaturday’s playand with clipsfrom thesemifinals and

both rounds of the finals in their entirety. This was an exciting tournament with action going on

all the time. There were alot of pro players as well asvery notable semi pro andamateur players in the field.Names like Gabe Owen,Mike Davis, Jose Parica,Edwin Montal, JohnnyArcher, Shane Van Boening,Billy Palmer, Mark Tadd,Justin Bergman and even 15year old Chuckie Holyoakfrom the Seattle,Washington area whofinished in an astounding 5thplace and was eliminated byShane Van Boening 9-4.Saturday the field had beennarrowed down and by theend of the night only the finalfour remained. Matches

were scheduled for 11:00 am, 1:00 pm with the finalsbeginning at 3:00 pm. The final four were: Edwin Montal,Mark Tadd, Johnny Archer and Shane Van Boening. KenSchuman, TD, intervied the final 3 of 4 players left inthe tournament. Mark Tadd was unable to make theceremonies preceding the finals due to a dress codeissue, but did arrive in time for his scheduled matchwith Archer. You can see the interviews with Archer,Van Boening and Montal by logging on to OTBnTV.comand clicking on the Reno Open. While Archer was facing off with Tadd on one table,Van Boening and Montal were on the other. EdwinMontal was eliminated in 4th place after a tough foughtmatch against Shane. It was a 7-7 tie when Edwinscratched giving Shane the opportunity to run out therack and break and run the final rack. Tadd lost to Archer9-3 and had to face Van Boening in the 1 pm match toplay for the opportunity to face Archer in the finals.Archer was having an amazing run during thistournament. He had met and defeated his first fouropponents without losing a game! His score after four

matches was 36-0. He was the player to beat. So hesat on the point and waited for his opponent to bedetermined in the match between Shane Van Boeningand Mark Tadd. Shane was in stroke after his matchwith Edwin and made quick work of Mark winning thematch 9-4.Now to thefinals, Shanehad to beatJohnny twiceto take homethe victory.Since Johnnyhad sentShane to theone loss side, this was arevenge matchfor Shane. The set went back and forth until both playerswere at 7, Shane finished out rack 15. A break and runin the next rack had Shane winning the first set 9-7.One more set and Shane would be the 2007 Reno OpenChampion. This time it was all Shane as he jumpedout to a 3-1 lead, then increased that to 6-3 and finallyfinished out the match at 9-3. Shane Van Boening isnow in the record books as the 2007 Reno OpenChampion. We would like to thank the Sand Regency and MickMcMillin for all the hard work they did in getting thetournament room ready and for having us there, and toScott Smith and Ken Shuman for doing an excellentjob as tournament directors and OTBnTV interviewers.OTBnTV was honored to be a small part of the actionand to be able to bring to the pool players, who werenot able to attend, video of the finals and semi finalrounds. Record Turnout for Straight Pool Tournamentfrom: Bill BradfordTwenty-one players participated in the 14.1Tournament at Sam’s Billiards in Portland onSunday, December 2. David Randell came in 1st,winning matches against Art May, MitchellHenderson, Chad Kurokawa, Buzz Poleson, andSam Rabito. Sam Rabito was 2nd, beating DarinWalding, Fred Matzke, Justin Lilje and DamianRebman before falling to David in the finals. With21 players, the tournament was broken into sevengroups of three, with the top person from eachgroup and one wild card player moving on to the finals. The upset in thefinals was Buzz Poleson, the wild card, beating Bob Zack, the number 1seed. Bob did come back to win 3rd place as well as the high-run prize. It was a pleasure to have a couple of players from out of state, Bill Engerfrom Seattle and Lee Larson from Minneapolis. Both players played well.Bill advanced to the finals but didn’t end up in the money.

The volume of players forced a format of 40-point,time-shortened games in the finals, which didn’tgo over well with several players. The popularityof this tournament is creating more friction as Iattempt to provide ample playing time and chancesfor success, balanced against completing thetournament in a reasonable amount of time. In acontinuing (and probably futile) effort to try to quellthe dissatisfaction I will continue to tweak theprocess. Many thanks to all those who put up with

the format. I’m pleased to have made it through the tournament in 7 hours. The final results were as follows:1st $85 David Randell2nd $70 Sam Rabito3rd $50 Bob Zack4th $30 Buzz PolesonHigh Run: 29 - Bob Zack

And one of the benefits I’ve received from so much exercise is greaterendurance. Another is a higher level of concentration, which I believe isdue to having a sharper, less-fatigued mind. Still another is a higher level ofconfidence that is probably derived from having a higher self-esteem.Lately, I’ve been able to work long days and then go out and compete longnights without running out of gas. My win percentage has gone up, and myblood pressure has gone down. My attitude is better, and my outlook isbetter. I feel better, and I’m performing better. And now I’m beginning to get the results I was really after all along: mystudents are no longer snickering when I talk to them about physicalconditioning.

Rodders Grub and Pub in OregonCity recently hosted the 3rd Annual funCascade Pool League MidseasonTournament. Good players, mixedwith players on the rise, met in thishandicapped extravaganza, whereover $2,300 in prize money was won.The three-day weekend leaguetournament drew over 60 differentCPL players from over 48 leagueteams. They came to play one or allthe special events. The three-daytournament featured hundreds ofhandicapped 9-Ball, 8-Ball, and OpenScotch Doubles games, played overeight tables. The format changed toallow more players to enter this year as the event took place over twoweekends instead of cramming all the players in one weekend. Many newplayers took advantage of the experience.Damian Rebman, a new CPL member on the block, won the Saturday 8-ball with stellar play. He beat the Steve Copher. Steve won the first set fromDamian but couldn’t double dip him. Todd Gooch played well in his 3rdplace finish. Sean the man Stevenson 4th always plays tough. 43 playersentered 8Ball.Steve Copher & Tony Dunlap showed off some skills, playing very well intheir bid to dominate the scotch doubles event. Eve Stockstill and ToddGooch runners up played supurb getting to the final match. Clearly secondbest in the event. John Scudder and Andrew Monstis lost their first matchand went on a long run to end up 3rd.pre event favorites Damian Rebmanand Gary Crane were 4th. There weresome close finishes. In the 9 Ball held the followingweekend Todd Gooch playing like ademon beat Damian Rebman after hewon the first set from the loser round.Cody Johnson 3rd is a force to bereckoned with we soon will see himjump to Open A’s. And always steadySteve Tune was 4thThis year’s surprise talents wereMickey Mixon and Faye Fang, whoboth placed high in 8 ball. Big singleswins came from Fay Fang, Luke Wheeler and Herb Johnson, who beat upon their share of higher ranked players during the 8-ball event. In scotchRob Nicholson and Pete Discaiscio Sr, Dave Cobb and Dave Avegio, NinaDoel and Dan Rodriguez beat some pretty good teams. If you were watching, there was great shot making and position play by theregional master level players. They weren’t the only one who shot great.Other great match play was seen from Cecil Pickett, Rich Zumwalt. BonnieJones, and made players earn whatever they could get. The same wastrue for Eve Stockstill, who played great. She is getting tougher and gainingvaluable experience. Returning Scotch Doubles team Julie Deboer andMike Dubendorf brought their games again. This year Sportsmanship notice went to Steve Copher and Dan Rodriguez,

while they continued to give playersfits on the table. Cody Johnson wasrunning around trying to convinceplayers not that he could play but thathe was giving up too much spot...however, that didn’t really work to hisadvantage. And then there was CathyDuenas, who provided entertainmenton and off the table. Cathy Duenasdid her part by being Kasey Hamm’sscotch partner. A great round ofsportsmanship was available buteveryoneThe 3rd annual event providedCascade Pool league players anopportunity to get together outside the

regular weekly league match setting. Since they are spread out over theMetro area many only get to see others play at these CPL events. ManyCPL players play week in and week out throughout the entire year, somefor years on end. These players, all part of a pool community, deserved theopportunity to do more than just show up weekly to qualify for the ChinookWinds Regional. Andrew Monstis League operator believes that doingsomething for the players is vital, and plans for next year’s event to provideeven more prize money. CPL is sanctioned by the BCAPL, using BCAPLrules and guidelines.Because of the handicaps, predictability went out the window. Some peoplegrumbled over getting beat, but most just took their lumps. Some thoughtothers received too much handicap, but many just played really well. It

was hard for those who had to giveup a spot, but it did even out manymatches. Many players got anopportunity to beat players that theynormally would not. The spot madeit fun and grueling and alwaysuncertain. Open level players couldand did compete with the masterplayers. Many matches went hill hill.Volunteer Tournament DirectorsAndrew Monstis and Kurt Hamm ranthe tournament smoothly, largelybecause Starla Mixon did most of thework. These guys worked over 50hours to put on this tournament

during, before and after.Bowing heads to Cathy and John ‘JJ’ Johnson, owners of Rodders Gruband Pub, and their staff, for their continued support of CPL’s league players. They were instrumental in putting this event on the map. It is great to seesponsors holding local events for league players. JJ does it better thananyone, adding significant money to the pot, showing players that it’s notalways about the buck and that success can be achieved through fun anda great showing of appreciation for his customers and friends. CPL playerswere appreciative of their efforts throughout the weekend. The food andservice were excellent.9-Ball Singles Winners: 1st Todd Gooch, 2nd Damian Rebman, 3rdCody Johnson, 4th Steve Tune , 5/6 Dan Rodriguez, Mickey Mixon , 7/8Chris Nall, Lionel Rodriguez8-Ball Singles Winners: 1st Damian Rebman, 2nd Steve Copher, 3rdTodd Gooch, 4th Sean Stevenson, 5/6 Tony Dunlap, Gary Crane, 7/8 FayFang, Mickey Mixon, 9-12 Steve Tune, Bill Ruddick, Dave Avegio, LukeWheeler.Scotch Doubles Winners: 1st Tony Dunlap and Steve Copher, 2nd ToddGooch and Eve Stockstill, 3rd John Scudder and Andrew Monstis, 4thDamian Rebman and Gary Crane, 5-6 Dave Cobb and Dave Avegio, KurtHamm and Luke Wheeler, Mays, 7-8 Julie Deboer & Mike Dubendorf,Kasey Hamm & Cathy Deunas.Up next for Cascade Pool league is the Interdivisional in January and AwardsParty in February where the “Trip” will be had.......

USA 8 - 11 EuropeTEAM EUROPE has won the 2007 PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup followinga dominating performance over the final three days of the competition thatsaw them win ten out of 14 matches.Fittingly it was German veteran RalfSouquet, who played in the first everMosconi Cup back in 1994, whopotted the winning 9 ball to securean 11-8 victory and send his team intoa frenzy of celebration.Making a record- equaling 11appearances, Souquet sealed aglorious victory, as he came frombehind against Rodney Morris to win6-4 in what was the final game of thetournament.Shane Van Boening and then EarlStrickland had kept American hopesalive with wins over KonstantinStepanov and Daryl Peachrespectively. But another win fromTony Drago, this time over JohnnyArcher, set Souquet up for hismoment of history.“I’m very, very proud of the team. Notone player can win the Mosconi Cup, only the team and the coach can winit”, said Souquet.“On the first day we did not act or play like a team and no one feltcomfortable.“We had a very long talk on the same day and we had things to change. We said we are a team and that we could win it,” he added.Leading 9-6 overnight, the European captain Johan Ruijsink, thought longand hard about his critical running order for the Sunday singles. He optedto send his least experienced player out first as Konstantin Stepanov wentup against America’s Shane Van Boening. Both players looked nervous as they missed balls but it was Van Boening’ssuperior skills down the home stretch that carried him to a 6-4 win.Tony Drago then stepped into the fray and cemented his Most ValuablePlayer credentials with yet another fine win, this time over Johnny Archerby 6-3.There was a feeling that the pressure of the Mosconi Cup may have hadan adverse effect on the Maltese potter, but once again he delivered thegoods under the most testing of conditions.“Obviously, I was the weakest link in the tournament! To win this cup is anhonour. Hopefully I will be in the team again next year and I can’t wait towelcome our US friends to Europe next year, said Drago.“We had the best coach in Johan, the World Champion in Daryl, the most

dedicated player in Niels, a great future player in Konstantin, the scariestplayer that ever lived in me and the best player in the world in Ralf.

“It was so easy for us to come heremotivated and we were playing thestrongest team ever to play for theMosconi Cup and it was in America.World Champion Daryl Peach had agreat opportunity to win the MosconiCup for Europe but ran into an in-formEarl Strickland in an ugly matchmarred by Strickland’s outbursts.‘Scum of the earth’ was how Peachdescribed his opponent followingsome disruptive behaviour during theheated contest.Referee Michaela Tabb was forced tostep between the two players afterPeach snapped as Stricklandbranded him a ‘cheat’. The normallymild-mannered Englishman movedtowards his opponent, asking him tostep outside.Peach claimed that Strickland wastrying to put him off as he constantly

moved and talked when he was at the table, and following a warning fromTabb, the American went off the rails.Order was finally restored and Strickland eventually won the match 6-3following some brilliant play in the closing stages. That left Ralf Souquet the opportunity to win the Mosconi Cup for Europefor the third time in its 14 year history.

from the APA:Normally, this time of year, you wouldbe receiving a Christmas card fromus wishing you a wonderful holidayseason. Even though we do wish thebest for everyone, we do have somesad news that we felt was necessaryto get to as many people as possibleand this seemed that most efficientway to do so.Dana Nakamura passed away onDecember 15th after being strickenwith an unknown virus. Even thoughshe put up quite a battle, her tiny bodyjust could not withstand the traumathat it had to endure while the doctorsand nurses did everything in theirpower to try to save herlife. Dana was just 29 years old and

her passing will leave a hollowspace in the hearts of all who knew her. Dana joined the league just 3days after her 21st birthday. In the last 8 years, she proved that greatthings come in tiny packages as she immerged as a player of high skilland great sportsmanship. Even if you didn’t know her personally, manyof you have run across her during tri-cups, regionals or at ChinookWinds. Her brilliant smile and expertise on the pool table left a lastingimpression on all of us and she will be missed so much. There was a Memorial Service, December 22 at 11 am at GethsemaneLutheran Church in Portland.Cards for the family may be sent to her brother Scott Nakamura at:6111 SE Sigrid St, Hillsboro, OR 97123We will be having a memorial tournament in February to benefit the family
