Medina, from Denver Colorado, hadnt scored a win since the US Bar Table Championships 8-Ball Division back in March. Coincidentally, that tournament was also held at the Sands in Reno. Medina started off on fire with a 9-1 win over Tim Diaz from Sacramento, CA followed up by a 9-4 win over Carl Wilson from Carson City, NV and then a 9-2 win over David Anderson from Anderson, CA. Medina was then tested by Hsin Huang, a great female player from Vancouver. Hsin was just one of the ladies that turned in an excellent performance in Reno this week. She did come up short against Medina however, as he scored the 9-6 win. By that Saturday night the field had been narrowed to 16 men in the open division finals bracket and 8 ladies in the womens division finals bracket. Before going any farther, there are some people I need to thank for all their help. Shelly Mitchell, James Deming, Wade Hudson, Jackie Gradwohl, Chuck Hoagland for helping with the brackets run here at the Eagles Club. Mike Wright for running the womens division at the Molly Brown. Four Reasons WhySuccessful Pool Locations

Increase AdvertisingDuring Slow Economic Times

u Your Competition Is Likely To Cut Back OnAdvertising.

v The Frequent Ads of Successful LocationsBecome More Visible to the Pool Player.

w Studies* Prove That Locations AdvertisingDuring slow times Increase Market Share.

x Locations That Cut Advertising Will Lose MarketShare. Some Will Even Go Bust.

Advertising works over time because it builds name AWARENESS. Italso works because without it the average pool player believes allproducts and services to be the same. When you dont advertise thepool player quickly forgets your name. And, they dont know why youare better than your competition.

Research has shown that the best-performing companies in thelong term are those that continue advertising during an economicslowdown. Your budget may seem tight right now, but the currentslowdown may be an ideal opportunity to bring in new pool playersto your location.

USPPA Classic Press ReleaseThe following is a press release regarding the USPPA Classic held in Reno,12/5/02 thru 12/9/02. The purpose of this release is to shed light on theissues regarding 1st place bonus monies as well as other bonus relatedmatters. With deep regret, I, Tony Annigoni, managing partner of the USPPA, usingmy best judgment, elected to not pay the 1st place bonus of $6000., thuspreserving for the other 2500 plus members the opportunity to competefairly for a revised bonus pool in June 2003.In my judgment, it was obvious even to the untrained eye, that the outcomeof the final match was predetermined. Though less obvious, it appeared inmy judgment that the outcome of the hot seat match involving the sameplayers was also predetermined.Predetermining the outcome of a match in any USPPA tournament or anysporting event is cheating. On that basis the USPPA has the right to withholdprize money, bonus money, and revoke membership privileges as othersports associations as well as pool associations, the APA, mostprominently, do on a regular basis. With rumors running rampant that this would occur, I took it upon myself tomeet with the remaining 8 players, myself being one of that group, to explainthe situation and make all aware of the consequences, if in my judgmentthis activity occurred. The players were all given the following information:

lThere are 8 remaining players, 4 bonus eligible 4 not.lThe membership provision that anyone cheating will be barred

for life was reviewed with all players.lPlayers were further advised that predetermining a match was

cheating, and if in my judgment, cheating occurred, thatbonus money would be withheld.

lFurthermore the players were advised that engaging in anyactivity like that in a gaming facility in the State ofNevada could be considered felony bunko.

The players were further advised that when they engage in activities likesavers, splits and predetermined outcomes, they cheat the spectators, the host, their sponsors, the other members, as well as themselves.

About the AuthorDean Shane Cassem

Born in Charleston, W.Va. to an immigrant father fromLebanon, Dean Shane Cassem picked up his first cue stickat age 15. His father and grandfather before him hadCassems restaurant in Kanawha City, a suburb ofCharleston, which is the state capitol of West Virginia. Fromage 15 to age 20, except for a short stint in Viet Namn,Shane hardly put his cue down and by age 20, had placedsecond in the annual Virginia straight pool tourney (1966).In his twenties, his game went stale from staying in the barsand out of the rooms where stiffer competition would havehoned his game. His stroke subsided completely until hismid thirties when he resurrected his game and won the Coorsstatewide Texas 8-ball Championship in Houston in 1981.Directing his energies to a new wife, his church, and an

interior wall and floor-covering business in the mid to late 80s, his game went dormantagain until he sold his business and returned to school. At age 48, he completed hisundergraduate work in theology, and earned Masters degrees in Marriage & FamilyCounseling and Christian Education. During that time, he developed his writing skillsand has since become the most prolific writer of pocket billiard fiction in America. Shanehas five Carter Keating novels nearly ready for publication: Breakthrough, Resurrection,Backrooms, Twist of Fate and Trade-off. Readers will see Twist of Fate in the bookstoresby November 2002. In addition, he has recently created two new characters; SkinnyMalone and Kelsey Maynard. Currently, Shane also has a Marriage and Family Counselingpractice. He and Mary, his wife of fifteen years, live in Fort Worth, the setting for hisongoing Carter Keating Series. Shane has one daughter, Vickie Linn, a son-n-law, Brian, and a precious granddaughter, Shelbie Linn. You may visit Shanes web sites at;www.carterkeatingnovels.com or creativecounselingconcepts.com

BREAKTHROUGHA Short Story by: Dean Shane Cassem

PART 7In Part One, New friend Dave Wakefield introduces young CarterKeating to pocket billiards for the first time. Keating watches captivelyas Wakefield and Jimmy The Stick Gadwell play nine-ball in WilliesPool Palace. Part One ends as Gadwell completes a spectacularnine ball session with Wakefield, smirks cockily as Wakefield stompsoff, then pulls up a chair next to young Keating for a chat. In PartTwo, Wakefield and Tools Spinard challenge Gadwell and youngKeating to an eight-ball match. Keating agrees, fails to make a shotthe entire time, and faces the ridicule of Spinard, Wakefield, Gadwelland the other patrons in Willies Pool Palace. Young Keating swearsthat he will learn to play the game, and play it well. Part III describesyoung Keatings rapid development as a player and, his introductionto Charley Sturgis, an old and wise mentor, who guides him tomaturity, both as a pool player and as an individual. Part IV findsKeating and Charley Sturgis in Willies Pool Palace dialoguing overa cup of coffee, talking about the rudiments of the game, and thequalities of real winners. Winter comes. Keating drops into Williesafter a winning match at a downtown parlor and whips up on DaveWakefield in a well-played nine-ball match. Afterwards, Russell, theThin Man, Case, offers to back him against none other than Jimmythe Stick Gadwell, the very person who had actually tutored him onthe tables. In Part V, the Stick Gadwell takes a quick lead. Keatingbegs off to the restroom, where he has a needed talk with himself, settles himself down, then returns to the ridicule of the crowd butwith a renewed spirit. Gadwell makes the nine and moves to a threegame lead. The suspense grows in Part VI. Gadwell takes a sixgame to none lead. Then finally young Keating wins two games, making an incredible pressure shot to win his second game. Themomentum begins to change as the match carries late into the night.

THREE HOURS LATER, I HAD FINALLY DRAWN EVEN. We were neckand neck but I was in trouble. Gadwell had played a beautiful safe shotand left me a full table length away from a tight cluster that offered noreasonable out. Ironically, the more I studied the shot the more I reflectedon something Gadwell himself had taught me. The seven and eight werefrozen together, and with right English I could throw the eight enough topossibly make a combination on the nine in the corner. Carefully I studiedthe shot. Then, convinced that the odds were favorable, I barked out thecall and boldly delivered the shot.

Leaving no doubt about the outcome the eight fired out of the clusterand slammed into the face of the nine, driving it unabashedly into the pocket.

A wave of cheers went up around the room and the Thin Man,heretofore silent jumped up from his seat and yelled, Incredible!

Gadwell stared at me angrily. I stared back without expression. For the first time since the match had begun, I led the match.

ONE HOUR LATER, I HADNT MISSED A SHOT. PUTTINGtogether a magnificent seven-rack run, I had gone up by ten games andforgotten about the crowd. And most of all Jimmy the Stick Gadwell. Isolatedin my own world, my mind focused totally on my game.

She currently is a staffwriter for the Tri-City Herald newspaper in Kennewick, Wash. She will be working closely with the current NWPA board to promotewomens pool and its players throughout the Northwest.I hope to be creative and effective in attracting new media interest in

The Rebound ShotThis is a trick shot where the proper hit on ball X as well as thespeed of stroke is critical. Set up the shot as shown in the diagram.Pay particular attention that the line of four balls by the first diamond

are straight and they areall froze together. Hit thecue ball center with aneasy stroke.Aim to hit one third of ballX left of center. This willmake ball X rebound intothe side pocket. You canmake this trick shot agame situation shot byputting the nine-ball infront of the side pocketand have ball X as thelowest ball on the table.Ask your friends to guesshow you will pocket thenine-ball to win the game.See if they can figure itout. If you want to see this shotand many other artistic trickshots performed, Ill beperforming a Trick ShotExhibition at City Lights inTacoma on January 18th at

Being HumanI recently found myself in a situation I was unable to resolvewithout help. Being pretty independent, I was having a hard timethinking of someone to ask for assistance. A poolplayer I have

never run into anywhere stepped up and remediedthe situation. After I regained my crumpledcomposure, and thanked him, we talked. In hiswords, he is a child of God, as we all are, andthat means helping each other. It was such ajolting reality check. Living in Montana, surrounded, still, by most of the golden valueslike knowing & helping your neighbors & offering

roadside assistance, I was nonetheless truly takenaback at the unqualified kindness of this stranger

in my life. I do deeply believe in the basic goodness of humanbeings; however, somewhere along the line I became accustomedto all of us being human, and sloughing many of the niceties offin the hustle & bustle. I was trying to figure out which thingmost surprised me - the random act of kindness or the fact itamazed me so much. It is so easy to focus on only 1/2 of theequation of living do no intentional harm. Somehow, the otherhalf, the quietness of kindness, too easily blends into the blur ofbeing.Years ago, a little story about committing random acts of kindnesscirculated through the email where I worked. We all thought itwas a wonderful story and a great way of describing mindfulness.Priming the pump. What goes around comes around. Weve allheard & used those terms, but often with negative connotations. This one man, with no fuss or fanfare, stepped up to the lineenveloped in his love of God and quietly committed a random actof kindness. Thank you, Robert Coleman, for being a conduit forcare and for reminding me that it is not enough to not do harm.I hope we all commit many acts of random kindness & surpriseothers who are busy being human. I will.Happy New Year, poolplayers. ---Mary Price, amazee

Medina then had another test of a match with JohnSchmidt from Mobile Alabama. Medina won this match9-7 to set up a match with another female player havinga great week, Jenny Lee from Los Angeles. Lee, a regularon the Southern California Ladies Tour, opened someeyes with her 9th place finish in August at the WPBA

Midwest Classic and was opening eyes again with herstrong play in Reno this week. Medina proved to be toomuch for her though as he scored the 9-4 win.Medinas next opponent was last years player of theyear, Corey Deuel. While not having as good a year aslast year, Deuel is always dangerous and has beenplaying extremely well towards the end of this year. Deuelwould also test Medina but in the end, it was Medinapulling out the 9-7 victory to take the hot seat where heawaited an opponent. His opponent would be Corey Deuel again after Deueldefeated last years Reno Open winner Rodney Morris9-5 on the one-loss side. Morris played great all weekand only suffered losses to Deuel. The 9-5 scorebetween Deuel and Morris would be duplicated in thefinals as Medina matched it with his final score againstDeuel.Medina pocketed $12,000 for the win while Deuel settledfor $6,000 for second. Morris and Nick Varner filled outthe top four positions.

One Pocket at McQsBy: Clay Skidmore

December 7-8, 2002SPOKANE, WAA few months ago I began to notice that a lot more ofmy local players were playing one pocket. So I decidedto do a small tournament. I rounded up 14 local playersand had a couple come from Tri-Cities to fill a 16player board and off they went. The format was a raceto two and it took all day Saturday to narrow the field to4 players. Ken Fried was in the winners final playingRandy Morris. Don Wirtiman and Tom Newborn werethe two players left on the B-side. Ken sent Randy tothe B-side and Don cleaned up from there to meet Kenin the finals. In Memory Of ...James Caras

Always A ChampionCheese just told methat my best pool hallbuddy has passedaway. Jimmy Carasand I had spent manyhappy days together inthe 70s. We bookedJimmy thirty days eachyear for exhibitions inOregon andWashington. At thattime he was travelingfor Brunswick and oncehe played a spot I neverhad a problem bookinghim again. Jimmy didntmake the long runs thatWillie Mosconi couldmake but he related to the crowd like no other performer. Hewas a World Champion many years, but it never went to hishead; he was just one of the guys. Always a giant smile; alwaysready to share his humor and knowledge of the game.Jimmy never criticized the equipment or talked down to anowner or player. He once went to a show with a nice rip in thecloth as often happened with the 100% wool. Jim, I said, Illhave that sewn in a minute. I got out my needle heated andbent it, threaded the needle. Pat, bend another needle andIll show you how its done, says Jimmy, and he showed methe baseball stitch. You know I traded selling equipment andwork because Brunswick would never put me on the tour whilethey had Mosconi and Hoppe.Jim knew the business from top to tip. He always tipped hisown cues and showed me the trick of punching the extra holesin the tip for surface. He knew tables and what to expect afterone test shot.Jimmy Caras was a great player and the lifetime averagebetween Jimmy and Willie Mosconi was 2 games for Jimmyand 1 for Mosconi out of three. He had Willies number andWillie hated it. He hated Jimmy for it. In the 60s Wide Worldof Sports sponsored a three game match between the twogreats. It drew a tremendous audience especially for the thirdand final match. Each had won one game and Mosconi wasin the lead on the third game. A long reach was required for avery important shot and Willie always liked to show his ballerinaability to lean over the table and balance on one toe. Withtens of thousands watching Clank and Willie miscued andwent to the chair to watch Jimmy take the game and the BigCash. We always arranged for Jimmy and his English born wife toplay here over St. Patricks Day. There were no exhibitionsscheduled on the 17th & 18th, only party time. My wife andmost of our friends were from Ireland. We would have a realIrish party with the Nobel call. Each person was required to

No one gave either player muchof a chance against Jose.No one told Max though and he jumped into anearly 4-0 lead with Parica and never let up on theway to a 9-3! win. But now he had to face theinvincible Mr. Morris who seemed to effortlesslydemolish anyone in his way. Fresh off his thirdplace in Reno and hungry for a second straightHard Times title, Rodney looked confident andrelaxed prior to the match. The only questionseemed to be, how bad would he beat Max.Wrong question! It should have been the otherway a round. Max sent a strong statement to thepool world that he has arrived, winning goingaway by an 11-5 wipeout.During the tournament, when asked by anonlooker what he hoped to achieve in pool, Maxresponded that he wanted to be a champion. Hetook a big step in that direction this week. AlthoughHard Times is not a major championship, it isalways a difficult test and takes a top playersability to win. This should be a tremendous boostto Maxs confi-dence and he will be a force to bereckoned with in 2003.1. MAX EBERLE $4,000 + $880 Calcutta2. Rodney Morris $2,200 + $550 Calcutta3. He bumped offMike Mares 3-0, Melvin Mackay 3-0, MaxHarbaugh 3-2, Tony Chohan 3-1, SantosSambajon 3-2 and 4-2 in the finals. It looked likebusiness as usual for Mr. Palmer who seems tohave whatever it takes to win his matches. Whenhe needs to come with a big shot, he does, andwhen the game calls for canny strategy, healways has something clever up his sleeve. Lookout for him if he decides to visit Louisville inJanuary. As promised last issue, How The MagicWorks or How to Make a Tip Stick. After tryingall the glues that didnt work in the early 1980sI came across Satalite City and their full lineof super glues. They make threethicknesses, red a thin easy flowing, yellow athicker slower dry and green a very heavy gapfilling glue. The first step in a successful job is to get bothsurfaces clean and as flat as possible. Superglue works by the cyanoacrylate chemical

attracting molecules of both surfaces so anything that stands in betweenwill cause the bond to fail. There is a chain of molecules that builds up onthe bond. One molecule that grabs the H2O molecules on each surfaceand holds the two surfaces as though they are one. We use a 12 discsander to clean the ferrule (You probably dont have one, but a cue topsander at about $10 from me or others). To clean the tip 80 grit sandpaperon a piece of glass or on a flat board, with an awl poke a few holes in the tipfor added surface area.We do a lot of cues for taverns and hand use locations, so to really makea tip stick even if the cue hits the cement floor; we put a drop of GreenSuper T on the ferrule and a drop of Red on the tip and press together atonce. A shot of NCF accelerator to hold in place and slip it into a 6 ft. pipeclamp for 2 minutes. If you miss the bond or the tip is not centered take thetip off and reclean both surfaces. Super glue does not stick well to superglue. If you do stick your fingers together, nail polish remover will free them.If you are just doing a few cues the Yellow glue will give excellent results onits own. Put a drop on the tip and the ferrule and press together with yourthumb. Hold it for about 30 seconds then put the cue butt up resting on thetip. The more glue you put on the longer you have to hold them together. Now you are ready to trim the tip. We have a special jig on the 12 sanderbut a very sharp knife works very well. Invert the cue on a piece of wood;make a small cut following the ferrule pushing forward and downward.Taking tiny bites turn the cue into the knife and trim the tip as flush aspossible with out making it cone shaped. Finish with fine sandpaper. On agood cue start with 240 sandpaper spinning the cue touching only theferrule and tip working finer grits to 600. Clean the shaft with the SheehansSuper Cue Stick Cleaner and sand with 1000 grit or R & S plastic abrasives. Now round the tip by folding a sheet of 60 grit paper in thirds and cup inyour hand pulling toward you at a 30o angle to round to the shape of anickel. Sheehans tip topper will make the job quicker and give perfectresults $10.Now comes the part that makes the tip look like a pro did it. Burnish thesidewall with a piece of leather (we make a form fitting burnisher shapedto fit a cue $6) by wetting the topsides with water or a little spit. Bring theleather downward and squeezing give the tip about 50 strokes or until itshines. This way the tip will not mushroom.Since we have cleaned and sanded the shaft you must now seal it or thesand particles from the cue chalk will work its way into the pores of thewood. I use a special blend of French polishing lacquer adding just a dropor two on a rag and buffing till it squeaks. Youre now ready to do greatharm to your opponent at the table.

In My Opinion ...by: T R Olson

T R Olson

(Opinion continued on page 25)

I simply could not resist a rebuttal to the articles by Jeff Boucher, MaryPrice, and Andrew Monstis. I have had the pleasure of being more intimatelyexposed to this blatant disrespect of the game than most, since the placeI have called home the past six years is the leader in this anti-talentmovement. The pool establishments in my area have made one excuseafter another for the past six or eight years as to why a few select playersare not welcome and it always boils down to the same thing. They hatelosing to anyone who displays an obvious amount more talent than them. The real sacrilege here is not only harming that game of pool and its futureamong other sports, but also settling for mediocrity hurts each and everyplayer with good talent. Lowering the bar is not the right way to makesomeone think they are jumping higher. When I first started playing

tournaments I lived in small ruralcommunity almost 150 miles from theplace I have lived for the last six years. Many of my comrades and I would makethat round trip nearly every Friday nightfor the nickel jackpot tournaments, veryrarely even placing in the money. Thiswas us traveling week in and week outon our rent money just so we could beexposed to better players than we hadin our immediate area. Surely enoughwe were met every week by the same

groups of players who gladly took our rent money and offered up actionwith smiles on their faces. Havent seen any of that lately! Now skip aheada few years and I started not only placing in the money often, but nearlywinning every nickel I played in and even placing high in the occasionallarger tournament. I always simply figured this started to happen becauseI had taken my lumps, but some others seem to think that I just woke upone morning and was magically able to start winning tournaments. Theybegrudged me so for this magical transformation that next thing you knowthere were 10 different excuses for why I was not allowed to play, dependingon who you talked to or where you went. One that still rubs me wrong isthe rumor that I wanted to fight anyone who beat me in my town, not true, but more importantly there was maybe 2 or 3 times that I ever lost to

First let me thank all of you forcontinuing on with my articles. Fromthe volume of email that Im receivingI can see not only that they areenjoyed- they are also provokingthought. And if you stand in a placewhere the articles sit you know thatsome of the provoked thought iscentered around myself. Becauseof this Ive been getting to the localrooms to be accessible forquestioning. So far Ive only gottento speak with 2 people in this regard. One is the best one pocket playerthat Oregon offers. (Oregon onlygets to offer this quality becausehes visiting) He wants to play sowere gonna get that done. Ill callhim MR. BILL. The other one waswith Mr. Bill and Ill callhim.........Dale. And Dale is the onethat had the kind of talk with me thatI am now going to the poolrooms tomake possible. For Dale, he isdiscussing a difficult thing; and thefirst step in coming over is complex.I thank him here for that moment. As we spoke there were a few whoremained angry and away. We willhave to wait and see what theyglean from Dale. I wouldnt want togo through the debriefing theyregoing to give him. And they couldhave done as he did and talk. Itllwork though because Ill be backand open to a second interview. Here is my gift to you in this season

of giving. In order for you to be ableto make sense ofme you wouldfirst have to knowwhether or not Iam skilled in thething that youvalue so much-and from thereyou cannot makesense of mewithout knowinghow I feel abouthaving that skilland from thereyou would have toknow how I feelabout competing. And then youd have to know how Ifeel about competing with you. Some of you in Oregon are left tosift through a few gambling storiesabout me with your local heroes.Come and find out the rest of thestory. We can name the names andthe results. The next gift Ill give youis: that you dont know how I feelabout the things that you discuss. You project onto all of this the waythat you would feel if you werespoken of as Im sometimesspoken of. The way that yourespond is not the only possibleresponse to what you see ascompliments. One of your angersis that I exist without you. Youcannot insult meno matter. And

you leave this article with newwisdom as youread that youc a n n o tcompliment meeither. You seemy friend both ofthose come fromwithin. Words area form ofcurrency andcome in variousdenominations. You cannot go toChina and decidefor the Chinesepeople what yourdollar is worth to

them. You do not get to come to meand dictate the value that I place onwhat you say. If you said to me thatI was the greatest player on earthand you said it in Swahili, we canttransact because I dont know whatvalue to place on the words. If yousaid in Hungarian that I was theworst player on earth, we have alike circumstance. I cannot putvalue to the words. Forget about meand take this new way out into yourlife. It is a skill of absolute value.

Ive got a joke for you. What is thedifference between a pool playerand a pepperoni pizza??a pepperoni pizza can feed afamily of four.

And now to the meat of this article.I was only going to give you a trickshot this month and call it a day. Then with each poolroom visitsomething went on that I think youllhave interest in and be entertainedby. After the above visit I went to HotShots in Beaverton, Oregon.Theres a young woman namedAlisa working there that has askedme to instruct her and we plan tostart in January. She asked meabout a trick shot that she heardabout and I agreed to show it. I tellyou in advance that its a McGilloriginal and you may never have achance to master this one. Notbecause you couldnt master it, youcould. Its not likely because in orderto practice it youd have to lock theroom owner in the janitors closetfirst. Here is a description of theshot. Place a 9-ball in the jaws ofthe corner pocket. Stand parallel tothat same end rail and away fromthe table (the side of the table youreon is opposite the side that the nineis sitting on) you should be standing10 to 12 feet away and 3 to 4 feetbehind the extended short rail line.NOW-bounce the cue ball off of thefloor and go three rails to make thenine. I am at about 85% efficiencyon this shot. I made it for her on thethird shot. She was shocked and

amazed. She just kept laughing and didnt knowwhat to say. Everyone else in the room froze andacted as though nothing had happened. Theywent out of their way to act as though it wasnothing!? I just want to put that in here so maybeitll look stupid to continue doing it. It is one of themost difficult things that I face. Why do you doit? Pat Sheehan Man of the Cloth (see page12) had me on his radio show for nearly a yearas a weekly guest. When he heard about theshot from a caller herushed me to asponsors room after theshow and I made it forhim on the second andthird shots. The bestIve done with it locallyis 4 times in a row atCues Billiards inGresham, Oregon. Then I was having a classand exhibition last night with a new studentnamed Micke and a young man named Jason.(Jason got nickname monkeys because heworks at the primate research center) I willdescribe the shot that they had a reaction to thatonly my students seem to understand or findhumor in. Its the shot that ends the class and Iwind up standing alone and with an open timeslot. They just leave. It is fun to see that reaction and I would still ratherthey stay and ...........well stay and do what, I dontknow now that I have thought about it. Heres theshot: stand at the nameplate and place the 5-ball frozen on the rail and on the 1st diamond toyour right. Now move it to the left 1 object ballwidth. It is better for you to move it to the leftmore than a ball width, say a ball and a third, balland a quarter, etc. Now go to the opposite shortrail and face the nameplate. Place the cue ballmidway between the nearest edge of the pocketon your right and the 1st diamond. Now we aregoing to move the cue ball out from the rail anydistance that you like to bridge from to amaximum of 8 inches. And from here we cut the

5 ball into the right corner pocket! Last night thiswent on the second shot. I call this shot night-night.Next month I am going to either write a mini-manual for instructors or about poolroometiquette and communication. Ill let you decideby email vote which one itll [email protected] I also offer an instructorscourse at the school. You can come to hone yourpresent skills or come and learn to instruct pool.

You cannot knowfrom the articles thatI stutter. Cannot talka lick. Its like Icouldnt get a wordsmoothly across asentence made ofball bearings.Sometimes I say to

players that seem surprised or uneasy Iknow we just met n all but could you possiblyspare a vowel? or I ask if I can buy a vowel.Sometimes I tellem that although they think thatI stutter I dont, its because Im dubbed in English. And the all time favorite is that it aint stuttering,Im just hooked on phonics!Time for me to go. Im gonna email my friend JayKrause and see what he remembers about ourroad trip to San Fransisco and Palace Billiards. We may be able to get a good article and storyout of it. Jay works with Nabisco and he wouldplay with me nearly every day after work and wehad a ball. The problem is that he would come inafter work and have a smoother stroke than Ihad. It was maddening. And more so maddeningthat he couldnt see it! One of the things that Isay to up and coming players regularly is thatyou cant beat us after work. I thought it evenless likely that after work someone could have asmoother stroke than us.Today great laughter at the edge of the lake.Thank you and do the workMcGillThe Pool Whisperer

Gary Smith, WSPL League Coordinator, Kent, WAPoolhall Junkies is as good as The Hustler andThe Color of Money. I found the actors performancesto be realistic and I think it depicted the life of ahustler. The movie had a contemporary theme andplot. Poolhall Junkies creates an interest in playingpool and I would recommend the movie.

Mike Yost, McQs Billiards, Spokane, WAI rated Poolhall Junkies to be as good as The Colorof Money. It had a good plot, real acting and depictedthe life of a hustler well. I particularly liked the hustleat the end of the movie. I think it will do much to getmore people interested in playing pool and shoulddo well at the theaters. I enjoyed it!

Jeff Sherman, Hot Shots Family Billiards,Beaverton, ORThe plot was intriguing, the actors believable and Iliked Poolhall Junkies as much as The Hustler andThe Color of Money. I believe PoolhallJunkies will do well with wide distribution and goodword of mouth exposure.

Clay Skidmore, McQs Billiards, Spokane, WAI liked Poolhall Junkies as much as The Color ofMoney and more than The Hustler. Bill Bauer, Gripper Cue Caddy, Spokane, WAI thought Poolhall Junkies was as good or betterthan The Color of Money. The pool scenes werebelievable, the hustles were great. Show me asequal! Mars Callahan was great, Chazz was greatand Christopher Walken was outstanding. I believeit will create more interest in playing pool.

Sean Finney, All About Cues, Renton, WAI rate Poolhall Junkies better than The Hustler andThe Color of Money. I think we can all relate to thismovie in the sense we all know players who shootlights out, and some wanna be players. The movieshows some of the addiction to the sport. It couldhelp give our sport a boost in the arm and re-up ourlove for the game for those of us who play now.Lets get it out to the rest of the country!

Paul Schorzman, Classic Billiards, Portland, ORPoolhall Junkies is as good as The Hustler. I foundthe movie to be very entertaining with a good plotand most of the acting seemed realistic. I think ithas a chance to do good at the movie theaters andwill create more interest in playing pool. My onlyreservation was the language in the movie, but evenso I would recommend it.

Matt Jacoby, Dr Cue Billiards, Shoreline, WAI think Poolhall Junkies was better than The Hustlerand as good as The Color of Money. The moviehad great hustles and a real sense of humor. Theacting was real, plot was good and depicted the lifeof a hustler. I think it will create a real interest inplaying pool and should do well in the theaters. Ididnt like the guns in the pool room and the violencebut would recommend the movie.

Ron Springman, Cues Billiards, Portland, ORI thought Poolhall Junkies was as good as The Colorof Money. The action in the movie was fast andfurious, depicting the life of a hustler. The acting andplot seemed real to life. The movie should createmore interest in playing pool among young peopleand I would recommend the movie. I thought therewas too much profanity and violence in the moviethough.

Jeff Robertson, Dr Cue Billiards, Shoreline, WAI think with the great plot and the excellent cast ofactors that Poolhall Junkies will take off. The moviewas better than The Color of Money and as goodas The Hustler. Room Owners Rate Poolhall Junkies

Kirsten Finney, Renton, WAI rated Poolhall Junkies better than both The Hustler

and The Color of Money. I dont really play pool and it kept my interest. Thestory line was more than just about pool. The actors were realistic, the plotgood and I think it will create interest in playing pool. The only thing I didntlike was the swearing, but I know thats kinda the way it is.

Sofia Ivlieva, Beaverton, ORAs a non-player, I liked Poolhall Junkies and I think it will create moreinterest, especially when you know the game. I really liked the way thegame of pool was presented. The plot was good and the actors believable.I think it will do good in the theaters.Bob Manchester, Spokane, WAPoolhall Junkies is as good as both The Hustler and The Color of Money.I liked the acting and the little scams the best in the movie. The music wasgreat and I think the theme song will be a Top 10! The only thing I didnt likewas the swearing, but I would recommend the movie.

From: Luke Riches, Matchroom SportEurope 12 - 9 USATeam Europe have won the Mosconi Cup for the first time in seven years on anemotional night of high drama at Bethnal Greens York Hall. It was Steve Davis whosunk the winning 9-ball after his arch pool nemesis Earl Strickland missed criticalball in the 21st game of the tournament. That was a cue for mass bedlam as the six hundred or so pool fans at the atmosphericvenue raised the roof.In what was a battle of cuesports giants, Steve Davis opened the proceedings inwhat was the final game and played a nice snooker with no pot available after thebreak. Strickland though, escaped from it and then Steve crazily missed the 1 balltrying to edge it into the pack and with ball in hand Strickland cleared.Earl broke and ran in the next to put the USA 2 - 0 ahead and things were lookingominous for Davis. He broke well, however, in the next and with the layout looking good, Davis ran outto get off the mark and within a rack of Earl.A horror scratch by Strickland in the fourth put Davis back at the table. He took the1 and 2 but left himself a tough one on the pink 5. Steve used the rest and althoughhe made the shot he had no chance to pot the 5 and played safe.Earl had a chance to pocket the five via the rail but missed too leaving the five on.Davis took it and cleared a tough layout to go 2 - 2.In the next Davis got the crowd going as he stroked home his break shot andcleared the table to out the Europeans 3 - 2 to the good.Strickland made a ball on the break but missed a long cut on the 2 ball into a blindpocket. Davis leapt out of his chair.Steve miscued though, on a straight orange 5 to give it back to Strickland and heran out to make it 3 - 3.Davis broke off in the seventh and two balls dropped and left him a nice shot on the2-ball. From there he took the rack with a calm, methodical clearance. With Europe on the hill, Strickland stepped up to the plate to break. Two ballsdisappeared but the problem ball was the orange 5 which was locked up on the railwith the 8 ball. He took it though after gaining perfect position. From there Stricklandcleared to go 4 - 4.With Davis breaking for the Mosconi Cup, he had no shot on the 2 ball after the 1went down. He pushed out and Strickland trapped him in a snooker. Davis scratchedmaking a table length bank shot to give Earl ball in hand. Earl dished but ran out ofposition on the green 6.There was a hush as he cued up on a tight cut into the top right hand pocket and aroar went up as Strickland missed. With three balls separating Europe from a historic Mosconi Cup victory Steve Davissteered them home as he nudged in the 6, put the black 8 into the same pocketand then came down the table for that historic 9 ball.

I made three balls on the next break but got tied up behind the four.Opting to push out I played safe and gave Gadwell a difficult long shot thatrequired a deft touch. He made the shot, and miraculously maneuveredthe cue ball in perfect position for the next shot.

I sat down in my chair and said to Charley, here we go again.Charley said without expression, maybe.Gadwell stroked the five and followed through. The moment he

shot I knew he was in trouble. At the last instant, he jerked up. The fiveheaded straight for the hole, but missed just enough to catch the tip of thecorner pocket. Like a bouncing ball it rebounded to the other side of thepocket, caught the tip and bounced right back to the other side again. Onlythis time, it bounced beyond the pocket and stalled directly in front.

I dont believe it, I exclaimed.Breakthrough, Charley said.Resisting the urge to rush the shot, I took my time, holed the five,

and ran the rack. Forty minutes later, I pocketed the nine on the break andcompleted a five rack run. The momentum had shifted dramatically, and Iwas in dead stroke.

Stick! Tools Spinard yelled, then jerked his head so that Gadwellraised his eyebrows and crossed over to where Spinard was sitting.Spinard turned Gadwell toward him and muttered something under hisbreath. Gadwell listened intently, then canted his head and nodded withclenched lips. He glanced toward Russell Case, then said something toSpinard and crossed over to the Thin Man.

The room became still. Outside a car flew by and combined withthe street laterns to light up the swirling ice storm. Across the street, treelimbs heavy laden with ice bowed low to the street. I wondered about Pop,where he was and how he was doing. The furnace cycled and I felt a hotrush of air in my face. I watched as the ceiling fans pushed the warm airdownward.

Crossing over to the counter, I ordered a cup of coffee then saunteredover to Charley Sturgis.

Whats going on?He crunched his nose, and lifted his eyes then shrugged and said,

maybe they want to raise the bet.I leaned my cue stick against the chair between my legs then leaned

back and took a deep breath. The Thin Man emerged out of the pack. Forming a hookem horns

with his right hand, he shoved them to his mouth and whistled loudly. The crowd quieted, the room became still.Case, with shoulders back, took in a large volume of air then yelled

out over the crowd, Mr. Gadwell and Mr. Spinard have conceded the match!I froze.Charley Sturgis clenched his fist, drew it down to his chest and

calmly yelped Whoopee, in his loudest voice. Then he extended hishand in my direction. I took it and squeezed gently then sat back in mychair and sighed. Bettors from every direction rushed to collect theirwinnings.

I was alone. The Thin Man, almost lost within the crowd, glanced over a shoulder

and gave me a thumbs up. Doc Keating were gonna call ya! He yelled.Grinning so that his aged cheeks gleamed, he added, Sliced the Stick uplike a friggin surgeon!

Eddy Cooksey elbowed through the crowd and came over to shakemy hand. Incredible, Carter, he remarked nasally. Thin Mans right. Cuthim up like a surgeon all right. Piece by piece.

I laughed then turned to Charley Sturgis and said, can you believeit, Charley?

A breakthrough, he replied. And a new name, too.Doc Keating.I chuckled and replied, that too, Charley. Eyeing the rest of the

room, I leaned in and said, think Ill scoot out while I have the chance. Tellthe Thin Man for me, will you, Charley?

Yep.Reaching down, I picked up my cue case and slipped my cue stick

inside.Carter, Charley said abruptly.Yeah, I replied, my head down.Might want to look across the room.I looked up. Suddenly my eyes fixed on the familiar trench coated

figure facing me.It was Pop. Staring at me as though Id just won the world series,

smiling from ear to ear.Pop! I shouted. Launching from the chair I rushed around the

tables toward him. He opened his arms and embraced me as I drewcloser.

You were watching, Pop? I asked.Yes, he replied. Pause. Your mama would have been proud,

Son.I thought about you, Pop. And Mama.He leaned back, held me by the elbows and looked straight at me

and said. She always said it takes guts and smarts to win. You got both.Pause. Time for a cup of coffee?

Sure, Pop. Now?Nod. Ready?I nodded. As we turned and headed for the exits he put his arm

over my shoulder and squeezed my neck. When we got outside, we flippedour collars up, pocketed our hands and headed for the car.

Radio said its the coldest day of year, he remarked.Uh huh, I replied, opening the car door. But somehow I thought, the cold didnt matter. Two breakthroughs

had just occurred in my life. One on the tables, one with my father. Andthat was enough for any person in one night.

Kim DavenportSuffers Eye Injury

from: Billiards DigestAt the end of October, veteran 9-ball star Kim Davenport was competing inthe UPA Atlanta Open, fighting for a spot on the U.S. team for the upcoming

Mosconi Cup in London. Today, the 47-year-old Modesto, Calif., pro is fighting forhis professional pool player life.Davenport, the 1990 Billiards DigestPlayer of the Year and a many-times protour champion, has only limited vision inhis right eye, the result of a freak golfaccident at a local driving range on Nov.16. His chances of regaining full vision inthe eye are uncertain.According to Davenport, an avid golferwho sports a 3 handicap, a lawn mower

kicked up a golf ball, which ricocheted off a metal post next t0 Davenportspractice tee, and struck him directly in the eye. It knocked me right to the ground, said Davenport. I didnt know whathappened. I couldnt see a thing, and I was scared to death. An ambulancecame and rushed me to the hospital.A CT scan eliminated concern over possible bleeding in the brain, butsevere bleeding left Davenport completely blind in the eye for more than aweek. The doctors dont know what will happen, said Davenport, who hasregained some of the vision in his eye since the accident. They dont think Ill ever get 100 percent of my vision back, and theyvediscussed a cornea transplant. They wont really know what the optionsare until January. The setback comes during a period in which Davenport had regained aspot in the mens top 10 rankings. Hes posted four top-10 finishes in 2002,including the Sands Regency title in June. Ive been playing well, Davenport said. But if I never get to play poolagain, Ive had 17 great years. Its just a bad roll. A nice sunny day thatwent dark.

I would like to use this opportunity to explain my position on just why theseactivities should be considered cheating.Savers - A saver is when two players prior to a match or a tournamentagree to compensate each other some amount up to a split either after thematch or after the tournament. Tournament savers occur when playersrecognize that the draw has left them in favorable positions or positionswhere the involved players dont meet further out in the tournament.Splits - At the end of the event, players agree to split 1st & 2nd. Thisappears to only affect those players, but in reality an event is made up bymany players, some of who have not attained a skill level high enough thatanother player would be willing to extend the same opportunity to.Fixes - Predetermined matches fall in this category. We are all aware thatBoxing, Horseracing, and major sports such as Basketball and Baseballhave been victimized by conspiratorial acts by the players. In sports thatare above the radar like football and those mentioned, the public relationsfallout can be extreme to the point that large financial losses by teams andeven local economies can be attributed to them. This is particularly insidiousbehavior when spectators as well as other players are encouraged to beton the side, which is frequently done, and in my judgment occurred in ourtournament.Drugs - This is an obvious form of cheating. Players use drugs to eitherenhance their performance or settle their nerves which is a form ofperformance enhancement. All the issues mentioned above are certainly not a complete set. I am alsowell aware that this may sound funny coming from Tony Annigoni, thesubject of Playing Off the Rail. I would like to point out that in my extendedpool career, on occasion, I have engaged in all of these scams. It is

sing, dance, recite or tell a story. Jimmy hadone I could never forget. A pool player missedchurch every Sunday to play pool so he refusedheaven and went to the Devil who welcomed himwith open arms and took him to a room with 100of the most beautiful tables he had ever seencovered with Simonis cloth and thousands ofspectators seated in Opra chairs. Of course hechallenged the first one he saw. The spectatorsaid, Do you see any balls or cues? No, saidthe new arrival. Thats the hell of it.The most unforgettable match I saw Jimmy playwas against Everett Andrews at my Unclesroom, Waynes Billiard Academy. Jimmy hadbeen at Oregon State University on an exhibitionthe night before and was having a severe gallbaldder attack and Everett was a top player. Theyplayed pretty close for a while until Everett gotoff a run of eighty and Jimmy just began to lookworse and worse. Everett thought, If I beat CarasI might never hustle a game as long as I live. Sohe left Jimmy wide open. Jimmy ran about fiveand missed. Everett ran the rack and just brokethe next rack wide open missing the 15-ball.Jimmy struggled to get out of the chair and ran afew and missed.Everett, dont embarrass me, finish it off. Everettdid just that. Jimmy excused himself, went tothe Mens Room and got sick, washed his handsand face and came back to put on the greatesttrick and fancy shot show he had ever done. Hetook the time to show the players the finer pointsof the game. He spent over an hour and a halfextra that night. He went over to Everett and Iand said, Thanks for the game. I cant be champevery day.Everett replied, Jimmy, you were a champion

today as you are every day. I may never getanother game in Portland but thanks for the gameand the experience. When Jimmy was raised to the BCA Hall ofFame, there were two chairs empty at the headtable with all the Big Shots. Jimmy and Margewere having dinner with two unknowns at the backof the banquet hall. When they called for Jimmy,he stood up and said, Im back here with mybest friends Pat & Brigid Sheehan from Portland.Marge and Brigid and myself did the best cheers,a hip-hip-hooray when Jimmy accepted theaward. The cheers came from the back of thehall.Jimmy, I know that you will make it through thePearly Gates. There will be balls and cues foryou to show the Big Boys how its done and I willbe there to put the Simonis cloth on for you. Please God.Your life long friend,Pat Sheehan, The Man of the Cloth

anyone other than my friends from out of town. Those 2 or 3 times were either to my roommateor one of my best friends in town and I dont thinkany of these people would confirm this behavior.Meanwhile back at the ranch.

As a result of removing the good playersfrom the rooms, I have witnessed an obviousdrop in the talent pool. When players are forcedto set their sights on beating a couple of B ratedjetters or overrated league players there is nowonder the whole level of competition woulddrop. If you want to be a league player, feel free, and no tournament player or gambler will everhold that against you, but at least treat thesepeople with the respect deserved by someonewho has dedicated themselves enough to getthat good in the first place. Believe it or not itdoes take dedication. Seize these asopportunities to learn, not lose. You have to knowhow to lose long before learning how to win. Thereis one more underlying factor to this that all theB players cannot even relate to. The fact thatthis attitude by certain small groups has causednumerous players to hang it up all together and Imyself have entertained this thought over the pastfew years. I went to the point of not even touchinga cue for over a year, but then I decided to onceagain reach out to another venue where talent isnot out of place, but rather appreciated. By allmeans this has proved to be blessing to mygame being that I get very little time to practicethese days it helps greatly to only play againsttop level players. Sort of keeps your mind in theright place if you will. In the same way that thissort of treatment is flattering, as some wouldhave you believe, it is detrimental to theprogression of pool into the mainstream. Whatwould basketball be without MJ, Magic, Bird andwhat would golf be without Michelson, Duvall, and

Woods? Not very exciting, huh? Well pool alreadystruggles with its skill being under appreciatedby the laymen. Why would anyone who caresabout the game want to do anything to deface it?I mean really ego can only go so far. These sameestablishments that have barred the good playersmight draw 2% to 5% of their annual from pool inthe first place, but they would have you believethat if 4 or 5 different players dont show up everyFriday night that they will go under. On the otherhand at least 50 to 60% of their income is derivedfrom gaming machines and they seem to nothave much of a conscience about that either, soI guess that alone tells you what kind of moralswe are dealing with in the first place. One guy Iknow in particular who was not only a good poolplayer, but also a very avid machine gambler, spent somewhere between 20k and 30k a yearin the machines at this one place where we allplay pool. Goes without saying he mightexperience some personal strife from this typeof behavior, which he did, and do you think theowner of the establishment would stop enablinghim in anyway. No, instead he extended a verygenerous amount of credit to this guy repeatedly, allowing him to get in far over his head, then hetells him you cant play in my pool tournamentsuntil you make this debt right, but would still allowhim to come in to play the machines. What ahumanitarian. These are exactly the kind of peoplewho will be weeded from the pool world in time. Its not like we need or want them involved in ourpassion anyway. Cheese says 1000 words so Iam being strangled, but good luck and safetravels this season to each and every lover ofthe game and happy holidays to all. Keep a tightrack!Thank you for your time,T.R. along with Accu-Stats Video Productions and sponsors that we acquire. How long will they work with us if the perception becomes apparent thatour matches arent on the square? Finally, let me say that I am personally disappointed in any playersthat think this behavior is acceptable, as well as for them.Further, I am disappointed in the billiard industry for leaving thecompetitive side of the game in a condition where it makes moresense to some players to engage in these activities than just to playstraight. Last but certainly not least, I am most disappointed in myselffor not having enough ability to positively influence the players tomake better decisions for the long-term success of our sport. Butguess what? I am not done trying.Regards, Tony Annigoni
