Some amazing summer weather contributed to the light turnout of 47 players. There was a noticeable absence of players from the Portland area and many of the Canadian players remained in Canada to play in the Canadian 9- Ball Championships. For those who did attend, the tournament had a great payout with first place receiving $1,700! To those players who stayed home, you really missed out on a great tournament, that first place prize money could have been yours!!! City Lights added $1,125 and The Break added $2,000 to the tournament making the total payout $5,475. Andrea Saenz-Maes, tournament director, lengthened the races for the tournament in order to make the players “work” for their prize money. The A side races went to 9, the B side to 7, money rounds were a race to 9 with the finals being a single race to 13. Complaints, which normally accompany any tournament were not heard. City Lights recently recovered their tables and made their usually tight pockets larger, which helped the tournament run smoothly and complaint free. D”C”A: Are you going to be issuinga press release?Mark: Yes, there should be onecoming out today (see page 22). Thisis an extremely emotional issue. Itdivided the pool communitynationwide and it’s sad. I don’tpersonally have a grudge againstanyone or organization. I’m going towelcome anyone back to theWestern BCA. We need to just worktogether and continue to have greattournaments.D”C”A: I agree one hundredpercent.Mark: I’m looking forward to makingthe association better than it hasbeen and the tournaments betterthan they have been. That’s wheremy focus is and I’m going to try andpull the players back together. I’mconcerned that what is circulatingout there is negative and reflectspoorly on the association.D”C”A: I don’t want to put anythingout there that’s going to make thepool players have anymisconceptions about anythingbecause I’m a player myself and itpains me not to be able to play whenI go out there to cover the event. Still,I don’t get a chance to embarrassmyself either. That was my firstquestion, which you more or lesswent into. The biggest question forthe players is are you going to beholding the regionals at LincolnCity?Mark: We have a contract withChinook Winds through 2007. GaryBenson contacted Chinook Windsto confirm that and asked for aproposal to extend that through2010. We also talked to GaryBenson, he is committed to runningour tournaments. The look and feelof the tournaments will be the samefor the players. I hope that thingswill be better. Instead of sayingthings will be the same, I’m hopingthey’ll be even better.D”C”A: Are they going to be at thesame time during the year?Mark: Yes. Our next Novembertournament is the 3rd through the 7th,our 9-Ball tournament. Our 8-Ballis scheduled for March 1st throughthe 6th. Those are on track, thereare no changes there.D”C”A: Will you have the sameevents?Mark: Yes, nothing has changed. The same divisions will be available.Everything is the same. We don’tknow what the entry level will be.We expect it to be less because ofthe division. We’re going to beworking hard over the summer torecruit those players back.D”C”A: Then some players havegone over to the ACS?Mark: They have. Myunderstanding is there is a groupthat is forming a new association, planning to put on a tournament. AndI wish them luck. It will give playersan additional choice, but again if thatoccurs both tournaments will besmaller than what they have beenin the past. That might beunfortunate.

D”C”A: I tend to agree with thattoo, as long as they don’t try to holdthe tournaments in close proximityof each other.Mark: That’s going to be theirchoice. The members that may bedoing that are well aware of ourdates. It’s their choice to pick theirdates. I think that we have a proventrack record for producing a goodtournament. I’m sure we will have a

fairly sizeable field at the tournamentand I think that players when theyleave are going to be happy andreassured that Western BCA is stillon track.D”C”A: That’s good because Iknow the players are concernedabout it and it’s important to them. Iknow the players that I’ve talked to,the majority of them would rathergo to regionals than even to Vegas. And to the credit of the WesternBCA, I’ve been to a lot of bigtournaments whether its VNEA orBCA, it’s the best that I’ve seen. I’veseen them as large, maybe a littlelarger and the Western BCA isexcellent.Mark: Thank you. I appreciate thatcompliment. The previous board ofdirectors has had a lot to do withmaking that happen. We are hopingto continue that on.D”C”A: Are there going to be anychanges in the organization?Mark: There are no plans. Wehave a new vice president andpresident. The secretary is a bitdivided, she basically aligned withthe ACS players but felt aresponsibility not to walk away atthis point. Other than that, we havea meeting scheduled July 11th, aboard meeting to get things rollingwhere we’ll be planning ourtournament, thinking of the fall. Allboard members and playermembers are welcome to attendthe meeting and voice theirconcerns but there are nofundamental changes to rules, requirements or anything. We’regoing to keep as much the sameas we can for one reason, to assurethe players that nothing is changing. We are going to try and improve theraces that people were complainingabout, short races, scheduling. We’re going to try and improvethose things, try to make it a betterexperience for the players butfundamentally the events will be thesame, the same tournamentdirector.D”C”A: What about the referees. Ithink they are the heart and soul ofkeeping the tournament going andkeeping the arguments controlled –you know everybody looks at a shotdifferently, even though it’s thesame shot and sees it differently.Mark: The referees have decidedto explore their own organizationthat they can hire out to the BCA,APA, the ACS, TAP, whoever and

be independent of any leaguesystem. Hopefully that will keep thereferee program alive and healthy.I’m not sure where that will be overthe summer but I think once thereferees feel dedicated to the sport, they’ll want to avoid the politics. I willbe recruiting referees for thistournament and trying to have alarger staff than in the past.D”C”A: Are you at liberty to tell me

percentage wise who may bealigning which way?Mark: That is really difficult at thispoint to tell you. I don’t have a list ofwhich league voted which way, because there are multiple votesper league. As an example, there isa league in Salem, Oregon, who hasa league meeting tonight and theyare mostly interested in regionaltournaments. They were ACS at theSunday meeting and now they arereconsidering what the future holdsand maybe they should align withthe BCA to insure that they can goto the 9-Ball tournament in the fall.So even though they voted one waysome of these leagues and playersmay have a change of heart anddecide to change their alignment. It’s really hard to predict. If I had tomake a wild guess I’d say it’ssomewhere around 50/50. The voteat the meeting was fairly close. I’mnot sure that the vote reallyrepresents the entire membershipthough.D”C”A: I understand that. It’sprobably like a proxy system wherefor however many players you getso many votes?Mark: Yes, for each 30 players youget 1 player representative and I’msure many of the league operatorschose to bring player reps that aresympathetic to them or theirposition – not all of them did

because many of them were split.I’m not sure it really represents thefull membership.D”C”A: Basically what do youwant to say that can assure theplayers, besides what you’ve said, how the association’s going toprosper. How it’s going to remainthe same in a lot of different areasthat has already been successful?Mark: The main thing I want theplayers to know is that there are noreal changes to the Western BCA.The tournaments are still plannedas scheduled in the past. The proofwill be in the pudding, when theycome to the tournament I believethey will walk away with a muchbetter experience than they’ve hadin the past with better races, betterscheduling, better personal serviceby the tournament directors andassociation staff that is there for thetournaments. We are there to servethe players and our goal is to makeit the best experience we can forthem.D”C”A: You said there’s a meetingJuly 11th?Mark: July 11th at the Pied PiperPizza as always.D”C”A: Are there going to be moredecisions made? You’ll know aboutwhether the other leagues will bealigning with the BCA?Mark: The items on the agenda forthe meeting are basically going tobe addressing the short races in thepast, making sure they areadequate for the players. We needto purchase some equipment. Muchof the equipment from theassociation belonged to boardmembers of the association andunfortunately many of those are withthe ACS. So we have things to pickup and to arrange for. We have thebylaws in the works (in the past thatwere never completed), changesthat govern rules for the tournament. How the association should operate. Those were never finished so thosewill be on the(Avlon Interview continued on page 23)

WBPPA Players Speak OutA request to League Players and Operators was sent out to respond on the BCA and

ACS Leagues. Both Sides were contacted and these are their responses

I am writing in response to the last meetingthe WBPPA had on June 11, 2004 todiscuss what league we wanted join sincethe BCA was sold to Mark Griffin. Ourchoices were the new BCA, or the newACS led by former BCA league top guyJohn Lewis. When the vote was done itwas 36-34 for the new BCA (for profit). Idid not vote for the BCA, but that is theway it goes.I have two complaints about this decision, and the first one is the people that votedfor the BCA do not know the facts. Theysay why should we jump ship, if they thinkabout it we are jumping ship by going withthe new BCA. I have been a BCA membersince 1995 and John Lewis had been thetop guy for the BCA leagues for manyyears and has the experience and mytrust. Mark Griffin tried to hire him to runhis league (he said no), then the BCA firedhim because he was standing up for theplayers. This sounds like the guy I want incharge of the league I play in. Then youhave Mark Griffin (who is he) a businessowner that is good at his business. Whatexperience does he have at runningleagues, who is on his board? There aretoo many I don’t knows, and wait and seesfor me to take that chance. My next complaint is the way people treateach other at these meetings. For examplethe way people treated Bill Mildenberger (Iwill not mention names, but you know whoyou are). They called him a liar, keptinterrupting him when he spoke, keptbugging how certain things needed to beworded. Tried to discredit him because hewas in favor of the ACS.Bill Mildenberger and Judy Griffith have putin a lot of hours and years and a lot ofother people have also to build the WBPPAinto a great league and some of the finesttournaments in the nation. So to youpeople that have been around 2 or 3 years,or the ones with private agendas maybeyou should walk a mile in their shoesbefore you start slamming the people thatworked so hard to bring you so much, andwhen you’re at it GROW UP.

Steve Peterson

My name is Scott McComas. I own Jammer’sBar & Grill in Salem, Oregon. Regarding therecent controversy pertaining to ACS asopposed to BCA. My personal preferencewould be to play for ACS. That would be myfirst preference, my second preference wouldbe to be dual sanctioned. John Lewis hasbeen an absolute asset to the best of myopinion and/or knowledge to the BCA in thepast as well as to the pool players. I have agreat deal of respect for his integrity, knowledge and just overall industry-widerespect for him. His staff was always highlythought of as well.Pertaining to the meeting, I would have to saythat it was like a bunch of school children, squabbling and throwing mud against the wallto see what would stick. Bill Mildenberger andJean Bartholomew were champions for thepool players to the best of my knowledge.I’ve always enjoyed an extremely comfortablerelationship with both persons. They’veresponded to my needs on many differentoccasions and have done so in a friendly, professional and knowledgeable manner. Tohave those two people drug through the mudseems to me just a bit ridiculous. To bethreatened with lawsuits if indeed a vote doesnot go one way is intimidating. Supposedlythis is a democracy and I don’t think therewas anything democratic about that meeting, whatsoever. And the people that stood in thecorners and slung arrows, knowing that whatthey were saying was not true, should berightfully ashamed of themselves.Bill and Jean will walk away with their headsheld high rightfully so. I think that the properthing to do is for ACS to agree to dualsanctioning system because it’s in the bestinterest of the players. BCA is going tobecome for profit, ACS supposedly is goingto remain a non-profit organization, built onthe same standards, principles and rules asthe old BCA with some minor changes andfluctuations. I vote ACS first and dualsanctioning second. And once again I wouldjust say shame on those people at thatmeeting. They must have had to go homeand take some sort of antacid because theyseemed very bitter.

Scott McComas

Thank you for your interviews surrounding the changesrevolving around the BCA/ACS.The Mark Griffin interview in particular underlines someof the fundamental elements either missing ormisunderstood which are leaving the game of pool inthe financial dust while the likes of tennis and golfweekly draw untold millions to the pockets of playersaround the world. For example: The sales of rights to the name and/orlogo “BCA” whether permanent or temporary, completely dilutes, if not eliminates the ability tostrengthen it, promote it, market it, solicit serioussponsorship funds around it. How can the BCAseriously present “exclusive rights” to a sponsor whenyou have adulterated or watered down the quality orstrength of your “Mark”. This is troubling because itis, or was, a fairly significant organization on thiscontinent with growing influence.I recently competed in Las Vegas in an attempt tobetter understand the industry and why the gamedraws such small purses for its professionals. I havecome to know a few pros and I am saddened thatthey were unfortunately only playing for a top prize of$15,000 at the Vegas tournament.I know there’s the potential for enormous growth tothe benefit of players so I’ll keep digging to figure outhow we can affect positive change in the broaderconsciousness with respect to the greatest game.I’m now retired so I have to the time for such endeavor.Keep up the good work. All the best.

James Baroux

Cindy Doty“Why fix what isn’t broke” — Our board worked so hard tomake all the regional tournaments run assmoothly as they could ... They put a lot ofhard work into it with nothing back in return. It’s so unfortunate that it couldn’t of keptgoing ... Just because the BCA decided tosell the league ... really doesn’t meananything to me, except that someone putup some hard earned money to buy it ... I have a very heavyopinion about the “For Profit and Non-Profit” issue ... which Iwill not elaborate on ... bottom line being, after a lot of research... It’s not an issue ... at all ... What counts ... is how we aretreated in the future. I’ve been very disheartened with theway the ACS has handled themselves ... and I’ve been veryimpressed with the way Mark Griffin with BCA has handledhimself. I’ve been a BCA player for many years and it’sabsolutely the best tournament ever run in Vegas...I think weall need to fight for it and keep it going for many more years.Thank You.

Jean BartholomewSunday, June 13, at 1 pm theWBPPA board met to make theirdecision on staying with the BCAleague system, which was recentlysold to Mark Griffin, or to join thenewly formed ACS (AmericanCueSports). It was a really ugly meeting and a certain group, pro-BCA were there with the only agenda but to make sureit stayed that way. It did. Before the Sec/Treas. couldread the financial report, it started with interruptions ofOut of Order, to the point of being totally ridiculous. Itcontinued with everything and anything being challenged.Bill Mildenberger, (President of the Assn), tried to makehis report on his findings at Las Vegas meetings andwas continuously verbally attacked and challenged.Under these circumstances he did very well keepingsome semblance of order. In my opinion, it was shamefuland people guilty of this tactic should really take a goodlook at themselves. This association, the WBPPA hashelped pool immensely and made it respectable to goto the pool hall or bar and play leagues with your wife, girlfriend, etc. They started a Regional Tournament atthe Oregon Coast to almost rival the National 8-ball inLas Vegas. It has grown to over a 2000 membership in10 years time. Now this is all changed. Everything is split and someleagues are staying with the local BCA faction and someare going with the ACS with talk of forming another localassociation to affiliate with the National ACS. TheNational ACS is another non-profit entity, whereas theBCA will be solely owned and controlled by Mark Griffinand be for profit. Supposedly both will operate exactlyas the former BCA did, at least in the beginning. The vote went to staying with the BCA, by two votes. Some of the folks attending this meeting were ecstaticand others bummed out.My personal feelings aside, I hope the averagerecreational player doesn’t suffer from all this. Pool isnow respectable and lets try to keep it that way.Billiards popularity has gained in leaps and bounds inthis area as it has across the nation. I guess we’ll justhave to wait and see.

by: R JCanyonville, Oregon – Saturday, June 19th, began with eight APA 8-BallTeam Division Champions from Josephine and Jackson Counties, mergingon the Seven Feathers Casino/Convention Center to compete for a slot inthe upcoming APA Nationals being held at the Riviera Hotel/Casino in LasVegas, Nevada. Those eight teams represented the following local Taverns

and BilliardParlors: TheAlibi Tavern,The OldBarn, TheB r e a kRoom, The“G” StreetBar & Grilland TheCedarwoodSaloon.E v e r y o n ewas pumpedand heartswere racingas thef i g u r a t i v estarting gunwent off.

Each and everyteam had workedhard to achieve thislevel and a chanceto compete in theNationals is theultimate prize. Therounds pastpainfully slow ascheers came fromsome teams andsad faces droppedfor others, but theapplause went outfor all ands p o r t s m a n s h i pwas as high as itcould possibly be. After four grueling rounds there were three teams left toreturn on Sunday, June 20th for the final battles. The, so far, undefeated “Hope’s Bad Boys” watched as “The Ball Breakers”

squared off against“The Royal Z”,each with one loss.It was anawesome displayof concentrationand team supportwith the winpossibly going ineither direction but“The Ball Breakers”out of The BreakRoom had to settlefor third place witha money awardand Bronze toned

medallions. “The Royal Z” from The Old Barn now had to beat “Hope’sBad Boys” twice to take first. Every shot in every game of each match hadeveryone on the edge of their seats. But “Hope’s Bad Boys” had no intention

of giving the slot upto anyone else andthey took theirmatches for thewin 1, 2, 3. Thesecond placeteam also got amoney award andsilver tonedmedallions to holdonto as a reminderof this very specialday. The Break Roomis bursting with

pride as they present the very first 8-ball team from Southwest Oregon toget this honor. “Hope’s Bad Boys” received trophies, patches, gold tonedmedallions and $3,250 to help them finance their trip to Las Vegas in midAugust. The team has already started to plan some fund raisers to pay forthe rest of their trip. This team of veryclose friends wasamong the first tojoin the league.Last spring theywere the very first tobecome DivisionChampions. Thenight they struggledfor their Divisiontitle, one teammember, JeremyHughes wase m o t i o n a l l ystruggling, at a local hospital, with the birth of his daughter. Cell phoneskept the team and Jeremy informed as to each other’s progress and bothwere victorious. It isapropos that Jeremybe the one to shoot inthe final 8-ball to securethe RegionalChampionship for histeam, on Father’s Day,as one year old Trista, now the team mascot, looked on and clapped.“Hope’s Bad Boys willbe competing in theNationals for $25,000.Good luck guys. The SouthwestOregon, APA has justbarely started their 9-Ball Divisions so not enough teams to earn a place inLas Vegas, this year, but Division Champions did compete for trophies, money awards and medallions. Fourth Place was given to “The Fellowshipof the 9-Ball” out of the Break Room. Third Place went to The Alibi Tavern’s“No Alibis”. Second went to The Hong Kong Dragons who put up a valiantfight and the 2004 9-Ball Regional Champions are “The Barnstormers” outof The Old Barn. The Regional event also hosts an array of mini tournaments that are opento both APA and non-APA shooters. If you missed out this year, be sure tojoin the fun next May. For information on your becoming a part of theseexciting 8-Ball and 9-Ball challenges and getting a chance at the Las VegasNationals, contact the Southwest Oregon, APA office at 541-582-0821.

Keep Strokin’ - Sarge

Over & Under

This month’s Artistic shot is from the prop/novelty/ Special Arts Disciplineand has a Degree of Difficulty (DOD) of 9. To set this shot up place thebridge on the rail tops as diagramed. Place F ball’s edge, closest to bridge, flush with the back edge of the bridge. The D ball is centered between thepocket points. The cue ball and F ball can be placed anywhere in the 1 by1 diamond square area. The objective of this shot is to shoot the cue ballwith a jump draw stroke into F ball. The F ball goes under the bridge andthe cue ball jumps over the bridge and then draws back under the bridge toD ball. You must pocket both object balls as pocket letter designated. Ascratch is allowed and the cue ball may contact the long rail on the wayback to D ball. Here are a couple of tips to help you execute this skill shot. I place myF ball 1 & 1/4 balls distance away from the long rail. Make sure that the ballgoes underneath the bridge. If it doesn’t, put something under the bridgehead to raise it. I line up the cue ball with the F ball so that I’m barelycutting the F ball to the left. Now because I’m cutting the F ball to the leftthe cue ball will come back to the right as it draws back towards the Dpocket. I place my cue ball about 1 & 1/2 balls width away from the shortrail. The elevation of my cue for the jump draw stroke is about 35 degrees. My basic bridge that I use for this shot is on top of the short rail. I use amedium hard stroke for this shot. In my opinion I think BCA Hall of FamerLou “ Machine Gun” Butera executed this shot better than anyone. Youshould get the owners permission before you attempt this shot. Nextmonth’s Artistic shot will be from the Draw Discipline and has a (DOD) of10, a great skill shot. Don’t miss it.

A Position Drill With DiceBy: Bob Jewett of the SFBA

July 2004www.onthebr eaknews.comPage 8

Sometimes it’s hard tomaintain your interest indoing drills even thoughthey provide the bestway to correct your faultsand improve your skills. Here is a drill that is morelike a game, and you caneven play it as achallenge game againsta friend. You’ll need a pairof dice. The goal is to perfectyour no-cushion positionplay. The object ballalways goes back to thespot shown, the cue ball

is in hand, and you have to send the cue ball to aspecific spot on the table without using thecushions. To decide where you have to send the cue ball, roll the dice. The first die sets how far along theshort-rail direction your goal will be, with the sidecushion you’re near being 1 and the far sidecushion being 5. The second die says how farup the length of the table you need to go to. Thediamond before the side pocket is 1 and the farcushion is 6.If the first die comes up 6, there is a special ruleto go to the locations that are even with the spot,as shown. If you roll double sixes, change to theother side of the table and roll again.Shown are two position plays that you might maketo send the cue ball to 1,5 and to 4,1. To sharpenyour focus on where you want the cue ball to goto, place the dice at the target point. Consider a

shot a success if you get the cue ballwithin a hand-span (nine inches for me)of the goal. As you gain moreexperience, you can tighten up therequirement. The cue ball is shown starting from thesame place for the two examples, butyou’re free to move it to make the shoteasier. The angle shown — roughly ahalf ball shot — is a good balancebetween thinness which gets morespeed on the cue ball and fullnesswhich makes it easier to draw and havemore control. But you’ll discover those things whiletrying the drill as long as you tryvariations of cue ball placement. You can play the drill as a two-playergame. The first player places a coinas the position target and shoots thefirst shot, leaving the cue ball inposition. The second player uses asecond cue ball (or object ball, ifnecessary) and tries to end up closerto the coin. It’s OK to hit youropponent’s ball away from the target ifyou have that much control.Variations: Play one or two cushionsinstead of no cushion. Try otherpositions for the object ball or use thedice to determine the position of theobject ball as well. Try a fixed locationfor the cue ball, and see which of the locationsyou can get to. (As shown, I think you won’t beable to go to 6,1.) Try to visit the spots by the railin order, and see how many you can do in a row. OTB

This was the NWPA’s secondtournament at McQ’s. And the eventwent so smoothly, McQ’s and theNWPA are currently in negotiationsfor 2005.Tournament Director Chris Rogershad all 24 players up and running by10am Saturday morning, playingdown to the final six by the end ofthe day Saturday.

Kerry Impson, winner of theNWPA’s last tour stop at TheCue Ball in Salem, OR, had hersights set once again on topspot. With tour points leaderHsin Huang out of the country, this was Impson’s chance tomove into first place. DespiteHuang’s absence, the road tothe finals was tough. Impsonmade here way through the “A”-side to play Martha Hartsell ofJunction City, OR for the point. In a nail biter, Hartsell defeatedImpson 7-6 for the hot seat, forcing her to play anothertough match against CindyDoty before making it to thefinal.Hartsell made her way to the

Top honors went to ComePlourde from Galloway, BC, Johnny Siefke from Libby MT finished in second place, third place went to Jim Allen of Ronan, MT.Saturday morning saw the start of a long day of pool as we whittled down the fieldof players in both the men’s and women’s brackets, in order to set the stage forSunday. TABLE RESTORATIONIn the past month lots of excitement on thehome front. I finished the job of putting togetherthe finishing touches on the Monroe table thatI talked about in the May issue. The rails werein terrible shape and sure enough the railswere short, not only the end rails like the OlyClub, but also the side rails. Since this tabledid not have the blinds we put on Brassrosettes. The last guy who restored the table

in Philadelphia had put matching veneer on the back side of the rails butmissed the size and filled all his mistakes and the damage from water onthe leg with a white epoxy and painted over it with a very close coloredpaint. For many years his short comings were not noticed but the tablewas in storage for a couple years and the epoxy didn’t like the temperaturechanges and began to crack. The owner Phil Scalley was moving back toBloomington, Illinois and wanted the table in excellent shape. We cut 1/8” off the back of the rails and left an 1/8 slot in the rail cap so wecould get an exact fit and it gave us a chance to repair all the inner damageto the rail core. We inserted 3/8” Brass tubing to set the pockets at theright height and filled the void with the epoxy and wood and redrilled thepocket bolt holes. We made up the size difference in the rails by adding 1/8” Brass plates tothe corner of the rails and shaped them so they fit the rail caps and polishedthem to match. I found an old name plate and polished it to match all thebrass fillings. The original slate was replaced some time ago with slatefrom a Liberty table (circa 1940-1945). Many of the lugs for the 5/16 railbolts were missing or stripped so we remanufactured some out of 3/8”pipe and tapped them with 5/16 x 20 thread and replaced. The work wentway beyond the estimate but Phil was so pleased with the work that he gotout the checkbook and even gave me a nice tip. We put the slate in a crateand the table is off to Bloomingdale, Illinois. I only regret that I won’t get tosee the finished product but Phil promised to send a picture.I have noticed that many tables made to copy the old timers have thatproblem with the lower part of the rail giving away because they do not putin the brass tube like the old Brunswick’s. Connelly and Olhausen tableshave this problem. I tried in the past to repair them with Bondo. I did the 9foot table at Ringlers with Bondo and a month later the pockets still jiggled. This time I took a 7/8” plow in the end of the rail and set in brass tubes.Pockets were never as tight. After 56 years of working on tables I am stilllearning something new every day.Now for the good part. I sold that Brunswick New Century Challenge to goto Bend. Again I got a big surprise. Someone had given this beautiful QuarterSawn Oak table a coat of grey paint which I thought was a grey wash coat, but some areas were painted with grey primer and what a job it was to getoff. I couldn’t sand much because the last guy had almost gone throughthe veneer. So four days of stripping we got down to the trouble spots thatthe primer was hiding.I really hate people who don’t respect the true gems they are working withand do so much damage. It’s bad enough that these old beauties have tofight nature with humidity changes, water damage, fires and sunlight, butso much of the damage is done by people who are so careless. The guyswho gage their skill by how fast they can recover a table or how strongthey are tightening the bolts. We just picked up a table that sat in an oldfarm house with a crack in the foundation and water that poured in. Whenwe got to the house to pick it up we had to wait for the sump pump to takeout 6” of water. I don’t know how many times it had been pumped out in thepast but the legs were destroyed. I was not turned away by what I sawbecause the table brought back old memories. Dad and I moved and setup this table in 1954 for Ron Harris’ dad. It came from the Odd Fellows Hallin Boring, Oregon and we rode in the O’Neill Transfer truck to set it up andnow it is going to Ron’s farm in Boardman. You know these pool tables last for generations. I love to see them passedon from generation to generation. Sometimes I lose sight of them for awhile but it is great to see these old friends again. Next month I will do astory on a table that I built in 1974. I just crated it for Max E Ross to send tohis house on Nantucket Island in Massachusetts. The neat part is that thefamily kept the original invoice and pictures of Great Grandfather and Fatherwith Max. The crating fees, shipping and finally the delivery and set up onthe Island are far more than the physical value, but the memories, prideand family tradition are well worth the dollars spent.

Sometimes the spray will give off a small glob of mist. Whenthis happens it will leave a small damp spot that will evaporatewithout leaving a mark. To prevent a damp spot just use thetowel before you wipe the table to pick up the glob. If you wipethe glob rather than picking it off the table you will end up witha wet spot. You should not have a problem with globing untilyou get to the last quarter of the can. (This is typical of allaerosol cans). When the can gets low, I tell people to cleanyour table at night. This allows the table plenty of time to dry. This is the only time that I shake the can while applying thecleaner. You do want to use all that is in the can.

(l to r) Richard Geiler (1st), Paul Potier (2nd), Dan Louie (3rd)

Geiler Wins the 9th Memorial Weekend TournamentBy: Rose Wilson & Ford

EVERETT, WAThis tournament wasn’t aslarge as most of them in thepast but that didn’t keep itfrom still having a very strongfield. (45) players fromeverywhere came to buttheads with each other tryingto be one of the final (12) tomake the money matches.Even though the field wasconsiderably short from the(64) players needed to fillthis tournament, Shotze’sstill added the full $1,000.From now on, our fields willhave to be considerablycloser to being full to have thefull amount added. It’s only fairthat the establishmentexpect participation from theplayers since the playersexpect the establishment to make good on their promises.Richard Geiler has participated within several Shotze’s tournaments overthe past (8) years. Even though he has finished in the money in all of thembut one, our last tournament, Spring Classic, was his best with a third. Iwould of thought that the (9) footers were Richard’s favorite table, butwatching him play on the (8) footers in this tournament just showed that heis an all around player that can play on anything thrown his way.Richard’s Saturday matches were: Linda Carter (7-3), a tough loss againstDan Louie (6-7), J D (7-3), and his last match Bill Irons (7-3) to bring himback for money matches on Sunday. Richard didn’t slow down on Sundaywith his wins being, Dick Trichler (8-2), Jim Conway (8-6), John Horsfall(8-5) and then a rematch against Dan Louie.Paul Potier, another great player who enjoys participating in Shotze’stournaments to pit his knowledge and skills against some of the best, hasalso had some luck in getting in the money brackets. His Saturday matcheswere: Mike Shannon (7-3), Kevin Ross (7-1) and Bill Andereozi (7-3). Whatis it with almost all matches being (7-3)???? Sunday had Paul matchingup against some tough opponents. They were Soud (8-6), Brady Gollan(8-7), and then the all important point match, Dan Louie (8-7).Paul had a brief moment of relaxation while Richard and Dan Louie went

up against each other onceagain. The match went nickand tuck and back and forthuntil Richard came out on topthis time (8-7). A very toughmatch. When the final match started,it was easy to see right fromthe start that it was going tobe like watching the gladiatorbeing eaten by the lion withRichard being that lion. Witha few table runs, a nine-ballbreak and a finish with aflourish, Richard defeatedPaul with a score of (9-2).Paul never had the chanceto get started. It was apleasure to watch one of thetop notch players actuallyplaying at their full capacityand not slowing down to seewho they just ran over.

Congratulations Richard. Please take the time to thank Darryl and Dave for putting on another greattournament. It is nice to see that establishments who take the time to careabout the quality of tournaments that are put on. Ford and I hope to seeyou all in the 4th Annual 8-Ball Championship the third weekend ofSeptember. We again, are looking for (64) members and hi-woman will beawarded. ACS National

Championshipsfrom: John Lewis, ACS Executive Director

Cecil Messer, President of the newly-formed American CueSports Alliance, has announced dates and locations for the 2004 ACS National 9-BallChampionships and 2005 ACS National 8-Ball Championships, both ofwhich are to be conducted in Reno, Nevada. The Silver Legacy Hotel &Casino will host the inaugural ACS National 9-Ball Championships,November 10-13, 2004, and the Silver Legacy will co-host - with the brandnew downtown Reno Events Center - the ACS National 8-BallChampionships, April 30 through May 7, 2005.The American CueSports Alliance will begin their physical operations onJune 1, 2004, as a new national governing body and non-profit nationalleague sanctioning body. Mr. Messer, in an address to over one hundredindependent league operators at the Stardust Convention Center in LasVegas on Tuesday, May 18, was pleased to note that “the ACS formationboard of directors, primarily composed of the elected Presidents of thevarious BCA state associations, had been working diligently behind thescenes to establish these events in the few weeks since forming theassociation.” Many former BCA-sanctioned leagues have committed tosanctioning with the new national non-profit association to ensure thesuccess of these inaugural championships.Website: www.americancuesports.org OTB

11. The first coin-operated billiard table was patented in 1903. The cost ofa game on the first pay-for-play table: one penny.

12. Before the invention of celluloid and other new-age plastics, billiardballs were made out of ivory. The elephants can thank their presentexistence on the invention of plastics. Because billiard balls had to be cutfrom the dead center of a tusk, the average tusk yielded only 3 to 4 balls.

13. Captain Mingaud, the inventor of the leather cue tip, was imprisonedfor political reasons during the French Revolution. With the help of a fellowprisoner, he was able to have a billiard table installed in his cell. It wasduring his incarceration that be became obsessed with the game, that hedevised and perfected his invention. His obsession became so intense, that at the end of his prison term, he actually asked for a longer sentenceso that he could complete his study of the game.

14. The world’s largest billiard hall was built during billiards’ “Golden Age”.“The Recreation”, a mammoth seven-story health spa, was a bustlingDetroit business in the 1920’s. It featured 103 tables, 88 bowling lanes, 20barber chairs, three manicuring stands, 14 cigar stands, a lunch counteron each floor, a restaurant that could seat 300, and an exhibition room withtheater seating, that could accommodate 250 spectators.

15. The Hustler was based on a novel by Walter Tevis. The novel, however, was based on a short story he had earlier submitted to Playboy. Before“The Hustler” was released, the “Philco TV Theater” aired an episode called“Goodbye, Johnny”, which bore an uncanny resemblance to the Playboyshort story. In it, Cliff Robertson portrayed the cocky young hustler, makingRobertson – not Newman – the original “Fast Eddie” Felson.

16. Marquetry – the art of making pictures or designs with thin slices ofwood, shell or other materials – has long enhanced the beauty of tablesand cues. The art form is hardly a recent development. It has been practicedin Egypt and the Orient for more than 3,000 years.

17. Many handicapped people have played the game of pool, but the storyof “Handless George” Sutton is truly one of inspiration. Born in 1870, Suttonlost both hands in a sawmill accident at the tender age of eight. Despitehis handicap (and long before the days of advanced prosthetics), he studiedmedicine and graduated from the University of Milwaukee. During hiscollege years, he took up the game of billiards. He became so proficient,he set an 18.2 Balkline world record with a run of 799, in 1921. He took hisplaying skills on the road, touring the country and amazing audiences fornearly 35 years. He left an everlasting legacy – the resolve of the humanspirit – upon his death, in 1938.

WOMEN’S RACES EXTENDED!!

BCA Pool League is very happy to make the following announcement. Ourstated goal is to improve the opportunities for all pool players through fairgovernance and equitable policies. For years the women have been“shorted” in the BCA National 8-Ball Tournament held each May in LasVegas. In both the open team event and the trophy event, the women historicallyhave only played to 8 games, whereas the men have played to 13 games. Both men and women have the same number of players (5) and pay thesame entry fee. In following our sense of fair play, the BCA Pool League isproudly announcing that effective in May 2005, the women matches willnow be a race to 10. After analyzing the 2005 event, we hope to extend theraces even longer. Time, number of entrants, and number of tables availablewill be the controlling factors. We hope this will encourage more women to experience the greatest pooltournament in the world. And we feel it is the right thing to do. In time, wewould love to see the gender barrier gently fade away. Although that is notlikely to happen in the near future, we hope this is recognized as a step inthe right direction.Go to www.playbca.com for the most up-to-date info on the BCA PoolLeague. If we can help you in any way (or if you need to know the factsabout BCA Pool League), please contact us at (866) USA-POOL, 719-264-8300 or [email protected]. It is always our pleasure toserve you.

agenda to get those moving again, to get those completed. There arechanges to the tournament as far as who’s renting tables, what kind oftables, not any major fundamental things the players really care about. It’smore like who’s going to produce our program guide and things like that.D”C”A: Is Jean Bartholomew still going to produce the program guide?Mark: I have sent an offer to her. I have asked her to submit a proposal forcontinuing to do that. In my opinion, she’s welcome to do that. I do notintend to exclude anyone from the association. She produces a very goodplayer program. She benefited from that work she did. If she’d like to continuethat, she can submit a proposal. There are other interested parties and Ihave suggested they also submit a proposal and we’ll discuss thoseproposals in one of our meetings.D”C”A: Thank you Mark for taking your time.Mark: You’re welcome, I appreciate the interview so that we can explainto the players what’s going on.

Yes, we are. You can’t believe everything you hear these days, can you?The BCA Pool League is alive and doing quite well, with business as usualin the Colorado Springs headquarters until our new building is completedin Las Vegas. The BCA National 8-Ball Championships remain slated atthe Riviera Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas each May through 2010, and theBCA National 9-Ball Championships have been added for November 2004at the Plaza Hotel & Casino in downtown Las Vegas.By the way, our new building is being built by the new league CEO MarkGriffin, and Mark has reached into his pocket to fully fund the league operation“for as long as it takes.” Keep in mind that John Lewis admitted in a publicforum (in Colorado Springs, June 5) that the ACS is using funds receivedfrom BCA state associations to pay for ACS operations. Please rememberthose words if you are asked “to switch” your state association to ACS.We believe the BCA dues that funded your state association were intendedto fund events for the BCA members who paid those dues, and not as giftsor loans to another league.League Operators — Remember also, the recent notice from Steve Ducoffreminding you that after June 1st your state association voting rights mmaydepend on the renewal of your sanction with the BCA Pool League. Pleaseget your applications for league sanction in to us, so that we can validateyour status as “a BCA league operator in good standing” and assure yourright to vote.We recommend that you review your state association by-laws carefully. In some states, the state association by-laws impose a strict code of ethicsintended to protect your rights and your state association funds. So, nowis the time to ask questions of your state association officials. If theyrefuse to provide you the answers you need, please feel free to contact us.We will assist you anyway we can.Lastly, a personal note from me as your new CEO of the BCA Pool League. There are rumors circulating that the BCA Pool League is negotiating tosell the BCA leagues to ACS, or that the BCA Pool League is out of business. These rumors are NOT true. I (Mark Griffin) played a major part in initiatingmeetings with ACS officials with the goal of finding some common groundbetween the BCA and ACS, and with the hope that the players and operatorscould avoid being torn between the two league systems. I wasunsuccessful, but I tried. I love the sport of pool and think that I can helpimprove the future of the game. I have a vision for the BCA Pool Leagueand it is not for sale.It is the BCA that allows true dual-sanctioning, and defends the player¹sright to play on any and all leagues. Go to www.playbca.com for the mostup-to-date info on the BCA Pool League. Again, if we can help you in anyway (or if you need to know the facts about the BCA Pool Leagues), pleasecontact us at (866) USA-POOL, (719) 264-8300, [email protected]. It is our pleasure to serve you.

Legend Parica Setfor WPC Debut

From: Luke Riches, Matchroom SportPinoy pool legend Jose Parica is set to make his debut appearance at the$350,000 WPA World Pool Championship this summer after accepting asponsors invitation from event promoters Matchroom Sport.Despite nearly 25 years as one of the world’s premier 9-ball exponents, the Los Angeles-based Parica has never before had the opportunity to testhis considerable skills against the toughest line-up the sport has to offer. The 2004 World Pool Championship takes place from 10 - 18 July at theWorld Trade Center, Taipei and is scheduled for over 60 hours of livebroadcast on ESPN Star Sports throughout Asia. For Parica, a youthful looking 54, Taiwan has proved a happy hunting groundover the years as he has racked up two major wins - the 1980 Internationaland the 1993 Peace Cup - in his sporadic visits to the country. The 2003 US Open runner-up said, “I’m looking forward to it. It is a fantasticchampionship and I will be going to do my very best to win.”Parica’s presence in the 128 man starting line-up highlights the anomaliesthat the World Pool Championship selection process can throw up.Despite being ranked No.2 on the UPA US Tour, Parica could not benominated by the Billiard Congress of America as he is not an Americancitizen.Similarly, the Asian Pocket Billiard Union could not nominate him either, because despite Parica being a citizen of the Philippines, he does not holda ranking within that organization.Commented Matchroom Sport Chairman Barry Hearn, “ We’re thrilled thata cueman of Parica’s talent will be with us in Taipei and I’m sure he will bea real danger to anyone he meets.“We are seriously looking at the selection procedures for 2005 with a viewto giving it a complete overhaul.”

from: David Vandenberghe, BCA Pool LeagueThe BCA Board of Directors had discussed the future needs of the BCA PoolLeague for the past two years. They felt it necessary to find a qualifiedleader to take the BCA Pool League into the future, and allow the BCA torefocus o-n its mission as a trade association. They found just such a leaderin Mark Griffin, and he has assumed control of the BCA Leagues as of June1, 2004.The new business — Under new management, the basic league structurewill remain intact and all league operators will be treated equally. For generalleague information, go to www.bcapoolleague.com Mr. Griffin may bepersonally contacted at a toll free phone number (866) 793-7665, at hispersonal cell phone number (812) 987-1461, and at his Email [email protected] and [email protected] Advisory Board — we are currently forming our initial league advisoryboard, and we seek qualified candidates to fill the remaining board poositions. If you wish to serve, or if you wish to nominate a qualified candidate, pleasecall Mark at (812) 987-1461. We still need representatives from all criticaldisciplines — especially players.New Canadian presence — we are currently talking to candidates forestablishing a new Canadian BCA office and producing the BCA CanadianChampionshhips. The BCA will have a strong presence in Canada.New events — The new BCA Pool League is bringing back the BCA National9-Ball Championships for 2004. Join us November 16th-21st, 2004 at theUnion Plaza Hotel and Casino — http://www.plazahotelcasino.com — inDowntown Las Vegas. The $13,000 added 9-Ball event will include singles, doubles and team divisions, and will be played on 7-foot Diamond SmartTables. The new “BCA Grand Masters” division — the previous league managementconfused the boundaries between the Open and Masters divisions, and thesedivisions are now being redefined. We will follow the lead of the VNEA andcreate a higher category of Masters — which we will call the “BCA GrandMasters” division.Dual sanctioning — in order to give the players more opportunities to play,we will open up the “dual sanctioning” policy we inherited from BCA.Pool in the Olympics — The BCA once envisioned an Olympic concept thatbegan with a new organization with seats for ALL worthy pool, snooker andbilliards organizations in the US. In other words, an all inclusive organizationthat could represent all amateur and pro players. The BCA Pool Leaguewould wholeheartedly support such an honest attempt to get pool into theOlympics.

Randy Camantigue“The Break” would like to thank McDermott Cues for sponsoring the tourand City Lights for hosting our finale. We would also like to thank all thelocations and players who have supported the tour this season.Andrea would like to invite all the players back to City Lights in Septemberbecause she is bringing back the Wednesday Night “Heavy Hitters” 9-BallTournament. Sign-ups are at 7PM, starts at 7:30PM with a race to 3. Seeya there!McDermott Tour’s Roadmap to SuccessOctober 3rd was the start of the McDermott NorthWest 8 and 9-Ball Tourpresented by “The Break”. First venue was City Lights Tacoma, Washingtonand was billed as a BCA warm-up for Lincoln City, small table 9-ball. Thefield was limited to BCA players and brought in the best players fromWashington and Oregon.Stan Tourangeau and RichGeiler, two talented playersin the Northwest fought ahill-hill match in the finals, with Stan coming out on top.It was a great kick-off to theseason.Troutdale, Oregon at Skyland Pub saw the first 8-Ball stop on the McDermottTour on October 11th. Pool players packed the pub for play on three 4 x 8Valleys and four 3.5 x 7 bar boxes which made the tournament challengingand full of surprises. Local talent Glenn Atwell played strong the entiretournament and went undefeated to win. The spectators were treated tosome very tough play by all the participants and everyone found the finalmatch between Glen Atwell and Mike Stevens riveting.Next up on the circuit was Let’s Play Billiards in Forest Grove, Oregon,November 1st. This was again a 9-Ball stop and was shaping up to have astrong field of 48 players. The actual count on the day of play was farbelow this expected number but the owners, John Campbell and GaryFrench still added the $1,000 to the pot. Darin Walding the tournamentdirector remarked, “Isn’t it strange to see more heart from a room ownerthan from Northwest pool players? The tournament was successful withor without a full field, it was disappointing to me to have heard throughoutthe years how there are no good tournaments in Oregon, and when we dohave a strong added pot, the players call in sick? I think the pool players ofthe Northwest at least owe an apology for not supporting pool, or at leastthe integrity to not whine about lack of events in the Portland area.” Everyoneenjoyed the tournament and Brett Seyler took top honors. The tour now turned North to City Lights in Tacoma for a Thanksgivingweekend 9-Ball tournament. This time the play was on the 9 foot tablesand the house was packed with 61 players all vying for their share of the$3,940 pot. Even though it was a holiday weekend the field was very strongwith the best players in the Northwest coming to play. Tournament DirectorAndrea Saenz-Maes remarked that, “It was an honor to watch andparticipate with some of the best in the business”. The top four were namesfamiliar to anyone who follows pool in the Northwest, Stan Tourangeau,Dan Louie, Marlon Oliveros and Glen Atwell. Stan again took top honors atthe 4th stop on the McDermott Tour.December 13th and 14th was the 5th stop at Harvey’s Billiards in Renton,Washington. The field was originally limited to 32 players but was expandedbecause of the demand for spots in the tournament. The field could havebeen twice as large with an entry of $25. Bert Harvey, owner and tournamentdirector instituted a rule to keep the players on time. “For every 10 minutesyou were late for a match you lose one game”. This rule only got usedduring the first matches and was not needed again. This was the first “nosmoking” venue on the tour which didn’t phase the players at all. Thefinals saw Dan Louie and Robert Colby contending for the $700 first placeprize money. Dan came out on top 11-7.The next stop moved east 300 miles and foul weather limited the field(which is not uncommon for January) at The Falls Club in Post Falls, Idaho.Expecting a full field of 64 players a heavy winter snowstorm preventedmany players from making the trip but the field was still a strong 51 players. This tournament advertised a $5,000 payout due to the generosity of JohnCarr owner of The Falls Club and the field of players was proof of that. Itwas Tom Ford’s first appearance in a BPPPAevent, and although he didn’t get much table timeagainst Peach, can be pleased with hisperformance, knocking out the likes of MartinhoCorreia and fellow snooker pro Nick Dyson onhis way to the final. The fact that most of the top eight got no furtherthan the last 16 stage did Daryl’s cause no harm.A crunch game came when Peach was pairedup with the number two Raj Sagoo at the last 16stage, a match he won 9-7. Raj and the most ofthe top eight will be hoping for a reversal offortunes in the next double-pointer, at the end ofthe season.Finishing 3rd - 4th were Nick Dyson and SteveBrown, with Jay Trivedi (the highest finisher outof the top eight apart from Daryl), Wayne Lloyd,Clark Smith and Martinho Correia making up theremainder of the last eight. Corteza the Conqueror!

Lee Van Corteza receiving trophy and winners check fromMr Erick M Bartolome and Mr Aristeo G Puyat

By Bob Guerrero

Before this weekend, Lee VanCorteza was known as a gamblerwith a thin tournament resume. Butnow he’ll be known as somethingelse: Champion of the Manila leg ofthe 2004 San Miguel Asian 9-BallTour.Van Van, as the 25-year-old nativeof Davao, Philippines is called, outdueled Bustamante in a riveting,extended-racks final, 13-11 in frontof an enraptured audience at theOctagon Hall of Robinson’sGalleria. It was enough for Django to build aseemingly unassailable 10-6 lead. The shot of that run was a jaw-droppingtwo-rail bank kiss on the two off the six in rack 15.But breaking for the match, Bustamante overdrew his break shot straightinto a corner pocket. That proved to be a crucial error. Corteza found anextra gear, picking off four racks in a row to level the match and send thefinal into extra racks. Bustamante responded with a massive break in rack21 which claimed five balls. But Corteza made the most of his break in thenext rack, snookering Django on the three and running out. Corteza drilleda series of tough shots to reach the hill, 12-11. He ran out the final rack. The lanky former Southeast Asian Games gold medalist earned US $10,000for the win. Bustamante settled for US $5,000.Information & photo courtesy of espnstar.com.

Saddler tournament director kept the tournament running smoothly. Two Canadianplayers found their way into the finals Edwin Montal and Mike Vidas. Edwin wasundefeated throughout the tournament and beat Mike 9-6.Once again the tour ventured into Oregon to the Cue Ball in Salem, February 21st.And once again an Oregon venue didn’t get the player draw. Jim Lebold, owner evenprovided the players with free Lattes, Cappuccinos and donuts, not to mention the9 foot tables covered in Championship 3030 tournament cloth. With 21 tables toplay on the tournament ran quickly. The tournament directors expressed that “Whilethe playing field lacked quantity, it certainly did not lack in quality”. This stop hadpast McDermott tour stop winners in contention. They were Stan Tourangeau (1st),Glen Atwell (3rd) and Brett Seyler (4th) who filled out three of the top four spots.Justin Lilje, a new player on the tour took 2nd place.March 20th and the tour turned once again to Idaho for an 8 Ball stop. This time thevenue was Mingles in Moscow. The field was limited and play was held on 4.5 x 9foot Brunswick Medalist tables covered in 860 Simonis cloth and cleaned withQuick-Clean. Skyler, owner of Mingles furnished coffee and donuts for the playersand even raffled a McDermott Cue during the event. The tournament was won byClay Belvoir who went undefeated and faced Tony Waters in the finals.Heading south 32 miles to Lewiston, Idaho, Shooters Sports Bar hosted the nextstop on the tour April 3rd and 4th. Max Martin, owner with his son Zane worked veryhard to put on an awesome tournament. Local television channel KLEW was presentand aired the final match including an interview with Stan Tourangeau the winner.Max even went so far as to have some great looking T-shirts printed for the event.Shooters really went all out to show the players a great time in their new facilitydesigned for tournament play. “The concensus among players, both locally and outof town was Great Place, Great People, Great Tournament.” Stan faced WayneBoyd in the double elimination finals and won 9-4/9-3.Heading back west to Seattle and 80 miles south to Centralia, Washington home ofthe Olympic Club, the next stop April 24th and 25th. The six 9 foot Brunswick tableshad just been recovered by Pat Sheehan who stayed to watch the tournament andclean the tables with Quick-Clean. Pat even put up $250 to the first player thatcould run 7 racks. No one did but the money was added to the pot. The OlympicClub is a unique venue in that it has a Hotel, Restaurant and Movie Theater alongwith the Poolroom in the Club. Everything you could want in a tour stop. ToddChaput, manager even invited Ken “Sarge” Aylesworth to put on one of his famousTrick Shot Exhibitions during the tournament. This was the first tournament everplayed in Centralia and everyone is excited for a return visit. The field was filled withbig name players from around the Northwest and Simon Pickering of Canada, whofaced Raul Abenojar in the finals, walked away with top honors.
