Are you all excited for DCON? I know I am! We have less than three weeks before the largest district event of the year! For those that are planning on going, it’s going to be jam-packed with fun workshops, spirit battles, and of course, food! So get ready on Friday, March 23 because it’s going to be crazy! I’ll be emailing all you attendees information about DCON soon. So keep your heads up!

For those that aren’t going to DCON this year, don’t worry. The new UCLA Circle K 2012-2013 board will have a bunch of fun events in store for the next quarter. Keep an eye out for End of the Year Banquet on April 15! This is going to be my last quarter serv-ing you as president and I just want to say, it’s been a blast. This has been an amazing year and I’ve never met so many enthusiastic and quirky people.

I’ve learned so much about Circle K and the members in it from being part of board for two years. There’s always room for growth and I encourage all members to run or apply to be part of board before they graduate. It’s a rewarding experience!

As of right now, I just want to say thank you to everyone who’s supported the club. We wouldn’t be the club we are today without you all!

Thank you!-- Neil Yonzon

I pledge to uphold the objects of Circle K International,to foster compassion and goodwill toward others through service and leadership,to develop my abilities and the abilities of all people, and to dedicate myself to the realization of mankind’s potential.

AHHHH, the time has come~!! It is my greatest pleasure to present to you the very last issue of TurKey Break of this CKI term. And it’s an extra long issue as well, with 22 pages as opposed to the usual 16~!

I’ve never been more blessed to be a part of and work with such a wonderful organization. I’ve met people who I could spend all night talking to and being on board for two years has granted me more than I can bear. It has truly been my honor to be your Publications Editor this year. It’s bittersweet that my time is up, but hey, all good things must come to an end at some point!

To next year’s board, I wish you the best of luck. It ain’t easy, but I will be on the sidelines if you should ever need any help! My experience doesn’t mean nothing, you know~

While I’ve put out quite a number of issues for TurKey Break, it defi-nitely would have not been possible for readers/members like you. You and what you do made this happen. It’s come a long way, and I guess at this point, we can cross our fingers to place for Outstanding Newsletter at DCON... ;)

As your 2011-2012 Publications Editor, I bid you all farewell with this issue. I sincerely hope you’ve enjoyed every issue of TurKey Break! Best of luck to next year’s board and my successor, whoever you may be... :D <3 Toodles!

Diane Santos, Third-YearHistorian

From the looks of the building, you wouldn’t think that inside there’d be a chic arrangement of fancy tables, photo ops, and service stations, but once you walk in, claim your free Aeropostale shirt (where a small sized volunteer shirt is actually a small), and grab a few appetizers, you kind of wonder whether this really is service. At first, we’re confused, expecting some volunteer coordinator to tell us what to do, but then we rediscover our inner camera whores and gravitate toward any and all photo opportunities. From the classy candle-lit tables, to the teens-for-jeans backdrop, to the carefully stacked jean pile, we snap, snap, snapped away, abusing our cameras’ little buttons.

Then, this bald man (wish I could remember his name), comes up to the podium to kick off the 5th annual Teens-for-Jeans event and explains the four opportunities to volunteer our time to: (1) packing jeans into boxes, (2) writing letters to the kids receiving the jeans, (3) drawing posters/taking pictures with them, and (4) getting interviewed about the event. He goes on about the

cause, the people it will help, the amount of jeans they’ve gathered, and then introduces Kristen Bell (aka Veronica Mars) to speak more about it. She was as adorable in person as she is onscreen. Cameras went wild everywhere.

With that all said and done, we Circle K’ers sprang into action to pack jeans. We packed them all so fast other people there barely got a chance to put their wine glasses down and fold a couple pairs. We hit up nearly every volunteer station, writing heartfelt letters and showing how much UCLA Circle K supports Teens-for-Jeans. Those not camera shy did the on-camera interview (kudos to them). Some of us even got our shirts signed by the cast of Pretty Little Liars. When we ran out of stuff to do, two things: open bar and free food. Of course, all we ordered were Shirley temples (much to my dismay), but we did hunt down every waitress carrying a tray to appease our college appetites.

All in all, it wasn’t your typical service event. We didn’t get to meet any of the teens these jeans were for or interact with anyone less fortunate than ourselves, but we did our part to help and in the end, it was really fun and for a worthy cause.

UCLA Circle K served up some delicious crab at the annual Crab Feed fundraiser on Sunday, February 25 at the Ken Nakaoka Center.

All proceeds went to one of our district fundraising initiatives Not For Sale, a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness of human and sex trafficking and abolishing slavery.

Volunteers of Crab Feed started off the day cooking pasta and decorating the center with centerpieces, posters, and signs. A few of our members even got a

chance to practice their cooking skills.“I got a chance to learn how to make

punch and brownies!” junior Tiffany Wu said.

“I’ve never prepared crab before until today. The fundraiser was a great event!” junior Brian Kan said.

At 6pm, members suited up and served spaghetti, pasta, and of course, unlimited crab.

Throughout the night, raffle prizes were announced and given out.

Overall, UCLA Circle K fundraised up to $205.32 for Not For Sale.

Wow, we’ve reached over 8000 hours for the 2011-2012 year! Service team really couldn’t have done it without the collaborative efforts from all of you! You all have made a huge im-pact on the community and it really shows through what you’ve done this year. Even though the term has officially ended, get a

head start for next year and keep ondoing service for the community!

Service marathon, like any marathon, is a test of endurance, commitment, and drive. It is also one of the most exhausting, emotional, and rewarding experiences that a general member, like myself, can achieve with UCLA's CKI. For many of us, the challenge was accepted. But by the end of the next day, less than a dozen made it through the finish line of total victory... of SERVICE!

It began with preparing simple bagged meals for the homeless consisting of a PB&J or ham and cheese sandwich, an orange, and a handwritten card with heart-filled regards. Then, we all dispersed into Westwood village for delivery. In groups, we ventured in hopes of gaining acceptance of our kind gesture.

For me, my first handout was a moment of utter rejection, but with the consolation of FELLOW Circle Kers’ my spirit was lifted to continue. The next event was card-making for the seniors at Cheviot Hills. This required our creative side as we wrote and decorated Valentine-themed cards. Later, campus recycling took place and we salvaged waste bins for recyclables with a little bit of Parkour from there to there. After, we made adorable plushies for kids with our sewing skills (non-existent for me). Once that was done, we made fluffy fleece quilts for the homeless barely cold winter nights.

Were you one of the courag eous Service Marathoners? The sun rises and our marathon group splits up, one to Reading

to Kids and the other to TLC for Trees. I went to read and the kids were quite comical. When asked a question, one student even responded with “IDK.” Although I didn't go to TLC for Trees, I'm sure everyone had fun with getting down and dirty with manual labor. Finally, it was time for the last service event of the marathon!

Because of event caps, the group was once again split up for True Pablove and a “surprise” service project. I went to True Pablove where we honed our LEADERSHIP skills by initiating service and conversing to coordinators and attendees. Concurrently, the surprise alternative was a clean-up at the sunny beaches

of Santa Monica; service to Mother Nature and King Triton! As the sun set in the distant horizon of LA (how pulchritudinous,

right?!), service marathon came to an end. Successful marathoners cheered with rejoice; absorbing the magnitude of commitment to SERVICE, FELLOWSHIP, and LEADERSHIP...which was soon greeted by well-awaited...Zzz.

It is sad that this is my last year on board, but it has been such a plea-sure to work alongside such amazing individuals, especially the service team (shout out to J^2!). Our club has grown so much within one year and I am so proud of everyone. I couldn’t have asked for a better board. Incom-ing E-board, I have no doubt that you will do an amazing job, especially because of my successor. Ha ha, but

in all seriousness, I know that you will take the club to a whole new level and I am excited to see what you have in store. And to the club as a whole, we would not be where we are now if it weren’t for everyone. This club has the best members ever! I am glad to have made friends with so many of you and I hope to enjoy my last quarter alongside of you all as a member.

My time as Treasurer is almost up and I have enjoyed the year-long ride. The work has been hard at times, even to a point where I doubted my ability to keep up, but I kept at it and I am glad I stuck with it. I do not regret ever taking up this position and I am glad I was able to work with such a wonderful E-Board and A-Board and Rich Thigpen. I look back at my term and see many things that I could have done differently

and many more things I could have done, but I am happy about where I ended up. I know that Brian (Treasurer-Elect) will be able to go even further than I could have gone and will do great things. Some parting advice for our new Board is to always remember that you are in this alone. You have so many great people to ask for help and support or even just to fall back on when things get difficult. The only thing I would really ask of you is to try the best that your capabilities will allow you in all aspects of life: School, Circle K, Friends, Family, your own Well-being. Find that right balance and everything will not seem as bad.

out with the old

I can’t find a word that perfectly describes my experience as president. All I can say is that it was a fun, crazy, busy, and rewarding experience. Being part of this club for three years now, I’ve never seen the club grow this much before. I want to thank everyone who’s supported the club in any way. Whether it was simply going to a social or even helping out

with a huge service event, each and every one of you contributed to the growth of this club. As an advice for next year’s board, please don’t forget that you’re a col-lege student first. Go out and have fun. Meet people outside of Circle K. Work out. Study! Don’t forget to prioritize. If you prioritize, it’s easy to get work done. But at the same time, it’s easier to mess up and fall behind. Let every mistake be your motivation to do better. Even though I won’t be president, I’ll still be part of the club and I’m excited to lend out more of my time to anyone in the club that needs it. Catch me during general meetings cause I’ll sure will be there attending!

Thank you for allowing me to serve as your secretary this year. Being the youngest eboard member this year has been a challenge but also a blessing. I’ve been allowed to serve with such amazing people and give back to this amazing club at an early stage. I wish I had more time to accomplish the goals I had in mind and aid every member but alas just as I got used to the position my term is ending.

Thank you for putting in the service hours and coming out to circle k events it’s been an honor to input all of those hours and keep track of each and every one of you members. I hope you like the changes that board has made this year and that you feel even more welcomed into our club. Good luck to each and every one of you it was great serving you. My advice: Go out to events try and meet new people work on those bonds that you’ve created in our club, it’ll make your college experience so much better and full of random boba runs. :)

To The 2012 2013 Eboard: Being on eboard gives you a different perspective on the club, viewing everything on an administrative standpoint being the ones who are watching over the operations of the club, not many know what you actually do but it certainly is tought work. So stay humble and gain the trust of your board and most of all don’t try to burn out!

Goodbye y’alls! Thank you for allowing me to be your AVP - It has been quite lovely! As my term ends, I can’t help but reflect on my time in UCLA Circle K, and it really has been one of the best experiences of my college career. To my boardies, you all are amazing and we wouldn’t have had such a successful year without your dedication, innovation,

and hard work. I appreciate everything you’ve done for the club! And to the men of E-board, y’alls were a blast. Good teamwork, fellas! Some words of advice for next year’s board: Take it slow, make it good! Always remember to have FUN! (And if you need a driver, next quarter, hmu! And to all my CKI friends, no more meetings...so let’s HANG OUT! Hmm... free time is such a strange concept....

brrrr....chillin’at snowcial

Diana Cheng, Fourth-YearUCLA Circle K Member

We had a glorious 2 days and 2 nights at Snowcial! After a windy drive up the mountain, our first night was filled with laughter as we cozied up in the cabin with a game of Taboo!

In the morning, we walked over to a nearby hill and went sledding on anything we could find or had handy. We got pretty creative and used everything from a reusable shopping bag to a cooler lid

and even a plastic storage box. Needless to say, these weren’t the best sleds and our butts froze while taking quite a beating, but TOTALLY WORTH IT.

Later that day, we made a trip into The Village and explored the little shops there! My favorite store (possibly of all time) is this one called Stupidiotic. It had all sorts of funky trinkets- some useful, some not, but all hilarious.

We watched Rango as we ate dinner, followed by an INTENSE battle of the sexes Taboo game.

The next morning, we stopped by Big Bear Lake to take in the scenery and feed the ducks. We were surprised (and a bit scared) by the swarms of ducks that swam in (some of which were quite aggressive) and by the hovering seagulls! It probably looked like we were getting attacked by birds from far away.

Overall, snowcial was a great experience where you can explore a new place, get in touch with nature, and bond with awesome people! (:

Aloha amigos! When you think of a tropical paradise you probably imagine a vast, sandy beach with tall palm trees in the background while you get your tan on. Sadly, we are poor college students who can’t afford a Hawaiian vacation in the middle of midterms, so instead we recreated that fantasy on the hill with Café Tropics.

Upon entering, I could see paper flowers hanging from the ceiling and a great selection of snacks and drinks, which included pineapple soda, a definite highlight of the event! I even

got lei’d and got to watch people try to play Limbo, but in the end they ended up smacking each other with the inflated stick.

Instead of tropical music to set the mood of the evening, the karaoke fundraiser was going on at the same time and we heard members “sing” songs such as “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen and even “Hey Ya” by Outkast. Those who weren’t singing had a chance to mingle and chat over animal crackers and Hawaiian Punch.

It was a great event to have some fun with some fellow Circle Kers in the midst of midterms. Hope to see you all at the next Café TurKey!

If you don’t know what Dance Marathon is, it means you should need to pay attention to more of UCLA’s campus events. [Just kidding]

Dance Marathon is UCLA’s biggest fundraiser held at Ackerman Grand Ballroom to raise aware-

ness and funds that benefit four organizations: the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, the largest pediatric AIDS foundation across the globe; Project Kindle and One Heartland, two free summer camp programs that provide HIV-affected children with the experience of a lifetime; and the UCLA AIDS Institute, an organization in UCLA’s own backyard dedicated to the eradication of HIV and AIDS.

In this event, each dancer raises $240 and pledges to dance for 26 hours - this mean no sitting, even when going to the restroom! 15 brave and inspiring Circle K’ers, composed of both returning and new dancers, took this challenge and to-gether raised over $5,000.

Throughout the day and night, we enjoyed various DJs, live performances, guest speakers, food and snacks, arts & crafts, photos, the morale dance (which was played many times) and more. When that Power Hour arrives (the very last hour), everyone is wide awake and some of the best songs are played to end the amazing event.

As a fourth year dancer, I realized that one of the greatest time of my CKI years is doing Dance Marathon. It is during this time that you are able to get spend 26 straight hours with some incredible people and know that no matter what, Circle K members will always be there to support you.

If you haven’t done Dance Marathon yet, you should do it at least once in your UCLA career. Congrats to all of the dancers and thank you volunteers and moral-ers for helping and keep us alive.

Hey Circle K! As a first year and first timer to DLSSP, I have to truly say it was a blast. District Large-Scale Service Project aka DLSSP. Seriously, Circle K and their long acronyms...

When I first arrived at De Neve Turnaround waiting to get a ride for the event, I was pretty nervous because I didn’t know too many people going, and I was afraid it would just be a long day of service and Circle K. However, my assumptions were proved entirely wrong at the start of the car ride when I met a bunch of new and friendly people.

Once we got to the event site called Operation Safehouse in Riverside, CA, a cluster of brightly colored shirts was clearly visible, indicating that there must be Circle Kers around. Through icebreakers, engaging service projects, and friendly people, DLSSP quickly developed a good vibe that would last the rest of the day.

Clubs were divided up into different groups

that were assigned various projects, including yard work, re-painting the house, cleaning, and restocking supplies. In addition, groups sewed PTP dolls to be donated to help our Kiwanis-sponsored doctors.

Overall, the event was very fun and gave me a chance to meet many different Circle-K members from all over Southern California, in addition to reuniting with old friends. Of course, the night ended with delicious food and Half & Half boba.

On Friday, February 3rd, a small group from UCLA Circle K (Jaimie Yap, Michael Zuniga, Michael Yebisu, and myself) went to the AMF Bay Shore Lanes in Santa Monica to participate in the annual Super Bowl-a-thon.

The event was filled with many local social service agencies and all of the proceeds from this event went towards the Westside Shelter and Hunger Coalition. The effort of this coalition is to provide services to homeless

and at-risk men, women, and families. This year, the event was sponsored by the

Santa Monica Kiwanis Club and they were able to reserve two lanes for us! It was kind of difficult for the four of us to play two lanes at the same time, but it was definitely an enjoyable experience.

Everyone was cheering for their own team and in the end we finished the game successfully with several strikes on our board!

Every year I witness the induction of numerous new Circle K members, but very few stay throughout all four years of their college career. I begin to question the reason(s) behind why some members decide to remain loyal to our organization.

As the club’s mascot and silent observer, I can proudly say that Circle K is one of the most tolerant clubs at UCLA, and that is why we attract many incoming college students. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a Liberal or Republican; talkative or socially awkward; straight or a proud bearer of the rainbow flag, we welcome you as long as you share our passionate for service.

As a first-year in Circle K, you see it as a great organization to start building a network without any restrictions or pressure to commit to the club long-term. The people you meet may start off as acquaintances, but they can potentially be your roommate or lifetime friend.

After a few year(s) in Circle K, many members will quit and move onto other organizations or fraternities. However, for the few who stay with the club do it not because of the service event or social events offered, but because of the people.

The seniors loyal to Circle K see the meetings and events as a medium to connect and interact with the people they have already developed a close relationship with. At that stage of their college career where applying for graduate school and searching for full-time job offers has become their top priority, they have already grown past going out to every social or service event.

Despite the service projects being completely repetitive and the fundraising events are excuses to gouge money out of our own members, senior members will stay and continue to support Circle K are doing it because of the friends they have come to known for the past four years.

If you answered “YES” to any of thesequestions, this is JUST the list for you!

Several members of the Public Relations Committee and I developed the ever-so-awesome “UCLA Circle K Bucket List.” It’s made by members, for members!

This list is continued from the last issue. Some are more “off the edge” than others, but hey, it still applies in some sense, right? ;) Enjoy!

Of all the issues of TurKey Break, we’ve never had a shout-out section. Strangely enough, even with quite the popular demand, there haven’t been many shout-outs, even when I first created a webpage for it. After some more attempts, more shout-outs came through. Here you go - Enjoy! :) And yes, whaddup fam & ilu mentee! <3

PILLOW FIGHT!I declare a

Member #1: Potato! Persimmons!Member #2: Wait, what?Member #1: Potato! Persimmons!Member #2: Huh?Member #1: You don’t know? That means you weren’t at Pillow Fight this year.Member #2: Sorry. Yeah, I was busy. How was it?Member #1: That’s what everyone says. Well, Pillow Fight 2012 was awesome! This year we helped out a nonprofit organization called Alexandria House which is a house of hospitality for women and children in need. We had some amazing performers such as Courtney Randall, the 2011 Spring Sing winner, and Youtube sensation, Gerald Ko. Not only that the on-site activities were awesome! I got to build a gingerbread house, make blankets and school supplies kit and drew a pic-ture about what home means to me. In the end, we raised $3009.33 for Alexandria House which will help pay some of their bills and give some necessity materials for families when moving into a new home. It was great seeing everyone from Cal-Nev-Ha, and the background of Alexandria House was beautiful. They did an in-credible job with it.”Member #2: Man, wish I could have gone.Member #1: Too bad. There’s always next year! :)
