Once a temporary base camp was called คายกาญจนบร Kanchanaburi Camp, a training site for soldiers going to the Vietnam War. Now it hasturned into คายสรสห Fort Surasri, a permanent home (คายทหารถาวร) for the 9th Infantry Battalion. It is no longer a tent village but a beautiful small town.

The building of a suitable base camp could be one of the most important features when being on a mission in the target country. Mines, damaged infrastructure, poor road networks, and poor soil conditions could all affect and limit the potential sites for base camps. Therefore, it is necessary to get acquainted with the terms regarding setting up a base camp and learning the names of the items and the camp equipment in the target language. Also it is very important to know how to identify, select and buy supplies and weather appropriate clothing.

Tip of the Day

Thais wear Western-style clothing, except on formal occasions, then they wear national costumes. Women in the upcountry still wear ผาถง a sarong-like lower garment worn by women. Sizes are not standardized, since off- the- rack clothing is not popular. Clothes can be individually tailored quickly and at very reasonable prices.

Royal Thai Army

The oldest and largest of the military services, the Royal Thai Army, traditionally serves as the mainstay of the kingdom’s defense system. The commander in chief and his large staff of military specialists headquartered in Bangkok directs the army in carrying out its mission. For tactical and administrative purposes, the army operates through four regional army commands. The First Army, headquartered in Bangkok, is responsible for the country’s western and central provinces and the capital city. The northeastern quadrant is the territorial home of the Second Army, and its regional headquarters is in Nakorn Ratchasima. The region of the Third Army, with headquarters in Phitsanulok, consists of the northern and northwestern parts of the kingdom. The Fourth Army’s region is located in southern Thailand with its headquarters in Nakorn Si Thammarat.

Tactically, the army is organized into seven infantry divisions (including five tank battalions), one armored division, one cavalry division (with an armor capability), eight independent infantry battalions, two special forces divisions trained and geared for small unit special and airborne operations, one field artillery division, and one air defense artillery division. Three air mobile companies provide the ground force units with battlefield support.

Military Posts

Officers and NCOs do not share dining facilities. There are separate clubs where one finds a menu and pays for their meals. For พลทหาร drafted soldiers, they go to โรงเลยง mess for drafted soldiers where there is no choice of food, and soldiers are not obligated to pay. Here, food is generally not of high quality and in limited supply.

Officers and enlisted personnel do not share the same living quarters. They may live off post or if they choose to live on post, there are very limited quarters available. Drafted soldiers are not allowed to live off post and can leave the premises only with special permission. There is only one large room in each barrack shared by 20-25 soldiers. Each has a bed with a small drawer stand for a few toiletries, a needle and thread, shoe polish and brass polish. Bathrooms and latrines are located outside the barracks. AWOL’s are not uncommon, if caught, they go to a guardroom (place of detention).

On post, besides indoctrinations and training sessions, they have movies as a treat for soldiers once a month. Among other entertainments there can be TV, billiards, chess, checkers, and ping-pong. No cards are allowed in the barracks. Libraries are available on a large post.

ClothesMany Thais prefer to have their clothes made to order rather than buy off the rack. This is because off-the rack clothing is cheaply made and available only in limited sizes: small, medium, large, and ‘one size fits all’. Each size also varies from one manufacturer to another. Imported ready to wear clothes are sized as in the country of origin. Therefore, in Thailand, you can say that clothes sizes are not standardized. This is also true for shoes. So, the best bet is to try them on every time you shop for clothes and shoes.
