Every child matters every day. All children can be high achievers. Term 4, 14 th Oct – 13 th Dec Newsletter Term 4, Week 5 Dear Families, I wish to thank and farewell, Ms Sally Davidson for covering for Ms Lois Paterson for the last 4 weeks. Sally has easily assimilated into our school and professionally continued the learning program for Room 7. Her calm but firm manner has enabled her to build respectful relationships with her students and to maintain a rigorous learning program. We also farewell, Preservice teacher, Ms Linda Cooper, learning under the expertise of, Ms Jacky Vogelsang. On behalf of our Wallaroo PS family, I wish her well in her future studies. We have appreciated, Linda’s involvement and her contribution to the care and education of our students. It is with mixed emotions that I announce that I’ve won a Principal position at Risdon Park Primary School, Pt Pirie, beginning January 2020. Please be reassured that I’m committed to working closely with the incoming Principal when appointed to ensure a seamless transition. I have absolutely loved my six years at Wallaroo Primary School and will leave with fond memories of our incredible and fulfilling journey together. An opportunity presented and the time was right for me on a personal and professional level to take on the challenge of another school. I’m excited to be embarking on a new adventure but at the same time sad to be leaving a school that I’ve built such a strong attachment to. The relationships I’ve developed with the children, staff and families will always be close to my heart. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to lead a school with such potential and for my own personal growth that has occurred over the years. We have an amazing staff which gives me great confidence that the current improvement will be sustained. During the remaining five weeks I will dedicate my time into placing things in order to ensure the school is organised for the coming year. Before the conclusion of the school year, I hope to have the chance to thank you in person for the opportunity to be a significant part of your child’s education because this is what I love to do. I appreciate your encouragement, words of support, constructive feedback and our casual informal interactions. Once again Ashton Scholastic is promoting reading with a ‘Star Reader’ initiative, and have given our school prizes and

certificates to be handed out through the year. Each assembly one student from each class will receive a certificate, bookmark

the school for their reading with a gift bag and certificate.

Room 7 Maths & English

Whilst Lois has been away recovering from surgery I have had the pleasure of teaching the students in Room 7. The

last few weeks, in Maths, we have been discovering how to take survey’s and plot the information into a bar graph

where the information can be interpreted. We thought of brand new flavours of ice-cream and then conducted a

student survey as to which flavour students would like to have invented. In English we have been learning about the

structure of information reports and have put this knowledge into practice by creating our very own information

report posters about different countries. Whilst these are still a work in progress there are some amazing facts and

information that we have discovered. – Mrs Davidson and Room 7.

Deadly Thinking On Tuesday of Week 3 and 4 this term we were a part of the Deadly Thinking run by Nigel Raymond in Kadina. We were in a group of 4-6 boys from different schools. We worked through a booklet. The program was about thinking deadly about our life. We learned how important it is to have a list of 5 people we could go to if things weren’t going so deadly. Then we talked about different things we might have to deal with in life such as; In Relationships we learned that you may fight or argue with a friend or partner but it is the ability to talk about it and then love them again that’s important. If you want a good relationship with your family you need to spend time talking to them this may include watching a movie or having dinner together. In Anxiety and Stress, we learned anxiety can take over if you worry too much. The signs of Anxiety includes things like not being able to think straight, tummy upsets or worrying about small things lots. We learned about sleep. Sleep is really important to stay healthy and calm. Teens need between 8-10 hours of sleep. Some people also have trouble getting enough sleep because when they have had a bad experience, they sometimes dream about it and cannot sleep. Depression is a really serious thing. Sometimes you can tell if someone has depression by signs such as,

Nothing is funny anymore

They look sad or moody

Want to always be by themselves

Not talking to anyone

Trying to stay away from everyone If you know someone with these signs try to talk to them. Ask them if they need help.

Self-harm is when someone starts to hurt themselves because they may be feeling low or flat. Some people harm themselves so badly they need to go to hospital. We learned about bullying. There are different versions of bullying such as physical, verbal or cyber bullying. If you are bullied physically you should tell someone you trust or try to stay away from those bullying you. If cyber bullying is occurring on the computer or device the easiest thing is to stay off or spend less time on it. Smoking, alcohol and drugs. Smoking is awful! We learnt that it can shorten your life by 10 years and no matter what it is terrible anyway. Alcohol is not good at all. If you have too much you can become an alcoholic and that will not turn out well. Illegal drugs are not good but some are good. The good drugs (medicine) can heal or help you live well. Our favorite part of deadly thinking was playing the didgeridoo. The best thing about playing was the raspberry noises, it was hilarious! Our second funny thing was when we went to the park. We almost fell off the train. It was all fun and we learned a lot about ourselves and others. Connor and Brodi.
