Thank you to every parent, carer, friend and family member who came along and supported

our students at our annual Open Day last Wednesday. What a fantastic day it was. Our student

performances and assembly led by our student leadership team were executed with absolute

professionalism. Every student selected a favourite piece of work to share in our hall and the

sausage sizzle and cupcake stall were an absolute success. Our school community is one to be

admired and our Open Day simply showed this once again. I would like to thank the EPPS

staff for their commitment and dedication to teaching every single boy and girl here at our

school. Congratulations to our students for their continued hard work.

SCHOOL READINESS TEST (SRT)

EPPS will be participating in the NAPLAN School Readiness Testing in Week 6. This will be

for students in Years 3 and 5. This is just a readiness test to help our school prepare for online

testing in the future. Both grades will sit the Omnibus test which follows the NAPLAN test

structure and in addition to this, Year 5 will also sit the writing test. Students who were

exempt for this year’s NAPLAN test will also be exempt for the SRT. If you have questions,

RSPCA CUPCAKE DAY

One of our students, Lilly T from 3S, is raising funds for the RSPCA. Lily will be hosting the

RSPCA Cupcake Day here at EPPS on 20th

August. Cupcakes ranging in price from 50c to $1

will be sold at recess on the day. If you would like to contribute to this great cause by

providing cupcakes or just a monetary donation, that would be greatly appreciated.

Congratulations to Lily for following through with a cause she is very passionate about.

PLAYGROUND READING ZONE

Last week we started our new playground reading zone. It was a hit! What a pleasure to watch

our students enjoying reading a book in the blissful winter sunshine. If you have books in

new/near new condition which you are happy to donate, we would love to add these to our

reading zone books. Thank you to our reading zone crew who set up and pack up each lunch

time.

PBL UPDATE

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is coming to Emu Plains Public School!

PBL is an evidence-based whole school system approach that:

addresses the diverse academic and social needs of every student to support them to be

successful

supports students in early childhood settings through to senior years of schooling

enables schools to establish a continuum of supports that are intensified to meet the needs

of every student

is team driven, using a problem solving approach (data, systems and practices) that

engages students, parents and all school staff

establishes positive social expectations for all in the school community

provides a framework for the school and its community to collectively support the

wellbeing of every student.

When implemented well:

students respond positively as they have been taught what is expected of them

staff deliver consistent responses to student learning and behaviour

students feel safe and cared for at school. Their parents, family and community are more

involved in their school

unproductive and challenging behaviour can be significantly reduced for most students.

The students of Emu Plains Public School have been busy deciding on a PBL mascot to

represent our school. Therefore, we would like to introduce…

Eddie the Emerald Emu

Eddie the Emerald Emu is designed to remind the students to:

be safe

be respectful

be a learner

Eddie the Emerald Emu will play a vital role in our PBL journey.

GIRLS STATE KNOCKOUT SOCCER

On a wintery, blowy, blustery, gritty, dusty and dirty day, our fantastic girls soccer team

played against Springwood Primary School in the State PSSA Soccer Competition in Round

5. Congratulations to these girls because they managed to win this game and they will

progress to Round 6. This is an incredible achievement and one that we have not seen at Emu

Plains Public School for many years. In truly difficult conditions, these girls played very

well. This team of girls have a variety of experience and inexperienced players and together

they managed to pull together as a great and supportive little team.

The final score against Springwood was 9-0. Congratulations to Olivia T and Emma M who

both scored three goals. Caitlyn K, Jessica V and Kiya V also scored a goal each. Our girls

did a great job with their defence and managed to keep Springwood scoreless. Being in goals

can be a difficult position so well done to Kaylyn P and Natalie S for their goal keeping

efforts.

Round 6 is set to be played within the next 2 weeks and it will be against Cecil Hills Primary

School in Cecil Hills. Travel to this event will be via private transport so if you are a

parent/relative of one of the girls in the team and you are able to assist with transportation

please contact Ms Griffith. At this stage we do not know the time and date of this game.

FABULOUS STAGE 3 WRITING

Pobble: Swamp Life

I arrived at the surface of the swamp. The cold stung in my glowing green eyes. My hunger

was eating me alive, but I couldn’t morph for another 24 hours.

I should probably tell you how I got this way but it is far too complicated and too painful to

explain. I crawled out of the river slowly trying to look for prey. Before I could pounce on a

group of green toads, I was caged by a mysterious man in a green suit.

Too many things are green in this swamp I thought. Then I was knocked out.

Toot Toot! I looked behind myself and there…was….a…GIANT train coming for my friends

and I. I could not believe my eyes.

It all began one sunny afternoon when I received an invitation from the queen to have lunch

with her, and just when I thought my luck couldn’t get any better, I heard trumpets. I dashed

to the front door and there was a big beautiful carriage and the queen was stepping out of it.

Wow! I couldn’t believe it was actually her, the queen at my door.

“Hello, are you Matilda?”

“Yes I am,” I replied stunned.

“May I come in?”

“Why yes. Welcome to my house.”

“Have you packed you bags?” Asked the queen.

“What do you mean, I thought we were only having lunch,” I replied, shocked.

“You must not have read the fine print, it says you are invited to have lunch with the queen

and stay for five nights at the castle, and bring two friends.”

“Well I’ll just quickly pack my bags and call two friends over, won’t be a minute,” I said

hurriedly.

20 minutes later…

Ding Dong! That’s them now. “Hi guys, this is the Queen.”

“EEEEEK!” The girls scream.

“You must be Hannah and Ava,” the Queen says.

“Yes that’s us, your majesty.”

“It’s a pleasure to meet you,” replied the Queen. “Let’s go.”

We step into the carriage, with our suitcases on the red velvet trailer at the back.

Finally after that long trip, we’re at the castle and it’s smaller than I thought. “Oh no, that’s

not the castle, look behind you,” exclaimed the queen.

“Wow! That’s bigger than I thought. You even have a golden helicopter,” I said.

“Go and explore, feel free to go into the garden or eat some chocolate in our chocolate

factory,” she offered.

“Come on girls, let’s go to the chocolate factory. We all run to the chocolate factory. It’s like

heaven. 3 hours later…

“Uuhhhh! I’m full,” I said.

“So are we,” the girls replied.

“Let’s go run off all the sugar in the garden,” I said.

“Ok,” they replied.

“Wow! This is a massive garden and the flowers are huge and beautiful. Let’s go for a hike

through the garden just to look around,” said Hannah. “Guys, what’s that glowing? Is that a

tunnel? Let’s go in there,” Ava said.

“Okay, I guess,” replied Hannah.

We all run in through the entrance, but as we walk in…a massive rock seals the entrance

behind us. “Um, guys, the door just shut!” I exclaimed.

“What do you mean it shut? Ava said, while trying to push it open.

“Um, try to keep calm,” Hannah said.

“How can I keep calm when we’re trapped inside a tunnel?” Ava screamed.

All of a sudden I hear a TOOT TOOT! There is a train coming but when it is about to hit us, it

suddenly stops. But there is NO driver.

“I don’t know how we’re going to get out,” I cried.

“Me either,” said a voice from the back of the train.

“Who are you?” Hannah asked.

“I’m Bob. I’ve been trapped in that train for years and now you let me out. Thank you.”

“Hey, do you know how to get out of this tunnel?” asked Ava.

“Yes I do, see the chocolate bars over there, eat one and you’ll travel to where you are going

while you sleep.”

“Okay,” we all reply.

I pick up a chocolate bar and eat it, I start to feel dizzy, and then I faint.

3 hours later…

“How did I get here? Oh it was that chocolate bar wasn’t it? What’s the time, I have to get

dinner,” I said.

“Did you have fun exploring?” Asked the Queen.

“Oh, it was quite an adventure!” We all giggled.

Light

Light is very important because it helps us to see. It can come from natural objects such as the

sun or from man-made objects such as light bulbs.There are different types of natural light

sources. The most obvious light source is the sun. the sun produces lots of light around the

world. Light also travels in a straight line and is made up of many different colours.

There are also many different types of man-made light sources as well like street lights. Street

lights give lots of light on the road at night so people who drive cars can see the road.

Our natural source of light is the sun. The sun is also the biggest star in our solar system and

very hot. The sun produces lots of bright light that travels in rays called waves. This helps us

see throughout the day and also helps create life.

We are able to see objects when light hits an object and reflects off. Sometimes light can be

absorbed by an object which means it is opaque.

Light can travel through some objects but not all. Objects you can see through are called

transparent. Some transparent objects are glass cups and windows. There are also translucent

objects which means only a little bit of light gets through. There’s also opaque objects which

means no light gets through.

Shadows are caused by opaque objects. This means that whatever source of light hits an

opaque object from any angle, it will make a shadow. Shadows can change shape and length.

This is because the sun moves in varying angles. Wherever the sun is in the day, it will cause

a different shadow.

Journal Entry – Camp:

We went to the Snowy Hydro Education Centre where we learnt about how they create

electricity and power from using water from the melted snow.

Then we went on a charlift up to the snowy mountains, which I went on with Lily who was

scared we would fall off if they tried to put the belt/harness on, so I had to do it.

When we were on the snow I started making snowballs by getting the snow from other

people’s snowmen that they had stopped making. Before I threw my biggest snowball at Lily,

Mrs Ryan took a photo of me holding the giant snowball.

On the way down the lift I saw an empty McDonalds bag, a bowl with spaghetti sauce in it

and a random lid for a box.

Later we went to the gamesroom, but I didn’t play any games so I was allowed to leave.

Year 6 Camp Recount:

On 31st July I went to Year 6 Camp. We went for four days. It was a snow and Canberra

excursion.

On the first day we left at 6.30am. We went to Mc Donalds to have breakfast. Once we got to

the Australian War Memorial we watched a short clip about the War Memorial. After we

walked around the War Memorial we went to find our soldier on the Roll of Honor.

When we got to the Institute of Sport we got a tour of the place. We then got to go in a place

called Sportex, which has hands on activities. We had lunch on the grass before we went in.

When the bus came we drove to the motel that we were staying at, it was in Berridale. We got

told who was in our rooms and we went to see our rooms. We ate dinner and got ready for

bed.

On the second day, we got up to have breakfast. We got our snow gear and went to the snow.

We got to play in the snow. When we got back on the bus we went back to the motel. That

night we had a disco after dinner. We then went to bed.

On the third day, we went to a different snow field and went on the chairlift. I went on the

chairlift with Emma. When we got to the top we had a snowball fight with another school.

Then we went back to the motel and had dinner. That night we went to the games room. We

then went back to our rooms and went to sleep.

On the last day, we were back in Canberra. We went to the Australian National Museum. We

walked around the museum. When we go to Questacon we had lunch and then went to a

colour show. After the show we went to explore the levels. We then got on the bus and went

LIBRARY NEWS

Thanks to the generosity of the Emu Plains Public School community our Library has 63 new

books: 25 Fiction titles, 3 Junior Fiction titles, 19 Easy Junior Fiction titles and 16 Non-

Fiction titles. These books are currently being prepared for loan and will be available, first of

all to the kind donors, to borrow in time for the Spring holidays.

Our total Book Fair sales have also earned a commission of $1,273.89 which I will be able to

use to purchase more new titles over the coming months. I am even more excited to see that

so many of our children have new books added to their personal libraries at home and were so

keen to begin reading them!

We are fortunate indeed to have such a well-stocked Library for our school community to

enjoy. Your continual support in encouraging your children to regularly engage in reading for

pleasure is greatly appreciated.

I would also like to acknowledge the hard work of the Book Fair Team, Mrs Becus,

Mrs Langerak and Mrs Stadler, whose dedication to the cause ensured a successful day!

We would like to invite you and your child to a “Starting School Playgroup” that will commence on

Tuesday 28th August 2018 at Emu Plains Public School.

The playgroup will be run by an Early Childhood Teacher, supplied by Penrith City Council.

Starting school can be daunting for some children and the “starting school playgroup” will be able to

develop and refine your child’s skills to help them make a smooth transition into the classroom in

2019.
