Term 2 Week 4 Thursday, 24 May 2018 Dear Parents and Carers, FROM THE PRINCIPAL Catholic Education Week Today we launched Catholic Education Week with a Mass celebrated by our new parish priest, Fr Charles Lukati. He is really looking forward to meeting all our students, families and working with our staff to continue to bring the message of Jesus alive and relevant in our lives. Tomorrow is our Sports Day and I hope to see many of you enjoying the day and seeing your children show their many skills, both in athletics and good sporting spirits of encouragement, pride, persistence and care for each other. Next Friday we will conclude Catholic Education Week with an assembly led by R/1 VW and MA and you are all very welcome to join us. New uniform Last week the School Board approved our new school uniform which is very exciting. Our new uniform presents as a very smart looking uniform that the children can wear with pride and a strong sense of belonging to our school community. The whole uniform will be available from our uniform shop, so no longer will you have to go to three or four different places to get pieces of the uniform. Its a uniform that both the boys and girls will wear and so you could hand it on through your family. You wont have to keep track of which days your child wears either the summer/winter or sports uniform as our new uniform will be worn each day and it will certainly provide children with what they want, which is to be comfortable and active everyday, not just the days they wear their sports uniform. The uniform will be available from the beginning of next year and we are currently having a sample made so that we can show you what it will look like. I will let you know when it arrives so you can come and have a look. Id like to say a very big thank you to the Uniform Committee for their time and commitment. If you have any questions about our new uniform please come and see either myself or Alicia Boylan. Archbishop Philip Wilson This morning a verdict was reached in Archbishop Philip Wilsons trial and you may have noced media interest in this maer. For your informaon, media statements from Archbishop Philip Wilson and the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference can be found at this link. Please be assured that our school community takes very seriously our role in keeping all students safe. If you have any concerns or quesons about our child protecon pracces, please contact me. FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - Alicia

Term 2 is certainly a busy time of the school year! We have lots on over the next few weeks!

Sports Day Sports Day is tomorrow. The children are so excited to be practising the different sports including high jump and sack race.

Don’t forget that the Year 3-7s will be leaving the school at 8:45am promptly, so make sure that you are at school on time. All children can wear shirts in their team colours. Preschool to Year 2 students will begin at 11:00am at Santos Stadium.

Please make sure that you have returned all of the relevant medical forms and consent forms for both Sports Day and swimming lessons.

Swimming Lessons Swimming lessons will begin next week with R/1s, 1/2s, 2/3s and 6/7s. The following week the 3/4s and 4/5 classes will participate. Please label all your children’s clothes and belongings.

KidsMatter As I mentioned in the last newsletter, we have a KidsMatter Action group here at St Margaret Mary’s School. The Action Group is pleased to announce the beginnings of Newsletter Connect. This will be a social get together at 2:40pm on Thursdays of even weeks.

This is an opportunity for parents and carers to meet over a coffee or tea in Room 15 to discuss the Newsletter. This is a way for families to connect with what is happening in the school and get support to identify important information in that week’s newsletter. If you are able to help translate the newsletter, please come along and share your skills.

So come along to join us this Thursday at 2:40pm for Newsletter Connect!

IMPORTANT NOTICE:

CHANGES TO SKOOLBAG APP

SkoolBag has just released their Version 3 upgrade. St Margaret Mary’s School is in the process of

upgrading soon.

The next time you open the app, after the upgrade is complete, you will be prompted to register

with a username and password. This has been put into place so that when we create Groups

(i.e. Year groups, sporting teams, special teams) it will enable you to save your Group Subscription

settings across all devices rather than having to re-set all your preferences on each device.

Once registration is complete, you will be sent an email address to verify your account.

In some circumstances, an update for the SkoolBag app may be required, so if the app does not

load properly, check to see if it needs to be updated by visiting your 'store' (i.e. Play Store or App

Store).

Please feel free to visit the front office if you require any assistance.

ANGOLO ITALIANO/ITALIAN CORNER — Gina Armiento, Italian Teacher

I am so impressed with the pronunciation of vocabulary being learnt so far! All units of learning are underway.

Students are working exceptionally well and applying themselves to the learning tasks.

“Receive the Holy Spirit”

John 20:22

Last Sunday we celebrated Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit to the disciples. Jesus told his friends that there would be one

who came to help them, this would be the Spirit of God. There are many references to the Spirit of God both in the Old Testament and the New Testament. These stories show the Spirit as an energizing force that brings wisdom, comfort and a sense of direction to one’s life.

Pentecost is also seen as the beginning of the Christian Church, where communities formed to hear the stories of Jesus and to remember him in the celebration of the break-ing of the bread and sharing of wine.

As we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost today, we are reminded to open our eyes, ears, hands and hearts to the presence of the Holy Spirit and where it is leading us in our own lives.

St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal

Last week Jayne Shortt from St Vincent de Paul came in to talk to children about the work of Vinnies, in particular the importance of the Vinnies Winter Appeal. During the Winter Appeal we are asked to donate any unwanted clothing and blankets that are still in good condition for Vinnies to use in their shelters, provide for the homeless or to sell in their shops. There are eight big blue collection bins placed around the school which you are invited to place any donations you may have in. Any support you are able to offer for this worthwhile cause is most appreciated.

Youth Environment Council

As I have mentioned in a previous newsletter, two of our Year 7 students, James and Campbell, have been chosen as representatives on the South Australian Youth Environment Council for 2018. This week they have attended a camp at Arbury Outdoor Education School with the other children on the council. Two weeks ago James also attended a day designed for members of the council to get to know each other and to start thinking about the work the council would engage in this year. We wish the boys all the best with this important work for our state.

Plenary Council 2020

The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference has been given permission for a Plenary Council to be held in 2020. This is a significant moment for the Church in Australia, with the last one being held in Sydney in 1937. In the past, Plenary Councils have seen priests, Bishops, male theologians and superiors of religious orders come together to discuss and decide on future directions of the Church in Australia. The next one in 2020 will also include lay people and women, the first to do so, and is an important event in the life of the Church. Further information will be given to schools and parishes on how people can be involved. If you would like to read more, please see the link to the website below:

OSHC NEWS — Louise, Rosie and Yimei

Hi everyone, this term we do not need to wear our hats outside as winter is just around the corner! The children have been learning about Emergency Services and the right procedures to put in place in case of an Emergency. They have created amazing posters of an Ambulance, Police Car and Fire Truck. These posters are displayed in the OSHC room for all to admire. For Mother’s Day we made glass candles, cards and flowers. The children also created a Mother’s Day hanging Muriel in which they wrote MUM in different languages!
