To support us in being a community of respect, and in teaching children how to communicate and nurture respectful relationships, St Margaret Marys School draws on Restorative Practices. Restorative Practices are a series of processes based on the innate dignity of each person. They work on the basis that unresolved conflict between two or more persons will negatively affect all those involved. They maintain that those in conflict must be involved in the resolution of the conflict. We are looking forward to an interesting, challenging and worthwhile day of learning. I have shared below an article about Why Catholic Schools receive Government funding? Many people ask why governments fund non-government schools - including parents who send their children to Catholic and other non-government schools. There are many good reasons why commonwealth, state and territory governments fund non -government schools to some degree. They include: AFFORDABLE CHOICE: A school education costs more than $11,000 per primary student and more than $14,000 per secondary student each year, regardless of sector. Most Australian families could not afford this cost, especially if they have two or more children. There is no real school choicein Australia if only wealthy families can afford to choose. ITS FAIR: All families pay taxes and therefore deserve some taxpayer support of their childrens education. A fairly funded non-government school sector ensures families can afford a school that reflects their values and beliefs – an important feature of a pluralist society. IT SHARES THE LOAD: One-third of Australias 3.9 million students attend a non- government school. Government schools are already stretched in many areas. Without non- government schools, taxpayers would need to build (or buy) and staff enough schools to accommodate an extra 1.3 million students. Term 2 Week 1 Thursday, 2nd May 2019

Dear Parents and Carers, FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Every Easter, we celebrate Jesus’ rising from the dead.

The glow of the Easter candle is a reminder that Jesus is here with us.

We decorate the church in white and gold. We sing “Alleluia” – a song of joy.

New Christians are baptized, and we too are sprinkled with holy water as a sign of our Baptism.

The wonderful celebration of Easter lasts for fifty days.

Welcome back to term 2!

It was wonderful to see all the children and families back on Monday, ready to start another busy term of learning, challenges, friendships and fun. I hope you managed to spend some quality time with your family and friends over Easter. As we recognize the importance of the feast of Easter, it is also a time of great joy and celebration – spending time with our loved ones is a great way to celebrate.

A reminder that tomorrow, Friday 3rd

May is a Student Free Day. Staff will be involved in a Professional Learning Day with Bill Hansberry. Bill supports our learning in Restorative Practices. To support us in being a community of respect, and in teaching children how to communicate and nurture respectful relationships, St Margaret Mary’s School draws on Restorative Practices.

As we move towards the Federal Election on May 18th, school funding often becomes a ‘hot

topic’ for politicians and the major parties. I have shared below an article about Why Catholic Schools receive Government funding?

Many people ask why governments fund non-government schools - including parents who send their children to Catholic and other non-government schools. There are many good reasons why commonwealth, state and territory governments fund non-government schools to some degree. They include:

AFFORDABLE CHOICE: A school education costs more than $11,000 per primary student and more than $14,000 per secondary student each year, regardless of sector. Most Australian families could not afford this cost, especially if they have two or more children. There is no real ‘school choice’ in Australia if only wealthy families can afford to choose.

IT’S FAIR: All families pay taxes and therefore deserve some taxpayer support of their children’s education. A fairly funded non-government school sector ensures families can afford a school that reflects their values and beliefs – an important feature of a pluralist society.

IT SHARES THE LOAD: One-third of Australia’s 3.9 million students attend a non-government school. Government schools are already stretched in many areas. Without non-government schools, taxpayers would need to build (or buy) and staff enough schools to accommodate an extra 1.3 million students.

HEALTHY COMPETITION: Given that schooling is compulsory, it is sensible to have a network of affordable schools to provide healthy competition and improve all schools.

TAXPAYERS SAVE: On average, Catholic school communities pay almost 30 per cent of the annual cost of their children’s education and almost 90 per cent of capital works. In 2017, our schools raised $3.6 billion in fees and $1.27 billion in capital costs – a huge saving to taxpayers.

TAXPAYERS FUND NON-GOVERNMENT ACTIVITIES: Governments also fund other private sector activities that have social benefits and high underlying costs such as GP visits, medicines, hospitals, aged care, child care and private bus services. All schools are a public good and deserve taxpayer support.

Federal Election Update - Catholic Education’s key election objectives

Catholic schools are a vital part of Australia’s education landscape; from humble beginnings almost 200 years ago, Catholic Education is now the nation’s largest provider of education outside the government.

The key national issues for Catholic Education at the upcoming federal election are:

- increased capital funding - more resources for early childhood education - religious freedom in schools

THE SEASON OF EASTER Contrary to what many people think, Easter is not a single day - it is a season! Easter begins with the Easter Vigil and continues for 50 days – that’s seven full weeks - not just one day! During this time, the Church celebrates the Lord's Res-urrection, His appearances to the disciples on and after Easter Sunday, His post- resurrection teachings, His ascen-sion into heaven, and in the final days of the season, the anticipation of the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. DID YOU KNOW? · Easter is the beginning of a new season of grace and a time of great joy, celebration and thanksgiving. · The celebration of the Easter Vigil is the beginning of the season of Easter. ·The traditional colour used during Easter is white, however gold may also be used. · Contrary to the belief of many people that Christmas is the biggest celebration for Christians, Easter is the most important season in the Christian Calendar. ·It is the heart of our Faith – it is the climax and centre of the liturgical year.

SMMS SOCCER 2019

The soccer season begins on Saturday 11th May and below is some important information regarding the season. - The first 4 weeks of the program will be distributed at the coaches morning this Saturday, which all coaches will be attending. I will then add the times on the Skool Bag app and the next newsletter. - The $25 soccer fee needs to be paid to the front office before the beginning of the season. - Soccer tops will be available at the uniform shop on Tuesday 7th May. Please ask at the front office if you need further information. Due to the number of players we have this year, we will not have enough tops for all the teams. Therefore, the U/6 GREEN Team coached by Ody Gromitsaris will wear their Sports Uniform. We will provide playing bibs for match days. - Please remember that your child’s coach is volunteering their own time so your child can play. Remem-ber to offer help with anything that will make the running of game day easier for the coaches. Have a great season!!

Sports Day is scheduled for Friday 7th June. T Shirts can be bought from Best and Less for approximately $4.00. Your child will let you know which teams they are in.

Mark Le Messurier – PARENT EDUCATION SEMINARS

TOPIC: A diagnosis of Autism Spectrum; how does that feel for par-ents, what does it mean, what’s next? Wednesday 7

th August at 6pm – St Joseph's School, Ottoway

Mark Le Messurier is a teacher, counsellor and author of many books. He is the co-author of the 3 ‘What’s the Buzz? social skills friendship building programs and Archie’s BIG BOOK of Friendship Adventures now assisting children in schools and organisations around the globe. Mark presents at conferences and is a recipient of an Australian National Excellence in Teaching Award. He works in schools and in private practice in Adelaide with young people he affectionately calls ‘Tough Kids’. He is well-known for writing the par-enting books, RAISING BEAUT KIDS and PARENTING TOUGH KIDS. All of Mark’s books will be available at the seminar for purchase, using cash or credit card. He is continuing to offer RAISING BEAUT KIDS and PARENTING TOUGH KIDS as a BOOK BUNDLE (discounted price of $40). To hear Mark interviewed by Debra Tribe on ABC Radio, visit - http://www.marklemessurier.com.au/main/news/a-radio-interview.shtml

Welcome to a shared evening where we all have something in common - Autism.

As a teacher, parent, grandparent, friend, auntie, uncle, brother or sister; each of us has been touched by it, and it is a distinctly different experience for every one of us.

In this workshop you will learn some facts about Autism, but this isn’t my goal. My goal is personal. It is to introduce you to four who have had a lived experience with Autism, in the hope you will be touched in a way, that facts alone can never touch people. Firstly, each of us feel and think about our own version of Autism. This is because one child’s Autism does not present in the same way as another child’s Autism. Personality also plays a strong role, as does anxiety levels, sensory processing differences, emotional and social flexi-

bility, intelligence, learning difficulties, capacity that permit quick, easy change or ‘to go with the flow,’ concentration, natural talents, interests and obsessions or the lack of them. And secondly, are our own personal values about Autism count for a lot too. So? How you feel about Autism? I talk to a lot of parents about their feelings. Feelings that change over time and are often very personal. Early in the journey there’s a temptation to subscribe to a ‘deficit model’ – a style of thinking that focuses on what’s missing and what interventions might ‘fix-up,’ ‘top-up’ or ‘cure’ the missing or delayed skills in children. The professional mantra is, the earlier the inter-ventions the better, but so often this comes at a time when parents are at their most vulnerable. And, they can spend a lot of money, and a lot of time, chasing therapies, programs, healings, and practitioners that sometimes promise way too much, too early. Over time, many of us shift our thinking from a ‘deficit model’, to a much healthier model where we see the young adult as a whole, healthy human being. We learn that time, maturation, some targeted skill building and human connectedness are the prime collabo-rators for growth. Sure, our children may still have Autistic differences, but we reach a point where we can embrace their differences, enjoy their quirkiness, find their strengths, expand on them and celebrate them!

If we fail to see our children’s potentials, we shouldn’t be surprised when they can’t find their own. Let’s learn together and gain

strength and resources from each other. This is a practical workshop set in the context of hope

Mark Le Messurier – PARENT EDUCATION SEMINARS

TOPIC: Setting up for SUCCESS series –

REAL ideas to tame ugly behaviours

Wednesday 18th September, 6pm, St Joseph’s Catholic School, Ottaway

Mark Le Messurier is a well-known teacher, counsellor and author of 11 books. He is the co-author of BOTH ‘What’s the Buzz? friendship/ social skills building programs now as-sisting children (4 to 14 years) in schools and organisations in more than 130 countries. He regularly presents at conferences and is a recipient of an Australian National Excellence in Teaching Award. Mark works in schools and in private practice in Adelaide with young peo-ple he affectionately calls ‘Tough Kids’. He is the architect of the ‘Mentoring Program’ now running in many Catholic and state schools throughout Australia to support vulnerable stu-dents. Mark’s books will be available at the workshop for purchase, using cash or credit card. Mark will offer RAISING BEAUT KIDS ($25) and PARENTING TOUGH KIDS ($25) or to-gether as a BOOK BUNDLE for $40.

This practical BEHAVIOUR CHANGE workshop comes from RAISING BEAUT KIDS and PARENTING TOUGH KIDS

It centres around 3 foundation ideas that every parent struggles to get right and maintain;

1. There is a reason for your child’s behaviour That’s right - it is trying to tell us something! As parents we need to be clever and work out what their be-haviour is really saying. We need to scratch below it and work out what’s driving it, instead of simply re-sponding to the irritation it may cause.

2. How behaviour works Children continue behaviour when they feel it is being rewarded. Children stop behaviour when they feel it is not being rewarded. Our inconsistency, and sometimes misunderstanding, over what reward really means confuses them! So, let’s

look at the idea of reward together. What is the difference between ‘reward’ and ‘giving attention’? Let’s look at tweaking this together.

3. It takes an intelligent plan to manage kids wisely And, this is even more so in the tricky moments. So let’s get up close and personal and fine tune your style so

you leave invigorated to try a few new fresh ideas in the tricky moments!

New brain research confirms that how we live, how love our children, interact with them and regulate our own lives has a big influence on how our kids' brains develop. We are the key to their future! The secret to success lies in our capacity to review whether what we are doing is actually working for our kids, and if it's not, to tweak it so it advantages family life, and their future. An evening of enjoyment, quality learning and an oppor-

tunity to make some real differences.
