STUDENT ABSENCE AND EARLY PICK-UP PROCEDURE

Student Absence If your child is absent from school for whatever reason, this must be communicated to the school by 10:00am that day. Please either let your child's class teacher know, call the school office or send through an Absentee Form via Skoolbag App. Students arriving late will need to be signed in via the Student Sign In/Out Book located in the office. Early Pick-Up If your child needs to be picked up early from school, we ask that you let their class teacher know beforehand as a courtesy. Please sign your child out via the Student Sign In/Out Book and a staff member will ring the classroom for your child to come to the office. We understand that some early pick-ups are arranged last minute and so there might not be a chance to notify the teacher in advance. In these cases, please contact the school office as soon as practicable.

SCHOOL ENHANCEMENT SESSIONS

All our families are encouraged to participate in our Enhancement Sessions as they are a terrific way to not only assist our school but also network and make connections with other families. The school enhancement fee of $200 will be discounted if two or more sessions are attended. If you intend on attending our Enhancement Sessions, you may exclude the $200 fee from your annual school fee and levy total. Naturally, if by the end of the year you have not attended the working bee session/s as intended, this will remain on your account. Some families have indicated that they are happy to attend the Enhancement Sessions without claiming the $200 discount. Please go to www.schoolinterviews.com.au and use code MA4ZT to register for a session. Upcoming School Enhancement Sessions in 2017:

PRINCIPAL’S NEWS

Dear Parents, Caregivers, Students and Friends,

Sacrament of Reconciliation Congratulations to the students in Year Three who received the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time on Tuesday. Our prayers are with the Year Three students and their families as they prepare for the Sacrament of Reconciliation tonight. Thank you to Fr Laurence, Gail Ryan, Erin Nagel and the Year 3 teachers. Thank you also to all the staff at St Michael’s for their attendance and support.

Caritas Fridays in Lent Thank you for your generous support of our Caritas Fridays. This week’s Caritas fundraising for the price of a gold coin is through 1/2 C and their STEM project on healthy eating. I congratulate everyone for showing our children that Social Justice is an important part of who we are and what we stand for at St Michael’s Parish School.

End of Term One We are all finding it difficult to accept that Term One has come to an end. The nine weeks goes by so fast. As usual it has been an exciting, interesting and eventful term. I consider that much has been achieved by the students, staff and parents. I take this opportunity to acknowledge the enthusiasm and interest of our students, the dedication of all staff and the fantastic support of our parents. Our working partnership is highly valued and key to the philosophy of who we are at St Michael’s.

Holy Week and Easter Prayer Services Easter is that wonderful time of hope. It is a time to acknowledge all the signs and symbols of hope that we experience in our world. All the events of Easter are central to our faith. Easter is a time when we are able to reflect on the meaning of our Christian faith and our Catholic Church through Christ‘s death and resurrection. We invite all parents to attend our Prayer Service tomorrow at 9:15am. I thank Erin Nagel and the teachers and students who have done and exceptional job preparing the prayer services. I encourage you to continue the journey at Mass for Holy Thursday, the Good Friday service and of course Easter Sunday. As a school the Preps will lead us to celebrate the Risen Christ when we return in Term Two. At school, Easter Sunday will be celebrated after the holidays on Friday 28th April at 2:30pm. Please refer to our Upcoming Diary Dates (p. 2) for Parish Holy Week services and times.

Farewell to Laura Versace-Shields We will be saying farewell to Laura at the end of this Term as Laura and her husband, Luke, have decided to travel around the world. We thank her for her dedication to our students and wish them a safe and happy trip.

Welcome to Louise and Jordan Several of our staff have completed the MSL (Multisensory Literacy) training as another intervention to support students’ literacy learning. Mandy Spencer will be working with students who will benefit from the MSL approach. I have employed both Jordan Lo Ricco and Louise Story to the role of Learning Support Officer. Jordan is currently studying teaching at Deakin University and is an experienced LSO, and Louise Story is currently working as an inclusion support assistant and has experience as an LSO in the primary setting. We heartily welcome both to our school and look forward to working with them.

Parent/Teacher/Child Conversations Congratulations to the students and teachers for all their hard work in readiness for meeting with our parents to discuss the strengths, challenges and goals for the learning of our students. It is incredibly important that each student has attended these meetings as it sets the focus for future learning for your child. The teachers worked extremely hard analysing the data and building a learning profile of your child/ren. If you have not yet met with the classroom teacher please ensure you contact them to make a time to meet with the teacher with your child.

St Michael’s School Tours Congratulations to our School Leaders who continue to take the school tours. The feedback from the families is extremely positive. If you know of anyone who missed our Open Days, please tell your friends and family to come along, make an appointment and meet our wonderful Student Leaders and to hear about our exciting plans for the future and the excellent learning opportunities our school provides. We have an upcoming Prep 2018 Information Evening on Thursday April 20th at 7:30pm in the Hub. Parents who are interested in enrolling their child in a year level other than Prep are also welcome to this evening.

Masterplan FAQs The new building is at lockup stage. The interior paintwork is up to 80% completion. The heating and cooling systems are fitted. The tree houses are 90% complete. The retractable stairs are due for delivery this week. The furniture has been ordered. The landscaping will be 50% complete. Once the builders leave, the remainder of the landscaping will be completed. How exciting, it is all coming closer to completion!

Reporting Forum: Thursday 30th March Thank you to the parents who attended the Reporting Forum. There have been changes to the way we are able to report and I value the feedback and ideas you have in relation to reporting at St Michael’s. Our last Reporting Forums were a huge success and resulted in positive changes to the way we reported children’s outcomes to our parents. I look forward to taking your feedback and suggestions to the Staff and Leadership team for improved reporting.

80’s Rewind Night Congratulations to the Organising Committee, Tracey O, Melanie B, Susan B, Judy B and Stacey M, and all other PFA members and parents for organising such a wonderful evening last Friday. The staff thoroughly enjoyed themselves and it was obvious the parents did too. Great fun, dancing and excellent fundraising was had by all.

Engagement of Volunteers in Catholic schools Just a reminder regarding the Child Safe Standards for Volunteers. At St Michael’s we are committed to building a safe, healthy and vibrant community. The wellbeing of children and their protection from harm is a paramount consideration for St Michael’s school community. In accordance with Ministerial Order 870, all registered schools are required to meet child-safety requirements for staff selection, supervision and management. We have an important responsibility for keeping children safe. Clause 10 of the order addresses the engagement of volunteers. A volunteer is defined as ‘any person who supports a program at our school through direct contact with students or through school activities without financial gain or reward (p. 4)’. Volunteers are a vital and valued aspect of Catholic education and the contribution of volunteers continues to be encouraged and supported. In relation to child safety and volunteers, we as a school must be satisfied that the ongoing engagement of the volunteer meets the child safe standards. The school must make reasonable efforts to gather, verify and record information addressing suitability of working with children, a Working with Children Check (WWCC), proof of identity and relevant work history involving children. Please contact the office if you are new to volunteering as you require a form which is available to be completed by all new volunteers. This form will give us the information required to meet the child safe standards for volunteers. All current volunteers must have a WWCC. We will be taking a two-tiered approach in order to attain a Volunteer Application Form from all volunteers. We will first send out forms to all new volunteers and then to all other existing volunteers. All people working in a school are central to creating a positive, child-safe environment.

New School Website St Michael's has a new website. The web address remains the same, however, the overall layout has been re-designed and we have improved the content as a way to enhance communication between families and the school. Our website is now mobile optimised to make viewing on portable devices more user-friendly. We ask for your patience during this time as we are still in the process of updating areas of the website as well as some school documents before uploading them. DEPUTY’S NEWS Once again I would like to thank everyone at St Michael’s for the warm welcome that I have received. I cannot believe that I have already been here for a full term. I enjoy every day and love meeting and greeting you all at the gate in the mornings and afternoons. We have had a busy term filled with a lot of learning and many wonderful celebrations and gatherings. I would like to commend the teachers and students for their work this term and thank all parents and caregivers for their support. Have a safe and restful break with your families. I wish you all a peaceful and happy Easter. I look forward to Term Two!

First Reconciliation On Tuesday night we shared a wonderful celebration of First Reconciliation. I would like to congratulate all the children. Tonight we have another celebration with more students receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time. Please keep all of these children in your thoughts and prayers.

Easter Prayer Service in the Hub Tomorrow, Friday 31st March, we are having an Easter Prayer Service presented by the children in Years One to Six. It will begin at 9:15am and all parents and caregivers are invited to attend and pray with us at this special Easter celebration. The Prep children will be presenting a special Easter prayer at our first Assembly on Friday 21st April at 2:40pm.

First Eucharist Next term the Year Four students will begin their preparation for receiving the Sacrament of First Eucharist. As part of their preparation, there are three commitment Masses that parents and caregivers can sign up for. Signing up for these Masses demonstrates your commitment to be involved in the preparation of your child for such an important initiation sacrament. Bookings are now open and will close at 4:00pm on Monday 24th April (Week 2 Term Two). Please go to www.schoolinterviews.com.au and use code tykn7 then select the time most appropriate for you.

Walkathon Update Unfortunately we have had to change the date for the Walkathon. It has been pushed back until August. We will confirm the new date once we have council approval for our booking of Warner Reserve. So watch this space! Erin Nagel Deputy Principal / RE & Mathematics Leader [email protected]

80s REWIND: THANK YOU

Like OMG!! St Michael’s totally rocked the 80s last Friday. The Hub was awash in fluro, mullets abounded, punks were everywhere… it was totally gnarly!! Thanks to everyone who came along and made the night such a success. To all those who flexed their trivia skills, serenaded us with their karaoke and left their inhibitions behind on the dance floor, we thank you! It was a fun night of fellowship and fundraising for our school community. Thank you to everyone who stayed back at the end of the night and helped to pack away tables, chairs, glasses, etc. What an amazing community we have! Whilst having so much fun, we raised $6471 for the school!! The 80s Rewind Committee would also like to thank Kathy M and Vanessa L in the office for all of their help in processing ticket sales via the office basket. Another thank you goes to Marisa M and Erin N for all their support in organising and promoting the night. Kate W, our money lady, thanks for keeping us in gold coins all night! A big shout out to Belinda O for her very helpful assistance with all things eftpos – thank you! To our handsome bartenders, Dave B, Abe S, and Al B, we could not have done it without you! A big thank you to Matt and Melanie Windsor for their continued support. Zali Reynolds from Marshall White, who generously sponsored the evening for us and drew our lucky raffle winner, thank you for your continued support! Laterz dudes! SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL (SAC) UPDATE Four members of the school community have joined the Council this year: Michael Fletcher (Secretary), Jerome Durkin, Jason Hay and Augarette Malki. Kate Earl has taken on the role of Deputy Chairperson. I sincerely thank all the members of the SAC for giving their time and energy to support the work of the Council. We have had a very busy Term 1. In our first meeting of the year, we drew the revision of the SAC Charter to a close (an extensive process that began in 2016). We will provide a copy of this document to all families. A key change has been to align SAC meetings with spheres of the School Improvement Plan (SIP). In our first meeting, Erin Nagel gave an excellent presentation on Education in Faith. This included an introduction to Horizons of Hope – the framework that now underpins the work of Catholic schools in Victoria (http://www.cem.edu.au/learning-teaching/). In our second meeting, Jo Mannix delivered a first-class presentation on Student Wellbeing. St Michael’s has achieved impressive gains in these spheres over the course of the review cycle. Furthermore, there are many robust strategies in place to carry St Michael's forward over the next four years. We thank all members of staff for their invaluable contributions to our school. Please make sure that you include your contact telephone number and also your child’s name & class so there is no delay in getting your items. Please insert your child’s name and class in the “deliver to” field.

Online orders are packed twice a week which are then sent home via the office basket. Returns or items that need to be exchanged can also be sent via the office basket - please make sure you include your child’s name and class so that any items can be sent home. SURPRISE!

Our family was in the car on our way to Rawson to go camping for the

weekend. I was sitting next to Will because I argue with Tommy when my mum asked a question,

"If we had a baby it would be called...?" I said "Bob", so did Tommy and Will. But then out of nowhere my mum said

that we were having a baby!!!!!!!! Everyone was silent for a moment. I was thinking that's why her tummy was getting bigger! We all said Yippee!

We were all so excited. We've now got a new car and I won't have to sit next to Tommy!

EXTEND OSHC AT ST MICHAEL’S PRIMARY SCHOOL

Hi Everyone! We have had some great activities over the last 2 weeks! Our Banana Oat Balls were delicious and very hands on! Our Pokemon week was a huge success, with paper craft, “Find the Pokemon” and our action game! Many children requested these activities again during the week! Our glitter tornado took off and the friendship bands that were made look absolutely brilliant. Last but not least, of course we had Gilbert the Gecko visit and dance up a storm with everyone! I can't believe it is the end of term! Our ‘Take 3’ project is still going and we encourage students to take photos of them taking 3 pieces of rubbish from the beach, parks or school to put in the bin over the holidays. 3 pieces of rubbish reduces waste in the oceans and potentially saves a marine animal! Please feel free to email your photos to us at [email protected] Our Star of the Week Awards go to… Ella R (1/2) and Sarah Y as they have been a wonderful help in the program to staff and other students. They have assisted in making others feel welcome and are always jumping up and helping without being asked – great work girls! Kristy Team Leader

Forthcoming Activities: Wednesday 19th April – Wreath Making, ANZAC Cricket game and other group games

Thursday 20th April – Make a Medal. Poppy & Anzac Acrostic Poem, also ANZAC Football & other group games

Friday 21st April – ANZAC Biscuits, Football & other group activities
