Our teachers are highly skilled and equipped to diversify their teaching to meet student needs and this is often more likely when the group of children are not from a single grade. Message from the Principal Welcome back

It was lovely to see all our students (and teachers) looking

refreshed and eager to resume school following our term

break. One of the lovely things about my job is having

students visit to show their wonderful work, talk about their

learning progress and share excitement over achieved

goals. It’s been a great chance for me to get to know our

students a little better too and I’ve been fortunate to have

many students drop in and share their learning

achievements with me throughout last term and already this

term. Here’s three lovely visitors showing me their excellent

work! During their STEM lesson, Charli, Summer and

Sophie made me a wonderfully creative pen holder for my

office:

Changes to presentation night 2019

Following staff evaluation of the 2018 Presentation Night

and, taking on board feedback regarding the length of the

evening, the decision has been made to return the annual

PBPS Presentation Night to it’s original format and

purpose: celebrating and recognising student academic

excellence and effort across a range of academic, cultural,

sporting, leadership and social/emotional domains.

Following evaluation and feedback, staff have increased

the amount of Special Class Achievement Awards to be

given out for each class. However, in 2019, Personal Best

awards will not be presented at this event. This should not

be interpreted that we do not recognise the value of student

effort, persistence, resilience in learning and commitment

to achieving personal goals. Indeed, I am so grateful to see

personal effort and achievement highly valued at our

school. Our teaching staff are well-aware of the effort that

students make at school across a range of curriculum and

extra-curriculum areas and it is lovely to see this so

regularly acknowledged through our weekly awards

throughout the year. Presentation Night is an opportunity to

recognise excellence and extraordinary effort, therefore not

all students will be individually acknowledged at this special

event.

Class placement 2020

This is a difficult time of the year when enrolment numbers

are sweated over daily, and complicated calculations are

carried out to consider possible class models for 2020.

Whilst being a small school in a close-knit, supportive

community has so many wonderful benefits, enrolment

figures fluctuate considerably from year to year, based on

how many Yr 6 (and other grade) students leave us at the

end of the year as well as new kindergarten enrolments.

Department regulated caps on class sizes means that we

also need to anticipate a large percentage of our classes

being split grades next year. However, Research has

highlighted the benefits for both teachers and children

when learning and teaching in a multi-age classroom.

Benefits include more holistic, child-responsive curriculum

practices that consider the understandings, capabilities and

dispositions that children need for future work, e.g.working

in diverse environments that seek workers who are multi-

skilled, literate, cooperative, creative, adaptable,

independent and resourceful. Our teachers are highly

skilled and equipped to diversify their teaching to meet

student needs and this is often more likely when the group

of children are not from a single grade.

For the next few weeks, teachers will go through a lengthy

process of working out class placement, considering

number of students, gender balance (when possible), the

placement of students with special needs, friendship

groups and identified learning needs. Classes are formed

with a focus on achieving the best possible learning

outcomes for students within the mix of staff and the

policies and resources made available to the school by the

DoE. We also offer parents the opportunity to provide any

specific thoughts which they would like school staff to

consider when forming classes. Consideration of social,

emotional, physical or academic factors from parents may

support the knowledge that teachers have of each student.

If you would like to have your thoughts considered, please

put them in writing addressed to Karen Wardlaw.

Considerations can be delivered via the front office or email

at [email protected] Only written

correspondence will be formally considered and this must

be received by Friday 15 November.

Kind regards, Karen Wardlaw

2020 Book Packs After positive feedback in 2018, we have decided to implement a new streamline way of purchasing resources for the 2020 school year. We are in the process of getting quotes for individual Book Packs, which will consist of workbooks, stationery, mathematics equipment and some art supplies. Once we have received confirmation from our providers, we will notify all families of the cost per child. Payment will need to be made online, by the end of the year for us to have the packs ready for the start of the 2020 school year. Please note, these packs will not eliminate the school voluntary contribution fees. Thank you for your support at this transitional time, Kate Keyes Assistant Principal

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)

such a fun time being covered from head to toe in colour.

The whole school reward of an obstacle course was

combined in with the colour run, which made it even more

fun. Teachers, parents and students were all involved in

this colourful event. We are very much looking forward to

the exciting rewards for term 4. Our trade day will be held

Tell Them From Me Parent Survey

How does it work?

The Tell Them From Me Parent Survey helps to clarify and strengthen the important relationship between parents and the school. The survey is held once a year in Term 3 and is completely anonymous. The survey is conducted entirely online at home or on public computers during the specific survey window. The survey takes around 15 minutes to complete. Parents have until Friday 25 October 2019. You can complete the survey by following the URL: http://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/prettyb2019 Thank you for your support, Mrs Kate Keyes Assistant Principal Parking around our School Please be respectful of our local residents by not parking across their driveways when dropping off and picking up students.

Stage 3 Canberra Excursion Stage 3 participated in a famous rite of passage as they made the epic pilgrimage to Canberra in Week 1. They had spent all of Term 3 investigating and researching our political system and how our government runs the country. The time had come to experience all of this first-hand (with some other fun stuff thrown in too). The teachers were so blown away by their behaviour, respect, eagerness and knowledge during the excursion. We received numerous positive comments from tour guides, volunteers and even the bus driver on the impeccable manners and behaviour of our students throughout the excursion. It is just more evidence that we really have the best students in the world. We would like to thank the parents for providing your children this wonderful educational and social experience opportunity, as it is an adventure that they will remember forever. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government is contributing funding of $20 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. Please enjoy some recounts of their time in Canberra below. Kind regards, Andy Podmore Coordinator Canberra Student Recounts

Canberra by Max Canberra was AMAZING! There were so many good places to go and things to do. We started our trip on Wednesday at 6:00 am. There were so many people, probably about 44 people on the trip + 3 teachers. As soon as we got there, we went to a place with glassworks where we learnt about how glass is made and how different temperatures would affect the final product. After this, we went to a science place called C.S.I.R.O. We went around the place looking for information to answer questions and if we got it right we would get points. We could get 2-3 points each question. After all that we went to The War Memorial, across from Old Parliament House. We learnt about the people who served us in war and went to an educational fun room called the discovery room, where there were interactive displays, including a helicopter and what it was like to have trench foot! Then we went back to our hotels and had dinner and went to bed for Day 2. On day 2, we had to be up at 6:30am to get dressed and left at 8:15am for Parliament House. We did a roleplay in the House of Representatives and learnt about passing a bill and the differences between the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Then we went to the Old Parliament House and learnt all about the Senate room and how the place has changed over the years. After that we departed for laser tag. It was so fun! Then we had dinner, which the pasta was amazing Then we departed for Mount Ainslie which up there it was 3 degrees and it was freezing! On day 3, we went to Questacon and went to many different rooms. The gift shop there was also very cool. Then we went to the Australian Institute of Sport (A.I.S) where we learnt all about sport and the Olympics. Then we went on the bus back home and on the bus we did this painful lollipop challenge, where we had to hold a lollipop for like 1 hour for a treat. Canberra by Tahli Canberra was awesome!!! Canberra, there is millions or trillions of things to do there. You never ever get bored in Canberra!!! We had so many things to explore in Canberra. It was so fun even the trip on the way back home!!! I loved it. Firstly, on the way to Canberra, I didn’t actually go with all the other kids because I had to go to Regionals Athletics. I represented the school for shot put. I set my own personal best throwing 8.56 metres. After regionals I arrived at the accommodation at Eaglehawk Hotel. I arrived right when we were about to have dinner. After dinner Alastair showed me my cabin. I was with Max, Zane, Al, Lucas, Oscar and Joe. Secondly, after we woke up we went to our yummy breakfast. Once we finished breakfast we caught the coach to the New Parliament House were we saw real parliament in action. And we learnt where everybody sat and we learnt how it works in both the Senate and House of Representatives. Soon after, we went to the education centre where we learnt about voting and government. After this, we went to the Old Parliament House where we did a roleplay and learnt where everybody sat in the senate. Then we played laser tag were I smashed everybody including Mr Podmore and Mr Rattray. I came 7th, 1st and 1st . After we went to Mt Ainslie were we had a whole view of Canberra, where my cousins came to see me. Finally, we went to Questacon, where we learnt about a ton of science stuff and we even went to the gift shop and went on the epic giant slide. Then we went to the AIS we played on some of the training simulators. They would track the speed and accuracy of a kick and there were bikes and a lot more. On the way back we had a painful challenge of holding a lollipop above our head and whoever could hold it above their head got a prize. Vic was in the grand final and I was sitting behind him and I just bit his lollipop out of his hands so he lost. Canberra was the best camp ever. I learnt a lot of science things, a lot of government things and even saw parliament in action. I never on the whole camp got bored in any way. It was so fun. I liked everything apart from sleeping.

GATS Camp At the end of term 3, from Tuesday 24 to Friday 27 six Stage 3 students attended the Central Coast Gifted and Talented overnight camp at Point Wolstoncroft Sport and Recreation Centre. This camp included 180 students from all over the Central Coast. The below students were selected by Stage 3 teachers for specific subject areas that they shine in. Here are some words from our students about the camp: Isabel L (Drama) – ‘I made so many friends at GAT camp. It was great.’ Ben B (Visual Arts) – ‘It was so fun. All the art, free time in the cabins and the activities were great.’ Eliza B (Visual Arts) – ‘GAT camp was extremely fun for my creative mind. All the art was fabulous!’ Tahli F (Environmental Science) – ‘GAT camp was fun. I made a lot of friends, even a group of friends. On the last day it did get gross (dissecting). But the food and accommodation was good.’ Will C (Mathematics) – ‘I enjoyed the whole experience, especially the activities and FOOD.’ Alex ML (Sports Science) – ‘GAT camp was really fun. I met lots of new friends and learned a lot about Sports Science. My favourite activity was the high ropes.’ Myself and Mrs Keyes were part of the GATS Camp committee and helped organise and run the event. We were lucky enough to attend the camp and witness our students in action! They demonstrated Excellence, Respect and Responsibility while representing our school and had a fantastic time. What an experience to remember. Miss Metcalfe and Mrs Keyes

Cupcake Fundraiser

Thank you to everyone for supporting our cupcake stall the end of last term. Thanks also to Year 6 for providing such a wonderful spread of cakes for our students to purchase. We raised $614.55 which will go towards the Year 6 Farewell. KINDERGARTEN 2020 Kindergarten 2020 Orientation will commence on Tuesday 29 October at 9.15am in the Kindy classroom. Parent information session will take place at 10am in K block. Look forward to welcoming all new and existing families and students to Pretty Beach Public School. Mrs Gordon Kinder Orientation Coordinator Lost Property We have had this large number of unclaimed school jackets in lost property since last term. As they did not have names on them we were unable to return them to their owner. These have been washed and added to the clothing pool. To prevent this from continuing to happen can you please ensure your child’s property is labelled with their name. Not only their jackets and hats but also lunch boxes and drink bottles. We will then be able to return the items. Thanks for your support with this. STEM Share Film Kit

The stem.T4L project provides trial kits, resources, professional learning and support to all schools across NSW Education. The stem.T4L project empowers schools to teach students the skills they need to solve the problems of tomorrow.

Last year students had the opportunity of using the ‘Tablet Robotics’ kit, which was engaging and lots of fun. As part of Technology this term, teachers will be implementing the ‘Film Kit’ through Years K-6. The kit is designed for students to engage with ICT General capabilities and multimedia creation and STEM concepts through filming based technology. Teachers are very excited to kick off lessons with their students What’s been happening in 1/2 Red We have had a wonderful start to Term 4 with so much learning and exploration taking place within our classroom. This term, we are exploring “Water Works” in Science and “Celebrations” In History. So far we have explored our school surrounding, finding water sources and also looked at types of celebrations our families celebrate. We had a fantastic time last week during our visit to Healthy Harold, where we explored the topics about how to regulate our feelings, what happens when we feel nervous and how to keep healthy. SAKG This week in the kitchen we made Apple Donuts! We used Granny Smiths and Pink Ladies and created donut shapes using our knife skills as well as an apple corer. We then iced our donuts with yoghurt and cream cheese and added sprinkles to finish them off. The kids loved creating and eating these delicious, healthy snacks.
