Term 2 Week 3 - Floraville Public School

Term 2 Week 3 Principals Message What a wonderful day was at Broadmeadow Race Course on Saturday. The sun shone, the bets were on and the fashions were stunning in the Floraville Race Day function room. We are indeed lucky to have such an active and creative P&C Fundraising Committee led by the very capable Caroline Armstrong. This valued fundraising event can only be made possible with the support of our sponsors who each sponsor a race. We are so grateful for their ongoing commitment to the school, it is because of this support base that we are able to purchase air-conditioning units, smart boards and classroom based resources. Thank you so much to our long term supporters; Intellipower (Tim Allen), AB Scrap Metal (Adam Burns), Sleepzone (Millington family), Corey Roberts Concreting, Parmenter and Jiear Constructions, I.R Taylor (Ian Taylor), Ray White Real Estate, Belmont (Mitten family), and to our newer friends JAG Flooring (thanks Michelle Muddle). The Dance2bfit Program is up and running and the students have had their first lesson. It was a delight to watch Kindergarten learning their Brittany Spears „Circus‟ routine last week, complete with dancing clowns, ringmasters, tight - rope walkers and muscle-men! This is a quality dance program for all of our students and it certainly looks like fun. On Thursday we had a lovely Mother‟s Day celebration with the Kindergarten mum‟s. We listened to a guest speaker on the topic of „Being a Mum‟ and then went off to enjoy Mother‟s Day activities. There were some beautiful crowns made and some lovely fingernail painting going on. Then mums and their children enjoyed a picnic on the front grass to finish off the day. The Kindersthought it was „so exciting‟ to have their mums at school for the day and I‟m sure the mother‟s left feeling spoilt and special. Our classes have settled in well to their new classrooms and we are all getting used to our brand new facilities. The students have been very sensible in abiding by new „out of bounds‟ rules and we are all very keen to see our beloved „flat‟ finished with new lawn and landscaping. Weather permitting, the lawn should be laid sometime this week but we will need to give it some rest time before we can play on it. This week our Year 3 and 5 students are sitting their NAPLAN assessment. Our students are very well prepared for this series of assessments that serves as an opportunity for our students to celebrate learning, in that they are able to show what they have learnt at school so far. We wish our students all the best. Ms Oxenford returns to school tomorrow from long service leave and she assures us that she is keen to get back to see the lovely students at Floraville Public School. Mrs Saurins Relieving Principal

Positive Affirmation – Persistence

This week‟s affirmation is “wherever you go, go with all your heart‟‟ (Confucius). This affirmation is about Persistence. It tells us that we have choices in life and that whatever we choose to do we should do it with all our

heart. For example if you play a sport like soccer, if you only do it with half a heart, then are you doing the right thing????? Choose what you love to do and DO IT WITH ALL YOUR HEART!!!!!! I have often been accused of thinking too much. In some situations I find these thinking skills useful. At other times, I realise that such deep thought can often lead to worry. Why do we worry about the things we can‟t change or have no control over? At Floraville we teach the children about the Catastrophe Scale and Howbadzzat? We try to help them to retain their perspective. What is the worst thing that could happen? Okay, they may not do as well as they would like in a test for example, but the sun will still rise tomorrow, regardless of how well they do. Keeping perspective is a life skill that we all need to practise. Michael Grose, a parenting educator, writes “the most resilient children are those who rise to meet rather than retreat from the challenges presented to them.” If we were to view this positively in relation to this week‟s NAPLAN tests they are a good learning experience rather than a dreaded test to worry unnecessarily over. Good luck to all of our students who take the NAPLAN tests this week. Remember it is the importance of trying your best each and every day at school that will count the most towards your future. Similarly, thank you to our whole school staff who on a daily basis provide the best quality education for our student community. Year 5 Opportunity Class Placement for 2012

The DET has advised that the Opportunity Class Placement Test will be conducted on Wednesday 27 July 2011. Should you wish to apply for a placement for your child please apply online at www.schools.nsw.edu.au/ocplacement The closing date to apply is 20 May 2011. These placements are available to students who are currently in Year 4 (Year 5 2012). Should you seek further information please contact the school or visit the aforementioned website. Scary Cake Day Reminder

In last week‟s bulletin we highlighted the outstanding achievement of Jack Ireland in making the Australian Championships for swimming. This Friday the Year 6 students will be organising a cake stall to raise funds to support Jack. Cakes will range in cost starting at 20cents. Please allow your child to purchase some cakes on the day for this good cause. Welcome back

Tomorrow we welcome back Ms Oxenford from her overseas holiday and trust that she has had a wonderful, relaxing time. I thank her for the opportunity to take on the role of Relieving Deputy and appreciate the time spent working with Mrs Saurins in her role as Relieving Principal. One should never judge another, until we have walked in their shoes...... Mrs Jenny White – Assistant Principal

School News Curriculum Mathematics As you are aware, the school is conducting an audit of times tables skills across Years 3-6. This Term we will be

targeting Year 4 students. The results of current assessments have been recorded in a data base so that we have up

to date information about which students need support in this area.

Teachers do teach times tables as appropriate to grade development (see below), but problems arise when students do

not take responsibility for their learning. Students who have been identified as not knowing their tables proficiently

enough to function well in their grade will be given a letter to alert parents to the specific problem areas. It would be

fantastic if parents could spend some time helping their child/ren practise and in particular send clear messages of the

importance of knowing our tables. Parents are also in a much better position to demand that their children know it!

Students who have been identified will be asked to come to Mrs Roach‟s room one day a week (grade based) to

practise their tables. They will then be offered an opportunity after a fortnight to re-sit the assessment and the data base

will be adjusted accordingly.

Our students know that we are doing this because we care about them, in particular their capacity to move forward in

the mathematics syllabus.

Please refer to the following table that outlines when our students should know their tables:

By the end of Year 2 – 2x, 5x and 10x

By the end of Year 3 – 4x, 3x and 6x

By the end of Year 4 - 7x, 8x and 9x

Year 5 and 6 - should know all of their tables and be able to recall them quickly

Please help us to cement the idea that knowing your times tables is VITAL!

NAPLAN testing

National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy testing will take place on Tuesday 10, Wednesday 11 and

Thursday 12 May. Every year, all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are assessed on the same days using national tests in

reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The results help determine if

students are reaching important educational outcomes. More information: www.nap.edu.au

Walk safely to school

On Friday 20 May, leave the car at home and walk, ride, bus or train the kids to school safely as part of Walk Safely to

School Day. The day promotes fitness, road safety, public transport and the environment. For more information for

student writing competitions and healthy breakfast ideas go to: www.walk.com.au

School Community To....Build Self Worth

This week don‟t compare yourself to others. So much of our culture is frenetic and false, so it‟s crazy to measure

yourself against other crazy people – it leads to anxiety and stress. Make your own rules: not in a reactive way but just

say, “I need to find what works for me and let others do whatever they need.” By psychologist Cynthia Hickman

NEWS FROM KINDERGARTEN

Last Thursday 5th May, Kindergarten invited a special lady in their lives

to share some exciting Mother‟s Day activities with them at school. The

ladies listened to our guest speaker Karen Maciver as she told of the

trials and tribulations of life as a single mum. Karen inspired our mums

and some shed a few tears as they empathised with her. Following that

the special ladies watched the Kinder children enjoying our fabulous

Dance2bFit program. Then we moved to the classrooms for some

pampering: massages, nail

painting, face painting, brooch

making, card and frame making

and tiara creating. All the visitors

enjoyed the experience and the children

had big smiles on their faces as they spent

an enjoyable few hours spoiling their

special person. Thank you to the parents

who sent in fruit for the delicious fruit cups

which we enjoyed on the grass at the front

of the school as part of our picnic lunch.

We hope all the mums had a great Mother‟s Day on Sunday.

Lexile Legends

This week, we have two Lexile Legends as it was too difficult to split. They are two of our new students and what‟s more amazing is that English is their second language. They have read over 240 books since the beginning of the school year. Congratulations to Anthony Garofalo and Laura Garofalo. Your persistence in reading is truly inspirational.

Read More in May and WIN!

This month is National Family Reading Month. All students are invited to enter a Scholastic Book Fairs Competition which will give you an opportunity to win $250 worth of books as well as $1000 worth of books for the school library. If your child hasn‟t had a chance to enter during library lessons it is very simple.

Go to http://scholastic.com.au/schools/bookfairs/promos/

1. Pledge to read more in May.

2. Enter your contact details.

3. Submit your entry.

We‟ll also be celebrating the completion of National Family Reading Month by holding a book fair here at school. It‟s a

wonderful way to build your own home library, while supporting our school library.

Keeping Reading Cool

So your 10-year-old can read, but how often are they reading and are they extending themselves in their reading?

As a parent, it is important to adopt a number of strategies to ensure your pre-teen/early teen continues to read in the lead up to high school. Consider these suggestions:

Within a busy family day it is important to preserve reading time. For older kids with active lives and lots of entertainment diversions, this might mean allowing lights to stay on a bit longer so that your child can read before sleep and encouraging books and magazines to be taken out on sports days, car trips, anywhere where there is a bit of 'down' time.

Keep your child reading by setting a family role model of reading. Read and discuss books as a family, even if it is just the novelisation to the latest blockbuster movie they have seen.

Allow your child to 'choose' their reading material and set up a bookshelf for their selections in their bedroom. Not everyone wants to read the classics! Bookstores, libraries and Book Club all provide a wide range of genres--the important thing is that your child has selected it themselves. Once your child has 'hit' on a series they like, encourage them to collect the series.

Encourage reading around interest areas. If your child likes fast-paced action, there are many adventure series that utilise the concept of speed and escape from danger such as the Alex Rider series or Conspiracy 365.

Sport Macquarie Cup Soccer

Soccer began last week with our players enjoying some tremendous weather to start the season. Mr Kuchling‟s teams

played St Benedicts and looked a very strong team. Both teams were great in attack and dominated their first halves

however we were unable to capitalise on our skills. Our juniors lost 2-0, and our seniors went down 3-2 despite a late

fight-back. Mr O‟Shannessy‟s teams began the season in outstanding form. The juniors played outstanding football,

exhibiting some intuitive passing and determined defence to win their match. His seniors also played fantastically well

and were able to secure a draw.

Zone Cross Country

Congratulations to our cross country athletes. The first four place-getters from last term‟s carnival will attend a zone

carnival this Friday at Barton Oval from 9:30am. Each child will be presented with a Floraville singlet and an

identification tag. Our representatives are Trudi Peterson, Emma Judd, Jessie Marquett, Taylah Cole, Tom Hitchcock,

Daniel Perks, Sam Glover, Calay Campbell, Breanna Steadman, Jazmyn Robards, Pascal Jones, Camryn Rose, Zane

Huybers, Mitchell Bartley, Adam Woodger, Buddy Botham, Kayla Steadman, Jessica Noble, Sophie Tabrett, Gemma

Roberts, Angus Foley, James Johnson, Yoey Wahabzadah, Jet Randall, Holly Perks, Madeleine Towers, Olivia

Urquhart, Lily Robards, Maleik Steadman, Bradley Fletcher, Max Foley and Brett Stevens.

In order to select a NSW representative Track & Field

team for this event the NSWPSSA will be holding a special selection trial. Event: NSWPSSA Selection Trial for 2011 Representative Team Venue: Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre, Homebush Date: Friday 1st July, 2011

Participation at these trials will be via a formal application to NSWPSSA and athletes MUST compete at this event to achieve selection in the 2011 NSW representative team. An entry fee will be applicable for successful athletes. AGE ELIGIBILITY: Participants must be in at least their tenth year (turning ten during the year of competition) in order

to compete at a School Sport Australia Championship as per School Sport Australia policy. All athletes must submit an application using the form provided and include an official time, distance or height that meets the qualifier listed below for application to each event. Macquarie Cup Netball

Last week Floraville had an awesome week at Macquarie Cup netball. Senior A – after seeing a very tall St Benedicts the girls got off to a slow start. They are to be congratulated on their persistence and growing confidence. When they realised that height doesn‟t matter the girls began to find good rhythm. Well done girls on defeating St Benedicts 20 – 11.

Senior B – the girls got off to a convincing start with a strong lead in the first quarter. They continued to develop their teamwork and defeat St Francis Xavier 26 – 1. Congratulations. Junior A – played against St Marys in a nail biting game. The scores were very level for most of the game. When we remembered to pass forward up the court, we were unstoppable and displayed great teamwork. Well done girls in defeating them 6 – 5. Junior B – the girls played Charlestown East and displayed that training and hard work really makes a difference. They were breaking in front and trying to spread out. This gave the girls confidence and allowed them to win 5 – 3. Great work! Miss Wand and Mrs Chesterfield Girls Softball

Last Thursday the Softball Girls had another amazing game, this time against Belmont Primary School. Belmont had some fierce pitching and fielding. This was no match for the awesome dexterity of Floraville. In just a few months our girls have come from a mixture of abilities to a well functioning team, able to exercise precise plays, but also understand the intricacies of forward thinking needed in a softball game. Their boundless ability to hit a ball brought the final score to a whopping 25 to 6. Lani Fuller and Trudi Peterson smashed a homerun each accompanied with RBIs, a feet not easily accomplished by the best of players. This brilliant win sees us to round three of our knockout competition, where we will be playing either Redhead or Marks Point.

Nice hats!!!.... Trudi and Taylah

Jake Foster has been wowing the

crowd

at the State Tennis Carnival-

congratulations

Jake.

Tips for Parents Contacting the school

You can visit, phone or email to discuss any matter that concerns you. Telephone interpreters can be provided by calling 13 1450. We all know that parenting is challenging. Every parent struggles from time to time with every day issues or more complex ones. We know that because we have spoken to close to 10,000 parents in the last 12 months. The State Government funded helpline, Parent Line NSW (managed by CatholicCare) provides a unique free support service to parents across NSW. Highly skilled professional counsellors are available 24 hours a day 7 days a week to take calls from parents and carers about any parenting issue, from tips on how to manage the morning routine, to concerns about distant adolescents to complex challenges of living in blended families. It is the only free counselling service available to parents during any part of their parenting journey, at any time of the day or night, any where in NSW. It‟s convenient because parents can call when it suits them, they don‟t have to arrange child care to talk to a professional counsellor and they can call as many times as they need. As Parent Line is a not for profit organisation, and our funds go primarily into direct service, we always struggle to get the word out to parents about this unique support that is available to them. We are hoping that your school will support us in getting awareness about Parent Line out to your school community. We have a website for parents, carers and professionals ( www.parentline.org.au ) with a range of tip sheets for parents about contemporary issues facing families today, some parenting stories written by our counselling team that normalise parenting challenges and some links to other NSW wide services. Many schools in NSW already have a link to our website on their website and many schools regularly print our parenting article in their newsletters. We are particularly focusing on rural and remote families currently, as our recent statistics tell us that families from these areas of NSW are less likely to contact us with a small issue and tend to manage things along until there is a major crisis (like a child running away or violent behaviour of the child). We have free promotional items that we can send out to you – fridge magnets, posters and pamphlets. Please feel free to email us on [email protected] or contact our administration office on 8968 1102. Our telephone counselling line is 1300 1300 52 and is available for the cost of a local call from a land line.

Community Information Parenting Children With Eczema ARE YOU Challenged by your child’s ECZEMA? The University of Queensland is conducting research into parenting children with eczema. Parenting a child with eczema presents many challenges (everything from the daily application of creams and avoiding eczema triggers, to more general parenting tasks). The aim of this study is to understand the factors that make the management of childhood eczema particularly difficult, and to use this information to develop strategies that might assist parents in managing their child’s eczema. If you are a parent of a 3 to 10-year-old child with eczema, we would love to hear from you! By sharing your experiences (confidentially), you will be making a valuable contribution to the development of much-needed childhood eczema management strategies for parents.
