TERM 2 Week 8 Principal’s Report Health and Safety While teaching and learning is our core business at Floraville, nothing is more important to us than the safety of our students and staff. A school Health & Safety team meet throughout the year to review matters in this regard. Please be aware of a few current items, below. Emergency Management Prior to the end of term, the school will be undertaking an evacuation drill as part of our Emergency Management Plan. While students receive instruction in the correct procedures, practise is important in developing familiarity with school routines. If you are on site at the time of the evacuation, please comply with directions from staff. A Health & Safety briefing brochure is available in the front office. Colds & Flu In the early weeks of winter, colds and flu have been quite prevalent. While we would love our students to attend school every day, please keep your child at home if they are unwell. Staying home allows the child to rest and recover, while reducing the spread of sickness within the class. School Property Works As listed below, a number of property works are due to commence on the school site. While these works contribute to school improvement, it is important for students and visitors to observe safety notifications. Temporary fencing will be installed in the relevant areas, with instruction not to enter the work sites. Property Update Bottom Playground - on Monday morning I will be attending a start-up meeting for these works. The school has been collaborating with the P&C for a number of years to improve the play area in this part of the school. A levelled play space, with tiered, sandstone retaining walls, will provide an excellent facility for outdoor play. Northern Boundary Fence – works are due to commence shortly for a security fence along the northern boundary, and also at the southern entrance to the school. This will enable greater site security over the weekend. Tree maintenance – the annual tree inspection was recently completed with some minor works identified for action. Riley M (4/5A) can be extremely proud of his achievements. He has been working very hard and his effort is evidenced in his class work. Well done, Riley! Last Day to Pay Tomorrow is the last day for students to pay for the athletics carnival. Payments after Thursday will not be accepted.

Thank you to our school community for purchasing from our cake stall last Friday. Ben and his family are very appreciative of your support. Also a big thank you to our Year 4 families for donating treats to sell. A number of Ben’s friends from Year 5 also donated treats. What a community effort!

This week’s virtue is CO-OPERATION: Co-operation is working together and sharing the load. When we cooperate, we join with others to do things that cannot be done alone. We are willing to follow the rules which keep everyone safe and happy. Together we can accomplish great things.

Explicit lessons in the 3 M’s of Public Speaking: Matter, Method and Manner are enabling students to improve their speaking skills and develop their confidence. Public speaking can seem like a daunting task for anyone and so we are especially proud of the efforts made by our children to research, prepare, practise, refine and present their own speeches to an audience. This process will facilitate ongoing learning and skills that should stick with them for life. We look forward to hearing every student ‘bring their words to life!’ Good luck, everyone!
