Hello KSPS families, Welcome to Week 10! This term has zoomed by and a lot of great things have been accomplished thus far. I am very proud of the efforts of ALL students as I am sure those of you who have come along to the three-way conferences this week would agree with me. This year we have 34% of our students sharing their progress and negotiating their learning goals with families and their teacher. It is great for families to be part of their childs education and involved in their learning; remember you dont need to wait to be invited to come in and discuss your childs progress or what supports you can provide to assist them in their learning journey. You can contact teachers at any time and ask for a meeting to check in on how they are going. Last Friday KSPS participated in Earth Hour for the first time. We turned off all lights, fans, aircons and electronic devices and headed outside to engage with the natural environments. It was fantastic to see everyone out and about participating in a range of activities either reinforcing the importance of looking after our planet and cutting down the use of electricity or simply just enjoying the benefits of an outside classroom/learning space. Classes built habitats out of natural resources, used the environment for a number of maths activities, and were creative with sculptures and art activities. A big thank you to Miss Corvino and Miss Grieves for promoting the environmental awareness this year across their lessons and involving students in these important whole school initiatives. There are a lot more exciting events and ideas coming our way . Our school choir headed off for another combined Katherine Schools BEAT rehearsal today. The group of students from years 4-6 under the guidance and expertise of Mrs. Righton have been working extremely hard learning all the songs required for the performance in June. Make sure you keep the date free – Thursday 20 th June - this years theme is Strong Voices and promises to be spectacular . Well done to the mighty Stuart House for winning the privilege of attending the CARE Reward on Monday! Stuart have cashed in the most number of tokens at the CARE Shop this term and will be the house team reaping the reward. Well done Stuart! Based on the great success of previous years, Katherine South Primary School will again be entering two netball teams in the town netball competition. There is a lot of interest and notes have gone home today. Please ensure these are filled in and your registration is complete to ensure your child has the opportunity to play. Thank you to Miss Grenfell and Miss Corvino for coordinating and coaching the netball this year. We have had our first email from Kite and Stella on their overseas adventure, have a read of their news and look at the amazing photos. Read along to our first edition of ‘The Adventures of Kite and Stella’. Hi Miss Taylor, We’re having an amazing adventure! We did a 4 day mountain trek in Nepal. It was tiring walking up steep hills but the view was worth it! We were lucky to be in Nepal for Holi festival. Everyone got covered in bright coloured dyes, particularly Stella! After Nepal we went to India. It was very crowded and there were children begging. It was sad to see poverty. Women in India wear bright coloured saris. We caught an overnight train to Varanasi and saw the fire ceremony on the edge of the river Ganges. Now we are in Lapland. There is so much snow! Today we went husky sledding and got to cuddled 3 week

old husky puppies. We also went taboganing. The food here is very different to Nepalese or Indian food. Mostly it is salmon and potatoes. We have 2 more days in Finland before we fly to England. I’ll email you an update when we’re

in London. I hope Everyone is well at KSPS! From Kite and Stella I am taking some leave next week to spend time with family. I hope you have a great end to the term and enjoy your holiday. I will see you all next term after your well deserved break. Karen Taylor Principal

Student Attendance Term 1 Week 9

Year 2 Hopkins have been busy writing procedures and our latest one was about ‘How to Hatch a Crocodile Egg!’ We have been learning about compound sentences and how to make them using conjunctions such as; ‘and’, ‘because’ and ‘then’. In maths we are learning about place value and numbers to 1000 as well as lots of different addition strategies and facts. Tomorrow we have a special guest coming to talk to us about being safe and unsafe. We look forward to seeing Constable Dani then! We have had a very busy term and look forward to more fun activities next term!

Last week the T-2 Art of the Week award went to Mia Taylor from Year 2 Hopkins. The artwork is on display in the Science/Art room window. The Year 2 students are currently studying different artworks and why they are made. Mia says, "We were studying an artist called Kandinsky who liked to draw bright colours and colours that stand out. We drew circles and we coloured them in using oil pastels". Well done Mia, we are very proud of your work! Miss Jess Corvino

This week the T-2 Art of the Week award goes to Ma Rica May from T/1 Righton. The artwork is on display in the Science/Art room window. The T/1 students have been learning about birds and habitats, and learning to identify birds in our schoolyard. Ma Rica May says, "I put brown on his body, black on his feet, and yellow on the front. It is a Kite. There is grass, a sun and sky." Well done Ma Rica May, we are very proud of your work! Miss Jess Corvino
