What is a target audience?

This term refers to a specific group of people within the target market of a movie who the film is aimed at. They are the people who can relate to and are engaged with the production.

Theses people can be, and usually are, classified by a certain age, gender and/or social class.

Why is knowing the target audience important?

In the film industry it is vital to know and appeal to the target audience of your movie because eventually they will be the people who watch and hopefully like your film. In order to produce a successful movie it is therefore essential to identify your target audience whilst still in the early stages of production because they will heavily influence the content of the film.

Quantum of SolaceThe target audience of this movie is an interesting one because it targets two very different age groups to the same degree. Although generally targeting 15-45+ year olds, this movie mainly targets teenagers and young adults as well as 45+ year olds (26% each). This is typical for Bond movies: The young audience watches the films for the action and high quality special effects whereas the older age group watches it because they have been watching Bond films since they were young. As one would expect of an action thriller like this one, it targets men to a much higher degree then women, in a 3/2 ratio. The reason for this is that the themes of this type of movie e.g. violence and fights do not appeal as much to women as to men.It is also noticeable that the target social class is quite a high one, targeting the ABC1 class to 72%. This is most likely due to the fact that it is the more sophisticated group of people that can relate well to a protagonist like James Bond who is usually seen wearing expensive suits, driving fast cars and drinking “shaken, not stirred” martini.

Bourne IdentityThis movie’s target audience is similar to the one of Quantum of Solace. Like the Bond film it mainly targets a young audience with 60% of the people who watched the film being 15-34. However, due to the fact that it is not as much of a cult-movie series as the Bond films are, it does not attract the older audience as much. The split between male and female audience on the other hand is very similar again, with 62% of the audience being male. This is most likely related to the main themes of this movie being violence, fights and revenge which are typically preferred by men. Finally, the targeted social class is similar to the one of the Bond film which is at first might be surprising because the Bourne movies do not feature wealth as much as the Bond films do. However the complex narrative of the Bourne movies might not appeal as much to lower social classes who normally prefer a simple, straightforward storyline with a strong focus on action.

InceptionThe target audience of this film is in some ways different to the previous two films. To begin with, the film mainly targets a young adult audience with nearly half the viewers between 15 and 24 years. The remaining audience is more or less evenly spread over the other age groups.Furthermore, the split between male and female viewers is very noticeable, being 50% each. A possible explanation for this is that Inceptions features two leading female roles (next to multiple male ones) making it a much more appealing experience for women than most other thrillers that mainly feature men as protagonists. Finally, the social class this film is targeted at is once more the ABC1 one with an 81% share. This is again referable to a very complex plot that is more appealing to the higher social classes.

Our thriller’s target audienceAge: Our movie would be targeted at a young audience between the age of 12 and 34. As we could see in the three analysis, thriller movies seem to especially appeal to young adults. Unlike James Bond, our movie does not have an established fan base which rules out the older viewers as target audience.

Gender: Unlike Inception, our movie does not feature any strong female characters which means that it will most likely not appeal to women as much as to men. We predict a 60/40 share between make and female audience (like James Bond and Bourne).

Social class: Because our movie only has a very small budget, we have to rely on a good narrative with plot twists instead of exciting special effects. This means that we will mostly be targeting the classes ABC1.
