Leone has worked in the TBPS office for 11 years. On behalf of all staff and students I wish Leone a long and happy retirement. Good Luck! We will miss you. Our Mother’s Day pamper day on Wednesday was a fantastic, fun event. I know all the Mums and Nanas who came along had a beautiful time having their hair and nails done or getting a lovely massage. It was also exciting for our kindergarten students who loved the opportunity to pamper and look after their loved ones. See our photographs on page 4. Congratulations to Margo Kovalevsky who had her baby in the holidays. Margo had a little boy who has been named Jackson. Last term I contacted Port Stephens Council and requested a Zebra Crossing be installed at the back gate to the school. Our P&C supported this request and wrote a letter to the council on our behalf asking that we have this road safety measure installed. Council have undertaken pedestrian and vehicle counts and have informed us that we do not meet the numerical warrant outlined in the Austroads Guide to Traffic Management for a pedestrian crossing or a children’s crossing. I have been advised by the Council’s Road Safety Officer to remind all parents on the need for children to hold an adult’s hand in the traffic environment until the age of 8 and to stay within close reach until the age of 10, both on the footpath and when crossing the road. Additionally, parents should not encourage children to the opposite side of the road to a waiting car. As part of the ‘Live Life Well’ strategy we have introduced a canteen committee which is a joint initiative between the P&C and staff. This committee will support the canteen manager in ensuring compliance with this government program and in the development of healthy menu options. I would also ask parents to have a think about what they are putting in their child’s lunch box every day and try to make sure that healthy options make up the majority of your child’s food. There is a lot of research to prove that children will learn more and stay on task longer when they feed their minds and bodies with the right food and drinks. One of our ongoing strategies in this area is Crunch and Sip, thanks to all of our families for their support of this health initiative. Please continue to send in a healthy snack of fruit and/or vegetables for your child to eat during our Crunch and Sip break in the morning. Also, please send in a bottle of water for them to keep on their desk so they can have a healthy drink option during their lessons. Another part of our strategy will be to provide health tips and recipe ideas in our newsletter from time to time. Health Encourage your child to drink lots of water instead of fizzy drinks. This helps with their metabolism and their general health. Encourage your child to snack on fruit and vegetables such as carrot sticks, watermelon, bananas and apples instead of chips and chocolate. This will teach them healthy eating habits for later life. Always have healthy snacks at home to decrease the temptation of having unhealthy ones. NAPLAN Next week our Years 3 & 5 students will sit the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy. NAPLAN is a State Wide Assessment and our students have performed well in these assessments in recent years. Good luck to all of our students participating in NAPLAN this year. Have a great weekend. Sports Report Last week the senior boys’ rugby league team travelled to Medowie to play Wirreanda P.S. After two quick tries to Wirreanda the boys were down 12-0. Showing great resilience and determination as Tanilba Bay P.S always does, the boys scored two fantastic tries to go into half time 12-12. Wirreanda started the second half with an early try. Once again the Tanilba Bay boys showed determination and scored a try to take the game into extra time. Wirreanda managed to score a try and went away victors. Tanilba Bay boys are now training hard for the Knights Knockout which will be held later this month. Keep up the great work boys.

Athletics Carnival The athletics carnival will be held this term, Friday of week 8. If you are turning 8 or older this year you will be eligible to participate on the day. Field event trials will be held each week during stage 2 and stage 3 sport. The top 6 qualifiers will advance to the finals which will be held on the athletics carnival for a spot in the zone team. Mr Gattenhof Canteen News A big thank you to our wonderful volunteers who help out in our canteen each week. We are desperately looking for volunteers to assist in the canteen on Mondays or Fridays. If you are available to help, please contact the school canteen or office staff. Students love seeing Mums, Dads and Grandparents helping out in the canteen! You will be provided with a light lunch, unlimited tea/coffee, good conversation and fun times! Early Stage 1 Even though it is only nine weeks, the term ahead will be a busy but rewarding term. Students have come back from holidays revitalised and ready to take it on. The teachers of ES1 have been busily preparing some fantastic and engaging units of work that involve learning about the sea. Please find the time to look at the ES1 page on the school website for a detailed overview of what ES1 students will be working towards this term. It is great to see that students are completing their homework each week and returning their home readers each day to help them on their way to achieving ES1 benchmarks. ES1 held the Mother’s Day Celebration this week. What a wonderful event this was! We saw lots of fabulous hairstyles and craft items being created and some of the special friends even got a hand or back massage from their child! A big thank you goes out to Mrs Sturgess for organising the event. Please see page 4 for photos of the event. Stage 1 The students in Stage 1 have settled into Term 2 extremely well and are already hard at work. In writing this term, we are using our creative minds to write some brilliant narratives. We are focusing on Aboriginal culture and we are discovering lots of

interesting and exciting information that we are going to use as part of our story writing. We have another busy term ahead in sport. Our focus in Term 2 is dancing. On Wednesday afternoons Stage 1 will be learning dances like the Nutbush, Macarena, Heel and Toe Polka and many other dance moves. All the teachers are looking forward to another fantastic term with our classes. Stage 1 Teachers 2/3G Welcome back to an exciting term 2. I am glad to see all my students back safely and enthusiastic to learn. NAPLAN preparations are continuing well with all students participating eagerly. This term for HSIE we will be focusing on “Australia You’re standing in it” and for Science, Mrs Hainzer will be looking at “Mini Beasts”. Our text type for English, to be commenced after NAPLAN, will be information reports which correlate nicely with our other KLA topics! Well done to Liam for receiving this week’s award based on the PBL expectation of “Friendly.” 3/4M and 3J Well done 3/4M and 3J. It has been very pleasing to see the way in which students have already settled back into school routines and are working hard in class to achieve their personal best results. During the term students will cover a variety of topics ranging from narrative writing to the “Australia You’re Standing in it” HSIE unit, as well as PBL lessons on the school wide expectation of ‘being friendly’. We would also like to remind parents and carers that next week the NAPLAN will be completed by students in Years 3 and 5 across all Australian schools. Good luck to all Tanilba Bay students who are undertaking these assessment tasks. Finally, we are looking forward to seeing as many parents and carers as possible for our Stage 2 assembly in week 5 which will be run by 3/4S. Congratulations to all 3/4M students who will be receiving their rocket reader badges from Mrs Hainzer at this assembly. We hope to see you all there. We are looking forward to a productive and rewarding term 2. Tim Marchant and Miss J

5D This term we are studying the narrative poem “The Highwayman”. The children have been working in groups to look at language, images, characters and emotion. They used the classic image of the poem to brainstorm words and phrases that they thought were appropriate for the image and tried to build a profile of the ‘Highwayman” character. As part of our profiling we also watched a short TV program piece from Horrible Histories. We have really been focusing hard on reading comprehension , grammar and writing skills. We are also working well in groups to discuss concepts and come up with ideas to share as a whole class. With the cold weather creeping in it would be wonderful if each child could supply a box of tissues for the classroom. Paper towel would also be helpful. Thank you to those parents who have previously provided these items.

Firstly, a massive thank you to everyone who supported our Easter Raffle! We had over 70 prizes this year, so thank you to the families who helped with donations of Easter eggs, it was great to see so many smiling faces when the students won a prize. All this fantastic effort helped us raise $1288.90 !! Bunnings BBQ We will be holding our BBQ at Taylors Beach Bunnings on Sunday May 18th. Why not call in and grab some lunch and support your school at the same time. Any volunteers that are available to help out please leave your contact details with the office and we will be in touch. Any time you can spare is welcomed. You are not required to be a member of the P&C, anyone can help. P&C Survey In the last newsletter we asked parents if they could fill out their preference on what was important to them and what you would like us to fundraise for. Limited copies have been returned so we are extending the due date to Monday 26Th May. These surveys will be tallied and taken to the P&C Meeting and discussed to decide on what we will raise funds for this year. Therefore, this is your chance to have your say. Another copy has been attached to this newsletter. We truly value your opinion. Uniform Shop Our uniform shop, located in the AV room is open Mondays 9am – 10am and on Wednesdays 2.30pm – 3pm. Don’t forget if you can’t make it on these days, you can also leave an order at the office and we will put it together for you next time the uniform shop is open and these can be sent home with your child. Next Meeting Our meetings are held on the last Thursday of each month at 3:15pm. Our next meeting will be Thursday 29th May in the library.

Sacraments of Reconciliation & First Holy Communion The Parish of St. Brigid’s, Raymond Terrace, including the Mass Communities of Mallabula, Medowie and Raymond Terrace, will shortly commence a Sacramental Programme to form and prepare those children who have already received the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the Sacraments of Confirmation and First Holy Communion. If you would like your child to participate, and you believe they are ready, you are invited to attend a Parent Information Evening on Wednesday 21st May at 7.30pm in the St Brigid’s School Hall. At this gathering, the timetable and process will be explained, and the children’s names and details taken. The Parish Sacramental Team, who oversees the practical running of the programme, currently consists of only two people who have put a lot of time and effort into the Sacramental preparation of your children. At the Parent Information Evening we will be seeking new people to join the Sacramental Team and continue this valuable and important ministry. It is critical that a number of parents be prepared to assist and become members of the Sacramental Team to ensure that the Sacramental Programme can continue in this parish. Anyone who would like to assist and be involved, but would like more information, please feel free to contact Bernadette Stellenberg by phoning her on 4932 1875 or email [email protected]

Messy church is a new approach to doing “church”. It is particularly designed for families who value doing things together, meeting others & enjoying life. We welcome the young & the young at heart - all age groups. There will be plenty of fun, messy crafts, games, music – lots of “doing things”. A basic meal will be provided. There will be a small cost of $5.00 per family to help with food expenses. Hope to see you there!! Contact Lynley Keers for more information 4982 4267

Have you heard about the new government dental scheme “Child Dental Benefits Schedule”? From January 1st 2014, it is providing eligible kids with $1000 to spend on selected dental services over a 2 calendar year period. This great initiative expects to help around 3.4 million Australian kids between the ages of 2-17 years. To benefit from this scheme, children must be eligible for Medicare and the family must be in receipt of Family Tax Benefit Part A or receive a relevant Government payment. Services that will be covered include: examinations, x-rays, cleaning, fissure sealing, fillings, root canals and extractions. Benefits will not be available for services carried out in hospital, or for orthodontic or cosmetic dental work. To see if your kids are eligible, call your local Dentist who can look up the information for you.
