Staff worked upto £32 billion ofunpaid overtimein 2014 a newanalysis has saidWORKERS put in almost £32 billionworth of unpaid overtime last year,averaging over £6,000 each, according toa new analysis.

The TUC said one in five people regu-larly worked extra hours f or no pay.

The total was slightly down on theprevious year, but the union organisa-tion repeated its call for employers tomake sure their staff were not workingexcessively long hours.

The study marked the TUC’s annualWork Your Proper Hours Day, whichshows the point when the average per-son who does unpaid overtime wouldstart getting paid if they worked alltheir unpaid hours at the start of theyear.

Unpaid overtime is more commonin the public sector (27.4 per cent of employees) than the private sector (18.5per cent), said the report.

Education benefits from the most

free work, with more than one million

people doing unpaid overtime, followedby health and social work (770,000), thescientific and technical sector (500,000),manufacturing (490,000) and wholesaleand retail (418,000).

People in their 40s are most likely todo unpaid overtime, with 26 per cent inthis age group putting in unpaid hours,compared to 20 per cent for all UK work-ers, the study found.

TUC general secretary FrancesO’Grady said: “Staff across Britain arecontinuing to work among the longesthours in Europe and are not even paidfor much of the extra time they put in.
