Is your company it to start usng the Ffor Work strategy when t s rolled out?PSHPC, one of the largest health and protec-tion advisers in the UK, has produced five toptips to help companies prepare their strategyfor Fit for Work, the government-funded initi-ative which is now being rolled-out nationallyto help individuals with a health conditioneither stay in work or return to it.

Beate O’Neil, head of wellness consultingat PSHPC, said: “Few organisations have atrue understanding of what the Fit For Workinitiative is, and even fewer have started todevelop a strategy to integrate it with theirexisting occupational health provision. Oncean employee has reached, or is expected toreach, four weeks of sickness absence, theirGP will refer them to Fit for Work for anassessment by a health professional, so howwill companies deal with any Fit for Work

recommendations on sick employees thatmight come their way? PSHPC have collatedfive useful suggestions for companies toconsider.”

The firm’s recommendations are:1. Ensure your company has a robust

absence management policy in place. Thisgives you the ability to refer sick employeesto occupational health – whether that is yourown occupational health provider or a third

party – within your chosen timeframes andaccording to your policy. If you chose to referto your own occupational health, rather thanutilise Fit for Work, set your referral triggerearlier than their four week timescale. Yourabsence management policy should alsomake clear to employees what the company’sapproach will be if they decline to be referredin this way.

2. Inform/train line managers about howthe new Fit For Work service works and howthey will need to respond to it. They willneed to put the right measures in place toeffectively work with Fit for Work reports onsick employees. For instance, when a reportarrives, the line manager needs to decide if they should contact HR immediately, take onthe return to work process with the indi-

vidual directly or contact the Fit For Workpractitioner who wrote the report if furtherdiscussion/information is required.

3. Establish guidelines for storing em-ployee reports. These will contain personal,sensitive data that is covered under the DataProtection Act 1998, which governs how suchdata should be held and processed. Compa-nies need to inform their line managers whatto do with the report, where to save it and

how to store it – storage in an open public

folder is not acceptable. The storage of suchinformation should be secure, so ideally linemanagers should forward the report to theirHR department.

4. Consider how you will treat the £500 taxallowance that companies are being offeredfor medical treatment recommended by occu-pational health or Fit For Work. Will you payfor treatment aimed at returning employeesto work, or not? Whatever you decide you
