Nepotism and costof living are still bigfactors in getting a job, survey shows

The cliché ‘it’s not what you know but whoyou know’ is alive and well – and depress-ingly so in 21st century Britain – accord-ing to a report published by the Debrett’sFoundation.

Debrett’s – known for being the arbiter of rules for social etiquette (and publisher of the first guide for the ruling classes in 1769),launched its foundation in 2014, with the aimof ensuring high achievers from underprivi-leged backgrounds enter the world of work.But, in its survey of more than 5,000 people,Debrett’s found that social mobility hasbarely changed si nce the 18th century.

It found 72 per cent of children from privi-leged backgrounds admitted to using familyconnections to secure work placements. Italso found London was the top destinationfor 32 per cent of those that had attendedprivate schools. This compares to only 15 per

cent of underprivileged children seekingwork experience in the capital.

The research found 25 per cent of all youngpeople felt the system for getting workplacements and internships in Britain was“unfair”, with 47 per cent of poorer childrensaying they didn’t apply for work experiencein London because of the cost.

Joanne Milner, chief executive at Debrett’s,said: These findings reveal securing the rightwork experience placement is difficult, butconsiderably more so if young people don’thave the right connections.

“While nepotism isn’t any more widespreadthan it was in the past, it has a greater im-pact today. When there are so many candi-dates for the top graduate jobs, it follows thatthose with the best experience have a betterchance of securing them.”

According to ONS figures published lastNovember, the average intern receives barely£100 per week, making work experience

increasingly unavailable toall but those with parents whocan afford to support themthroughout this period.

In fact, Debrett’s foundinternships were becomingmore expensive to take partin. Graduates, it found, nowhave to go through an average

of seven placements before they land theirfirst job. For 10 per cent, the number was ashigh as 15 placements.

Milner said: “We don’t want Intern Britainto have anegativeimpact on thediversity of future leaders
