Rise Against Hunger Event Wednesday, October 9 For the last two years, FBC Greenwood has helped pack meals for Rise Against Hunger. The obvious benefit is that hungry people get fed, but that is far from being the only positive effect. By packing these meals, our church is fulfilling its mission of being Jesus’ hands. What’s more, Rise Against Hunger may be the most fully and joyfully intergenerational thing we do at FBC. After hosting a meal-packing event in 2017 and 2018, we got two pieces of clear feedback: (1) We should do it again! (2) We should consider finding a time other than Advent, which tends to be very busy. So this year our ministry team and Missions Committee have scheduled our Rise Against Hunger event for the Wednesday evening following World Communion Sunday. I find the symbolism very appealing: on Sunday, October 6, we will join Christians around the world in celebrating Holy Communion; following the service we will gather in the fellowship hall for FBC’s annual love feast, and we will enjoy cuisine from cultures around the world. On Wednesday, October 9, we will pack meals and help feed some of the world’s hungry people. Our goal this year is to pack18,000 meals. You can sign up by calling the church office (229-5557) or by completing the form which is both online (www.fbcgwd.com) and in the Sunday order of worship. We are asking folks to sign up by Wednesday, October 2. For those who wish to eat at church that night, we will have meals catered by Chick-fil-A. Please make sure you sign up if you want supper at church-- we will not order any extra meals. If you have permanent reservation and do not plan to eat at the church that night, please cancel the reservations. Are you praying for your church? It may seem an odd question-- odd because prayer is such an obvious component in the lives of churches and Christians. But I imagine we’ve all experienced how easy it is for our practice of prayer to get lost in the shuffle of busy schedules and hectic lives. This past Sunday, we had Jay Kieve, Coordinator of CBFSC, spend some time with our Search Committee. He covered some practical matters in a very helpful way, but mostly what we did was pray. Jay reminded us that searching for a minister is as much a matter of discernment as it is decision-making. So I invite you to join us in praying for our search process. Then I began to think about some of the other things which I hope you pray about regularly: Our present staff-- we certainly need your prayers. Our many lay leaders and volunteers, without whom FBC could not fulfill its mission or carry out its ministries. Our 150th Anniversary, which will take place in 2020. Pray especially about what we can do for our community that will demonstrate our gratitude for God’s many blessings to our church. Our giving-- as prayer can diminish when we are busy, giving can lost in the shuffle of bills and vacations and other expenses. Make sure that regular giving is part of your prayer life and your discipleship. Spiritual gifts and service-- as our mission statement says, the essence of Christian living is using our spiritual gifts to serve others in the name of Jesus.

Rise Against Hunger Event

Wednesday, October 9

For the last two years, FBC Greenwood has helped pack meals for Rise Against Hunger.

Then I began to think about some of the other things which I hope you pray about regularly:

Our present staff-- we certainly need your prayers. Our many lay leaders and volunteers, without whom FBC could not fulfill its

mission or carry out its ministries. Our 150th Anniversary, which will take place in 2020. Pray especially about

what we can do for our community that will demonstrate our gratitude for God’s many blessings to our church.

The Nominations and Lay Leadership Committee

is Looking for You!

Each January, a third of the members of each of the thirteen church committees rotate off (after serving a three-year term). One of the tasks assigned to the Nominations and Lay Leadership Committee is to secure new members for committees. If you would be willing to serve on a committee, contact David Jennings by phone (229-5557) or by email at [email protected]. The following is a list and description of the First Baptist Church committees for which the Nominations and Lay Leadership Committee are seeking to fill. Children’s Committee: plans activities and

events for children and their families Church Visitation Committee: maintains

contact with members on the Caring for Friends list

Congregational Life Committee: provides meals or refreshments for special events

Heritage Committee: maintains the Betty (Beeka) Wise Coleman Heritage Room and adds historically significant items as appropriate

Missions Committee: plans Operation Inasmuch and maintains contact with GFBC mission partners

Outreach and Membership: contacts visitors and plans visitor/new member breakfast and luncheon each year

Personnel Committee: addresses matters related to church ministerial and support staff

Property Committee: oversees and maintains the building and grounds

Spiritual Formation Committee: plans events related to the spiritual formation and growth of church members

Stewardship Committee: oversees the church’s finances

Worship Committee: maintains the chancel, assists in baptisms, responsible for matters related to the sound system

Youth Committee: plans activities and events for youth and their families

September 29, Music Recognition Sunday. Make note that on September 29 the children, youth, and adult choirs will lead in music and worship. Being present when the choirs are recognized expresses gratitude for the music that has been part of the worship in the church through the years and shows love and appreciation to everyone involved in the music ministry today. The congregation is the largest choir in the worship service so invite family and friends to join with you in song!

Remember also, September 22 is Senior Adult Sunday with the Sounds of Grace Senior Adult Choir leading the music. October 27 is Youth Recognition Sunday with The Voices of Grace Youth Choir leading the music. - David Corbitt

Reminder to Parents: Children will practice during the CIA hour on October 16. Parents, please encourage your child to participate and help your child practice at home.
