Announcements for Sunday, September 29, 2013 St. Matthew’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Wauwatosa www.stmattslutheran.org We welcome each of you to worship. Everyone is precious in the Lord’s sight. Thank you for blessing us with your presence. May you be as blessed by your time here as we are by your presence. Introduction for the Day: The archangel Michael is pictured as a prince and a general of the heavenly army, defeating the dragon [the ancient serpent, the devil, Satan]. It is important, though, to see in Revelation 12:11 that God’s victory ultimately comes by Jesus’ death and the testimony of his followers. The power of God’s truth gives us confidence in the face of evil on earth, even in the face of our own death. Communion: All baptized Christians who celebrate the real presence of Christ in the bread and wine are invited to the Lord’s Table at the 7:30 service. Gluten- free wafers are available if you ask your communion server. Those who desire juice instead of regular wine, please tell this to the communion assistant. Due to the weight of the communion trays, you may be asked to take your glass of wine from the tray as it is presented to you. Cross Lunch thanks: Thanks to everyone who donated food for this week’s Cross Lutheran Church lunch, as well as those who went along to serve at the meal. Over 230 people were served, and the salads, jellos and desserts were greatly enjoyed. Youth Drama Group Meets Today: If you’re interested in being part of St. Matthew’s Youth Drama Group, come to the youth room today at 12:15. We’ll have lunch, do some acting, and plan for skits in worship. The group is open to 6th – 12th graders who like to act. Questions? Talk to Gretchen. Did you know? We are offering printed directories for those who would like them. While our online directory is used frequently by our members, some members are not online, or may prefer a printed copy. These are available in the church office.

Ministry Scheduler Pro Weekly TipSunday morning volunteers are now scheduled utilizing Ministry Scheduler Pro, (MSP), an on-line automatic scheduling program. If you have not logged on yet please check your e-mail or contact [email protected] to have the link sent to you. Everyone is doing a fantastic job with this new system and all of the questions have been excellent! We are learning together. Thanks for your patience.Tip for the Week: “Why am I not scheduled?” “Why am I scheduled so frequently?”Please update your preferences in the My Profile tab. There is a section for notes/comments where you can ask to be scheduled less often or more often and can specify the area of service as well. Remember MSP is sensitive to the entire volunteer group of 500 people! So, if it seems like you are not being scheduled for something it is possible that the schedule program is giving others an opportunity to serve. Please just send me an e-mail with your concern. I will always respond to e-mail and will make sure you are scheduled in a way that meets your needs.

September 29Children’s Organ Transplant AssociationJoin us to learn more about the importance of organ donation and how a organization called Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) works to ensure that children whose families cannot afford the costs of an organ transplant will not be left off the waiting list for organs. The issue is very important for Ruth and Steve Mielke of our congregation who have a 18 year nephew on the heart transplant list. Please come and learn more about COTA and the importance of organ donation (www.cota.org and www.unos.org). Facilitated by Steve and Ruth Mielke

October 6The Life of St. Francis of AssisiSt. Francis of Assisi, a 13th century monk and Christian mystic, is well known in the Catholic church as the patron saint of animals, but his ministry and devotion to Christ went far beyond this. He only lived to be 44 years old but his life is the subject of many books and several movies. What do we really know about this man who took the gospel literally, following all that Jesus said and did? Are his teachings relevant to us today? Led by Conor Williams

The Dust Is Settling - And now it’s dusty... The dust is beginning to settle around our construction projects. Join us Sunday, Oct 13, at 12:15 for a chili lunch and time for dusting. Dusting materials will be supplied.

Share the fruits of your labor - Sometimes too many zucchini, sometimes too many tomatoes. Next Sunday, October 6, we invite all of our gardeners to share from the blessings of their gardens. Members are invited to bring what they can and take what they would like. Any extra produce will be donated to the Meal Outreach Ministry.

October 13 and October 20: Membership Drive for Friends of Luther Manor raises funds for the Luther Manor community: Friends of Luther Manor (formerly the Luther Manor Auxiliary) runs an annual membership drive to provide funds for extra items for residents. We ask people to join the Friends of Luther Manor for this coming year. The cost is only $5.00. We hope we can count on your support of this longstanding partnership with one of the nation’s premiere older adult communities. Your donation will help the work of Luther Manor in providing programs and services for the residents there. Membership does not mean you need to be an active member in the Friends group. Your donation is used to purchase extras for the common areas at Luther Manor. Thanks to Bill Schier and Mary Ann Abrahamson of our congregation who serve as the Friends of Luther Manor congregational liaisons for St. Matthew’s.

Thank you Sunday School parents! You did a great job of parking your cars and coming in to get your kids from Sunday School at pick up time last Sunday! Please continue to follow the ÒK eep it Moving - Keep it SafeÓ procedure. Here it is again: To ensure the safety of our children and to promote safe access to worship we are asking parents who are picking up children from Sunday School to “Keep it Moving...Keep it Safe!” This is similar to what many schools do. Here’s how it works:

• Please try to park your vehicle in a parking spot and enter the building to wait for your child to be released from Sunday School.

• If your child has not been released yet, please continue to drive forward, circle left onto Milwaukee Avenue and re-enter the parking lot.

• A Welcome volunteer will be directing cars to “Keep Moving” if the child is not available for pick up.

• If you want a better chance of securing a parking spot when picking up your kids from Sunday School try arriving at 10:50. Many spots open up around this time.

Sunday School Offering Supports the Work of the churchEnvelopes Available at Welcome Center or from Your Child’s Teacher Do you need offering envelopes for your Sunday School-aged child? Three-year-olds received new boxes in Sunday School last week. New students as well as returning students who have run out of last year’s envelopes can get a box of envelopes from their Sunday School teacher or from the Welcome center in the Commons. We encourage you to help your child remember to bring a regular offering to Sunday School. Offerings collected provide for the whole ministry of St. Matthew’s, from maintaining our building to supporting our partners in Tanzania, El Salvador, and the central city of Milwaukee. Often we hear that children are the future of the church. But the truth is that children are the church – just as all of us are. And all of us are called to support the church – the body of Christ – through prayer, service, learning, connecting, and giving. Bringing an offering is one way to help children understand that they are part of that body, and they are never too young to build it up!

For those with interest in an Adult Mission Trip to help our Oklahoma neighbors In Luke’s gospel a lawyer asks Jesus, “Who is my neighbor?” Jesus responds by telling the story of the Good Samaritan, a story that calls us to move beyond our comfort zone to reach out and help others. We have that opportunity in Moore, Oklahoma where on May 20, a level 5 tornado touched down killing 23 people, injuring about 400, and destroying over 1,100 homes. Based on a mission trip currently being run by St. Luke’s in Waukesha, plans are taking shape for St. Matthew’s to do a similar trip some time this spring. There will be a meeting on September 24 to share information on a St. Matthew’s trip.

Your Help is Needed to Ship Food to El Salvador! Can You Help Us Raise $20,000? The Salvadoran Lutheran Church needs your help in the fight against hunger. Each year, the church depends on food shipments sent by St. Matthew’s to meet emergency food needs of struggling families and senior citizens. The shipments, which contain packets of nutritionally fortified rice, cost approximately $10,000 to ship (for over $50,000 worth of food). We hope to ship two containers of food in the next 6 months, with the next shipment occurring later this fall. If you can help us reach our goal of $20,000, please make a check to St. Matthew’s, and designate it for “El Salvador Food Shipment.”

Cross Lutheran Church Tutoring Needed - An Opportunity for You?If you enjoy helping a kid to “learn the basics” there may be an opportunity for you. Our partner church Cross Lutheran, in collaboration with Fox Point Lutheran, is expanding this fall in their second full year of a youth tutoring program. If St. Matthew’s can create a pool of volunteers, we could help Cross expand their program into the 4th to 6th grade years. The program runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. including a shared meal we would collaborate on bringing to the tutored kids. As part of a team your skills and availability could be shared to fill the needs of the program. Could tutor one night a week or both. Learning materials and guidance are included. They would like to begin the program expansion later this fall. We look forward to hearing from you. Please find out more by contacting: Dave Weinberg-Kinsey (414-202-9525) or Pr Margaret.

A note about your valuable items: A reminder to our members and guests that each week as you come to church, any valuable items should be kept with you and not left in coat pockets or in an unlocked space.

Middle School youth invited to Corn MazeOctober 13, 12:15 – 3:00What could be more fun on a brisk autumn day than to get lost in a corn maze – and hopefully find your way out of it? All middle school youth and friends are invited to take that challenge on Sunday, October 13 as we head to Basse’s Corn Maze. (This year’s maze design is Scooby Doo! Where Are You?) We’ll meet in the youth room for lunch and leave from there for the corn maze. Cost is $10 for lunch and corn maze (plus spending money for snacks at the market). Several parents will be needed to drive/chaperone. If you can help, please talk to Gretchen Haugse.

Reformation Store Needs Your Help at the storeThe store is in great need of people to sort and stock. If you have a few hours to spare, please call Diane Roznowski, Store Volunteer Director at 414/807-7451 to say “Yes! I’ll be a part of this wonderful ministry!” for a morning or afternoon.
