LOCATIONS

MILWAUKEE YOUTH ARTS CENTER (MYAC) The Milwaukee Youth Arts center is a state of the art educational facility, located at 325 W Walnut Street, Milwaukee, WI 53212 in historic Schlitz Park.

OCONOMOWOC ARTS CENTER (OAC)Join us in the western suburbs. We are in residence at the Oconomowoc Arts Center running our full Academy program. The Arts Center is a state of the art building attached to Oconomowoc High School at 641 E Forest Street, Oconomowoc, WI 53066.

SHARON LYNNE WILSON CENTER FOR THE ARTS (SLW)Summer classes are held at the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts in Brookfield. This beautiful arts and education facility is nestled just 20 minutes west of downtown Milwaukee in Mitchell Park at 19805 W Capitol Drive, Brookfield, WI 53045.

Dear Parents, Welcome to First Stage Theater Academy!

Here at First Stage we believe passionately in theater’s power to transform the lives of young people. Our Summer Theater Academy is an experience like no other with students of all ages coming every day to make new friends, practice new skills, and let their individuality shine!

Our students are the reason we’re here and encouraging them to grow as confident, intelligent, creative, and empathetic art-ists and people is our mission. At First Stage our dedicated and professional faculty and staff work together to create a positive learning environment and strive to meet the unique needs of each student. Our goal is to impart life skills through stage skills, instill a love of learning and creating, and to build a stronger community through engagement in the arts.

Our door is always open and we invite you to drop by often, as we are always happy to meet new families and strengthen our bonds with those we already have the pleasure to know.

PRESENTATIONSEvery Summer Academy session will culminate in a lively presentation of class work for family and friends. One, two, and three week classes will hold presentations on the final class day. Four week class presentations will be held on the final Thursday. Details will be noted in the welcome letter you will receive following registration.

EXTENDED CAREExtended Care is designed to help busy working parents. This program offers students an opportunity to participate in games, memorize lines, practice scene work, meet new friends, or just hang out.

Extended Care will be available Monday through Friday at the Milwaukee Youth Arts Center location only.

Morning K-4: 8:00 – 9:00 am at $50 per weekMorning 5 – 12: 8:00 – 8:30 am at $25 per week

Afternoon K-12: Class end time to 5:30 pm at $50 per week

If you would like to enroll your student in Extended Care please select the option on the registration form. If your student registers for both morning and afternoon care, the cost is $90 per week.

GRADES 5–12 CURRICULUM

BEGINNING OF DAY: Each Academy day begins with a gathering to prepare, share goals, and encourage each other to do our best.

ACTING THEORY: Explore character, relationships, action and text while developing overall acting skills and confidence.

TWO-WEEK SESSIONS: Students will rotate through a core curriculum that explores the fundamental elements of actor training: Acting Theory, Improvisation, Musical Theater, and Shakespeare.

THREE-WEEK SESSIONS: Students will spend two weeks rotating through the core curriculum developing the tools essential to the craft of acting.

Additionally, in the third week, these young actors will also explore other exciting theater areas such as tech and design, playwriting, and in-depth scene study.

FOUR-WEEK SESSIONS: Students will continue their theater training through immersion in the core curriculum of Acting Theory, Improvisation, Musical Theater, and Shakespeare.

MAJORS: Four week students will spend time focusing on their favorite area of study. In these sessions students will form 6-12 grade ensembles devoted to delving deeper into all aspects of their major. Imagine that, more time devoted to your favorite class! Young actors will refine and develop skills specific to their areas of interest, while maintaining their fundamental acting skills. Major areas are:

• Improvisation• Musical Theater• Shakespeare

Presentations for four week groups will happen on the final Thursday. Friday classes will consist of guest artists, final reflec-tions, and goal setting for the future.

Students should indicate their order of preference for majors on the registration form. Upon registration, if the student's first choice is not available they will be placed in their second, and then on to the third if necessary. Please check your invoice for confirmation of your major.

INTERNSHIPS

Do you see yourself as a mentor? Do you want to put your office skills to the test? If you answered yes to either of these questions, the First Stage Theater Academy Internship Program is for you!

CLASSROOM INTERNS: Interns serve as a role model, guide, mentor, and teacher’s assistant. Once classes begin, teachers and students count on our interns and look forward to working with them each day.

OFFICE INTERNS: An intern may serve as an assistant in the Academy Office, answering the telephone, taking attendance, light customer service, filing paperwork, making copies, compiling data, delivering messages, etc.

SCHOOL YEAR INTENSIVE AUDITIONSAudition for one of our School Year Intensive programs while you are taking class this summer! Extended contact hours and progressive curriculum in these multi-session classes empower each student to maximize his or her artistic skills as well as emphasize commitment, responsibility, critical thinking, and personal expression. Auditions will be held during lunches and details and permission forms will be available on the first day of class. School Year Intensives which run September-May include:

• Advanced Musical Theater Grades 7–12• Organized Chaos Grades 7–12• Touring Company Grades 5–12• Word Play Ensemble Grades 5–12• Young Company Grades 9–12

Milwaukee Youth Arts Center Company Class Four Week Sessions – Times: 8:45 am–4:15 pm Serving returning students entering grades 10–12 in fall of 2015 Company classes will work with a professional director for four weeks to broaden performance skills, deepen knowledge of theater, and produce a show.

As a member of Company class you will be expected to:• Serve as a role model of teamwork and positive energy for all other students.• Support and encourage each other to do your best.• Take on the additional challenge of both class work and rehearsal.• Carry the Company Class legacy of leadership, energy, discipline, focus, and joy.

SIGN UP FOR AN AUDITION• Online registration for Company class is not available. Please mail or fax your registration form to receive an audi-

tion time.• Auditions will be held February 18, 20 and March 4, 6. Exact times will be given upon registration.• If you would like us to hold a spot in a different class should you not be accepted, please note on form.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS 1. A memorized monologue of 1-2 minutes in length, classical or contemporary, based on which class is your first choice.2. If you want to be considered for a musical, you will also need to prepare 32 bars of a musical theater song, which you

will sing acapella.

Next Steps Program Next Steps classes are designed to help students with autism take their next steps as an artist and a person. First Stage creates a safe space for all students to be creative and be themselves without judgment or fear of failure. Guided by our phi-losophy of teaching life skills through stage skills, students will experience the joy of acting and musical theater each day with a team of teaching artists and special education professionals.

HOW DO I REGISTER FOR FIRST STAGE THEATER ACADEMY?All registrations are processed on a first-come, first-served basis, accepted by mail or fax using the form included in this brochure, or online at www.FirstStage.org. Please register as early as possible, as space fills quickly. Please complete all information on your registration form to ensure your registration is processed as soon as possible.

WILL I RECEIVE A CONFIRMATION OF MY REGISTRATION?Confirmations are sent for the class(es) for which you have registered. Please read your confirmation thoroughly when you receive it. This confirmation will also list any remaining balance, which is due by Friday, May 29.

IS THERE A WAIT LIST FOR CLASSES THAT ARE FULL?Wait lists are established for classes that have reached the enrollment limit. Students on wait lists may be called for enrollment should a cancellation occur. While we cannot predict when or if a cancellation would occur, we encourage you to be added to our wait lists, which are created on a first-come, first-served basis. Any money received will be applied to registered classes only. Any money received for waitlisted classes will be returned.

WHAT DOES MY TUITION INCLUDE, AND WHEN IS MY TUITION DUE?Tuition includes all materials and one Academy t-shirt per student.

A $75 minimum deposit for Summer Academy is required with your registration. If signing up for the automatic payment method, the remaining balance will be deducted automatically on Friday, May 29. You may change the credit card payment method or submit full payment via cash or check at any time.

Balances must be paid in full by Friday, May 29. If the balance is not received, we will not be able to hold your placement in the class.

DO YOU OFFER REFUNDS?There is a $25 administrative fee for all refunds. Full refunds (minus the fee) are available until Friday, May 29. Students withdrawing after that date will receive a gift certificate good for

one year towards future classes or tickets to our productions. No refunds or tuition credits are given after the first day of class. The deposit and any tuition paid will be forfeited if a student cancels after the session has begun.

ARE CLASSES EVER CANCELLED?If First Stage Theater Academy needs to cancel one or more days of class due to circumstances beyond the Academy’s control (e.g., severe weather, power outage, etc.), there will be no refunds or make up classes.

First Stage Theater Academy reserves the right to cancel any course if enrollment is insufficient. Any tuition paid will be refunded in full.

CAN MY CHILD SWITCH A CLASS?If families find that they have a scheduling conflict or other emergency circumstance and need to switch their course selection, please contact the Academy office to request a change.

Students will not be moved from their assigned group after the first day of class.

Please be aware that switching class is contingent upon space availability in the desired class.

WHAT IF MY CHILD NEEDS TO MISS A CLASS?Due to the nature of the program, we are unable to offer make up classes.

Please use good judgment about bringing your student to First Stage Theater Academy. If your student is sick or contagious, please keep them home. Parents of students who become ill during the day will be promptly notified and are expected to arrange to pick up their student immediately.

Please contact the Academy office if you know in advance that your student will be absent.

First Stage Theater Academy also reserves the right to send children home due to inappropriate or disrespectful behavior.

Opportunities FIRST STAGE YOUNG PERFORMER AUDITIONS COMING SOON!With summer comes the opportunity for young people age 8 through grade 12 to audition for First Stage’s 2015–2016 season.

Auditions will be held throughout July and August, with registration opening in June.

Starting in early June, you can go to www.FirstStage.org/auditions to register for an audition. You may also register by calling the Young Performer Audition hotline at (414) 267-2963. Booking an audition slot in the early part of summer is strongly advised.

CONTINUE YOUR ACADEMY EXPERIENCE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR School Year Academy class registration will open mid-summer. Extend your summer experience throughout the year in one of our Academy classes or School Year Intensives!
