While most of the focus is on assuring proficiency in basic algebraic skills and processes, considerable time will be devoted to solving real-world applications. Topics include solving equations, inequalities and systems, factoring, polynomials, rational expressions, irrational numbers, radicals and quadratic equations. This course is designed for acceleration and not remediation. For GFA students, Division Head permission is required for this course. Cost: $1,950Students will need to purchase a textbook prior to enrollment: Algebra 1 (2007) McDougal Littell Publishers, ISBN 0-618-59402-7. This six-week course is a study of functions – linear, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, rational and polynomial – and an introduction to matrices, sequences and series and basic probability concepts, among others. These topics are studied algebraically, graphically and numerically, and through this triplex approach, students will continue to acquire an understanding of algebraic structure and how algebra can be used to model various situations. A graphing calculator is required and will be used extensively. This course is designed for acceleration and not remediation. For GFA students, Division Head permission is required for this course.

Cost: $1,950 Students will need to purchase a textbook prior to enrollment: Algebra 2 (2007) McDougal Littell Publishers, ISBN 0-618-59541-4. A graphing calculator (TI-83, 83+, 84 or 84+) is also required. Instructor: Sarah Ostermueller ([email protected])

HISTORY

International Relations in the 21st Century

July 2 – July 20 for students traveling on a GFA World Perspectives TripJuly 2 – July 27 for all other students8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

This class will meet Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Online course work will be required on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

For all students, the final paper is due Monday, July 30.

This course aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to understand international affairs. Why do nations go to war? What is the basis for peace among them? Is violence part of human nature or is it a social construct? Students answer these questions by examining multiple perspectives on international relations such as Realism, Liberalism, Marxism and Feminism. Then they apply theory to the study of the most pressing global issues of our time. Topics include the causes of major wars and ethnic conflicts, nuclear proliferation, humanitarian intervention, international terrorism and global economic and environmental challenges. Assessments include position papers, tests, class discussion and a final project. GFA students participating in one of GFA’s World Perspectives Trips can write their final project on a topic relevant to their trip experience.

Cost: $ 1,300Students will need to purchase two textbooks prior to enrollment: International Relations: Perspectives and Controversies (3rd Edition) by Keith Shimko, ISBN 0-495-79796-0 and The Post-American World: Release 2.0 (Hardcover) by Fareed Zakaria, ISBN 0-393-08180-X.
