PURPOSE OF THE CPSM PROGRAM

• The Certified Professional Services Marketer (CPSM) is recognized as an individual who has met a rigorous standard of experience and expertise in marketing professional services and who agrees to adhere to the ethics and responsibilities of the profession as outlined in the CPSM Code of Ethics.

• Candidates who apply for the CPSM designation are taking their first step toward joining a distinguished group of professionals who have made a commitment to excellence in career advancement and to an ongoing pursuit of knowledge.

• The CPSM examination is intended to test the knowledge of those individuals involved in marketing or business development for firms providing professional services.

DOMAINS OF PRACTICE

Candidates will be tested on their skills and knowledge of the six domains of practice:

1. Marketing Research

2. Marketing Planning

3. Client and Business Development

4. Proposals

5. Promotional Activity

6. Management

In 1997 and again in 2013, working with the Professional Testing Corporation, SMPS analyzed the practice of professional services marketing to articulate and confirm the body of knowledge and skills most critical to competency. The resulting knowledge areas and skill sets are classified under the six Domains of Practice for Professional Services Marketing

ELIGIBILITY

To earn the CPSM designation, candidates must be proficient in the knowledge and skills identified in SMPS’s Domains of Practice for Professional Services Marketers. Each candidate must meet the following requirements:

• Possess a bachelor’s degree or an advanced degree plus four years of experience in marketing or business development for firms providing professional services, or

• Possess an associate’s degree plus six years work experience in marketing or business development for firms providing professional services, or

• Without a degree, have eight years of experience in marketing or business development for firms providing professional services,

• Pledge to abide by the CPSM Code of Ethics

THE ROAD TO CPSM

• Purchase study materials. (Handbook and Study Guide Required)

• Join the Fort Worth CPSM Study Group.

• Study Hard!

• Submit an application form with fee to SMPS National.

• Sit for the CPSM Exam.

• Celebrate your success!

• Get your CEU’s through SMPS Fort Worth, Conferences or other technical training opportunities.

• Renew Certification.

• Recertification fee required once every three years: $225 for members and $375 for nonmembers.

CPSM APPLICATION PROCESS

Step 1: Prepare and study for the CPSM test.

Step 2: Complete the CPSM Application Form and submit application fee online. ($245 Member, $350 Nonmember)

Step 3: Send a copy of your college transcript, or a notarized photocopy of your degree (when applicable), to the SMPS National Certification Department.

Step 4: Await acceptance of your application. You will receive written confirmation of your acceptance to the program.

Step 5: Sit for the test at PSI testing center within 1 year of your initial application.

(Please allow up to four weeks for the Certification Department to process your application and verify eligibility.)

CPSM STUDY GROUP GROUND RULES

• CPSM Study Group 1st and 3rd Monday Night Regular Sessions (16)• Attendance will be taken at the Monday Night Regular Sessions. MISSING MORE

THAN THREE (3) WILL MEAN FORFEITURE OF YOUR $100 STUDY GROUP FEE.• Location is Gorrondona & Associates Inc., tentative time is 5:45 – 7:45 PM. If this time

is not conducive to your schedule, please email Krystal as soon as possible.

• Study Group Fee/Refund• In order to receive your CPSM Study Group exam refund, you must sit for the CPSM

exam. You do not have to pass to get the refund. Exam must be taken within 1 year of your initial application, and by October 29, 2016 to receive your refund.

• If you are currently not eligible to apply for the CPSM exam due to the requirement of four years of marketing professional services experience, you must take the practice exam. The practice exam must be taken as a group and turned into Krystal Bybee to recieve your refund.

THE CPSM CERTIFICATION EXAM

• Costs to sit for the CPSM Exam:• Members: $275• Non-members: $415

• The CPSM exam consists of 150 multiple-choice questions.

• The total testing time is three hours.

• The exam can be taken anytime within a year of your initial application at a PSI testing center.

• Candidates must answer 113 of the 150 questions correctly to receive a passing score of 75%.

• Members of the CPSM Study Group must test by October 29, 2016 to receive their study group refund.

CPSM RECERTIFICATION

• CPSM certifications are valid for a period of three years.

• CPSMs are required to earn 50 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) over the three year period to maintain their certification.

• CEUs may be earned through SMPS or other organizations that offer programs encompassing the SMPS Domains of Practice. Methods to earn CEUs towards recertification:• Attend SMPS chapter/regional/national education events, conferences and programs.

• In-house technical training.

• Attend other association’s programs such as the AIA, AGC, TEXO, etc.

• Archived webinars on the SMPS website.

• Certification Advancement Assistance Program Available to SMPS Members• SMPS will give five CAA scholarships each year starting in January of 2016.

• Assistance includes exam preparation tools such as the A/E/C Marketing fundamentals book, the CPSM Study Guide and the Marketing Handbook for the Design & Construction Professional.

• The CAA Scholarship also offers a reimbursement of your examination fee ($275)

• Anyone who has been a member of SMPS for at least one full continuous year as of August 2015 is eligible to apply.

• Applications are due by December 1, 2015.

• Exam must be taken by August 31, 2016 to qualify for the program.
