Principal’s Message Welcome back to our new term. It’s been lovely seeing so many smiling faces greeting us each morning as the children enter the school grounds. We look forward to another wonderful term of learning at Copacabana PS. We would like to extend a warm welcome to our new families and students who have joined Copacabana this term. We know you are settling in well. I hope all families had a safe and enjoyable holiday. Copacabana PS will continue to follow the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC), Department of Education and NSW Health guidelines. Students will need to bring their own drink bottle as the bubblers still remain closed. Best hygiene practices (regular handwashing) continue and the enhanced cleaning service will remain throughout the term. We are still advising parents to keep their children at home if unwell and a doctor’s certificate is required if the absence is longer than three days. For anyone who has travelled to Victoria recently, you are required to self-isolate for 14 days and seek testing if you develop flu-like symptoms. There are several activities that schools are permitted to recommence this term:

Special Religious Education (SRE) and Special Education in Ethics (SEE) (returns week3)

School Photos (week 4 – Thursday 13th August)

School banking

Locally organised knockouts, round robins, gala days

School Carnivals – Athletics (week 4 – Tuesday 11th August – Yrs 2-6)

All contact sports, semi-contact and non-contact sports

Inter-school sports competitions

Excursions that are outdoors (day only – no overnight)

Canteen and uniform shops

However, several school activities and practices remain on hold and will be reconsidered as the term progresses. These include:

Parent attendance at school events, functions, activities and assemblies remain on hold.

No non-essential visitors on site.

School-based activities that involve a large gathering of adults are on hold. These include parent/community

gatherings such as parent functions, working bees, school BBQs, large parent information evenings and large on-

site cultural events.

We thank all parents and carers for their ongoing support with the current protocols, processes and practices in place to ensure the safety for all. I will endeavour to keep you informed of any further updates. I would also like to thank our casual staff – Mrs Ryan, Mr Peters and Mr Rippon who supported CPS throughout the COVID-19 remote leaning period in Term 2. Pursuit of Excellence – Staff Development Day Our staff joined together to listen to a livestream from Sarah Mitchell (Minister of Education), Mark Scott (Secretary), Murat Dizdar and Cathy Brennan (Deputy Secretaries) to learn about the changes to the School Excellence cycle this will better support schools as they progress on their improvement journey. We will be developing a new 4-year Strategic Improvement Plan to be implemented from 2021. Staff also participated in professional learning activities focused on teacher accreditation, data analysis and the new PDHPE syllabus. It was a very productive and wonderful way to start the term.

TERM 3 / WEEK 2

Welcome to our school We would like to welcome the following pre-service teachers who will be with us this term: Miss Peers (3/4R), Mr Wade (1/2C) and Misss Thomas (KW). We wish all our pre-service teachers the very best during their internships at Copacabana Public School. Education Week This year Education Week in NSW Public Schools will be celebrated during the week commencing Monday the 3rd of August. The wonderful work of teachers, the supportive community and the achievement of students will be acknowledged and the outcomes we deliver in public schools is something we should feel proud of. The theme for Education Week 2020 is ‘Learning Together’. It’s a theme that reflects an incredible year for NSW public school students, staff and parents and the partnerships that have been strengthened in response. Traditionally this is a week for schools to showcase the wonderful opportunities we offer for our students and usually involves being invited to assemblies, classroom visits and other special events. Unfortunately, this year due to COVID restrictions we had to make some changes. This year we will celebrate “Learning Together” and Education week by hosting our book character parade which is a lot of fun for both the children and staff. This will be a student only event keeping in line with the COVID safe practices. Be sure to keep an eye on our Facebook page and social media platforms for photos. Our book character parade will be held on Tuesday the 4th of August. Student Leaders Projects Congratulations to our wonderful student leaders for organising the Aussie Bush theme day on the last day of term 2. As a school we raised $420.50 for Stewart House. Congratulations, to all students for participating in our first Trash-free Tuesday initiative which will be held each successive Tuesday this term. Semester 1 Reports As previously advised, Copacabana Public School is providing all parents/carers with a modified written report to their child/ren. This will be sent home this Friday the 31st of July. It has been a delight to read each student’s report and what they have achieved under very challenging circumstances. These reports provide a summative account of student progress and achievement on learning covered during Semester 1. Curriculum Review As you may or may not be aware the NSW school curriculum has been reviewed to improve standards. The changes will begin in 2021with stages implementing new curriculum by 2024. Unnecessary content will be removed, there will be a greater focus on literacy and numeracy, and TAFE and vocational training pathways will be modernised. A curriculum review undertaken by Professor Geoff Masters supports this innovative process. The Government’s response to the review is based on: decluttering the curriculum by reducing unnecessary subjects. A ‘back to basics’ approach will see a renewed focus on the core subjects of English, Maths and Science. Kindergarten 2021 We are now taking enrolments for all students who are eligible to start school in 2021. Please contact the school for further information or enrol online. Wishing all our Copa families a wonderful week. Yours in Education, Mary Hunt

TERM 3 / WEEK 2

Book Week Celebrations

This year our annual Book Week celebration will be held in Week 3 as part of Education Week, when our annual book character parade will take place on

Tuesday 4th August. Though the celebrations will be slightly different to previous years, we still want to celebrate by holding the Book Parade for the children. We

wish to promote reading, a love of books and creativity.

The children can come to school dressed as their favourite book character or they can dress in line with the theme and come as a “Curious Creature”. Let your minds

run wild!

Every year this event is wonderfully supported by our school community. However, due to COVID-19 restrictions parents will be unable to attend the actual parade. The teachers will be taking many photos of our very creative costumes, so that we can

share this event with parents on our social media platforms, due to the current restrictions in place.

We look forward to an exciting day as we celebrate the love of reading, as well as

celebrating the Children’s Book Council of Australia Awards.

School Banking is back. School Banking is back. School Banking Day will be Thursdays, commencing on 30/07/2020 School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way to help young Australians learn about money and practice good savings habits. For each weekly deposit made at school, students will receive a Dollarmites token. Once they collect 10 tokens, they can redeem them for a School Banking reward. If your child has previously participated in School Banking, or has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account, they can start banking straight away by bringing their Dollarmites deposit wallet to school on School Banking day. If your child has lost their deposit wallet, please contact your School Banking Co-ordinator or visit any Commonwealth Bank branch for a replacement. Our School Banking program is made possible because of volunteers. Thank you to those volunteers for donating their time to run School Banking for our students.

TERM 3 / WEEK 2

Safe, responsible and respectful use of digital technology. Our children and young people have grown up with digital technology and it is woven into their lives. During COVID -19 many young people are using digital technology more often to learn and to socialise. Supporting children and young people to use technology in a safe, respectful and responsible manner allows for more active online learning that can increase student engagement and participation. It also supports access to a broader range of content and learning resources that can supplement students’ learning experiences. Being safe online is a shared responsibility for students, teachers, parents, carers and the broader community. It is important that families can communicate with their children about the how to use digital technology in safe, responsible and respectful ways. Here are some key reminders for children and young people of how to stay safe online:

Protect personal information, including name, address, school, email address, telephone number,

pictures and other personal details.

Never share user names or passwords and only use your own

Ask a teacher or other responsible adult for help if anyone online asks for personal information, wants

to meet or offers money or gifts.

Let a teacher or other responsible adult know immediately if anything online that is suspicious, harmful

or inappropriate.

Never hack, disable or bypass any hardware or software security, including any virus protection, spam

and filter

TERM 3 / WEEK 2

After School Care News

We would like to welcome back all the children to term 3 .We hope you all feel well rested and ready for the third term. For the children that attended the vacation care program it was well received and the children all appeared to enjoy their days at the centre. Only one day was changed due to poor weather. The children did not let this phase them, we ensured the children were kept busy and had fun. The children planted Bulbs in the holidays and we are excited for the flowers to appear when spring arrives. Our cooking day with the International cooking incursion was the best and the children really enjoyed making and eating pork dumplings. Lego master was another great day the children enjoyed. We also had a Mchappy day (a first for the service in 15 years). A Dollar for each child that attended went to Ronald McDonald house to support sick children and families. Thank you all the families that book in as we really enjoy the time we spend with your children. If you have any ideas for the next vacation care. Please touch base as doing fun things in the holidays makes for happy children. As we are all aware COVID is still the forefront of our lives and we all need to be accountable for ourselves and the wellbeing of others. The service has in place hygiene practices to ensure we all stay healthy and safe. We employer hand washing, have thorough cleaning service at the end of each shift, and continually speak to the children. The educators and myself practice social distancing and limit the events we go to keep us all safe. Limiting the amount of people entering the service to a minimum is paramount. All people entering the service will need to sign in and out to ensure we have a record in case of any outbreaks. We also have Non-Contact infrared Thermometers to protect everyone. Children feeling unwell are kept safe away from the other children and parents are called to collect them as soon as possible. I am pleased to say up utill now we have had no children attend the service that are unwell. All educators have the covid app which will help detect any outbreaks.

Regards,

Julee Dean
