The safety and well-being of all our pupils at Rossall School is our highest priority. Our business is to know everyone as an individual and to provide a secure and caring environment, so that every pupil can learn in safety. We expect respect, good manners and fair play to be shown by everyone so that every pupil can develop his/her full potential and feel positive about him/herself as an individual. All pupils should care for and support each other.

Rossall prides itself on its culture of open and effective communication between staff and pupils.

Our aims are to:a) create an environment in our School which is safe and secure for all pupilsb) encourage our pupils to establish satisfying relationships with their families, with peers and with other adultsc) encourage children to develop a sense of autonomy and independenced) work with parents to build their understanding of and commitment to the welfare of all pupils.

Who to turn to:All pupils know that there are adults to whom they can turn to if they are worried, including Houseparents, the Designated Senior Lead (Mr Pryor and Mrs Lee), the Head, Deputy Head, Senior Teachers, Chaplain and the Medical Staff.

All pupils have access to a telephone helpline, enabling them to call for support in private.

Every child is given a care card which contains guidance on where to turn for advice, including confidential help lines and web addresses for external specialists.

Our notice boards around school, the Medical Centre and all Houses display advice on where pupils can seek help, e.g. Child Line and External Listener.

Forms of Child Abuse:Child abuse can be of a sexual, emotional or physical nature, it can also be the result of neglect.

Concerns or suspicions may arise through either direct allegation, direct observation or by changes in attitude or behaviour. All members of the teaching and support staff receive Safeguarding training on an annual basis.

SAFEGUARDING AT ROSSALL

LAST WORD

10 YEARS ON!

On Saturday 17th March 2007 during a meeting of the Rossall School Council, it was agreed that from September the Junior School would adopt and start teaching the Primary Years Programme accredited by the International Baccalaureate Organisation. The long road to authorisation began under the watchful eye of the then Head, Mr Tim Wilbur and a newly appointed PYP Co-ordinator Mrs Sue Riley. In July 2009, the IBO congratulated the school on accomplishing this status and welcomed Rossall to the growing IB community.

Since the very early days, the program has evolved, developed and grown, the curriculum and the administrative requirements have changed together with the appointment of new co-ordinators. In 2012, Mrs Sue Tyldesley guided the staff through the first and very successful evaluation since authorisation. As a result of their findings and recommendations, a change from teaching French, Spanish and German was made to teach Mandarin as the continuous Modern Foreign Language from Infants through to Juniors. This was a very innovative and forward thinking decision suggested by the Head, Ms Elaine Purves.

In April 2017, Miss Julia Clapp (Junior School) and Mrs Tracy Green (Infant School) shared the role of co-ordinator to prepare for the next evaluation in October. The team of IB inspectors spent two very intense days with children, parents and staff to scrutinise the program. They were highly impressed by the way in which the program is being delivered and singled out four commendations in the following areas:-

• Promoting understanding, open-mindedness and respect throughout the community• Embracing and promoting the attributes of the PYP learner profile.• Supporting the community in actions• Quality of recording and tracking progress

They described Rossall as a ‘golden nugget’ of PYP in the UK.
