……………………………………………………Freshers’ Week 10-14 September
Freshers’ week 2018 went off with a bang as we welcomed a wide range of organisations to
provide students with guidance and advice in everything from volunteering, fitness and
personal finance. There was lots of activity in the main atrium during the 5 day event with
plenty of freebies up for grabs. Clyde 1 kept us tuned in with music and laughter throughout.
A huge thank you to all the organisations involved for helping make Freshers’ week successful.
We would also like to congratulate our Freshers’ Prize Draw Winners: James Taggart, Lauren
Smith, Kayleigh Gaffney, Caitlin Mushet, Jessica McCulloch, Talitha Bramwell and Megan
Chawner.
Events
Glasgow Pride 2018 College students and staff took part in the Glasgow Pride Parade on the
14 July. The parade started in the city centre and finished in Kelvingrove Park,
where the Pride Expo was held. Everyone involved had a great day engaging with
the LGBTI community, as well as meeting lots of other organisations.
Our stall offered a variety of fun merchandise including SLC sunglasses, flags and
rainbow badges. It was fantastic to be part of another successful year at
Glasgow Pride and we look forward to being involved again next year.
World Mental Health Day 10 October We were delighted to be part of the College event to support World Mental Health Day.
Mental Health problems can affect anyone at any time so this was a great day to take time to consider on own Mental Health & Wellbeing.
This year's theme was 'YOUNG PEOPLE AND MENTAL HEALTH IN A CHANGING WORLD' and there was a range of activities available on how students could get involved.

Campaigns ……………………………………………..……. Healthy Body Healthy Minds Awards Vice President, Liz Newlands attended the “Think Positive” Healthy Body Healthy Mind event in Edin-
burgh. Liz was given lots of helpful tips and advice on gaining re-accreditation for the Healthy Body
Healthy Mind Award. This award centres around physical activity, Smoke Free Generation and Student
Mental Health. The Students’ Association will be working closely with the College, the Sport and Fitness
department, various College committees, NUS and Scottish Student Sport to achieve reaccreditation.
Over the coming months we are looking forward to working on activities for World Mental Health day,
Stoptober, cycling activities and Smile Mile walks. Scottish Student Sport will help us think of ways to
include more physical activities such as netball and football tournaments to the college. We want to
hear from students who are keen to get involved with any of these activities as they can’t run without
your participation.
Cycling Scotland
South Lanarkshire College is aiming to become a Cycle Friendly Campus and
we need you to help us by getting on your bike! We are working with Cycling
Scotland to get as many students/staff cycling to achieve the Cycle Friendly
status.
We are going to be hosting lots of exciting events to encourage cycling over the
academic year, so look out for guided rides, bike breakfasts (free for cyclists!) and
much more. Want to get involved, please contact your new cycling officer at
[email protected] or find him at the weekly pop-up cycle hubs which
will be run once a week at various locations around the campus.
The hub will be a great place for resources, advice and talking all things cycling!
