SECOND COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND Bishop Scharfenberger has approved parishes in the Diocese of Buffalo

to assist the Archdiocese of Beirut as they deal with the aftermath of the

devasting explosion. Fr. Elie Kairouz, a Maronite Catholic shares the

following to use in informing us about this collection:

John Steinbeck, the Noble Prize Winner, wrote “if you’re in trouble, or

hurt or need-go to the poor people. They’re the only ones that’ll help-the

only ones.” We all have seen the disaster that struck Lebanon on

August 4th as a result of the cataclysmic explosion in Beirut’s sea port.

Hundreds of citizens have lost their lives; thousands are injured; hun-

dreds of thousands of people are homeless; churches, hospitals, homes,

stores… have been totally or partially destroyed. This is a country al-

ready struggling with pandemic and crushed by economic collapse. As

Catholics we cannot ignore the situation. Parishes and parishioners are struggling in so many ways. But we all

must not forget about the larger church and world and be willing help.

Please make a sacrificial donation. Clearly indicate that the

contribution is intended for Lebanon. The money will be sent right

away to the Maronite Catholic Archdiocese of Beirut to ease the

suffering of its faithful. **********************************************************

Please be concerned about others.

*Never Forget Sanitizer and Mask when

you come to Church*

Today’s Readings:

Isaiah 22: 19-23 Romans 11: 33-36 Matthew 16: 13-20

Jesus poses a question to his disciples today: “Who do you say that I am?” Throughout our lives we have learned about Jesus from parents and teachers, from the word of God we hear proclaimed each week, from those in whom we see the face of Christ in our world. Peter’s

answer is that Jesus is the Christ (literally, the Messiah), the Son of the living God. Let us contemplate our own answer as we listen to today’s

readings.

Next week’s readings: Jeremiah 20: 7-9 Romans 12: 1-2

Matthew 16: 21-27

FAITH FORMATION NEWS

As summer begins to fade, we look towards all the new possibilities in

store for us this year. We hope this year will be a time of grace and

growing in faith, knowledge, and wisdom. As we embark on this new

year in our faith journey, we have scheduled our 2020-2021 Faith

Formation Kickoff meeting for September, 20th immediately following

the 10:30 am Mass. It is vitally important that someone from each family

(or someone to represent your family) is present, as we have so much to

go over!

Catholic Moral Teachings :

What we choose determines who we become. Choosing what is good changes the chooser, empowering him or her to proceed along the pathways of virtue and develop the habitus - or habits- which promote Christian character. The Catechism of the Catholic Church addresses human choice, action and freedom:

The more one does what is good, the freer one becomes. There is no true freedom except in the service of what is good and just. The choice to disobey and do evil is an abuse of freedom and leads to "the slavery of sin". (Rom 6:17)

(CCC#1733)

Saint John Paul's beautiful Letter on the Moral Life, the Splendor of Truth, responded to the continuing call of the Second Vatican Council to re-root Catholic moral teaching within the Bible,

which is the "soul of theology". (Dei Verbum ‘word of God’ #24)

The basis of all Catholic Christian morality is our belief in the God who created all things and in Jesus who taught us even better how to live. We believe we are created in God’s image and that we, and all creation, are basically good. Yet we recognize our own tendencies toward evil, especially in an excess of our

desires. The Ten Commandments are part of the code known to the early Israelites that helped them to live better lives in relationship with Yahweh. We believe in the same values, with certain changes because of our knowledge of Jesus Christ.

We believe Jesus, as God become human “God among us,” has most truly shown us how to live. Our moral life is based on trying

to live and treat others as Jesus did. The Bible is the pri-

mary source for information on the life of Jesus. In it, we find that the Reign of God (or Kingdom of God) is the central focus of Jesus’ teaching.

At the core of the teaching are the two commandments: “Love

the Lord, your God, with your whole heart, your whole soul, your

whole mind, and with all your strength” and “Love your

neighbor as yourself.” This implies that a certain selflessness is

an intrinsic part of the Reign of God, where we treat others as

though they were Christ, since we see Christ in them.
