ALTAR ROSARY SOCIETY WE WELCOME NEW MEMBERS!

We would greatly encourage all the wom-en in our parish to join the Altar Rosary Society in promoting the devotion of the Blessed Mother and sharing the Good News of her Son! We meet on every first Sunday at 8:00 A.M. to recite the Rosary prior to the 8:30 A.M. Mass. Just a reminder: Our next scheduled meet-ing is on Wednesday, September 19th in the Par-ish Hall at 1:00 P.M. THE LEGION OF MARY The Legion of Mary is a group of men and women who come together to serve God under the banner of the Blessed Virgin Mary by practicing the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. The Life of Jesus

Many of Jesus' disciples who were listening said, "This saying is hard; who can accept it?" Since Jesus knew that his disciples were mur-muring about this, he said to them, "Does this shock you? What if you were to see the Son of Man ascend-ing to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and life. But there are some of you who do not believe." Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him. And he said, "For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father." As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him. Jesus then said to the Twelve, "Do you also want to leave?" Simon Peter answered him, "Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God."

PRAYER TO BRING JESUS CHRIST

INTO OUR DAY

Lord Jesus, present before me in the Sacrament of the Altar, help me to cast out from my mind all thoughts of which You do not approve and from

my heart all emotions which You do not encourage. Enable me to spend my entire day as a co-worker with You, carrying out the tasks that

You have entrusted to me.

Be with me at every moment of this day: during the long hours of work, that I may never tire or

slacken from Your service; during my conversations, that they may not become for me occasions for meanness toward others; during the moments of worry and stress, that I may remain patient and spiritually calm; during periods of

fatigue and illness, that I may avoid self pity and think of others; during times of temptation, and

that I may take refuge in Your grace.

Help me to remain generous and loyal to You this day and so be able to offer it all up to You with its successes which I have achieved by Your help and its failures which have occurred through my own

fault. Let me come to the wonderful realization that life is most real when it is lived

with You as the Guest of my soul. Amen.

Widow St. Monica came into the world in the year 333. As soon as she was old enough she was married to Patricius, a pagan citizen of Tagaste. Although Patricius was a man of high temper, she bore all trials with great patience. Her example and gentle conduct exercised such an influence over him that he was fi-nally converted to Christianity. He died the year af-ter his Baptism. The great cross of her life was the conduct of her son, Augustine, who was 17 years of age when his father died in 371. His mother prayed long and fer-vently for his conversion. When he left her in Africa to go to Italy, she followed him and found him at Mi-lan, where the words of St. Ambrose had already con-vinced him of the falsehood of Manichean doctrines, which he abandoned without being entirely convert-ed. In August, 386, St. Monica had the long covet-ed happiness of seeing her son return to God. He was baptized by St. Ambrose on Easter eve the fol-lowing year and soon after, with his mother and some friends, he sent out for Africa. St. Monica’s work was now down; her son was converted; the sinner had be-come a saint. She fell sick on the road and died at Ostia, where they were to embark, in 387. PRAYER God, Comforter of the afflicted, You accepted St. Monica’s tears to bring about the conversion of her son St. Augus-tine. Through their intercession, grant that we may have contrition for our sins and experience the grace of Your pardon. Amen.

ST. AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO

Bishop & Doctor of the Church St. Augustine was born on November 13, 354, at Tagaste in Africa. In spite of the piety of his holy mother, St. Monica, he fell at an early age into the greatest disorders, and even at a later period became a heretic of the sect of the Manicheans. Unfortunate-ly, his father, Patricius, was then an idolater, so that the youth met with little or no restraint on his side. In the beginning of 370 he continued his studies at Carthage and the following year his father died, after being converted to Christianity. Some time later, St. Augustine took up resi-dence at Carthage and opened a school of rhetoric. Here God’s grace and the prayers of his mother, who had followed him to Italy, as well as the instructions of saintly friends, particularly of St. Ambrose, effect-ed his conversion. He abandoned the sect of the Manicheans, and after some time gave himself en-tirely to God and was baptized by St. Ambrose on Easter Eve, 387. On his return to Africa, the saint lost his mother at Ostia in the same year, and in 388 he ar-rived at Carthage. At Tagaste he began to live a com-munity life with some of his friends. He was or-dained in 390 and moved to Hippo where he estab-lished another community with several of his friends who had followed him. Five years later he was con-secrated Bishop and made coadjutor to Valerius, Bishop of Hippo, whom he succeeded the following year. From this period until his death his life was one of ceaseless activity. He governed his church, preached to his people, and wrote voluminous works that touched many lives. His humility prompted him to write his Confessions about the year 397, which is a detailed account of his early years. He exerted his zeal against the various errors of his day, and was a true defender of the Faith. This multi-faceted religious genius and devout servant of God died on August 28, 430. PRAYER Lord, renew in Your Church, the spirit which You inspired in St. Augustine, Your Bishop. Filled by this spirit, may we thirst after You as the true Source of wisdom. Amen.

the Spirit of God speaking to his heart. Confident of God’s grace, he had the courage to speak words of condemnation, repentance, and salvation. REFLECTION Each of us has a calling to which we must listen. No one will ever repeat the mission of St. John the Baptist, and yet all of us are called to that very mis-sion. It is the role of the Christian to witness to Je-sus. Whatever our position in this world, we are called to be disciples of Christ. By our words and deeds, others should realize that we live in the joy of knowing that Jesus is Lord. We do not have to depend upon our own limited resources, but can draw strength from the vastness of Christ’s saving grace. ___________________________________

REFLECTING AND SHARING THE SUNDAY’S SCRIPTURES

Since many parishioners have requested a Bible Study, and also a Faith Sharing Group, we are pleased to announce that these two compo-nents of our faith will be brought together for all to experience. As we learn more about each of the Sunday Readings, time to reflect and share our experiences can help to understand how God continues to bring us closer to Him and each oth-er. Our first Bible & Faith Sharing Group will meet on Thursday, August 23rd, 2018 from 1:00 P.M. to 2:30 P.M. in the church. Nothing is needed except for an open heart. Handouts per-taining to the week’s Scriptures as well as other material will be available. From time to time, a video on a given as-pect of our faith will be presented apart from our weekly gathering. These presentations will af-ford us with even a greater depth of knowledge. THE MARTYRDOM OF

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST The drunken oath of a king with a shallow sense of honor, a seductive dance and the hateful heart of a queen combined to bring about the martyr-dom of St. John the Baptist. The greatest of proph-ets suffered the fate of so many Old Testament prophets before him: rejection and martyrdom. The “voice crying in the desert” did not hesitate to accuse the guilty, did not hesitate to speak the truth. But why? What possesses a man that he would give up his very life? This great religious reformer was sent by God to prepare the people for the Messiah. His vo-cation was one of selfless giving. The only power that he claimed was the Spirit of Yahweh. “I am baptizing you with water, for repentance, but the one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire” (Matthew 3:11). Scripture tells us that many people fol-lowed St. John looking to him for hope, perhaps in anticipation of some great messianic power. St. John never allowed himself the false honor of re-ceiving these people for his own glory. He knew his calling was one of preparation. When the time came, he led his disciples to Jesus: “The next day John was there again with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he said, ‘Behold, the Lamb of God.’ The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus” (John 1:35-37). It is St. John the Baptist who has pointed the way to Christ. St. John’s life and death were a giving over of self for God and other people. His simple style of life was one of complete detach-ment ment from earthly possessions. His heart was centered on God and the call that he heard from
